So it has been with our stay at Peabody High School. Five years of joy, sorrow, pain and pleasure have come to our end. This book, THE PEABODIAN, fea- tures, in particular, the events of our senior year; for it was then that we made our greatest contributions and best exemplified the spirit and behav- ior expected of Peabodians. In years to come, THE PEABODIAN, with its record of our brightest as well as our most serious moments, can serve to revive with in us that feeling of enthusiasm of bygone days and, also, to draw us closer to the memory of Peabody High School. CONTENTS Administration Faculty Organizations Organizational Staff Royalties Underclassmen Features Seniors Sports Advertisements Patrons Senior Directory Index A GRADUATE’S PRAYER Father, I have knowledge, so will you show me now How to use it wisely and find a way somehow To make the world I live in a little better place. And make life with its problems a bit easier to face . . . Grant me faith and courage and put purpose in my days. And show me how to serve Thee in the most effective ways. So all my education, my knowledge and my skill, May find, their true fulfillment as I learn to do Thy Will . . . And may I ever be aware in everything I do That knowledge comes from learning -- and wisdom comes from you. Helen Steiner Rice AD Ml rrrrrrrrr rvrrrrrvr rrrp rrr r rrrrrr In grateful recognition of his unselfish devotion to our interests, we, the graduating class of MCMLXV, dedicate this yearbook to our beloved principal, Mr. Elmore E. Rainey. Whenever we needed someone with whom to share our problems, he always spared a listening ear. Whenever we were in doubt, he always tried to set our minds at ease. Whenever we traveled along the wrong paths, he guided us to the right ones. If in the years to come we succeed in reaching our goals in life, much of the credit will be due to his constant, patient, and wise guidance during our five-year stay at Peabody. 6 A DAY WITH THE PRINCIPAL Mr. Rainey presents an award to Concerned about the future of his graduates, he Sheila Martin for her outstanding chats with a college representative, performance on the National Merit Scholarship test. Turner Mrs. Canzata Turner Counseling, which is one phase of our guidance program, is the function of all staff members, although specific duties may be delegated to certain individ- uals . The primary purpose of our counseling program is to increase the efficiency of the instructional program by working with individuals. Students who are upset, ill, lacking in motivation, anxious, fearful, or unwisely placed, cannot make the best use of their learning opportunities. It is the responsibility of the teacher and the counselor to assist students with such problems and to derive methods, when possible, of preventing their occurrence. Guidance is a continuous process which starts in infancy and continues through- out life. As it related to education, it is a point of view, a process, a service, a way of working with people and an approach to the solution of problems. Based on our philosophy, we believe that guidance is an integral part of our school program o To achieve a workable, constructive program, close cooperation among the staff members, the home, the church, the school and other commu- nity agencies is essential. 9 OFFICE PERSONNEL Mrs, Mable Thorne 10 rrrrrrrrr ’Tvrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrr p ipr p’prp ' prrrrrrp rr ' ' rrrrrrrrr FACULTY DEPARTMENTAL Mrs. Hollins Foreign Language Mr. Jones Health Physical Ed. Mrs. Beatrice McKenzie was born in Cape Charles, Virginia; she now resides at 102 Sheffield Place, Et- trick, Virginia . She attended Bennett College in North Carolina. She is now doing graduate work at Virginia State College . Here at Peabody, Mrs. McKenzie is dedicated to performing the duties of a physical education teacher and a guidance counselor. In expressing her opinion of the seniors at PHS she said: They have great potentiality; they are a ver- satile and an active group of students. If their in- terests and abilities are channeled in the right direction, they should be one of the best graduating classes that Peabody has ever had. I am very happy that I was chosen as one of the spotlight teachers of the year. I feel that this is in- deed an honor. One of the most distinguished teachers who is a member of the History department is Mr. Roland Edward Lewis. Mr. Lewis is known to the Seniors not only as a teacher but as a friend and counselor. Mr. Lewis came to Peabody in 1949. Since then he has taught History and Art. He received his elementary education at Henry Williams, and sec- ondary education at Peabody, in Virginia. Seeing the need to further his education, Mr. Lewis attended Virginia State College where he received his B ' .S . , and he also studied at the University of New York. Mr. Lewis is a faithful member of his church and community . He is a member of the Zion Baptist Church, and belongs to the Following organization: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Delta Omega Chapter. Mr. Lewis now teaches United States and Virginia History. Even though he is not closely intact with the seniors at Pea- body, we consider him as someone we can take our problems and conflicts to for consolation. 