THE LION Published by the Students of Peabody High OF CONTENTS Faculty Administration P. 18 Clubs Organizations P. 42 Underclassmen P. 68 Sports P. 98 Features P. 114 Seniors P. 128 Advertisements P. 166 FOREWORD OUR DREAMS BECOME REALITIES . . . In every institution, large or small, whether home, church, or school; the members strive for es- sential goals . Among these goals are shown the spiritual, moral, and physical in- fluences. Every dream is given vi- sion and energy only if the dreamer dwells on the obstacles of reality . Here at Peabody, our home, we have many dreams, aspirations, and interests. Every Peabodian contrib- utes to the stacks and stacks of head- aches that come along with the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Look around you, and you will see some of our hopes blossoming and many of our ’’dreams becoming re- alities . 3 THE GLORY OF BEING 4 A LION School life at Peabody for the student body en- tails living together in a harmonious manner, giv- ing respect to each other in order to gain respect, striving forth together to develop the school to its highest peak, and perform- ing far beyond the call of duty. Likewise, in keeping with the spirit of a true Lion, we have to adjust to certain conditions . Sometimes we have a need to be wild and ferocious, in a mild manner, of course, and at other times, the situation calls for our gentleness and understand- ing. r -if 0 w, L$ _ — A i 7 THE WISHING WELL OF HOPE AND PROGRESS Throughout this year, we have observed many changes in our school as well as our com- unity. The dreams of former Peabodians are beginning to materialize. We take great pride in the new facilities and buildings being constructed in our city, Pe- tersburg, one of the historical sites in the South. The political, economical, and social con- ditions of our fair city have definitely been improved . Much appreciation goes to our parents who have diligently worked for the long -waited -for accomplishments. We do not hesitate to add that their many hours of work and encourage- ment have aided us in many capacities . The progressive movement has begun and our feet are off the ground. PEABODIANS IN A We, the students of Pea- body High, recognize the im- portance of school spirit and school pride . The student body diligently strives to carry on its tedious task of pushing the Lions on to victory. In work- ing together with ultimate goals we not only bring honor and victory to our team, but pride and acknowledgement to our school. Even in their darkest hour, the mighty Lions have trudged on until they have found light in the dismal jungle of com- petition. Win or lose the Lions ' heads are always high, their smiles sincere, and their actions justified. A true Lion is one who is loyal and one who is always ready to defend the Lion ' s honor in sports competition or academic excellence . A true Lion, above all else, possesses the rare quality of persever- ance . No true Lion gives up easily, for the reward that lies ahead; his determi- nation and toil bring him nearer to it . SOLEMN MOOD DEDICATION To one who is never a stranger among men, To one whose calling card is forever a smile To one whose life is varied and full To one whose hand is always a helping hand To one whose songs are the sweet songs of a lark, We, the Class of 1969, dedicate this yearbook To Reverend Vernon Lee. A native of Petersburg and a graduate of Peabody, Mr. Vernon Lee is no stranger in the environs of the Peabody family. In spite of the many demands made on his life which involve him as a minister and a father, Reverend Lee still has the time to aid Peabody in its many activities. i The Reverend Vernon Lee, taking his role seriously. The Orator--Vemon gives a thought-pro- voking message to his audience. The Sportsman- -Mr. Vernon Lee, Peabody ' s Sportscaster, reviews the Lion ' s foot- ball schedule with Mr. Rainey. The Thinker — Here Vernon Lee, away from the hustle and bustle of life, relaxes with a book. The Patron and the Performer--Mr. Lee, softly crooning, Here she comes, Miss Peabody , informs Paulette Walker of her achievement. 13 REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ( 1929 - 1968 ) Out of a time of violence and tur- moil in which this great nation of ours had plunged--a situation of riots, rac- ism, and dissension came a great paci- fist, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. His philosophy of non-violence, adopted from Ghandi, influenced many people at home and abroad and brought attention to the social and economical discrimination and prejudices in the United States. This same philosophy expressed the true meaning of peace, love, and brotherhood. Ironically as it may seem, this great man of peace was violently struck down by the fatal bullet of an assassin ' s gun. On this day and crucial moments after- wards, the people who sowed and har- vested these evils took a good look at themselves, only to see the sick and corrupted souls of Americans and the insecure society they, themselves, had built. 