Though we drift far and wide Midst sounds ever ringing, We’ll hear familiar voices The Alma Mater ever singing, Hail Peabody High! One day the bells will ring loudly, And call us all back home, We ' ll come back rejoicing, proudly, Peabody High . . . Our home, sweet home! Ella Mae Hatchett Class Flower RED CARNATION Class Colors RED WHITE Class Poem O, PEABODY HIGH Here is our Alma Mater! the mistress of fortitude, Standing majestically as a symbol of inspiration, Built upon a solid foundation of unshakable existence, Known for her valuable training to the many who have passed through her doors. To thee, O, Peabody High, we the class of 1960 offer a salute For the happy memories of the worth-while hours spent within thy sacred and treasured walls. And for the firm determination given us to see and conquer all. Peabody, though we shall wander far from thy mighty portals, Though we shall take our places in a world of suffering and strife Though we shall go far and wide in search of lasting success, With our youth, our joys, and all that we have within our bodies and souls We dedicate ourselves to the joyous tasks of carrying aloft thy banner O, Peabody High Robert Lewis 29 Class History Let us turn back the hands of time to September, 1955 when one hundred and fifty eighth graders, bustling with excitement, entered the doors of Peabody High School to begin five years of hard study. After being assigned a homeroom and classes, we set out to make ourselves a real part of Peabody by joining various clubs and organiza- tions. The following class members joined the J. E. Shields Science Club: Barbara Bailey, Jacqueline Cephas, Patricia Cooley, Jerome Batts, Shirley Boone, Shirley Bugg, Jacqueline Davis, Lucinda Davis, Joyce Fuller, Alma Glover, Alma Grayson, Ella Hatchette, Carolyn Howard, Shirley Johnson, Florence Jones, Gloria Jones, Natalie Jones, James Mayfield, Joann McDaniel, Katherine Minter, Cecelia Morris, Wilmar Parham, Raymond Pegram, Catherine Phelps, Mary Porter, Patricia Robertson, Elmyra Rogers, Judith Rowlette, Effie Smith, John Sturdivant, William Scott, Esther Turner, Barbara Walker and Ruth Royall. Marjorie Williams, Germaine Williams, Janet Turner, Alice Robinson, Constance Jones, Carolyn Howard, and Jacqueline Davis were initiated into the N.H.A. Cynthia Bailey, Jacqueline Cephas, Ruth Royall, Ella Hatchette, Patricia Hill, Carrie Phillips, Amanda Robinson and Alice Robinson joined the Dramatics Club. Germaine Williams, Alice Robinson, Amette Heath and Ella Hatchette served in the Jr. Red Cross. A dance group was formed during this year with the following classmates being selected to participate: Barbara Walker, Ruth Royall, Catherine Phelps, Shirley Parham, Natalie Jones and Ella Hatchette. Patricia Robertson, Natalie Jones, Barbara Perry, Florence Jones, Constance Jones, Ann Jackson, Patricia Hill, Arnette Heath, Ruth Royall, Alma Grayson, Bertha Edwards, and Roberta Crump became members of the Pep Club. Several members of the class became affiliated with other clubs such as the Industrial Arts Club, Projection Crew, Band and Choir. Wilbert Johnson joined the baseball team; Eddie Parham, the football team and Eddie ' s brother, Leroy, led the band as drum major. James Mayfield was elected chaplain of the Student Council. Raymond Bailey, Simon Dickerson, Ann Jackson, Joann McDaniel, Paulette Phillips and James Starkes represented their respective homerooms on the council. We, too, became organized as a class, and William Scott was elected class president; Ruth Mitchell, Vice President; James Mayfield, Secretary; Carolyn Howard, Assistant Secretary; Jacqueline Cephas, Treasurer and Barbara Walker, Chaplain. The hands of time ticked away very rapidly, and before we realized it, the class of ' 60 had completed with reasonable success, its first year at Peabody High School. The next fall we really felt like old timers as we began again with the same enthusiasm which marked our first year. After being assigned to our class and settling down to studying, many of us found time to participate in extra-curricular activities. These included the Modern Dance Group, Choir, Math Club, Industrial Arts Club, Band and a host of others, Shirley Bugg became a majorette; Bertha Edwards, Ann Jackson, Natalie Jones, and Ruth Royall became Cheerleaders. Horace Brooks, Samuel F. Parham, Wilmar Parham, Samuel I. Parham and Eddie Parham participated in some of the varsity sports. Ronald Mickens won first place in elementary algebra at the State Science and Mathematics Conference. By the time we entered our third year at Peabody, we were well a part of many phases of the school. We all had to study much harder because the courses we were now taking were much more difficult. However, many of us joined clubs and participated in many conferences and festivals. 