17 Mr. Clarence Galloway History Mrs . We hope that the projects we have completed v ill be profitable to all students . May the memory of the works of the Student Council of 1964-65 be long remembered and best of luck to Peabody ' s future Student Council. 1 The Student Council, the student governing organization, has as its function the improvement of student conduct, the promotion of student government and service to the school. It also serves as the intermediate link between faculty, administration and students. The members of the Student Council are chosen by the student body. 26 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Fellow Peabodians! It has been the purpose of the Honor Society to give recognition to students who have maintained high scholastic standards in conjunction with exemplary traits of character. It is on behalf of these students that I extend this challenge to the Peabodians we leave behind! Do not be content just to equal our achievements -- surpass them. Do not strive for the goals we have set -- set even higher ones of your own. Accept the challenge, and be assured that with it go my wishes for success in your pursuits of knowl- edge . Sheila Martin President The Peabody High School Honor Society strives to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character. Upon the recommendation of a member of the faculty to the Chapter Council, a junior or senior who has a cumulative average of 88 percent or higher may be elected to the Peabody High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. 27 PUBLIC A TIONS THE AM. We wish to express our sincere thanks to those persons who unself- ishly relinquished their free time in helping the staff to produce the 1965 edition of THE PEABODIAN. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn path our forebearers prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago. The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our fore- bearers fought are still at issue around the globe - -the belief that the rights of man come not from the gen- erosity of the state but from the hand of God. -- From his Inaugural Address given at the Capitol on January 21, 1961 80 f rrvVYvVT rrrrrrrrrw rrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrw rrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrWr rrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrw rwrrwwrrrw Miss Aiken Homeroom No. A-25 Miss R . However, benefits are often received be- fore the completion of your education. These rewards may be monetary or public recognition of your achievement. I was fortunate enough to be given public recognition for recieving a letter of commendation for my performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Naturally, all students could not expect to receive honors for their scholastic ability but, with increased effort more could, and even those who do not succeed will at least have the satisfaction of knowing that they have tried. Who knows? You may be Peabody ' s first National Merit Scholar. Sincerely, Sheila Martin 105 WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF... 1 . Robert Morgan started thinking in terms of a girlfriend? 2. These 197 students are so exciting, honest, friendly, artistic, studious (need I say more?) that they can ' t be kept out of ones mental data. These students play an important part in this growing society. This graduating class came to Peabody with one thought in mind. This thought was to work hard . . . and they have worked hard. Yes, when these students arrived in 1960, their success was evident. In the eighth grade, we were well represented by our class officers: President, Jacqueline Venable; Vice-President, Robert Morgan; Secretary, Annette Howell; Assistant Secretary, Carolyn E. Johnson; and Chaplain, Delores Massey. These ded- icated students worked hard during our first year at P.H.S. Jacquelyn Booker, Patricia Bland, Joan Stallworth, Brenda Banks, Angela Macklin, Priscilla Lewis, Brenda Wynn, Olivia Batts, Jacqueline Venable, R. Leon Graves, John Williams and Gloria Goode invaded the choir with full force. If it were not for these students, the choir wouldn ' t be the do -re -mi it is today. The first stop for Millicent Garter, Susan Davis, Cassandra Matthews, Angela Macklin, Lillie Cannon, Rachel Hazelwood, Kenneth Taylor, Marie Jones, Joycanne Coker, William Relaford and Charles Chambliss was to the band room to lend their support . A committee was chosen to establish rules and regulations for our Alma Mater. This committee, the Student Council, was headed by Alfred Roy, Daphne Neal, Joy- canne Coker, Betty Hobbs, Clavin Banks, R. Leon Graves, and Delores Massey. To be or not to be, ” was the question presented to Daphne Neal, Brenda Banks, Sheila Martin, Bernice