In a profile, one can readily see the determined set of the shoulders, the strong forceful lines of the face . All these factors reveal the characteristics of an individual. The outline of a building, although it seems meaningless to many, becomes a fond memory when viewed with a feeling of affec- tion and nostalgia. 5 Whether at work or play the students at Peabody work together to create a truly friendly atmosphere. Even though group work is highly rewarding, individualism is never forgotten. Students are urged to strive for the highest goals . Our teachers guide us along these paths by trying to develop our every possible potential . Togetherness — 6 in all our endeavors Peabody is an air of formality and informality There is a time and a place for every- thing. At Peabody there is a time to laugh and play and there is a time for serious concentration . Through our faculty we learn to put each thing in its proper place. We share many hours of fun, yet we never for- get that our main purpose in being here is to learn . wiiih unman HttaiLjm A Jo I — « i o 1 f, ■ : - M I % v ft . Our library, science, and language labs provide the necessary equipment and materials suitable for students ' use. Our skilled instructors do much to encourage the use of each of these facilities . On special days when students receive honors and awards we all realize that Peabody is indeed, a very informative school. 11 Dedication With genuine affection and appreciation for his long and devoted service to Peabody High, the 1967 LION is dedicated to Mr. Hermanze E. Fauntleroy. During his stay at Peabody he has given us his understanding, guidance, and friendship. We feel that Mr. Fauntleroy ' s contributions have been outstanding not only in our school, but in other areas as well . Mr. Fauntleroy is a newly-elected member of the Petersburg City Council and captain of the United States Army Reserve . Mr. Fauntleroy has made our days at Peabody High School enjoyable and pleasant. We owe much to him, and we certainly appreciate his love and devotion. 12 Mr. Rainey con- gratulates Mr. Fauntleroy on his recent vie - tory in the city council elec- tion. • ' lABODY H$ GROUP WtO «« ( V — - L 1 — — - fr iz Art students show statue to Mr. Fauntleroy. Friendshi 2nd dedication are characteristics Peabody ' s Administration and Faculty Late in the afternoon a light still burns in the teachers ' workroom; inside, a weary but dedi- cated teacher is thinking of ways in which to make his classes more interesting to his students. An interested counselor is pondering the courses planned for a bewildered underclassman. The principalis in his office writing a college recommendation for a senior. These are all typical situations in the life of a teacher or administrator at Peabody, for each member of the Peabody staff unselfishly gives of himself to the student body. The teacher ' s first responsibility is to himself. He has committed himself to the education of today ' syouth, tomorrow’s leaders . At Peabody, eachteacher seems fully aware of his duties and strives to fulfill them. Each teacher tries to acquaint his students with the most important aspects of his courses, thus preparing the students for the world which they will someday lead. He acutely realizes the importance of developing an open mind and a rational manner of think- ing. Another function of the Peabody teacher is that of a friend, in addition to an educator. He is concerned about his students ' progress and problems. Each of his students is important as an individual. The teacher is not merely someone who stands before the class reciting uninteresting facts; he is also a close friend and confidant. He is never too busy or too tired to listen to his students ' problems. Despite this close relationship between teacher and student, the teacher at Peabody does not lose his student ' s respect. All Peabodians look up to the teachers, principals, and counselors with deep respect and admiration. This respect is well-deserved, for these dedicated men and women have been charged with the education of tomorrow ' s citizens . It is not all work; neither is it all play. It has its seri- ous sides and its moments of frivolity. There are also times of pageantry and splendor. Then, too, there are accomplishments of which Peabody is very proud. The feature section provides a showcase for these trophies. One of the most exciting events at Peabody is the crowning of Miss Peabody. After a week of talent presentations, fashion shows, and voting, the new Miss Peabody was crowned on the day of our Homecoming Game . The contestants for Miss Peabody and her court endured a week of exhausting rehearsals and the anxiety -filled period of waiting, just waiting, until the big day finally arrived . All the rehearsals proved helpful, for the girls were visions of feminine grace in their lovely gowns . Win or lose, each contestant will have fond memories of her participation in the Miss Peabody Pageant. The Christmas doors injected