Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1961 volume:

The Peabody High School Annual Staff Presents The Lion MCMLXl In grateful recognition of her unselfish devotion to our interests, we the senior class of MCMLXI, dedicate this year- book to our beloved and understanding sponsor, Mrs, Vivian W. McGee. If, in the years to come, we succeed in accomplishing that which is good in the eyes of our fellowmen, much of the credit will be due to her constant, patient, and wise guidance during our most impressionable years. 2 Foreword We, the members of the class of MCMLXI, have looked forward to this momentous occasion since our enrollment in Peabody High School. During our abode here, we have increased our educational status tremendously. The education rendered, along with the extra-curricular activities, has enabled us to reach a certain goal“-to become well-rounded individuals. We have achieved, this goal only through the unselfish devotion of first, our parents; second, our teachers; and third, our friends. In this Lion of MCMLXI, we enliven with great honor memorable events that we have encountered throughout our venture at Peabody. We convey many ideas: those of the past which have gone; the present which is here; and the future which has yet to come. CLASS FLOWER Red Carnation CLASS POEM We’ve stmggled here for five long years And now it ' s time to part; But we will always keep with us, Sweet memories from the start. We ' ve learned the lesson here required. But we will never stop; We’ll keep on climbing higher. Until we reach the top. Dear teachers, you ' re a jewel to us. We’ll place you in our hearts; And though we say farewell to you. Out thoughts will never part. We ' ll follow in your footsteps. Because we know you’re right; For we will always try to be The brightest of the bright. Dear schoolmates, since we now must go, We put our trust in you; Our treasured things are in your care. We hope you will be true. We know that we will miss you. This will be often said; But friends, we ' re sure you understand. Our future lies ahead. To reach our goal we cannot stop, Onward we must go; We cannot stand and look around. Nor wander to and fro. And now, dear Peabody, we must go. The teardrops fill our eyes; The time has come and now we say Our last and sad good-byes. - Clyde Pulliam - 34 Class History We, the Senior Class of MCMLXI, have spent five wonderful years here at Peabody High School. Now the time has approached for us to leave, taking with us memories which will last a lifetime. Most of us remember our first day in Peabody High. Some of the boys of our class, although young and inexperienced, participated in sp orts. George Belser and Samuel Batts made the football team; Samuel Batts joined the basketball team. Vernetta Cox was crowned Miss Homecoming. Norma Bullock, and Marilyn Williams were invited into the Honor Society. Roy Washington and Tyrone Bailey be- came Safety Patrols. Wylma Turner became a majorette. Our classmates on the Cheering Squad were: Shirley Williams, Dorothy Shands, and Ruby Parham. We elected George Winfield as our president; Marilyn Williams, Vice-president; Norma Bullock, secretary; Jocelyn Jarrett, assistant secretary; Joseph Backus, treasurer; Clarence Wright, chaplain. Then we began to play for the Junior-Senior Prom. We took as our theme Moonlight and Roses. Much time and effort was put into the decorating of the gymnasium for the Prom. As the night drew nearer, the tension and excitement mounted. Finally, the night arrived and many dreams were fulfilled. We danced and danced, but to our disappointment it had to come to an end. There were other Junior activities also. On Junior Class Day, we presented to the student body a program entitled To Tell the Truth. We also ordered and received our class rings. Christine Fields, George Winfield, Marion Turner, Louise Kershaw, Ann Wilson and Joseph Backus were invited to join the National Honor Society. Students who joined the Latin Club were: Wylma Turner, Frances Booker, Royal Nickens, Brenda Horton, Carolyn Bymes, Robert Harris, Jacquelyn Merriweather, Henry Rhone, George Winfield and Ann Wilson. The Modern Dance Group consisted of three new members: Wylma Turner, Dorothy Shands, and Carolyn Robinson. Frances Booker, Jacquelyn Merriweather, and Christine Fields joined the N.H.A. Carolyn Byrnes, Dorothy Lewis, Carolyn Malloy and Carolyn Bennette joined the F.B.L.A. Students who joined the Art Club were: Carolyn Bennett, Ruby Parham, Wylma Turner, Leslie Howard, George Robertson, Vernetta Cox, Viola Davis and Ora Ann Dowl. Next of our many activities was the appointment of the Yearbook Staff. Students who were interested in working on the staff submitted an application blank to Mrs. V. W. McGee, sponsor. From the many applications, the following stu- dents were chosen: editor-in-chief, Joseph Backus; copy editor, Louise Kershaw; art editor, Clarence Bell; assistants, Raymond Carey, Viola Davis, and Leslie Howard; photo editor, George Winfield; assistants, Clarence Wright, James Baker, Wylma Turner; business manager, Clyde Pulliam; assistants Jocelyn Jarratt and Douglas McLaughlin; writers, Ann Wilson, Marian Turner, and Carolyn Malloy; and Typists, Ruby Parham, Shirley Williams, Vernetta Cox, and