THE ANNUAL STAFF PRESENTS THE PEABODIAN VOLUME XII! 1963 PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do, and what I ought to do, by the grace of God, I will do. 1 IN MEMORIAM Clyde Swanson Scott Mr. Clyde S. Scott, who was the fifth principal of Peabody High School, served from 1951 to 1961. He was a native of Clover, Virginia and a graduate of North Carolina A T Col- lege and Columbia University. Walter B. Tynes Mr. Walter B. Tynes served as an instructor in the Industrial Arts Department of Peabody High School from 1943 to 1962. He was a native of Roanoke, Virginia and attended Virginia State College where he received the B.S. and M. S. Degrees . ' O living will that shalt endure When all that seems shall suffer shock, Rise in the spiritual rock. Flow through our deeds and make them pure. That we may lift from out of dust A voice as unto him that hears A cry above the conquered years To one that with us works, and trust. With faith that comes of self-control, The truths that never can be proved Until we close with all we loved. And all we flow from, soul in soul. Alfred Tennyson FOREWORD ALMA MATES ¥- HZS. We are thrilled at the thought of the challenge the future holds, and we are eager to experience it, but we are a bit reluctant to depart from the familiar things. Faces and places, dear friends, and all that we revered, we shall leave. For, it is written that even this shall pass away, ” and we resolutely face the inevitable future that our sojourn here has prepared meet. Brown Chairman Mrs. Edith S. Allen Charles R. Are we ready? Naturally we evidenced many weak- nesses . . . we cannot say that this was the best class ever to be graduated from Peabody -- such judgement is beyond our limits . But we have accepted our challenge and exerted a definite drive forward -- each in his chosen realm. As freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and now seniors in this great school, we re- present a variety in po tential and a variety in fulfillment . It is left to each of us to make our own unique contribution to society. For what then would we be remembered? Strivers, doers, successes, failures . . . we would then be remembered as strivers . Eileen Redd Chaplain OH, SPIRIT FREE In our present day society it is increas- ingly important that one possess spirit and pride: spirit for what one does, and pride in what one accomplishes . As a thriving community and ambitious school, Petersburg residents and high school students approach their life and work with spirit and take genuine pride in their accomplishments. As young adults, our unbounded enthu- siasm and unconquerable spirit is demonstrated in various and diverse ways. Whether it be in the classroom, on the dance floor, in a money- raising drive, on the football field, in the bleachers, or in giving an election speech, we exhibit our vivacity, vigor, and willingness to participate and serve. The Peabody spirit is an effervescent sparkle that affects our life and our school. We display this spirit in our eager competition in the classroom, in athletics, in school and community functions . But like energy, this spirit must be harnessed and directed to the correct channels in order to be a useful, constructive force, one inspiring pride. We take pride in our growing community, its beauty, modern pace, and flourishing atmosphere. We enjoy doing our work well, improving not only our school and community, but also ourselves. We are proud of our accomplishments as a school, as individuals, and as a com- munity. Our pride in our achievements, whether scholastic honors, sports records, or citizenship awards, is evinced in recognition of such success. May these achievements be but step- ping stones to the realization of future and greater goals . INSPIRING PRIDE 28 Often our daily school work tends to become routine. However, our work can be less wearisome and more en- joyable if we approach it with the intent to do our best. The sense of satisfaction we derive from having done our best makes even the most menial tasks interesting and worth- while . As students of Peabody High School, known for its excellent college pre- paratory program, we are offered a wide range of subjects taught by over sixty well -qualified instructors. The subject content of our courses is cons- tantly being revised upward v ith new, advanced courses added to the school ' s curriculum as the need arises. We are proud of our work. We are proud of the increasing number of stu- dents enrolling in the advan ced colle- giate courses. We are proud of the stu- dents on the Honor Roll, of the many winners of academic contests, of the students who graduate with honors. We enjoy being challenged by our class work, which forces us to work to the best of our ability, putting forth our best efforts. We take pride in doing our work well. Clubs 42 CLASS HISTORY Nineteen Hundred-Sixty Three marks the end of five wonderful years here at Peabody High School. We leave now, taking with us memories that will last a lifetime. Most of us remember our first day at Peabody. We have to admit now that we were pretty shy and green, but we were anxious to begin our work. On our first day here, we were welcomed to the school by Mr. Charles Goode and in turn were assigned to various