Johnson, Annette Howell, James M. Booker, Vennia Harris, Jacquelyn Booker, Geraldine Gurtis, Patricia Bland, Olivia Batts (secretary) and Wonie Walker when they joined the dramatics club. Forty -six red flanker right, ready, go! Pernell Simms and Joseph Buford joined the football team just so they could hike that ball. Books, books, oodles of books were what Daphne Neal, Brenda Banks, Jacquelyn Booker, and Marie Jones saw as they became library assistants. To make some man a good wife, Juanita Christian joined the New Homemakers of America Club. Wonie Walker, Sheila Martin, Angela Macklin, Daphne Neal and William Darkins joined the science club for one purpose. This purpose was to play with microscopes and other toys of that nature. Our future editors Bernice Johnson, Patricia Bland (reporter), Jacqueline Venable (editor), Jacquelyn Booker (reporter), and Calvin Banks were taken in as members of the journalism club. The industrial arts club would not have survived if it were not for Frances McKeever, John Peterson, and Lee Alexander. High -stepping Claudette Hunter became a majorette. 114 CLASS HISTORY Our freshman class was one to be proud of. We made many important decisions. AMAMOS LATINA was shouted by Andrew Taylor, Haywood Gilliam, Indiana Bryant, Charles Chambliss, Lillie Cannon (consul). Daphne Neal, Brenda Banks, Olivia Batts (treasurer), Sheila Martin, Jacqueline Venable, R. Leon Graves, William Darkins (censor), Joyce Roberts, and William Relaford as they entered the Latin Club. Yea, yea, yea. We needed Brenda Banks, Senora Edwards, and Priscilla Lewis on the cheering squad to make these words ring yea, yea, yea!! The band still needed a few more tooters, so Betty Hobbs, Venus Jones, Russell Taylor, Sheila Martin, Carmencita Stewart, and John Williams surrendered their aid. Our choir wanted to rise to a do-re-mi-fa position. Upon hearing this, Marie. Jones, Marie Birriel, James Lanier, Ora Phillips and Jonanna Jackson signed their names . Some senior members having retired, the SCA received Marva Baskerville as a new representative . Having heard how much fun it was to play with the bunsen burner from Vice- President Daphne Neal, Brenda Banks, Alfred Roy, Jacquelyn Booker, Margaret Graves, and William Relaford joined the science club. When James M. Booker learned that the journalism club wanted someone to write poems, he presented himself at the next gathering. Douglas Evans ' aid. was surely needed on our baseball team. The dramatics club posted the name of its new play. Gail Robinson, William Jarratt, Silas Mitchell, Marva Baskerville, Jacqueline Venable, and Ronald Crenshaw saw the sign and ran to get a part. Still trying to plan his future, John Peterson joined the ICT. Aging fast we became sophomores. The newest fad was to see how many clubs one could join. I think we set a record. La, la, la, la, la was the latest thing when William Jarratt and Robert Thompson joined the choir. Dum, dum, dum, dum on the television aroused Silas Mitchell, James Lanier, R. Leon Grave, Daphne Neal, Louis Whiting, and Brenda Wynn ' s interest in the band. Wham! Donald Williams hit a home run for our baseball team, bringing James Harris off third base. Needing other members, the industrial arts club hauled in Charles Chambliss, Louis Whiting, John Williams, Rose Branch, John Peterson, Raymond Buford and Juanita Christian. 115 CLASS HISTORY Everybody yelled, Run, run, run, ' ' as our track team (James Lanier, Lee Alexander, Alfred Roy, and Mack Curley) edged to victory. James Lanier, James M. Booker, Robert Thompson, Ronald Crenshaw, and Douglas Evans became patrols, thus getting special permission to break rules. Brenda Banks, Marva Baskerville, Joyce Wynn, Mack Curley, Adelle Winfield, Senora Edwards, Gail Robinson, Priscilla Lewis, Ruth Hawks, and Margaret Graves had the spirit as they took their place in the pep club. Brenda Banks and Angela Macklin learned how to really shake, rattle, and roll in the modern dance group. Hup! hup! marched Jacqueline Venable on her first majorette assignment. Carmencita Stewart and Gail Robinson hopped on the cheering squad. William Darkins was our star Junior Varsity football tackier. Marva Baskerville, Beverly Epps, Joyce Wynn, Gail Robinson, Rose Branch, Shirley Yarn, and Louis Whiting leaped into the FBLA. Oh, Juniors love P.H.S. -- this statement could be proved by President Betty Hobbs; Vice-president Alfred Roy; Secretary Joyce Edmonds; Assistant Secretary Annette Howell; Treasurer Senora Edwards; and Chaplain Delores Massey. William Jarratt, Silas Mitchell, John Peterson (varsity), Douglas Evans (varsity), James Harris (co -varsity, captain), and William Relaford (varsity) geared right smack dab onto the football team. How sweet it was while William Jarratt, Silas Mitchell, Lillie Cannon, Betty Hobbs, Venue Jones and Jacqueline Venable played in the orchestra. Olivia Batts stopped the fun when she became president of the science club. The Honor Society is an entirely new organization since Haywood