Robert Harris. Triumphantly we entered our senior year. We had been looking forward to this day since we entered Peabody High. Naturally our senior year has been our busiest. We organized our Senior Class by electing the following officers: Margaret Hill, President; Joseph Backus, Vice President; Shirley Williams, Secretary; Ann Wilson, Assistant Secretary; Wylma Turner, Treasurer; Clarence Wright, Chaplain; and Louise Kershaw, Reporter. Next on our agenda was Senior Day. We worked very hard to prepare a program that would be representative of our Senior Class. We decided on a Talent Hunt. There were many kinds of talent displayed. We felt that this program was enjoyed by everyone. Louise Kershaw made us very proud by becoming the first mnner-up to Miss Homecoming. We gave her our whole- hearted support, and we were proud of the results. Senior year means preparation for college the following year. We were busy filing applications for colleges. There were scholarship tests offered to us, many of us took advantage of these tests. The Junior-Senior Prom was given by the Juniors this year, and like our predecessors we only had to enjoy ourselves. Now the time has come for us to depart, our hearts are filled with sadness but the memories of our dear Peabody High will always live in our hearts. 35 Class Prophecy Place Utopia Time . . . 1975 As my eyes peer wonderously into the scope of prognostication, my thoughts become overwhelmed with professed inspiration. My mind becomes so completely infatuated with my world of imagination that I find myself falling, falling, falling into a deep slumber. As my eyes open now, I realize that 1 am no longer in the present world, but I am now in the land of Utopia, fourteen years later. As my head clears and my vision becomes clearer, I see many of my old beloved classmates, whom I have not seen since graduation ' 61. Staring numbly, and wishing hopefully for the power to speech, Deloris Crenshaw comes over and welcomes me to this never, never wonderland of dreams. I learn from her that she is to be my guide through the high spots of this ideal perfection. Our first place of visit takes us to the most important place here, the Embassy of the Ambassador, the Honorable Willie Hender- son. Here, I also see one of the top political figures of the day, namely, Mr. Roy Washington. On my way out, I just happen to see two very efficient secretaries, busily manipulating their skills behind a typewriter, who are Ruby Parham and Carolyn Robin- son. They asserted to me in no uncertain terms that they were only private secretaries by day; by night, however, they were private and very efficient entertainers. Our next visit carries us to the most elaborate school that I have ever seen. I later found out that it was designed by two of Utopia ' s finest architects, Raymond Carey and Clarence Wright. This school has one of the highest -rating faculties anywhere around. Why just about the entire faculty include Deloris Archer, Music; James Goodwyn, History; Carolyn Malloy, English; Lois Powell, Social Studies; Dorothy Shands, Business Education; Marion Turner, Mathematics; and Jocelyn Jarratt, Sociology. Now don ' t get me wrong when 1 say, Phd. Degrees, because actually, each of them did receive this degree upon graduation from Central State Hospital. The Utopian Hospital, my next stop, seems to be very modern with all of the needed facilities. About the only thing needed at this hospital is patients; however, Utopia being such a perfect place, there is no need for sickness. I must say though that a better staff could not be found anywhere. Included in this staff are such well-known physicians, nurses, technicians, etc. as Frances Booker, Carolyn Byrnes, Yvonne Cruz, Willia Mae Draughn, Christian Fields, Vivian Fields, Willette Fitzgerald, Sandra Hailes, Joyce Hudgins, and Mary Marcus, also Jacqueline Merriweather, Barbara Williams, Edgar Farley, Arthur Morris, and Royal Nickens. As I ' ve stated before, here in this perfect world there are no sicknesses, so the only way that these unneeded maniacs can exercise their skills is to work on each other. My excursion seems to become more and more interesting with everyone I meet here. Speaking of meetings, I, at this time met Theodore Richardson, a journalist of the Times, who had been sent to interview me . Having had my picture taken by that excellent artist and photographer, Leslie Howard, who now owns and operates the Pierre A ' Mount Studio, we found ourselves being guided in the direction of the Science Building, where I see several madcaps busily studying and tearing things apart. I recognize some of these people to be Charles Bethel, a political science major; William Johnson, a horticulturist; William Reed, a chemist; and Peggy Patton and Albert Simmons, both psycologists. At this point, I see Richard Edwards coming toward us. Richard, you know, is a jazz disc jockey of Utopian Bandstand, and he has invited me to sit in on one of the sessions. Now lunch, and there seems no better place for lunch than the fabulous dining room of Madam Dowlere ' s, alias Ora Ann Dowl, modeling agency. As I am escorted through the building by Madam Dowlere, after having eaten lunch, I see one of her top models, Joyce Brown and her famous