homerooms in which we were registered. As time gradually went by, we became acquainted with the traditions of high school. Many of us joined clubs and organizations, among them being the Library Club, Industrial Arts Club, Student Council, Majorette Squad, Latin Club, Polygon Club, Football Team, Basketball Team, and Track Team. It was during this year that a member of our class became Miss Peabody queen for 1959-60. She was Ellen Redd. During this year the football and basketball teams became undefeated VIA champions. Many of our boys contributed their efforts to make this possible during that year. As we entered our third year at Peabody, many more of us became active and participated in various clubs and organizations. Many of us had the chance to attend conferences and festivals. Joyce Houston won fourth place in the Elementary Algebra Quiz at the District Science and Mathematics Conference. During this year some students were qualified for induction into the Peabody Chapter of the National Honor Society. Those students were Eileen Redd, Rachel Phillips, hlary Gilliam, Joyce Houston, Yvonne Heath, and Constance Lee. Yvonne Taylor was the fourth runner up in the Miss Peabody contest. A session later, we were juniors. We entered our junior year with intense anticipation of the events to come. We organized the junior class with the following persons elected as officers; president, Alvin Bragg; vice-president, Mary Gilliam; secretary, Joyce Houston, assistant secretary, Diane Bracey, treas- urer, Constance Lee; chaplain. Ora Green; parliamentarian, Yvonne Heath; reporter, Nancy Thompson. After organizing, we selected our class rings and then began to prepare a program for Junior Day. We presented to the student body a program entitled Junior Bowl which was a program similar to the College Bowl presented on television. The time finally came in which we had to make preparations for the Junior-Senior Prom. We selected as our theme Rendevous of the Stars. When that night came, we can all say that we really enjoyed ourselves. During this year some of our students became noted in various contests, festivals, and conferences. Nancy Thompson was elected the president of the State I.C.T. (Industrial Co-operative Training); Walter Hill won first place in Public speaking in the State I.C.T. Convention; Yvonne Heath won third place in the Spelling Contest (I.C.T.). Laura Hendrick won third place in the District Science and Math ematics Conference in Intermediate Algebra; Yvonne Heath was elected vice-president of the Student Council. Constance Lee was the second runner-up in the Miss Peabody Contest. Next on the agenda was the appointment of the Yearbook Staff. After filling out applications the follow- ing persons were selected for the positions: Editor-in-Chief, Constance Lee; Associate Editor, Laura Hendrick; Copy Editor, Mary Gilliam; Photo Editor, Mary Morgan; Art Editor, Ronald Martin; Assistant, Gloria Branch; Business Manager, Diane Bracey; Assistant, Eileen Redd; Writers, Alice Bland, Lillian Curley, Yvonne Heath, Nadine Hinnant, Joyce Houston, Nancy Thompson, Walter Watson, Yvonne Tay- lor; Typists, Willie Mae Barber, Thomas Ann Braden, Carolyn Brown, Fannie Jones, Brenda McNear, Alice Stewart, and Dorothy Valentine. We finally reached our long awaited Senior Year. We organized the class with the following officers being elected: President, Walter Watson; Vice-president, Gilbert Griffin; Secretary, Constance Lee; Assistant Secretary, Joyce Houston; Treasurer, Ora Green; Chaplain, Eileen Redd. Diane Bracey became head majorette and Joseph Twyne became drum-major during this year. Three seniors were inducted into the Peabody Chapter of the National Honor Society. They were Alice Bland, Laura Hendrick, and Nadine Hinnant. Brenda Evans became president of the Student Council, and Mary Gilliam was second runner-up in the Miss Peabody contest. We have spent five wonderful years at Peabody, but like all wonderful things, they must end. We are facing this vast world, well prepared, and aware of the hardships that we are to endure. Filled with knowledge given to us by our teachers, and b ' our experiences here at Peabody, we are going to lift high the dignity of Peabody, bring out its culture, and the principles for which it stands. CLASS PROPHECY It has been the custom for one dear soul in the graduating class to take time out from his hectic courses to take a wonderous glance into the. future and find out just what some of his classmates and he will be doing in the future. This class is no ex- ception. We invite you to partake with us a gander at the future of some of our sen- iors. If the reading gets boring, you may re-enter the world of reality. And away we go! Let ' s skip along to the year 1967. We are visiting the high school in Des Moines. The attractive young lady is none other than Jacqueline Polk, the teacher -co-author of the current best seller THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUND EDUCATION. In gym class we see Mary Boone demonstrating the proper form used in the forward roll. Enough for that. Let ' s move on the year 1969 and see what ' s happening. Let ' s drop in Tiffany ' s. Who are those two couples seated at the table? The young ladies are the most talked about in