if VI J jBr Ami 1 ? MB] Hi iff fnjggf 1 |i Tmm ■ i fl I k. xitfA The Annual Staff Presents The Peabody in Petersburg Petersburg, Virginia is one of the older cities of English Amer- ica . It embraces the site and memory of the most important fort on the Virginia frontier of the mid-seventeenth century. It became a town when towns were few in colonial Virginia . Similarly, the town became a manufacturing and transportation center when such centers were exceptions on the southern scene. Petersburg was a military objective and a battleground in two major wars. Certain aspects of its social and economic history are important to state and national history. Some of the residents of Petersburg have been persons of importance in history, and many of the foremost figures in American history have appeared, in one role or another, on the stage of Petersburg history. Later came the years of change in Petersburg in government and education. Previous to the Civil War, education in Petersburg was looked upon as a private matter and as a result, many ex- cellent private schools for white children and a few for Negroes came into being. In 1868 it was felt by the members of the first school board that no high school was needed for the Negroes, but the board ' s minutes mention four elementary schools for Negroes which were established. The council appropriated funds for the operation of these schools, but these were supplemented by funds provided by General Brown, Superintendent of Freedman ' s Bureau. Another source was the Peabody Fund and a contribution came from a lady resident of New York who wished to pay the salary of one teacher in the Negro schools . Then in this gleaming highlight of the history of Petersburg, a high school for Negroes, called Peabody High School was built in 1874 on the site of the present Bolling Junior High School on West Fillmore Street. Later a new building on Jones Street was erected and occupied and in 1951 the present building on the corner of Wesley and Jones Streets was completed at a cost of approximately $900, 000. This school is the oldest known public school for Negroes. Thus in the history of Petersburg stands a school that we all are very proud of. As seniors leaving this great school we have accomplished and experienced much in our five year stay. Jean Randolph Researcher 2 Foreword “Our aspirations are as trees — tall and stately” With the passage of years, you may look upon this school year as the time when the darkness of ignorance suddenly became bright with the gleam of knowledge . To preserve a record of these moments and the countless other experiences of you and your classmates, this annual strives to capture the eyes and mind of the scholarship, the leadership, the activities, and the character of Peabody High School. Dedication For being so understanding in helping us with our problems and for being a true friend and administrator to us during our glorious years of high school, we, the class of 1962, dedicate this edition of the Lion” to MR. I was guided in this capacity by the following tenet: A yearbook is a catalogue of events designed to reflect the high school career of the current senior class. This yearbook is a pictorial history of life around Peabody and is presented as a monument of the achievements of the ”62 class . I sincerely hope that the 1962 Lion achieves that goal. LAWRENCE MASON, JR. Adviser MRS. DOLORES W. HALEY Sponsor 6 MRS. VIVIAN H. WEST Sponosr LEWIS TURNER Photo Editor As editor of the 1962 edition of the Lion, I have tried to project the various activities and the divisions of our school. I have tried to bring to the attention of the students, parents, and friends the true spirit that prevails at Peabody, and to renew this spirit wherever it might be waning. I sincerely hope that this yearbook will be proof of the undying spirit and loyalty in the class of 62. You have achieved a most significant goal, and we are proud of your success. We believe sincerely that you will go on to many more significant accom- plishments . It is my hope that in the long years ahead you will find much happiness and that you will always be satisfied in the knowledge that Peabody has every confidence in your ability to reach the goals for which you aspire. Again, my Congratulations and best wishes! ELMORE E. RAINEY Principal 10 You have finally achieved the goal that you have been pursuing for the past five years . However, this accomplishment is to serve only as a stepping stone to greater achievements on your stairway of life. I am hopeful that you will be successful in your endeavors whatever they may be and that your formal training at Peabody has prepared you to meet the many challenges that lie ahead. JESSIE C. WILLIAMS Assistant Principal 11 Congratulations to the fine class of 1962 for having reached another rung on the academic ladder of success. Because of the very active leadership roles which many of you have played in the life of Peabody, we feel proud of you and the possibilities for your future. Some of you have indicated potentiality for achiev- ing great things in life. Through continued prepara- tion designed to enable you to meet the challenges of the future, you will be given opportunity to demon- strate the real worth of your high school training received at Peabody under our direction. Others of you, perhaps not preferring leadership roles, have demonstrated a splendid sense of loyalty and cooperation to your leaders. Regardless of your roles in areas of scholarship or extra-curricular activities, there will come opportunities for you to reflect creditably on yourselves and on Peabody. By your continued loyalty to the school, by your insistence of develop- ing and maintaining high principles of living, and by your making your influence for good felt in every movement of social, religious, economic, and civic significance in your community, you will contribute immeasurably to the proud name of your alma mater, Peabody High School. May the few things said here be ever memorable in the hearts and minds of this graduating class and may they be stepping stones to greater things in life. The eighth grade was one of the most exciting and hectic periods of our young lives. Many of the students, in an effort to become true Peabodians, in every sense of the word, become a part of various activities throughout the school. In the 9th grade many changes took place in our school lives. Our classes gave us much concern at first but we finally found ourselves progressing. We participated in many activities and excelled in some, but our greatest ordeal was to try