Gilliam, Charles Chambliss, Betty Hobbs (president), Millicent Carter, Kenneth Taylor, Donald Williams, Russel Taylor, Delores Massey, Lillie Cannon, Venus Jones, Jacqueline Venable, Angela Macklin, Brenda Banks, Sheila Martin, Patricia Bland, Olivia Batts (treasurer), Wonie Walker, Daphne Neal (assistant secretary), Paulette Bates, Calvin Banks, and William Darkins joined. Becoming popular, Charles Chambliss joined the SCA and the history club. During this same time William Darkins became the history club ' s president. Our high -stepping drum -major was Mack Curley. Donald Williams, Brenda Banks, Sheila Martin, Venus Jones, Patricia Bland, Millicent Carter, Angela Macklin, Calvin Banks, and Annette Howell were needed to help make the polygon club a success. Florence McCray and Wonie Walker filled the Choir ' s new vacancy. 116 CLASS HISTORY The industrial arts club welcomed Thomas Geter, Willie Noise, Robert Thompson, Francis Hill, William Buford, James Harris and Clarence Dillard. The members were really taking over in the band. Betty Hobbs became vice- president; Lillie Cannon, student director; and Millicent Carter, secretary. Kenneth Taylor (co -captain) and Sheila Martin did wonders for our tennis team. Rachel Hazelwood, Nancy Pulliam, Agertha Richardson, Marie Birriel, Carolyn Birchett, Frances McKeever, Jacqueline Venable, Shirley Yarn, and Ora Phillips made the pep club much larger. The FBLA took on new meanings with Rachel Hazelwood, Nancy Pulliam, Nancy Boone, and Louis Whiting. The art club was not surprised to see Mack Curley, Claudette Hunter, Bernice Johnson, Vera jonnson, Carolyn Birchett and Robert Ihompson. Wow! Billy Simpson did our J.V. basketball team justice. Rose Branch learned something in the NHA. Shirley Yarn edged into the ICT. John Williams became a patrol, hoping to stay in the halls longer. This is the year we have been waiting for, our senior year. We made a big decision as we chose Betty Hobbs (president), Walter Massey (vice-president), Joyce Edmonds (secretary), Adelle Winfield (assistant secretary), Millicent Carter (treasurer), and Delores Massey (chaplain). Geraldine Curtis, Angela Mack lin, Carolyn J. Johnson, Carolyn E . Johnson, Daphne Neal, Cassandra Matthews (reporter), Millicent Carter, Mabel Carey (president), Marie Birriel (secretary), Venus Jones, William Wyche, Thomas Geter, Lillie Cannon, Kenneth Taylor , William Buford, Clarence Dillard, Brenda Banks, William Relaford, Angela Macklin, Alfred Roy, and Jacqueline Venable swung into motion as they became part of the history club . Tired of arguing with their friends, Marie Jones, Charles Chambliss, R. Leon Graves, Cassandra Matthews, Bernice Johnson, Angela Macklin, Susan Davis, Sheila Martin (president), Russell Taylor, Gloria Goode, Indiana Bryant (assistant secre- tary), Haywood Gilliam, William Darkins (vice-president) ,and Angela Macklin (parliamentarian) became members of the debating team hoping to meet someone else with whom they could argue. Annette Howell, Charles Chambliss, Susan Davis, James Lanier, Daphne Neal (secretary), Kenneth Taylor, Pernell Simms, Brenda Wynn, William Wyche, Angela Macklin, Russell Taylor, Joan Stallworth, Marie Jones, and Venus Jones wanted to have a swinging time so they dived into the science club. The choir had an opening for Wayne Hill and William Darkins. Beware descendants! Jacqueline Venable and Brenda Banks were accepted as mem- bers of the Future Teachers Association. 117 CLASS HISTORY Frances McKeever, Wayne Hill, Joyce Wynn, Bernice Johnson and Paulette Bates pledged to be faithful members in the ICT. Angela Macklin was the My Fair Lady of the dramatics club. Francis Hill and William Wyche were our new additions to the varsity football team. It wasn ' t known that the NHA couldn ' t prepare one for marriage until after Daphne Neal, Jonanna Jackson, Claudette Hunter (secretary), Gail Robinson, Geraldine Curtis, Ruth Hawkes, Mabel Carey, Priscilla Lewis, and Florence McCray were members. Although Joyce Wynn, Jonanna Jackson, Andrew Taylor, Carolyn J. Johnson, Billy Simpson, Marva Baskerville, and Clarence Dillard could not draw a straight line, they were accepted in the art club. Thinking they could get into games free, William Wyche, William Darkins (presi- dent), Carolyn Birchette, Carolyn J. Johnson, Mabel Carey, Daphne Neal, Thomas Geter, Willie Noise, Florence McCray, Bernice Johnson (vice-president), and Jacquelyn Booker (secretary) wanted to be in the Jr. Athletic Association. Florence McCray, Daphne Neal, and Russell Taylor got on the tennis team because they had some extra energy. If it weren ' t for Jacquelyn Booker, Brenda Banks, Joyce Twitty, and Jacqueline Venable (our publication friends) you would not have read about us in the newspaper each week. Betty Hobbs, Jacqueline Venable, Hugh Scott, Jonanna Jackson, Venus Jones, Joy- canne Coker, Andrew Taylor, Carolyn Birchette, Carolyn J. Johnson, Marie Birriel, Daphne Neal, Carolyn E . Johnson, Bernice Johnson, Cassandra Matthews, Claudette Hunter, Mabel