14 ROBERT FRANCIS KENNEDY (19 - 1968 ) Robert Francis Kennedy was an incredible figure with compassion, self-dignity, perseverance, and determination. This same domineering figure that recognized the many fallacies stood out beyond the masses of our system, stood out beyond the masses who ignored the policies that would alter the des- tination of our system. Robert Kennedy had a keen imagination which wedged his views of reality and his dream together. He understood the problems of our society, and un- like others before; he understood but did not accept the alternatives. Led by truth and honor, Robert Kennedy fought for the rights of all men. Although his tactics brought much opposition and criticism, nevertheless he waged a personal war against oppression, poverty, bitterness and the injustices of white supremacy. In contrast to the noble deeds that fought against this society, he was assassinated by a member of that sick society . A great man has died and many questions are left unanswered while his followers pave an extraordinary avenue- -a new horizon of truth. So long as the avenue is being paved, his words to live by still remain in the hearts and minds of many: Some men look at the world the way it is and say why, I look at the world the way it never was and say why not. 15 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION THE PROFESSIONAL It is not difficult to spot the pro . The pro, the encourager of our dreams, has a definite composure . His attitudes reveal knowledge, ability, confidence, and some- times humor. His definite composure and distinct character tell you that he is used to solving problems such as, healing broken hearts and ironing out love-sick crushes. The moods of each of our pros are in harmony, distinction, and character . We admire his taste, because he admires and perfects our dreams . What does he do? A lot of things . He has quite a few candid tricks to stop us from staring out of the window and he often attempts to read our brain waves . Of course, there is more. But it all adds up to this! No PRO is like OUR pro! 4 “YOUNG DREAMERS” Every great man in the history of this planet who has seen his visions transform into realities was, at one time or another, a dreamer. Here at Peabody the visions of young dreamers are being molded and channeled by our concerned teachers and dedi- cated Administration. Their contributions to our genera- tion at this critical stage of our lives warrant praise in the highest degree. The abil- ity to dream is a natural hu- man trait; however, without adequate guidance our dreams may well develop into ideas destructive to man ' s purpose on earth. The Lions of P.H.S. are proud to claim as our very own, Mr. E. E. Rainey, a man who has been instrumen- tal in this guidance, a man who sees our generation as being the only hope America has of building our nation in- to the society she was meant to be. It is with this philoso- phy that he sacrifices, often beyond the call of duty, that our dreams may be nourished with an education of unques- tionable quality. Our Assistant Principals Mr. Williams and Mrs. Hayes symbolize Co-operation at Peabody. Mrs. Thorne Mrs. Wilson Mrs. Jones = Efficiency OUR GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT With concerned eyes cast toward the individual futures of nearly 1400 stu- dents, our counsel- ors are constantly helping us that we may reap as many benefits as possi- ble from our pres- ent lives . Although we have playful moments, we take great pride in the heritage of our clubs. We also take pride in the strong feeling of belonging. All of the clubs tend to stimulate us academically, as well as to give us a sense of responsibility and obligation. To us, the definition of a well-rounded individual is one who devotes himself to pursue his varied interests, and systematically DI- VERSES his talents. Yes, the clubs and or- ganizations do enrich our high school lives . LION Kermit Dance: Production Manager 42 Mrs. I. Brandon shows delight in discussing 69 yearbook. Our President strives to promote dignity and to maintain a harmon- ious atmosphere throughout our school term . The main purpose of the council is to serve as the backbone of school activities and to cater to the students ' concerns, and interests. To do this the council continues to take on certain traditional activities annually such as Follies, Christmas baskets, Teacher Appreci- ation Day, Student-Teacher Day, etc. (A quote from the President) To every step taken in achieving our decree, we must take two steps in fostering a responsible character. Mrs . Elva Hollins and Mrs . Rose Barnes are sponsors . 