a bit of the Christmas spirit into the faculty and student body. As the homeroom students worked on their doors, the school itself seemed to radiate with peace on earth” ' and goodwill to men . The Christmas baskets provided away for Peabodians to share Christmas with other members of the community . The Christmas, program reminded Peabodians of the true meaning of Christmas . All in all, the Yuletide activities at Peabody helped make Christmas an important part of life at P.H.S. Peabody is very proud to boast to two finalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Pro- gram for Outstanding Negro Students. Needless to say, to have two such students among the Peabody family is a great honor, for few schools can present equal accomplishments. At Pea- body, however, such an honor is nothing new . In 1965, one Peabodian was a National Achievement Scholar; in 1966, there were five National Achievement finalists and one National Achievement Scholar. It is the hope of all Peabodians that our students will continue to meet with academic success . There are as many possible feature stories as there are students at Peabody. The feature section can cover only some of them . Meet Mary Mayfield ' s rendition of Moon River may helpher win the crown. Jeannie Manson does a modern dance as her talent competition. Theten finalists are: Constance Wynn, Mary Mayfield, Dianne Dyson, Francyne Anderson, Jacqueline Davis’ Arlene Lesane, Yvonne Bethea, Jeannie Manson, and Loretta Young. Col The Jacqueline Harris was also among the ten finalists. Constance Wynn displays her talent as she plays the well-known progressive jazz composition, The Girl from Ipanema. Some students are musicians, some are writers, and some are actors. These talents must be developed in order to be use- ful. The clubs and organizations at Peabody provide outlets for these talents. Each student is able to find his place in the Peabody family . The band members and majorettes presented excellent half time shows during football sea- son. The cheerleaders, too, made contributions . These organizations combined their efforts to help stimulate school spirit at athletic contests . The Student Council, the most important organization at Peabody, planned many activities during the year . The Student Council members worked with the members of the Pep Club and Cheerleaders in planning the bonfire; they also collected firewood and stuffed the dummy for the burial of East End, our homecoming opponent. The Christmas projects included the distri- bution of Christmas baskets to the needy and a door decoration contest. The Student Council ' s annual talent show, The Follies of ’67 was destined to be a success. The Journalism Club, consists of members of the yearbook staff and other interested per- sons. The Journalism Club decorated a Christmas tree which was placed in the main corridor. The Publications Club produced the Peabody Script, the first appearance of which was high- lighted by an intramural basketball game . The National Honor Society recognizes juniors and seniors who have excelled in the areas of character, scholarship, leadership, and service . The organization also inspires underclass- men to strive to do well in their studies so that they might someday become a member of these privileged few . The Clubs and Organizations at Peabody tend to round out our student body, thus preparing us for the future. These clubs will always have a prominent place in our remembrance of P.H.S. The students of this organization endeavor to broaden their scope of literary knowledge. To become a good teacher you must develop many fine qualities. It is with this thought in mind that the FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA was founded. The young people of this organization propose to cultivate in themselves the quali- ties that are necessary for successful teaching. a vital part of our school UiJW The library plays a vital part in the functions of the school. Its work could not have been as effective without the assistance of student workers, the LIBRARY ASSISTANTS. The club members shelve and clean books, keep magazines in order and work at the circulation desk. All interested students in the collegiate course who maintain an above 80 average in mathematics for three years com- pose the membership of the POLYGON CLUB. They gain mathematical knowledge and enthusiasm from their association with this club. The editor, Patsy Gee, and her staff combine their efforts in publishing the PEABODY SCRIPT. The beautiful voices of the CHOIR are heard In all major programs during the year. They entertain for the senior commencement. 65 The precision of our band depends upon the attention given to the band leader and drum majorette, Constance Wynn. Mr. McKinley directs the ba nd on the Peabody Lions football field, with the majorettes keeping instep with the music. The proficient Peabody band and majorettes were i great asset in the past year. They performed at each foo ball game during the season. Their hard work, learnii new selections, routines and twirls for half-time show was worthwhile as exemplified by their superb entertaii ment. In addition to the football games, the band ai majorettes participated in several parades. 