name fashion designer, Dorothy Lewis. Saying good-bye now and leaving, I notice across the street a large business firm. Following my instinct, we walk across the street to the firm and go in. Once inside, I find myself completely surrounded by old friends. I see that Robert Harris and Clyde Pulliam have become Certified Public Accountants and Joyce Dillard, Barbara Fields, Louise Kershaw, Joan Boisseau, and Carolyn Bennett have each become stenographers. I might add that Joyce Dillard ' s loud mouth has gotten her the position of top stenog- rapher. I learn however, that Louise Kershaw was voted last year ' s Most Valuable Worker. Seeing the name of Willis Brown on an office door, made me stop, and being guided by my curiosity, I open the door and walk in. Surely enough it is the Willis Brown that I know. I learn from him and am indeed very glad to know that he is now an automobile designer for General Motors Corporation here. When Willis and 1 finished chatting about this and that and that and this, I decided to visit some of the other offices. I didn ' t get very far when, my gosh! whom do you suppose I met. At first my eyes seem to be playing tricks on me, but no, there she is, all 300 pounds of her, Brenda Horton. She maintains to me that after having gone to la school and all that, she is now holding the seat or maybe seats, in the Senate. It is truly wonderful to see how so many have taken their places well in society. Outside once again, I now see two familiar faces peering through the crowd. They are Norma Bullock, a mathematician at a local university, and Oriette Walker, an elementary education teacher at one of the many elementary schools here. I infer from Norma that she is leaving soon on a visit to the Moon where she will do some research work in the field of mathematics. I also see George Winfield among the crowd. George invites me to visit the Master Minds Engineering and Technical Building of which he is head boss and he is also known as the Master Mind. Arriving here now I am surprised to see so many famous faces of so many people who have now become associated in society with this great organization. I see Joseph Backus, George ' s assistant, John Thomas, Donald Warren, and Jeffrey Overton, all top engineers; and Charlie Blunt, William Davis, and Douglas McLaughlin, ail expert technicians. Clarence Bell, a broadcast technician, is affiliated with a company on the Moon. Since my visit here, I ' ve learned that the people here are great sports lovers, and who could amust them more than those famous professional athletes whom we so cheered to victory in high school, namely, Rudy Lyons, Charles Davis, Samuel Batts, George Belser, and Edward Robertson. The athletic events could not be broadcast so well if it were not for that noted sports commentator, Henry Rhone, once a famous athlete also, so he says. With such good mechanics as Charles Williams and William Weaver; such top electricians as Tyrone Bailey and Willie Walker; and such expert carpenters as Charles Dillard and Robert Robertson, one can be assured of perfect maintenance, electrification and carpentry here. Well night is drawing nigh, and my imaginative whirl will soon end, but at the present, I must make the most of my visit. With tickets in our hands, Deloris and 1 set our course toward Ann ' s Dream House, and exclusive theater, where Paul Jones latest hit movie entitled Take Me Away From Butch, starring that sensational movie queen Miss Margaret Hill, is now being shown. Co-starring with Miss Hill will be that handsome star, Albert Smith, playing the role of Butch. This play could not be presented had it not been for the following persons: Janis Birchett, make-up artist; Sydna Greene and Gloria Minter, hair stylists; Marilyn Williams, costume designer; Mary Batts, screenplay; Charles Walker, director; John Starkes, producer; Gibson Davis, photoplay. Arriving now at the theater I see several service men and women who have come to view the great play. Among them I see Wylma Jeanne Turner, who is now a pilot and as I understand, she will soon attempt her first solo flight around the world. I also see Viola Davis, an armed forces nurse; Oliver Powell, a Navy Commander; Albert Nunnally, Raymond Viverette, and Byer Yam, all Air Force Commandants. Following the play which proved to be a success, all of the members of the Class of ' 61 decided to assemble at Ella ' s Club, owned and operated by Ella Thomas, for a class reunion. The guest artists entertaining us are none other than that great star of television, Stephen Griffin, and that famous exotic dance team of Vernetta Cox and Shirley Williams. After the entertainment and the usual hugging, kissing, crying and sighing which usually accompanies a reunion, we ended it all by singing our Alma Mater, after which the Rev. James L. Baker, rendered the benediction. Again, I am falling, falling, falling, only this time, out of an imaginative state into the state of reality where nothing here has changed. Here now, we can not fulfill our aims by dreams, we can only work hard and strive for them. Whether we do ful- fill our ambitions, our aims, our goals, or whether we fail, we can truly say that we have crossed one milestone in our lives, the others are yet to come.
