Proof is offered in the FEATURES Classroom, outside activities spark life at Peabody High Within the classroom Peabodians find pop quizzes and homework all a part of the daily routine. A pensive Biology student disects under the ever- vigilant eyes of an alert instructor. A senior English class acts out Shakesperian drama. A government class contrasts Communism and the principles of American freedom. However, life at Peabody reaches beyond the classroom. After school Peabody athletes as- semble with coaches for pep talks and strategy talks . Band members liven up the spirit with a rhythmic march at an after-school pep rally. After school, a staff room light burns late as a dedicated writer seeks inspiration. A Peabodian cheer, not yet polished with practice, rever- berates through an empty hall, the murmur of voices drifts from a lighted room as a confused student seeks help from a dedicated teacher, an actor repeats a faulty line, a talented pianist practices . 28 A weary athlete leaves the locker room after a hard but needed practice . A roar of applause sweals from the auditorium as a talented Peabodian performs . The swish of taffeta and the scent of roses announces a class prom, A dark auditorium becomes ablaze with light, seniors clothed in white and blue file past, a graduation ceremony begins . Other days find Seniors touring cam- puses, juniors taking competitive exami- nations, wistful sophomores wishing, and freshmen just waiting. At PHS there is time for many activities and emotions , Each invites the thought, the cry, This is the time! Amidst screams, laughs, and cheers, the Homecoming assembly opened. Skits proved to be a humorous tonic for the day ' s fun and pep talks raised the hopes for victory to new heights . Climaxing the assembly was the beautiful ceremony of coronation . The game at night was our climatic moment . We cheered loudly and our team did its best; we defeated our op- ponents from Powatan . We attended the dance after the game in a festive mood as we whirled to music and did the latest steps . Afterwards, streamers lay about, the dance floor was empty, but Homecoming, 1963, will remain in every heart. 34 In line with our Homecoming assem- bly, these beauties helped to spark a very gay and colorful affair as they paraded in evening gowns before their peers. ► ♦ Miss Yearbook 1962-63 Diane Bracey In any glimpse into the past, it takes a beauty or two, or three, or even four, to make the picture complete . . . Some of us had already decided where we were going to further our education and we really wanted to become acquainted with people from the schools of our choice. But for others who were still undecided, it afforded an excellent opportunity to perhaps finally decide upon a school after having listened to and interviewed the various representatives from the schools present. Some of the schools repre- sented were Morgan, Union, Penn State, Virginia State, Hampton, Smith-Madden, and others . These students had completed the required work of elementary school students, and had matured enough to accept the responsibilities of high school students. These same students, plus a few new faces, have now completed the work required of high school students. They are now ready to accept the responsibilities of the future parents, scientists, politicians and teachers of our country. Before they say farewell to one another and depart, let us return to the year of 1959 and watch them progress scholastically, athletically and culturally. There were many frightened girls and boys at Peabody that September day. They wanted very badly to become a part of the school family. They wanted and received help from their teachers. As a result of this help, Mary Jones, Paulette Mayfield, Maxine Hooper, Mary Watson and Ernest Givens joined the choir. Joseph Johnson, Lelia Mayfield, Barbara Ford, Sandra Hill and John Richardson joined the band. The Student Council received many abled bodied persons such as Marjorie Dyson, Lamara Hines, Lynne Wright, Maxcine Cannon, Sandra Lowe, Florence Turner, Barbara Thrower, Robert Thweatt, Veronica Birckhead, Clyde Bailey and Hibernia Parham. Many of us had matured more than others, but we were still freshmen. Adding their voices to the famous Peabody Choir were James Smith, Marjorie Dyson, Lelia Mayfield, Barbara Ford and Vera Abbott. Lelia Mayfield, Patricia Smith and Ernest Givens joined the Student Council and by the way he became President of the Student Council in his senior year. The Yearbook Staff was one of the final and most important committees of the Graduating Class of 1964. As we approach the culmination of our activities here at Peabody, there is, in our