30 Catherine Phelps, Barbara Perry, and Yvonne Greene joined the cheering squad and Joann McDaniel and Arline Hill became majorettes. We were very proud of our many classmates who participated in Varsity Sports. Judith Rowlette was elected Secretary of the Student Council and James Starkes, Ruth Royall, Katherine Minter, Jeffery Overton and Germaine Williams were our Council Representatives. Our Junior year started off with a bang as we all came back to school very much excited because we were now officially considered upper classmen! ! Boy, how the hands of time did fly around this year: First came the or- ganization of our class at which time Ruth Royall was elected President; Florence Jones, Vice President; Carolyn Howard, Secretary; Gloria Jones, Chaplain. Next on the agenda was Junior Day at which time we presented our- selves to the school as a class. For this program we had a very interesting panel discussion with the parents of three of our classmates. Finally came preparations for that night of nights, theJunior-Senior Prom. The class chose Mardi Gras as the theme and immediately set out to find the best way to bring out this theme. In between all the plan- ning and excitement over the prom and rings, we still were very active in many organizations. Bertha Edwards and Catherine Phelps became Captain and Co-Captain, respectively, of the Cheering Squad and Joann McDaniel be- came Head Majorette. Many of our classmates were outstanding in the Band and Ruth Royall became Vice-Presi- dent of the Student Council. We were always proud of the boys on the Varsity Teams. At last the night of the prom arrived and we were all proud of the job we had done to make it more enjoyable for all who attended. At last the hands of time reached the zero hour; we were now Seniors. This year was to prove to be the most difficult and most exciting of our high school career. In our organizational meeting, Raymond Pegram was elected class president. The other officers are Alfred Lundy, Vice-President; Amanda Robinson, Secretary; William Scott, Assistant Secretary; Natalie Jones, Treasurer; and Carolyn Howard, Chaplain. After we became organized, a yearbook staff was selected. The editors were: Editor-in-Chief, Ruth Royall; Business Manager, Raymond Pegram; Copy Editor, Jacqueline Cephas; Art and Layout Editor, Ann Jackson; and Photographic Editor, Jerome Batts. With the help of writers, typists, proofreaders, photographers and our sponsors, Mrs. McGee and Miss Garnette, worked very diligently to produce one of the best yearbooks ever to come out of Peabody. Next on the agenda was the senior class play. The play we selected was Room for the Groom. The following persons took part in the play. James Mayfield, Modesteen Jenkins, Ann Jackson, Leonard Walker, Roy Briggs, Raymond Wynn, Ruth Royall, Ella Hatchette, Carolyn Howard, Jerome Batts, Catherine Lewis, Amanda Robinson, Patricia Hill and Gloria Jones. During this year, we were indeed proud of our football team which marched its way to the 1959 V.I.A. Cham- pionship. Many fellow classmates were on the team, Edward Parham, Wilmar Parham and Samuel I. Parham. Sam was the leading scorer on the team this year. The class then began to work hard to make our Senior Day a success. We presented an assembly program at which time several of our classmates presented their talent. John Taylor, a student at Virginia State College was our guest artist. At the close of the program our hearts were filled with warm memories of this important event. As the fleeting precious hours of this long-awaited Senior day passed, a new and cherished memory was realized by the proud seniors of Peabody High. 31 Class Will I, Barbara Bailey, will my legs to Carolyn Lee provided that she will not reduce them. As the haze clears, my weary eyes fall upon a large, modernistic airport where actress Joann McDaniel steps down upon the smooth velvety carpet. There she is greeted by a swinging combo, The Moon Rockettes, with players Raymond Pegram, Patricia Hill, Amanda Robinson and Ann Jackson, who played an old familiar tune, Carry Me Back to Old Peabody. I smile and say, That ' s good. Moving to my left and shielding the glowing star rays, I see a bright sign that reads, Way Out Place Hotel. The door opens slowly. At the desk is seated manager, Leonard Walker, a very businesslike man. At present, he is busy engaging in sleep. The hotel remains peaceful. I smile and say, That ' s good. There is a loud knocking beneath and familiar voices are heard. A small court room is now in view. Attorney Wilmar Parham defends his client, Edward Bracey, who brings to court Prince Massenburg for attempting to push him off the moon. Judge Jerome Smith declared that this is no case for court, but a perfect case for psychiatrist Robert Lewis. I smile and say, That ' s good. The mist below blots out the scene; b ut it is not really the mist that causes the haziness; it ' s an explosion from the scientific laboratory in which Ronald Mickens and Robert Long are in charge. They are discussing the cause of the explosion. They have now found the answer. Laboratory assistants, Janet Turner and Shirley Bugg used the wrong formula for the solution and the explosion was the result. Nurses Phyllis Farrar and Constance Jones are rushing in to give aid to Barbara Walker, a laboratory assistant who fainted during the explosion. She is now recovering, seemingly, unhurt. I smile and say, That ' s good.” The scene becomes noisy. I see many odd buildings under construction. What architect could have designed this building? Oh, here is the answer and