The Annual Staff Presents THE LION Volume XVI 1966 Petersburg, Virginia FOREWORD Reflection upon our years at Peabody High School causes us to unfold many vivid words of descrip- tion. These words express our joys and sorrows, our pleasures and pains . Within our book, THE LION, we have attempted to captivate some of those impressions, which have occurred predominantly during our senior year, through lyric and scenic expressions. We deem it necessary to pay special tribute to our faculty and staff members who have molded our minds in such a manner that we have adopted the following objective; Before us lies the timber; let us build. 2 CONTENTS Administration Faculty Features Underclassmen Organizations Sports Yearbook Staff Seniors Senior Directory Advertisements DEDICATION Mr. Clarence Galloway With genuine affection and appreciation for his long and de- voted service to Peabody High School, the 1966 yearbook is dedi- cated to Mr. Clarence Galloway. He started his association with Peabody over forty years ago. Until his retirement in 1965, Mr. Galloway was on hand for many of the major events that took place in the development of this school. It is difficult to think of Peabody without thinking of him . He will long be remembered as he moved about the campus with a cheerful hello for everyone he met . 4 OUR PRINCIPAL The world which you will enter is filled with opportunities for service and personal fulfillment never before known to our civilization. TO OUR BELOVED PRINCIPAL, Mr. Elmore E, Rainey, we leave our sincere thanks for a wonderful five years at Peabody High with the hope that, now that we are leaving, he will have more peaceful days and restful nights . TO THE ENTIRE FACULTY, we leave our thanks and the pleasure of knowing that they will no longer have us to annoy them with our stupidity and many complaints. May this bequest restore their worn-out spirits before the advent of the next senior class . TO THE JUNIOR CLASS, our closest friends, we leave the most cherished of our possessions: 1 . Our great poise and dignity which they sadly need. 2 . Our places on the football team, debating team, in the dramatics club, the band, the choir --in fact, in all organizations at Peabody High. May they be as successful as we have been. 3. And last, with heavy hearts, we sorrowfully leave to them those mem- bers of our class who could not bear the thought of leaving Peabody High. May they have the ability to graduate from Peabody with the Class of 1967. TO THE SOPHOMORES, we leave a lot of good advice which we shall not specify. We doubt that they would follow it anyway. TO THE FRESHMEN, we leave all of our dreams that did not come true; the joy of giggling at nothing, and the pleasure and pain of puppy love. TO THE EIGHTH GRADERS, we leave a long and hard way to go. With hard work they may make it in five years . Some are known to have taken ten . AND now, in all seriousness, we leave to our dearly beloved school, Peabody High, our blessings and a pledge of loyalty to all of its activities. In addition to the foregoing, certain members of the Class of 1966 make the following individual bequest: CAROLYN HALL -- Love and understanding to teachers and fellow students. HODGES CURTIS -- My ability to be a gentleman to all who do not have it. PEARLIE WHITE -- Thanks to all who helped to make it possible for me to graduate . A stitch in time saves nine. CLASS PROPHECY It is the year 1980 and a beautiful evening in October. Everywhere in the town of Peterspatch are huge posters reading The Peabody 1966 Class Reunion. Many days before, invitations were sent to all former members of the Class of 1966 urging them to attend and promising, particularly, that wonderful entertainment would be given and that all the talent for this program would be from the Class of 1966 . The hour for the great event has arrived. Every seat in the vast new auditorium is filled, and all are eagerly awaiting the performance. The platform is a mass of beautiful flowers and autumn leaves, and the walls are decorated with garlands of pine. It is truly a festive occasion. As I look about me, I see a number of my old classmates . There are ARTHUR MYRICK and EDWIN JONES, two kindhearted friends, who became very wealthy through wise investments, and they now are noted businessmen. The ladies in the front seats, especially JACQUELINE BATTS, JEAN LOVE, and JEWEL STEWART, well known models, are all so stylishly and becomingly dressed that they aroused my curiosity. I am told that their beautiful garments come from the very select, not to say expensive, shops of KATHY POWELL, PEARLIE WHITE, and JANICE RIDLEY, who design gowns for all the best dressed women in the coun- try. They are here themselves, and they look the glass of fashion and the mold of form . Seated near them are HORACE DICKERSON and RAY ROBERTSON, architects who own so much property that they have to keep card indexes of it. At one side, watching with interest, is DEBORAH BUFFORD. I asked about her and was told that she is the head mistress of a very fashionable girls ' school in Hipville and has never married although she has suitors innumerable. Part of her staff is with her. There are PATRICIA BROWN and CECELIA CLAIBORNE, music teachers; KAREN WYCHE, English teacher; ROSEZELIA WEAVER and CECELIA VAUGHAN, history teachers; and SANDRA MORGAN and PEGGIE PARHAM, business teachers. As I look about me, I see three of the greatest mathematicians of all times: JUDY CHEIVES, HENRY RUFFIN, and FRANCIS GRIFFIN. Now entering are five men who are serving our country well. They are CHARLES VAUGHAN, Naval Officer; JAMES WALSTON, ARNOLD WASHINGTON, MELVIN HITE, NORMAN SMITH, and DUDLEY FIELDS, Air Force officers. I see RICHARD PHILLIPS, THOMAS WILLIAMS, and DANIEL BRAGG, lawyers; MARGIE