66 67 The band practiced their selections to perfection. The fruit of their labor was excellence which brought plea- sure and enjoyment to their audience. iWW Working with others helps to In the past year, the SAFETYPATROL SQUAD has been one of the most useful groups at Peabody. It is their responsibility to take up all unattended trays and direct the lines in the cafeteria. Each year they participate in the Safety Patrol Parade held in Washington, D.C. The JUNIOR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION is one of the most active and useful groups at Peabody. They work at each game selling tickets, popcorn and doing whatever is needed. 68 develop a feeling of self-confidence The PHOTO CLUB members furnish shots of assembly programs, athletic events, and Peabodians in action. Its members give needed assistance to the yearbook staff by taking many of the pictures. Things are really developing for Ronald. 69 Ada and Priscilla take a pause from picture taking to do a little picture making. Student Council is core of all school activities The most important organization of the school is the STUDENT COUNCIL. While many people were enjoying the summer va- cation, the officers and sponsors of the Stu- dent Council had begun to organize and plan for the school year. Peabody students enjoy the Follies, a variety show held each year, which is an S.C.A. project. The S.C.A. sponsors Christmas and Valentine Dances for the student body. At the end of the year the S.C.A. awards medals to the five leading honor roll stu- dents . William Batts, President-elect, obtains background ma- terial for a speech. THE BIG BROTHERS AND SISTERS CLUB is a newly or- ganized derivative of the Student Council. New students and teachers are assisted by the members of this club. Freshman students are welcomed by a gala partywhich the club organize. STUDENT COUNCIL They bade the February graduates good-bye by organiz- ing a party in their honor. The Big Brothers and Sisters is a very important club because it endeavors to make everyone feel like a member of the Peabody family. STUDENT COUNCIL The STUDENT COUNCIL meets regularly to discuss the business of the school. William Batts, President, Charles Bates, Vice-President, and Michael Thompson, Secre- tary are performing their designated duties in a meeting. In the same meeting the S.C.A. representatives gave them their undivided attention. Belinda Robinson, Editor-in-Chief, discusses yearbook plans with Mrs. Ida Brandon, Advisor. Yearbook staff produce ? There are many facets of publishing a yearbook. Each person on the staff must work individually to produce a successful book. Yearbooks cost a great deal of money, and all of its cost cannot be met by the individual yearbook sales . Therefore, it is necessary to secure advertisements which is a respon- sibility of the senior class. Pictures are of vital importance to the Lion. Members of the staff arrange picture schedules for individuals, clubs, and special activities. Their object is to obtain com- plete, accurate coverage of school events . Hand in hand with pictures must come copy. This must be correct in detail, inter- esting in form, and appropriate in style. Good copy is necessary for the students to get a complete picture of this year. The Lion Staff is a working staff and this book is evidence of its work. In such a situation, sportsmanship becomes noth- ing more than a word. The athlete himself loses his identity, becoming an invisible boy. He becomes only a uniform which makes baskets, intercepts passes, and returns serves. The football team cleared a 5-4 record, and although they lost a few games, we still refer to them as our team. All the games, even our defeats, were hard fought contests. We are proud of our team, for their determination proved that they are truly mighty lions. Our basketball team begins a very important season, for they were last year’s Central Dis- trict Tournament champions. We would like to have a championship team this year, although our trophy cases are already over crowded with symbols of Peabody ' s athletic superiority. Our team got off to an encouraging start by defeating Carter G. Woodson, last year’s visitation champions. All Peabodians are certain that our bas ketball team represented us well. One team of which we are especially proud is our golf team. In the first years of its exis- tence, our golf team won three state championships. We are confident that our golf team will continue to have successful seasons . Unlike most athletes, the Peabody athlete learns to play for the sheer joy of playing. Vic- tory and defeat are borne with equal serenity . Our athletes learn that being a good sport is more important than being a winner . The Lions showed desire