Hollywood. They are Diane Bracey and Gloria Branch, both ac- claimed for their performances in DEVILISH DESIRE. The gentlemen are Alvin Bragg, politician and Walter Watson, lawyer, politician, and a democratic candidate for the senate in Massachusetts. Also, we see seated in the background Brenda Evans, noted columnist of the Herald Tribune. Joyce Walker, model, is over there showing off a new $26, 000 diamond ring. Let ' s move across country. In a few moments ithe Philharmonic will receive one of the greatest writers of all time. This is none other than the flambouyant Yvonne Tay- lor. Furnishing the music tonight is the famed San Frisco Philharmonic which features Brenda Lundy as flutist and is under the direction of Ronald Glass. Among the specta- tors tonight is Winston Bethel, a member of the Warriors. Also present tonight is Laura Hendrick, who is chief executive at the pentagon and is here at the expense of the governor, Walter Brown. The Brown ' s like to keep it in the family. We are now preparing to enter the new Mathematical and Science Genter in Los Angeles. The most famous mathematician there is Gonstance Lee. Her assistant is Mary Gilliam. They both own the Nobel Prize for Math. Professor Isaac Ridley is down the hall in his class tutoring his class on Probability. He says that his best stu- dent is John Pryor. We leave California and go to D.C. We are now in Cortez Peters School of Business. Some of the teachers are Sandra Greene, Willie Mae Barber, Alice Stewart, Brenda McNear, Thomas Ann Braden, Betty Hardy, Frances Goode, and Merle McKeever. Le t ' s move on to Blair Plospital in Rob, Texas. Lillian Curley and Patricia Reynolds, two well-known psychologists, combined recently to form a new method of helping their patients. Ann Friend, a modern day Clara Barton, is busy giving physi- cal therapy to one of her patients. Alice Bland, noted technician who prevented the sale of a deadly drug, IGMO, from being sold in America, is in Washington receiving her Nobel Prize for medicine . Some of the nurses on duty are Rosetta Edwards and Mildred Harville. Nadine Hinnant, a nurse also, is under consideration to become the private nurse of the president of the United States, Ted Kennedy. Let ' s go to General Motors in Detroit. Here we see some of the leading car makers discussing sales for the year. Charles Crews, Cadillac; Thomas Williams, Chevrolet; and Raymond Pegram, Pontiac. Now let ' s just look across country. Ohio -- Zelma Thompson, foremost interior decorator. New York -- Gail Roberts and Rovenia Daniel, noted dressmakers. Joyce Houston, newly appointed head of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is in Washington to discuss with the president of the United States some medical details . We are expecting these various scenes now to ramble into Green Bay, Wisconsin. We first come upon the Cleveland Johnson Brokerage Office. Next we run into Helen Roach ' s Beauty Salon. We come next to the law office of Stanley Jones, noted attorney. He is busy consulting with his secretary, Dorothy Valentine and his bookkeeper, Doreatha King . Up ahead is the Alloy Chemical Co . , owned by Samuel Putney, George Foreman, and Edward Dance. Eileen Redd, noted interior decorator, has set up a shop. Over there is the Morgan Musical Institute, owned by Mary Morgan. Yvonne Heath is the private secretary to J. Paul Getty. We now enter the hospital to find dieti- cian John Hayes giving a lecture on the diet for growing babies . On the corner is one in a chain of service stations belong to James Winfield. Next we ramble on up to Packer Stadium to watch two linemen work out side by side. They are Bossie Bonner, tackle, and Roderick Warren, guard. A guy can dream, can ' t he? Walter Watson, Reporter CLASS SONG (Tune of Exodus) Farewell, farewell, it ' s time to say goodbye But we will always cherish thee. Our hearts are filled with grief And silently we weep Knowing Peabody that we must say goodbye. Farewell, farewell, though we may wander far Close to our hearts you ' ll always be. To parents, teachers, friends Who helped us to the end Lovingly we all should like to say thank you. Farewell, farewell, it ' s time to say goodbye But we will always cherish t hee. Our hearts are filled with grief And silently we weep Knowing Peabody that we must say goodbye. FLOWER; Green Carnation To the ‘faithful teachers we give our thanks for the promising start they ' ve given us. We ' ve traveled far along the way. And yet we ' ve just begun. As we bid our school goodbye, We, the seniors, leave with thee. Fair Peabody, Honor and Thanks. Lillian Curley MOTTO: The door of success lies open, let us walk in. Although now you are graduates, you can do a great service for the rest of us, if you never cease to be students--looking for opportunities and ways to cherish the American system of free enterprise and to improve the American way of life. You can be thankful for free schools in a country where you are free to worship and work and think and talk as you please. This is your heritage from the people who built America. The future is pretty largely in your hands— you must be vigilent and active to combat the evils of socialism, government domination of private in- dustry, and all the isms that destroy democracy.