46 Kermit Dance, President of the Student Cooperative Association, is a conscien- tious and loyal Peabodian. His unselfish interest in the student body has earned him the title of a true and noble servant for the ad- vancement of school patriotism. Carolyn and Kermit, Vice-President and President of the S.C.A. display a Lion pennant. The sale of these pennants aid the organization in promoting school enthusiasm. Members of the Library Staff work each period during study and before or after school. These ambitious students volunteer their time and labor to keep our library operating smoothly. In spite of the small number of students participating in the Literary Guild there is much accomplished. The members share many rewarding reading experiences. sn The Journalism Club, composed of the Yearbook Staff, the Publication Club and other interested members, combines in- terest and skill to produce creative writing and reporting. The Student Publications Club produces a semi-annual newspaper entitled The Peabody Script. They have top-notch writers with vivid imaginations, along with praiseworthy proofreaders. Four Honor Society members quietly and meditatively observe their shield. They are (from left to right) Charla Sizemore, Arkell Thweatt, Paulette Walker and Bruce Cartwright. Newly chosen candidates, whose coun- tenances depict a variety of expressions and moods, wait for the long sought - for oath that will make them a full- fledged member of the Peabody National Honor Society. The Clyde S. Scott Chapter of the National Honor Society encourages development and maintenance of scholastic ability. The Senior Class members pictured here represent some of the most prominent intellectual images at Peabody. Their character and leadership ability qualify them to be worthy of this image. The New Homemakers of America club opens its doors to all individuals interested in domestic affairs. The Future Business Leaders of America prepare to be tomorrow ' s leaders in the fast moving world of business. Mr. Mallory, art instructor, and the Art Club members are evaluating and discussing anatomical drawings done by Mr. Mallory. The Photography Club headed by Mr. W. Shepperson takes and develops pictures for the Yearbook Staff and the Peabody Script. The students are trained in every field of photography. The Industrial Arts Club seeks to help learners know their environment and to make the most of it. The Foreign Language Club, striving to rid its members of geographical prejudices due to lack of knowledge, explores and discusses the various customs, costumes, geographical location and language of many countries. ' x ' ' vs A , These sturdy, young Peabodians have gained membership in the Varsity Club as a result of participating in one or more of Peabody ' s sports. Matthew Brown, Larry Lanier, and Lonneil Edmonds, members of the Varsity Club, dis- play two of the many trophies they have re- ceived. Under the direction of Mr. William McKinley, the Peabody band entertained many spectators during half-times at home and at away games. The band marched in the Veterans Day Parade and in the Christmas parade. 56 I Peabodians are proud of their very beautiful high -stepping majorettes and lovely twirlers. The girls participating with the squad are very versatile and skillful. In a world of her own, high above the cheering crowd, Yolonda Hamp- ton, head Majorette, does her own thing. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Richard Pegram, V.I.C.A. fosters high standards in trade ethics, workmanship, leadership, and esteem for trade and industrial education. The heavenly scent of a midnight sum- mer ' s dream fills our nostrils as we smell the aroma of a dream in the making. All examples of good leadership, academic standings, vocational interests, and good Peabody spirit are displayed by us . All that the upperclassmen were not, we diligently strive to be. The clouds of suc- cess linger in the sky of a blue hue, while the tears of their failures build steps for us to climb. Their dreams are added to ours, their prayers are repeated on our lips, and their wishes for us to remain true Peabodians are our every command. Peabody without sports is pretty much like a church without a congregation, a beggar without a cup, a circus without a clown, a piano without keys, or a boy without his mom. Drastic, isn ' t it? Sports are the main interests of the stu- dents on the extracurricular activities ' agenda . Sports provide entertainment for our student body and faculty. They also help to promote school spirit and develop a sense of fair play and good sportsman- ship . For Peabodians, our lifeblood is the competition and the school spirit. Isn ' t that what an institution is all about? FOOTBALL— 1968-69 Charles White on the scene, begins another year in sports at P.H.S. Captains Harold Price and Larry Smith discuss game. Ronnie Peterson and Matthew Brown are two very good sharpshooters and