Carey, Millicent Carter, Agertha Richardson, Jacquelyn Booker, Carmencita Stewart, William Jarratt, Delores Massey, Joyce Twitty, William Darkins, Donald Williams, Billy Simpson, Calvin Banks, Kenneth Taylor, Clarence Dillard, Annette Howell, Brenda Banks, Sheila Martin, Wonie Walker, Brenda Wynn, Lillie Cannon, William Relaford, Gloria Goode, Susan Davis, Joan Stallworth, Donald Parham, Alfred Roy, George Chambliss, Charles Chambliss, Ireatha Hines, Connie Claiborne, Robert Morgan, Gloria Glass, Haywood Gilliam, Richard Dickerson, Major Bland, Timothy Walker, Gloria Miles, Shirley Creighton, Patricia Bland, Cornelia Jones, and James Flowers was so enthusiastic that they decided to join the foreign language club. Wanting to uphold school rules Geraldine Curtis, Marie Birriel, Ronald Crenshaw (captain), Jacquelyn Booker, and James M. Booker (lieutenant) joined the patrol force. The orchestra took Millicent Carter and Gloria Goode in as new members. Marie Birriel, Angela Macklin, Louis Whiting, Sheila Martin, Marie Jones, Gloria Glass, Carmencita Stewart, Delores Massey, Evelyn Piercy, Joyce Wynn, Calvin Banks, Mabel Carey, James J. Booker, Adelle Winfield, Mary Goode, Rachel Hazelwood, Shirley Yarn, Nancy Pulliam, Paulette Bates, Margaret Graves, Gassandra Matthews, Vennia Harris, Celestine Jackson, and Daphne Neal helped expand our journalism club. 118 CLASS HISTORY Three new additions to the SCA were Delores Massey (president), Wonie Walker, Pernell Simms and Susan Davis. Sheila Martin (president), Wonie Walker (assistant secretary), Haywood Gilliam (vice-president), and William Darkins (sgU -at -arms) gave the Honor Society cheerfulness , Paulette Bates and Beverly Epps had plenty of pep to offer the pep club. Those who obtained positions on the yearbook staff were; (Editor-in-chief) Louis Whiting, (Associate Editor) Jacquelyn Booker, (Business Manager) James J. Booker, (Circulation Manager) Joyce Wynn, (Photo Editor) James M. Booker, (Assistant Photo Editor) Patricia Bland, (Art Editor) Mack Curley, (Sports Editor) Calvin Banks, (Organizations Editor) Evelyn Piercy, (Co -Organizations Editor) Delores Massey, (Feature Editor) Violet Smith, (Co-Feature Editor) Gloria Glass, (Senior Class Editor) Carmencita Stewart, (Co -Senior Class Editor) Daphne Neal, (Exchange Editor) Angela Macklin, (Reporters) Mabel Carey, Marie Birriel, Gwendolyn Murchinson, Vennia Harris, (Typists) Adelle Winfield, Mary Goode, Rachel Hazelwood, Shirley Yarn, (Proofreaders) Paulette Bates, Margaret Graves, Cassandra Matthews, Carrol Jones, (Royalties) Sheila Martin. Through these years we have had many proud moments. In that eighth grade, R. Leon Graves made the All -State Choir. At the Science and Mathematics Conference, Alfred Roy placed first in math and Angela Macklin and William Darkins placed second and fourth, respectively, in general science. Jacqueline Venable and R. Leon Graves made the All -State Choir. Haywood Gilliam and Alfred Roy placed third and fourth, respectively, in elementary algebra at the Science and Math Conference. Haywood Gilliam went on to win first place in algebra at the State Conference. Olivia Batts became vice-president of the SCA. All this happened in the ninth grade . In the tenth grade, Haywood Gilliam placed second at the District Conference in geometry. Olivia Batts won the title of Miss Peabody. Olivia also made All -State Choir. Jacqueline Venable and William Relaford became members of the All -State Choir in the eleventh grade. Angela Macklin and William Darkins placed second and fourth in chemistry at the Science and Math Conference. At that same conference, Venus Jones, Millicent Carter, and Charles Chambliss placed first, second and fourth, respectively, also in chemistry. During this same year, Jacquelyn Booker was a contestant for the title of Miss Peabody. Brenda Banks, Senora Edwards, Cornelia Jones, Ireatha Hines, and Patricia Bland were contestants for the Miss Peabody pageant in the twelfth grade. Millicent Carter was chosen highest ranking student in the ninth, tenth and eleventh grades . Yes, the senior class of 1965 is one to be proud of and remembered by all. 119 SENIOR 120 SPOTLIGHT 121 Mrs . F . D . Brown C. W. Callaway Mrs . S . B . Gist Miss F . D . Sharpe Miss G. M. Snowy. The discovery was made on December 21, by contractor JOHN WILLIAMS tearing down the old Peabody High School on Wesley Street, during the city ' s urban renewal week, initiated by Mayor JACQUELINE VENABLE. The diary was legible enough to read certain passages pertaining to the summer of 1968. The diary was deciphered by SUSAN DAVIS, EMMA JONES, and WILLIAM BUFORD, foreign language interpreters. It read this way: June 13 - - I am getting up in the years and this will probably be the last time my wife and I will get to see the world. School is out and I am going to see the world in style . June 17 -- We are on a plane now and surprisingly enough MARVA BASKERVILLE and LUCILLE PHELPS are the stewardesses. MARVA, overtaken by the sudden ascension, drops