hearts, a feeling of accomplishment overshadowed by sadness. However, we must realize that our time here at Peabody has been well spent. We owe an invaluable debt of gratitude to our teachers who have, since 1959, struggled to improve us in all phases of education. We feel that we have been transformed from immature, indecisive individuals to nature, responsible young adults. We hope that this change is evident. There have been times when we thought the end would never come; it is here and we are sad. The song is ended, but the melody will linger on. Once aboard the plane we are greeted by the airline stewardess, who is none other than MISS BRENDA GANEY. All of the passengers except one, are enroute to a class reunion of the 1964 graduating class of Pea- body High School. Seemingly amazed at the fact that everyone was acquainted, the passenger in sheer puzzlement, approaches the stewardess and begins to question her regarding that fact. She proceeds to tell him that all the persons aboard are former classmates and they are getting together after 20 years. If you pay close attention, she said, I ' ll tell you a little about each one. Let ' s begin by looking straight ahead and to the left. There you see Miss, or I should say DR. MARJORIE DYSON one of the world ' s foremost scientists who has just perfected the solar bomb. Seated next to her is MISS MARJORIE TURNER, a Spanish interpreter for the United States Department of Immigration. Directly behind them we see MISS SANDRA SAUNDERS, an I. B. M. Systems Trainer at West End High, one of California ' s leading high schools. Beside her is MR. WILLIS MADDEN, Audio Specialist for the CBA-TV in Moscow. SANDRA HILL and SUSAN SMITH, who are laboratory technicians at Calcutta State Mental Insti- tution, are seated in seats G1 and G2. PROFESSOR GEORGE BELL, head of the History Department at the University of Istanbul with WALLACE WILLIAMS as his assistant, are sitting across the aisle fromd and G2. Also employed by this University is MR. JAMES HILL, Professor of Biology. In seats K1 and K2 we see ANNE BROWN and GLORIA REDWINE, nurses in the Peace Corps serving in Africa. MR. HENRY BUFORD is District Attorney for the city of Leningrad and MISS VIVIAN BLAND is one of that city ' s best Attorneys. JEAN HARRISON and EVA REID are two of the Unites States foremost Psychologists. They ' re also the stars of a T. V. show titled, The Thirteenth Hour. All of the empty seats you see will be occupied by other members of the class who ' ll make the return trip. The passengers returned to their seat and just as they sat down, the voice of the pilot, Ralph Smith, is heard saying, All passengers please fasten your seat belts. We are now preparing to make a land- ing at the Essen-Dortmund-Duisburg National Airport. When the plane lands and the passengers are all off the plane, they are led to Chauffeur-Driven limousines which are to take them on a tour of the city. The tour begins on Peking Avenue, where the main attraction is the Public Library and the Librarian is MISS BARBARA FORD. As we go on, we come to the University of Essen -Dortmund -Duisburg, where JAMES MORRIS is professor in charge of the Trade Department with BOBBY ARCHER as his assistant. Working in the Science Department, we find MR. RONNIE GOODE and MR. LUTHER ARCHER, two of the city ' s most efficient physicists, and as head of the Math Department we find BARBARA THROWER with MARY ODOM as her most able assistant. Next we pass by the Golf Course and on the green we see two of the world ' s best Pro-Golfers, BURT OLIVER, who has participated in the U. S.G. A. and the Masters Tournament, and CARL MATTHEW, who has participated in many International Matches and won the American Cup in New Mexico. As we leave Peking Avenue and come into London Avenue, we see one of the city ' s high schools, Essen High. In the event alterations are necessary, JUDY PRATT, the head seamstress, is always on hand. One of this city’s most prominent funeral homes is Nickerbockers. There we find in charge of all business transactions MR. ERNEST GIVENS. We aim to please, is the slogan of Lee ' s Flying A Service Station, v here JOHNATHAN LEE is proprietor and JAMES MACKLIN is one of the stations best mechanics. ’Working and on the payroll of the East Side -West Side Welfare Center are: AUDREY EPPERSON, MARY WATSON, and LA MARA HINES, with latter two working diligently on the steadfast rising problems of poverty and blighted areas. With a left turn, the tour continues on Karachi Avenue. There the visitors discover this city ' s most renown industrial plants where JOHNNIE BROWN and WILSON JONES head the radio and electricity department. Working with the