to live down the idea of being a freshman. We are getting off the plane in Successville, which is the beatnik name for Happy Land.” As we enlighted, I noticed Joel Wallace who was also on the plane. I asked him if he knew any good night spots, and he laughted and said, I own night clubs all over the world; and right, now I am on my way to check on one of my businesses here in Successville. Well, what are we waiting for, lets go! As we approach the new night club, we see Connie Bryant, Carl Edwards and William King doing the electrical work and putting up the new neon sign readi ng, Merton Williams, Disc jockey, and John Bailey on drums. The great success of the club is credited to the music composer Colbert Gales. After eating dinner, we were on our way to the largest hotel in Successville, which was designed by Gayle Carter and exclusively decorated by Patricia Mitchell and Walter Moore, when we saw two photographers Harold Hollaway and Fletcher Blackwell, who rushed by to snap a picture of the champion boxer, Benjamin Fields. On the next day as we were touring the city, one of our constituents was suddenly attacked by a strange illness. He was rushed to die general hospital where a corp of doctors and nurses were trying to diagnose his case. They called in the medical technician, Dora Perry and the X-ray technician Janet Wyatt. Among the corps of doctors and nurses were Gloria Carey, Marion Wilson, Mildred Wilson, William Carter, Leroy Jones and George Crittenden. As we entered the industrial section of the city, we noticed the large engineering plant owned and operated by the agricultural engineer, Charles Mitchell. His staff consisted of the electronic engineers Joseph Richardson, Thomas Price, Floyd Peebles, and Mar vino Hill. The civil engineers were Betty Mitchell, Samuel Madden, James Sidney, Paul Robertson, and Kenneth Williams, and the mechanical engineers were John Brooks and Daniel Gilliam. The secretaries of the various engineers were Priscilla Jones, Margie Johnson, Catherine Parham, Authuxette Miller, Edith Morton, Bertha Perkins, Ann Pierce, Jean Taylor, Barbara McCray and Ernestine Williams. We passed the city library where Ruth Morgan is the librarian. There was a teachers ' conference in session. Attending this convention were the following high school teachers of history: Virginia Mann, Teresa Ward, Ernest Brooks, Leroy Edmonds, John Lee, and Earl Parham; of elementary education: Annie Byrd, Barbara Me Kenney, Arnita Minter, Yvonne Richardson, Thelma Young, James Byrd, and Marion Jones; of physical education: Viola Crews, Delores Smith and Margaret Walker, and a Spanish interpeter Deborah Stewart. The college in Successville is located about two blocks from the library. As we approached the college, I could see the new domintory that was being built for the freshman boys. I was told that the plans for the building had been drafted by Joseph Baskerville. As I came closer to the building, I saw John E. Jones laying bricks. The building is to be completed by September of 1976. I went into the main office and there sat Courtney Powell, who is a music teacher at the college. She was having a discussion with the band instructor Maggie Phillips, They told me that a concert was to be held at the college at 6:00 p.m. featuring Gloria Berry and William Lee. After the concert, Joel reminded me that there was a lot more of Successville to see. This time he took me to the shopping center that had been recently rebuilt. We went into a large department store where I purchased some suits. However, they had to be altered by the seamstresses in the store, who were Otelia Blackwell, Mary Green, Annette Kates, and Rose Wyatt. One of the suits had been tailor made by Richard Jackson. While looking around the store, I noticed two ladies in wave uniforms looking at sale prices, and to my surprise, they were Vandelia Kelly and Josephine Redd, two of my classmates. As I engaged, in a conversation with them I found out that Melvin Clarke had become a naval officer and Robert Clarke enlisted in the army. By this time, my packages were wrapped and I said goody-by, and left. Also located in the business section was a medical arts building. I went into the building and looked around. I was surprised to see all the different branches of sciences on the directory. But as I read on, I concluded that the building also had a section for the city clinic, On the list were three excellent pediatricians, Virginia Fultz, Paulette Jones and Fannie Riley, all who had received their M.D. s. The occupational therapist was Brenda Gatlin and the physical therapist was Lewis Turner. As I read on, the names became more familiar. There were my old friends Jean Randolph, a child psychologist, Ernestine Tomes, a physiologist, William Jones, a physical geographist, Doris Graves, a clinical psychologist, Linwood Neverson and Fred Roy all, psychiatrists, and Sadie Chavis, Zealia Greene, Sandra Johnson, Cornelia Owens, and Paul Robertson were all successful sociologists. I was so enthusiastic about all my friends ' success in Successville, that I forgot about visiting the Thweatt Missile Plant, which was named for the nuclear physicist, James Thweatt. However, I heard that the electronic technician was Clarence Hite and the electrical technician, Kenneth Manson. On the next day, I was sorry I had to leave for home because I had not had enough: time to visit the entire city of Successville. On the way to the airport we passed a beautiful Kingdom Hall of Jehovah ' s Witnesses, where Juanita Smith is a missionary. Just around the corner from the Kingdom Hall was a large building. I asked Joel what the building was used for, and he said it was a building for mechanics. He said he didn ' t know much about the type of work they did, but the. mechanics were Robert Chieves, Walter Edwards, Rockwell Hargraves, Charles Dickens, Thomas Tucker and Lawrence Reed. Upstairs in the building were three I. B. M. operators, Victoria Livingston, Jewel Manson, and Ruby Jones, and two accountants, Gloria Brown and Iris Smith. • As we went into the lobby of the airport, we heard the announcement that our plane was in need of repairs and that the aviation mechanics John F. Jones and Richard Howard were working very hard to find the trouble. As we sat down to wait for the plane to be repaired, I noticed Doris Richardson and Paul Berry getting off another plane, returning to their work in Successville. As we left the ground, I looked back happily at the small city of Successville where the class of 1962 had successfully accomplished their goals. Indeed a job well done.