and determination in their game against Maggie Walker. What it takes to win— coaching, Wayne, you missed your block! SECOND ROW: Victor Grandison, Chavis Todd, Wayne Jones, Whitfield Raines, James Johnson, John Alexander. m’ Underclassmen are important, too! Inmost schools, underclassmen are generally thought of as a mass of little kids. Person- alities are lost and names forgotten amidst a fog of faces. At Peabody, however, the individual is important, too. Every student is a part of a group, but he is also an individual. Each class engages in its own projects. The eighth graders were given an orientation pro- gram by the newly -organized Big Brother -Big Sister Organization. At this time they met the Student Council officers and many of the Big Brothers and Sisters . The eighth graders were taken on a tour of the buildings, after which they went to the cafeteria for refreshments and to learn the Alma Mater . The ninth graders, like the eighth graders, receive the benefits of the Big Brothers and Sis- ters. This organization has planned a series of freshmen activities, tentatively culminating with a Freshmen Dance. The sophomores live and learn in a world of theorems, Julius Caesar and premier lecons . Theirs is a sort of in-between existence. They are too old to be treated as underclassmen, yet too young to be treated as upperclassmen. For one year, they hang suspended between ado- lescence and adulthood. The juniors are facing what is probably the busiest year of their high school careers . They busily engage in the ordering of class rings and choosing next year’s yearbook staff. The high- light of this year is the Junior Senior Prom . Although the classes seem totally involved with individual and class projects, they also play an important role in the life of a school. Peabody without underclassmen would be like Christ- mas without Santa Claus, winter without snow, or spring without flowers . Timidly, we take our places The Eight Graders are new in school and, as usual, they encounter many problems . However, they manage to handle them exceptionally well . Although they are new, they work along with everyone in helping themselves. They encounter harder subjects and they find that they have to depend on themselves a little more. They realize that these things are a part of becoming one of the Peabody family . They are expected to set examples of character and decorum which the underclassmen can follow with dignity. If such examples are set they would certainly be followed, for the under- classmen look up to the senior class as the epitome of all that is good at Peabody. The seniors did not always feel the importance of their position. Caught between Col- lege Boards, overnight term papers, and trig classes, they sometimes wondered what that mad rat-race would accomplish. Added to these anxieties were class fees, senior pictures, and yearbook deadlines . Whew! No wonder all the alumni smiled through their graduations . Although there will be trying times, the senior year is one of exhilaration . This year, the seniors were the guests of honor at the Junior -Senior Prom. More important were the activities of Senior Week, which consisted of several days during which the se- niors dressed in accordance with each day ' s theme. The highlight of this weekwas Se- nior Class Day, a day of white dresses, carnations, and farewell speeches. Needless to say, no day in 1967 was of greater importance to the seniors than gradu- ation day . On this day, old quarrels were forgotten in an atmosphere of happiness. Many tears were shed as the graduates left the sheltering walls of their alma mater to enter the world as adults . One ' s senior year is a busy and meaningful year. It is during this term that the se- niors begin to formulate concrete plans for their futures. Despite the trials and tensions it involves, the senior year --the pinnacle of one ' s high school career- -is probably the most cherished, most longed-for year in the life of a young adult. A great deal of the cost of the yearbook is defrayed by securing advertisements from local mer- chants and patrons . The fact that these people have willingly assisted in the financing of the yearbook shows the community-wide interest in school activities. The persons and businesses listed in this section realize the importance of sufficient funds in yearbook production . We, the members of the 1967 staff of THE LION, wish to acknowledge all persons who contributed to the publication of our yearbook. This section is our way of saying Thank you, for being interested in us. Although now you are graduates, you can do a great service for the rest of us, if you never cease to be students — looking for opportunities and ways to cherish the American system of free enterprise and to improve the American way of life. You can be thankful for these schools in a country where you are free to worship and work and think and talk as you please. This is your heritage from the people who built America.