hot coffee on the people sitting in front of us. They were WILLIAM DARKINS, JOYCE EDMONDS, and SHEILA MARTIN, now business partners. SHEILA is a physicist; DARKINS and JOYCE, chemists. Progress is not our most important product. Well, that ' s their motto. SHEILA entertained us for quite a while. It was brought out that the plane was being driven by BILLY SIMPSON and co-pilot, WILLIE NOISE. We are preparing to land now. Upon arrival at Anderson -Roy Airport, named for the world-renowned engineers, WILLIAM ANDERSON and ALFRED ROY, there seems to be a great deal of commotion. The private plane of the famous New York model, ANNIE BELL SELLERS has also landed. Her party includes an army escort, THOMAS GETER; two stewardesses, VERA JOHNSON and PRISCILLA LEWIS; her doctor, CLARENCE DILLARD; a cosmetologist, ANN JOHNSON; lawyer, LEON GRAVES; and a public relations agent, RONALD CRENSHAW. Incidentally, Miss SELLERS ' clothes are exclusively by the WAHH dressmakers, SHIRLEY WIGGINS, GLORIA ARCHER, JEANETTE HAWKE S, and RUTH HAWKE S. June 23 - - I have a dreadful headache. I stopped by the local drugstore, Kampus Konner, belonging to GEORGE GHAMBLISS and JAMES LANIER. GEORGE suggested that my recurring headaches might be attributed to other causes. He showed me this card. It read; Walk right in, sit right down, baby let me shrink your head. Psychologists were ANNETTE HOWELL, GASSANDRA MATTHEWS, PATRIGIA BULLOGK, CHARLES GOOD RIDGE, ANGELA MAGK LIN, and GLORIA GLASS (child psychologist). But I did not take this advice. June 29 -- New York is lovely this time of year. I am standing in front of the IBM Building. Thinking IBM stood for Interplanetary Bunny Makers, I walked in expecting to see some rabbits, but instead there stood MARY GOODE, CAROLYN BIRCHETT, CELESTINE JACKSON, MARIE BIRRIEL, JON ANN A JACKSON, CAROLYN J. JOHNSON, BEVERLY EPPS, EVELYN PIE RCY, and PATRICIA BLAND, all crowded around a magazine. IBM turned out to be International Business Machines, and these lovely young ladies were all technicians and operators. Their boss, CALVIN BANKS, 124 CLASS PROPHECY and his accountants JAMES J. BOOKER, LOUISE. WHITING, JACQUELYN V. BOOKER, WILLIAM JARRATT, and ROSE MASSENBURG, his private secretary, were looking at the July edition of Ebony featuring the world ' s top Negro business and professional men and women: VENUS JONES and OLIVIA BATTS, pediatricians; MABEL CAREY, missionary to the Congo; DONALD WILLIAMS, GEORGE THOMPSON and HENRY HOLLOWAY, architects of Build Them or Wreck Them ; JOYCE TWITTY, pediatrician, NORMA HARRIS, the New Perry Mason; MILLICENT CARTER, BETTY HOBBS, and MARION BRIGKELL, mathematicians; JUANITA P. CHRISTIAN, Marriage Counselor for the Dear Nabby” articles; CHARLES CHAMBLISS, nuclear physicist and discoverer of a nuclear accelerator; HAYWOOD GILLIAM and SHIRLEY CREIGHTON, surgeons; interior designers DAPHNE NEAL and GWENDOLYN MURCHISON; GLORIA GOODE, leading soprano of the Cosmopolitan Opera Company, (She sang the Third Floor Suit, Concerto in A Flat, and Air for the Saxaphone and Tuba”); and DONALD PARHAM, owner of the Silver Plunger Plumbing Corporation. July 10 Today we flew to Paris, France. July 11 We visited the Sorbonne here. The staff of this world ' s famous institution was most impressive and distinguished. WILLIAM RELAFORD and GEORGE ELDER headed the 20 mill ion -dollar School of Engineering. RAYMOND BUFORD was contrib- uting magnificently to the Department of Electronic Engineering. ARROW TODD was the electrician and BATTINTO BATTS, a draftsman. JOHN TATUM, JOSEPH BUFORD, and SAMUEL MINTER were the mechanics; DOUGLAS EVANS, radio repairman; CHARLES WASHINGTON, an industrial arts teacher; and body fender repairman, JAMES HARRIS. July 23 -- Today was devoted to Le Lorre, a museum in Paris. We came across several interesting paintings. One resembled an upside-down fishing net; the other, a hurdle. No doubt these were some of Van Dyke ' s, Rembrandt ' s or Michaelangelo ' s . My wife read the fine print; paintings by MACK CURLEY and FRED PENDER. These abstract paintings represented CONNIE CLAIBORNE, baseball star and LEE ALEX- ANDER, Olympic track star. Come to think of it, I do recall hearing about these stars from sports writer WILLIE FOBB ' S article Gill Street Tech Boys Make Good,’ July 30 -- Due to unavoidable circumstances we were called back home. My mother- in-law was stricken with arthritis and taken to a hospital. Speech therapist, LILLIE CANNON and physical therapist, JOAN STALLWORTH are called in for consultation. Also on the floor is BRENDA BANKS, B.S., MA. , A.B., PH.D.,D.D., S.O.S., and F.O.B. and MD., obstetrician at tending to her little people. The Hospital is over- flowing with nurses. They include MOLLIE BRAXTON, GERALDINE CURTIS, FLORENCE McCRAY, SHIRLEY YARN, GLORIA MILES, RUTH SPENSER, JOYCE ROBERTS, SENORA EDWARDS, ORA PHILLIPS, and WONIE WALKER. August 3 - - I was proud to be asked to okay the applications of several persons eligible for jobs in Petersburg schools for the coming school