secretaries and quite proficient in her field is MISS GLORIA JONES and MISS BETTY McKEEVEK, EBM Technicians in the business department. The engineers for this plant are RICHARD GALES, CLYDE BAILEY, and JOHN RICHARDSON, and CORNELIUS HEDGINS, a prominent draftsman, is in charge and has his own department in this industrial plant. Situated on Oakland Drive, about three miles out of the heart of the city, we see Essen --Dortmund - Duisburg ' s most attractive sight, its newly built hospital, Hope Memorial, with a staff of over 200. Some familiar faces working at Hope Memorial Hospital are: DRS. VERA ABBOTT and LYNN WRIGHT, Head Psychologists, WILLIAM WYNN, X-Ray Technician; BARBARA EDWARDS, Head Physical Therapist; REV. MOSES STITH and REV. SHIRLEY SMITH, hospital chaplains; and DIANE FOY, Medical Secretary. The nursing staff consists of JACQUELINE PETERSON, nurse in charge of the children ' s ward. Work- ing with here are: CATHERINE RUFFIN, HIBERNIA PARHAM, LELLA MAYFIELD, and BEATRICE MANS ON. Not restricting their services to special wards are: BARBARA McCOY R. N. ; PATRICIA KiZZIE; MARY CHRIS TAIN; ERNESTINE JOHNSON R. N. ; BARBARA SMITH; BURMA DIAMOND R. N. ; DOROTHY PARKER R. N. ; CYNTHIA WALKER R. N. ; BARBARA WILLIAMS R. N. ; and BETTY BATTLE. Quite an efficient staff, wouldn ' t you agree? Now to continue the tour. As we head back to the main sections of the city we see Major General DONALD BRACKETT head Military Educator at the Army Academy with Majors WILLIAM SCOTT, WILLIE VAUGHAN, CARROLL AVERY and COLONEL GEORGE SMITH Assisting. Once we arrive in the city, we notice a great deal of conglomeration of people at the court house, only to later learn that three of the best known attorneys in the world JAMES JONES, MAXCINE CANNON, and JAMES THWEATT have been hired by the Multi-Millionaire, J. W. Van Hausen to defend him in a half million dollar law suit. On Vancover Avenue is situated one of the cities newest office buildings, The Smith Smith Certi- fied Public Accountants Firm. Persons working with this company are MR. JAMES SMITH and MISS PATRICIA SMITH. Now that the tour of the city is over and the reunion festivities are taking place, my job is over. As I head back to the airport many thoughts run through my mind. One I consider to be most important is Opportunities in the World of Work, and when I look back over the success of the class of 1964, it really makes me realize how important an education is. By Barbara Ford Diane Foy 69 MOMENTS Academically, as Peabody strives for heights of recognition and achievement, vital moments become commonplace. Motivated by a thirst for knowledge and mental cultivation, each student absorbs and expands . Often this imbibed education extends into the library or into extracurricular clubs . Students benefit in every department from special attention of well -trained inter- ested instructors . 70 TO REMEMBER 71 ■ • Calmest Charlene Jones -- Richard Dunn Most Musical Barbara Ford John Richardson Most Agreeable Vera Abbott -- George Branch WHO’S Biggest Flirt Barbara Thrower -- Leroy Hill Best Built Diane Foy -- James Jon es 72 Most Dependable Vera Abbott — Joseph Carey Class Sour-puss Shirley Williams -- Willis Madden Most Business-like Sandra Lowe --- James Smith Most Conservative Florence Turner -- Ernest Givens WHO Best Natured Dorothy Parker -- Stanley Ward 73 Most Sophisticated Brenda Ganey -- James Jones Most Likely to Succeed Florence Turner -- Cornelius Hudgins WHO’S Best Dancer Catherine Ruffin -- Jessie Randolph Best Athlete Joyce Robertson -- Cornelius Hudgins Class Pest Susan Smith -- Rudolph Bell Best Class Spirit Jean Harrison -- Wallace Williams Class Lovers Paulette Mayfield -- Johnnie Brown 74 Best Dressed Catherine Ruffin -- James Jones WHO Laziest Charlene Jones -- Richard Dunn Best Posture Eva Williams -- Joseph Massenburg Most Scatter-brained Susan Smith -- Albert Dawson Most Unconcerned Diane Foy -- Joseph Johnson AIDS T Most Studious Lynne Wright — Cornelius Hudgins Class Clam Virginia Hubbard -- Richard Gales 75 WHO’S Most Conceited Brenda Ganey David Thweatt Most Chicken-hearted Vivian Bland -- Rudolph Bell Most Handsome Cutest Jacquelin Peterson -- Willie Massenburg Most Changeable Shirley Williams -- Joseph Massenburg Most Punctual Vemonica Birckhead -- Moses Stith 76 Slowest Virginia Hubbard -- Richard Dunn WHO Most Artistic Priscilla McLeond -- Leroy Hill Class Cry-baby Lynne Wright -- Rudolph Bell Class Grinner Marjorie Dyson -- Clyde Bailey Class Clown Susan Smith -- Albert Dawson Most Dramatic Eva Williams -- Clyde Bailey Most Romantic Patricia Smith — John Richardson 77 Abbott, Vera Octavia Collegiate Yearbook Staff, Choir, Safety Patrol.