CARTER, CHRISTINE BROWN, LINDA FITZGERALD, CAROLYN FISHER, LAURA BLACKWELL and BRENDA WASHINGTON, their secretaries; and their typist, JUDY POWELL all from the WILLIAMS, PHILLIPS, and BRAGG Law Firm. Entering are ROBERT PEARSON, EUGENE RICHARDSON, SAMUEL ROBINSON and SELLIS ROBINSON, well-known civil engineers. Ill CLASS PROPHECY There are GLORIA SPAIN and ANNIE COOK, directors of Cook and Spain Company from which I am told one may employ expert IBM operators and programers such asPATRICA McLEOD, PATRICIA WILSON, WANDA LEE, VALERIA GLOVER, OLIVIA MILLER, CECIL HOUSTON, NORMA JONES, MAUREEN BRICKHEAD, BAR- BARA HARRISON, GLORIA JONES, REDEMOUS HOWARD, RANDALL SMITH and LEON BLUNT. The people, entering, are receiving a warm reception from the committee at the door. They are DR. RAYMOND RICHARDSON, famous surgeon in a large hospital; attractive as ever, CLEO SUTHERLAND, Superintendent of Nurses in the same hospital; and a few of their dedicated nurses, SHIRLEY WINFIELD, GRACE DAVIS, AUDREY SCOTT, ROSE FELDER, JENNIFER THOMPSON, CECELIA GRAVES, JOHNNIE McNEAL, ARTHENIA PETERSON, PHILATHEA MASON, CHRISTER HOL- MES and RUBY WEBB. If there are any accidents tonight, we feel sure the sufferers will be properly attended to . A round of applause greets the man just taking a seat by the window. He looks familiar and yet not quite familiar enough. I can ' t tell who he is. He ' s turning around. Now I know who he is! RICHARD WILLIAMS, the famous astronaut who just returned from Mars . Seated by MR. WILLIAMS are LLOYD HINES, social worker; JOYCE BALTHROP, choreographer; YVONNE McCOY, child psychiatrist; PATRICIA PRICHETTE, socio- logist; EMMA WASHINGTON, consultant; and professional basketball player, EMANUEL BATTS. There are LEROY FITZGERALD, ALVIN JONES, JERRY RICH- ARDSON, PAUL WILLIAMS and Coach LAWRENCE PARKER of Hipville ' s Killer Professional Football Team. There are HERBERT HAILES and ROY HINES, industrial art teachers; PERCY RUFFIN, music teacher; ULYSSES WYNN and FRANKLYN MADDOX, history teach- ers; THEODORE JONES, DAVID FULLER, JAMES WILLIAMS, physical education teachers; and GERALDINE HARVILLE, YVONNE ANDERSON, PHYLLIS SMITH, and CARROL COLLIER, elementary school teachers here at Peterspatch. From the Un ited Nation we have JUDITH ROBINSON, TONI GALES, VALARIE ABBOTT and VIVIAN LESANE, interpreters. There are some other guests arriving. The audience is indeed excited. They are standing up and applauding. I can ' t see who they are. Now I can see them. It is our most honorable president of the United States, THOMAS JEFFERSON, accompanied by his first lady, MAXINE CHAVIS JEFFERSON, who is a noted psychiatrist; and his executive secretary, JACQUELINE COPELAND. They are, of course, under the careful watch of WILBERT OWENS, HAROLD MASON, WILLIE DICKERSON, and EMMETTE PETERSON, secret service men. HOLLIS WILLIAMS, GERMAINE LEE, BOBBIE GOODWYN, STEPHANIE VALEN- 112 CLASS PROPHECY TINE and HERBERT BOWLES are sketching the people as they come in and they are doing it very well, indeed; for I peeped over their shoulders to see. They have be- come quite famous as illustrators for magazines , stores, and newspapers. Remem- ber their drawings in art class? And now the entertainment is to begin. The lights in the auditorium fade and the footlights flash on. Before the packed house appears a short, dignified figure who makes an eloquent address of welcome. Some of the well turned phrases sound pleasingly familiar. I re- member our famous class debater, EVA LEACH. She was a lawyer for a time and now she is a judge of the State Supreme Court. She acts as mistress of ceremonies, also, and after her excellent speech introduces the performers . The judge announces that after the entertainment, refreshments will be served through the courtesy of LILLIAN WHITE, who is proprietor of the delightful Old Tea Room. As she speaks the words, my mouth waters in anticipation, for I have not for- gotten the delightful refreshments she served many years ago . Now the entertainment begins. There is gay music; then on the darkened stage, in spotlight, appears a singer. My goodness! It ' s ROBERT LUNDY, who always said that he would be a singer. Then the judge introduces a prosperous looking man who he says is a Broadway song writer and the author of many popular song hits . It is CHARLES CARTWRIGHT, and he plays and sings for us his three latest compositions and very good they are too. One was written especially for the occasion. The judge now introduces ANN PARHAM, a famous jazz singer. She sings two songs from her album, Swinging with Ann. Next comes a big surprise -- MISS PATTY SANDRA, the famous movie actress! With her is our old friend, ROSE BLAND, very much changed. She is telling all about Hollywood and how she became famous; she asks if we remember the imitations she used to do in study hour when the teacher was called out of the room. We all remem- ber. It ' s no surprise to us that she is such a success in her pictures. That girl could play anything from Juliet to Mother Goose. Next is a famous trumpeter, who plays the most beautiful music for us. Yes, of course, it ' s MILTON JOHNSON, and he plays better than we always said he would. He has just returned from rendering concerts in Europe and Asia. Now, the entire audience is rising as the performers appear on the stage. Our piano is being played by our composer. We all sing, Auld Lang Syne, after which we shall adjourn for the promised refreshments from White ' s Old Tea Room. It has been a real delight to see all my classmates so young and prosperous, so generous of their time and talent. 113 CLASS COLORS -- Blue and White CLASS POEM BELIEVE IN US Believe in us, dear Peabody, Because we want you to; Believe that after we leave, We ' ll always remember you.