year. SANDRA WATT was considered as librarian. THELMA BRANCH, history teacher; JOYCE WYNN and MARGRET GRAVES, business teachers; RICHARD DICKERSON, coach; STANLEY BARBER, industrial arts teacher; CLAUDETTE HUNTER and CHARLENE VAUGHAN elementary teachers; ANDREW TAYLOR, Spanish instructor, August 10 -- I met PERNELL SIMMS on the street today. PERNELL is a professor at Virginia State College, (elementary education). He was going over to the YMCA, 125 CLASS PROPHECY so I decided to join him. It was quite an experience. ROLAND SHERROD was the recreational supervisor with a whole staff of secretaries. SHIRLEY GLENN, DELORES PERRY, VENNIA HARRIS, SANDRA BATTS, and NANCY PULLIAM were all on hand. Also, on the staff were three stenographers, RACHEL HAZELWOOD, GLORIA ROSE, and GWENDOLYN MURCHISON. To provide for the welfare of the young men and women were social workers IREATHA HINES, DELORES MASSEY, CLAIRETHA MASON, AGERTHA RICHARDSON, CARMENCITA STEWART, CAROLYN HAZEL and CHARLES GOODE. August 31 -- My summer was most rewarding. It was like peeping into a crystal ball, seeing the past, present and future. But now the ball is fading and a purple haze is covering everything. The crystal clouds, and I see no more. AUTOGRAPHS 126 CLASS POEM by James M. Booker, Jr. O, Peabody, our Alma Mater, we make this pledge to thee; To love, cherish, honor, and always remember thee. To truthful, honorable, loyal, and ever grateful be. To keep pushing ever onward, in solem reverence to thee. For five whole years we ' ve worked here for ourselves and for the school. We ' ve advanced like little fish, to the sea from the little pool. We ' ve prepared ourselves for the outside world, we ' ve learned the basic rules. We ' ve learned the laws, the government that guides us after school. To those we leave behind we leave this sound advice. Keep pushing ever onward for what you want in life. Love your teachers, love your school. Do what you know is right. We graduated (so will you) on similar wise advice. With mixture of bliss and sadness, with stately heads held high We leave our Alma Mater -- the great Peabody High; From us the class of ' 65 of the great Peabody High To you -- the faculty, the school, we bid you a fond Good-bye . The Lions scored two quick touchdowns in the first period on a 40 -yard run by Alvin Jones and on a 15 -yard scoring aerial from quarterback James Flowers to Leroy Huckabuck Fitzgerald. The third Lion touchdown came in the third quarter on a eight - yard run by Flowers. The final touchdown came in the last quarter when Leroy Dickens picked up a fumble on the Lion ' s 15, and ran it in. Jones and Dickens were consistent gainers on the ground all night, while Fitzgerald was on the receiving end of most of Flower ' s passes. The Poets were unable to muster a scoring threat against a stout defense led by William Wyche, Joseph Armstrong, Melvin Clark, Alphonso Crocker, William Relaford, Paul Williams, James Harris and Jones . The Lions were without the services of their regular quarterback, Wayne Powell. 184 LION’S BOW TO SUFFOLK, 22-0 East Suffolk rallied for three touchdowns and a field goal in the second half to defeat the Peabody Lion ' s by a score of 22-0, after both teams had fought on even terms throughout the first half. Most of the Lion ' s offensive fireworks were supplied by the passing of James Flowers and the running of Alvin Jones and Leroy Dickens. Outstanding on defense for the Lions were Joseph Buford, Paul Williams, Nelson Archer, and Melvin Clarke . The Lions saw several scoring opportunities go by boys as they were forced to give up posses- ion of the pigskin deep in enemy territory on fumbles . Ballard and Beamen share the scoring duties for Suffolk. Beaman scored on sprints of 60 and 20 yards, while Ballard scored on a 10 -yard run and kicked a 20 -yard field goal. He also passed for an extra point. 185 ARMSTRONG DEFEATS PEABODY BY 14-0 The Armstrong Wildcats of Richmond scored in the second and third quarters and defeated the Pea- body Lions by a score of 14-0. The Wildcats blocked all efforts of the Lions to score despite the fine attempts made by both Wayne Powell and James Flowers at quarterback. The Lions couldn ' t build up enough momentum to get the ball across the goal line. Two costly Lion errors proved to be their down- fall. An interception of Flowers to Shaw pass led to the first Wildcat touchdown. A Peabody fumble on its 20 at the start of the second half set up the second T.D. Capers of the Wildcat scored both Touchdowns . Defensive standouts for the Lions were Alphonso Crocker, P. Williams, N. Archer, and William Relaford. 