ballhandlers . The Lions also have two relief stars, Herbert Lewis and Ken- neth Horton . Working diligently each year is Coach Peal, who has never had a losing year at Peabody . Kenneth Horton Ronnie Peterson Brown shoots two to break the ice. THE STORY OF OUR MOMENTS OF ENCHANTMENTS It is not hard to imagine that in a school with a variety of student ideals and moods that there would be plenty of activities and diverse talents displayed. The Peabody family is characterized for its exhibition of talents and noted accomplishments . These areas are the criteria of our features . The features, indeed tell a story of the highlights of every season, and the sunshine that follows every rainy day. The adventures, the catastrophes, the honors, and the escapades of our life on campus are now revealed. There seems to he no end to her energy. Yv THANKSGIVING AT PEABODY Thanksgiving is a day in which all of us are proud. At Peabody we show our thankfulness. Prepar- ing baskets for the needy is a tradition among us Peabodians. We also express the meaning of Thanksgiving by giving a play. This year ' s play was entitled Willie Carves the Turkey . 122 SENIORS PRESENT CLASS PLAY The Senior Class, under the direction of Miss Ann Phillips, presents its annual Senior play. The drama was entitled The Groom Said No! Charla Sizemore, David Ware, Kenneth Lee, Yeta Dawson and Gertrude Harris. I Charla Sizemore, Paulette Walker, Kenneth Lee and the Nurse. THE RE- SULT OF THE PRODIGY OFTHE HUMAN MIND.” The seniors, the cream of the crop pos- sess the most distinguished portrait in our art gallery. There have been trying times for them, of course, but they trudged on, determined and consciously aware of the feat they have nearly conquered. The senior year burns holes in their pockets with senior portraits, college applications, aptitude tests, class dues, and many more ex- pensive trivialities. The going is seemingly rough and many boast after they have been pro- moted for the first semester, declaring that it was such a breeze , man. Many hearts shudder and leap out of bosoms from the tensions of exams, (they know that they must pass.) Many are also cognizant of their beginning adjustment to an adult world. The seniors are now more conscientious about their attitudes and character. There is still fun, but it is more sophisticated and adult -like . Their teachers ' smiles beam upon them as they see them merrily growing up, remember- ing the thumb tacks -in -the -chair episodes and the strenuous horseplay. With heavy hearts, the seniors prepare to depart into an insecure world- -away from their teacher ' s guidance and mommy’s encouraging words . The seniors have many persons to be grate- ful to, and many obligations to fulfill. They leave behind tokens of love and many thumb tacks ! This was our initial and continuing quest . And now we must pass through these doors, suffi- ciently prepared to face the greater quest and more daring challenges of a world never before known to us . We must constantly search for peace in a world often inflicted with turmoil we must love though there be tempta- tions to hate, we must believe though that in which we believe may never be seen . And We know if we would only be true to these glorious quests, That our hearts will be peaceful and calm when we ' re laid to our rest. And the World will be better for this That one man scorned and covered with scars . May strive with his very last ounce of courage, To reach that unreachable star. 149 EVER TO THEE 150 DEAR PEABODY HIGH 151 WILL OUR FOND TRAVEL s ORMA f 152 MEMORIES CLING 153 SENIOR DIRECTORY Allen, Diane 729 Harding Street Art, I.C.T. Many of us have dreams of entering the ever growing and complicated world of busi- ness. It is always good to know that there are those of us who are interested in an in- vestment in our dreams. The mere fact that our local merchants and patrons have aided us financially is evidence enough that these people realize the problems of one of our dreams — the year- book . These persons have willingly assisted us in producing this yearbook. We, the 1969 Lion Staff would like very much to thank the patrons and the members of the Retail Merchants Association for be- lieving in us and helping us to secure our dream . Although now you are graduates, you can do a great service for the rest of us, if you never cease to be students — looking for opportunities and ways to cherish the American system of free enterprise and to improve the American way of life. You can be thankfu l for these schools in a country where you are free to worship and work and think and talk as you please. This is your heritage from the people who built America . THE FUTURE is pretty largely in your hands — you must be vigilant and active to combat the evils of socialism, government domination of private industry, and all the ism than destroy democracy.