186 PEABODY EVENS RECORD AT 2-2 WITH WIN OVER BOOKER T The Peabody Lions scored in the first and third periods to beat Booker T of Norfolk, 13-2. A Booker T fumble early in the game set up the first touchdown, with Pernell Simms, who did an excellent job both defensively and offensively, recovering. The Lions moved the ball to the 30 -yard line, where quarterback Wayne Powell took it over for the score. The visitors threatened to score several times, but were thrown back by a tough Lion defense headed by Simms, Paul Williams, Alvin Jones, Solomon Miles, Arthur Myrick, William Wyche, Joseph Buford, Leroy Fitzgerald, and Oliver Shaw. Fitzgerald and Jones came up with intercept- ions to halt Booker T ' s drives. Powell passed to Shaw for Peabody ' s second touchdown in the third quarter on a play covering 20 yards. This same combination collaborated for the extra point. Lions fullback, Leroy Dickens, picked up 85 yards for the night. Peabody ' s punter, Willie Fobbs, did a fine job punting and James Flowers also did a good job at quarter- back filling in for Powell. The visitors got their only two points in the first quarter when a host of Booker T. tacklers threw Powell for a safety in his own end zone. 187 LIONS ARE BEATEN IN HOMECOMING TILT, 7-6 The Peabody Lions dropped a heart-breaking 7-6 decision to the Huntington Vikings of Newport News in their Homecoming game. The Vikings got a first period touchdown and picked up the extra point. From that point they were held in check by the Lions ' defense led by Arthur Myrick, William Wyche, Joe Buford, Joe Armstrong, Leroy Dickens, Charles Vaughan, Curtis, and Melvin Clarke . The Vikings ' score came on an eight -yard run by Robert Whitaker which capped an 80 -yard touchdown drive. He ran for the extra point which proved to be the margin of victory. The Peabody score was set up by a recovered fumble by Wyche on the Huntington 19. The Lions marched 81 yards for the T.D., with Dickens pick- ing up a crucial first down on a fourth down play to keep the drive alive. James Flowers who was sub- stituting for Dickens took a hand off, and went 19 yards for the score . The try for the extra point failed. 188 DRAGONS DO A N PEABODY, 8-0 The Maggie Walker Green Dragons scored a touchdown in the first period and added a safety in the third quarter to beat the Peabody Lions, 8-0. The Green Dragons threw up a sturdy defense to halt the Lions offensively. The Lions also checked the running and passing game of the Dragons, but the Dragons got through to Willie Fobbs and threw him for a safety. The Lions penetrated to the Dragons ' 15, but gave up the ball on downs . They recovered a fumble at the 19, but were unable to score. Late in the second quarter Leroy Fitzgerald returned a punt 60 yards, and the Lions managed to get to the 30 at the end of the half. Late in the third quarter, a Solomon Miles inter- ception gave the Lions the ball, but they lost it back in a fumble. Joseph Buford recovered a Walker fum- ble late in the game, but time ran out. Defensive stalwarts for the Lions were Pernell Simms, James Harris, Buford, Melvin Clarke, William Wyche and Joseph Armstrong. 189 LIONS DEFEAT PHENIX, 14-12 The Peabody Lions won a hard-fought 14-12 decision over the Phenix Pirates of Hampton. The Lions, and fullback Jerry Richardson, out- played the Pirates during the entire game to gain the victory. Richardson, returning to the lineup for the first time since the second game of the season, scored all 14 of the Lion ' s points. The Pirates scored twice, but were unable to con- vert after either touchdown. The entire defensive platoon played an outstanding game. The Lions repeatedly molested the Pirates offensive backs. This victory brought the Lions record to 3-4. 190 LIONS BEAT ST. EMMA, END SEASON AT 4-4 The Peabody Lions closed out their football season with a 25-0 victory over St. Emma, making it a break-even season for Coach Albert Jones ' Lions. The first Lion score came as a result of a 35 -yard run to the five by Jerry Richardson, and on the next play, he took it over from that point. The second touchdown came late in the third quarter on a 35 -yard pass from Wayne Powell to Nelson Archer. The third touchdown came in the final quarter, with Solomon Miles running 45 yards for this one . The defensive unit played one of its best games of the season. Paul Williams, one of the Lion ' s rugged front four, recovered a fourth period fumble in the end zone for the final score. Other defensive stars were Melvin Clark, William Relaford, Joseph Buford, Charles Vaughn, William Wyche, and James Harris . 191 Thomas Crawley, James Johnson, Donald Parham, Leroy Fitzgerald, Carl Bailey, Kenneth Edmonds, Oliver Shaw, Richard Phillips, Richard Dickerson, Osborne Richardson, Leon Blimt, Emanuel Batts, and Coach Carl Peal. Although now you are graduates, you can do a great service for the rest of us, if you never cease to be students--iooking for opportunities and ways to cherish the American system of free enter- prise and to improve the American way of life. You can be thank- ful for free schools in a country where you are free to worship and work and think and talk as you please. This is your heritage from the people who built America. The future is pretty largely in your hands--you must be vigilant and active to combat the evils of socialism, government domination of private industry, and all the isms that destroy democracy.