explanation. It was designed by John Sturdivant. I smile and say, That’s good. As I look down, my eyes become invaded by the smoky atmosphere, and my ears begin ringing with the loud beat of jazz music. We are in a small night club, Gerrie ' s Kicks ; the owner -Germaine Williams. The music grows faster and louder. Six chorus girls dash out. Their faces seem familiar. Yes, they are Alice Robinson, Elmyra Rogers, Katherine Minter, Florence Jones, Effie Smith and Joann McKenzie. The show girls gayly dance off the stage and singer Leroy Parham appears, singing Show Me the Way to Go Home. There are others on the scene. I see Diane Pegram, Gloria Harris, Bertha Edwards and Jacqueline Davis. They are cigarette girls. I smile and say, That ' s good. My eyes wearily glance across to a far corner of the moon. A small cottage appears. A television set comes into view. I see the Comedian couple, Natelea and Clemel (formally Natalie Jones and Clem Brown) starring in the T.V. program We Live This Life. The channel mysteriously changes. Patricia Robertson and Eric Ridley are husband and wife on For Better or Worse. I smile and say, That ' s good. A glass rocket ship now comes into view, but it is not really a rocket ship, it is Lizzie ' s Shrimp House; the owner is Lizzie Raigns. The head chef is Lee Taylor. The polite, well-groomed waitresses are Arline Hill, Mary Parham, Annie Maclin and Annie Gilliam. Tourists Carolyn Howard, Cecelia Scott, and Patricia Cooley now enter the restaurant. They are sight-seeing on the moon for the day. Each face is lit with happiness and anticipation. I also see John Phillips, the sports editor for The Moon Times. I smile and say, That ' s good. As the heavy haze slowly drifts away, an exciting scene becomes clear. I am now at the Moon Globe Trotters game featuring the stars, Leroy Ellis, Wilbert Johnson, Samuel I. Parham, and Edward Parham. I see that Jacqueline Cephas, the T.V. script writer for The Three Stooges is there. There are many other familiar faces such as Rus- sell Harrison, who is television ' s Superman; Barbara Perry, who is starring in the motion picture Private Secretary ; and Dr. Jerome Batts, who is head physician at The Moon Medical College. I also see Jeffery Overton, the moon ' s heavyweight champion. The basketball game is now on the way and there is much excitement in the air. I smile and say, That ' s good. Shifting through the small shiny piles of stardust, a brilliant cloud rises and slowly takes form. A colorful broadway theatre appears and attractive actress Ruthel Royall and handsome actor, Tonal Scott (formally Ruth 34 Royall and William Scott) are the stars in today ' s feature Tarzan and Jane. I guess Thomas Fowlkes has really made a raise; he ' s the producer of this movie. Inside the theatre the lights slowly dim, and six mooniks (beatniks of the moon) stroll down the aisle. They are dressed in a loud purple, with red shoes, and red polka dot tarns. As they slowly strut forward, I see a remarkable resemblance between them and some of my old classmates. Oh, no! It can ' t be--Shirley Walker, Roy Briggs, Esther Turner, Horace Brooks, Mildred Fowlkes, Harold Griffin, and last but not least, James Mayfield who is wearing a purple tinted beard with a red polka dot pipe. The picture seems to be fading out. The scene is now gone. I smile and say, That ' s good. There is a sudden chill in the air, and a sweeping wind seems to be lifting me off my feet. Is the moon flipping its lid? No, that was a jet that just passed; it is now landing on the moon. Reporters from the earth, Judith Row- lette and Robert Byrd, are now stepping down. They seem very anxious to start their story about life on the moon. I smile and say, That’s good. As the cold starlight rays flicker and dance upon my face, a few fallen rays light up a scene below. It is a hospital scene. Everyone seems very busy as they pass up and down the corridors. The serious faces of Bettie and Rosa Dodson, Roberta Crump, Argie Balthrop, Deloris Bland and Rosalyn Spurlock who are the nurses in the hospital, are quite different from the happy-go-lucky ones I used to know at Peabody. I smile and say, That’s good. My tired eyes, now seeking rest, have not completed their task, however. They are too inquisitive not to look deeper into the future of my, so far, successful classmates. A huge building now becomes clear in my view; large print reads Dickerson ' s Elementary School. The school was named for Dr. Simon Dickerson, who has contributed much to the growth and development of public school and education. My X-ray vision seems to pick up several classrooms and teachers. I see teachers Carrie Phillips, Barbara Bailey, Paulette Phillips, Modesteen Jenkins, Irene Lacy, Isadora Mitchell, Catherine Lewis and Maxine Briggs. I next see a busy office, where principal James Starkes is seated, working steadily behind his cluttered desk. Also in the office are Yvonne Greene, office secretary; and Barbara Taylor, clerk typist. This school seems to be a fine example of a giant step toward better education. I smile and say, That ' s good. As I sit down on the rigid edge of the moon, my eyes slowly begin to close, and sleep seems promising; then all of a sudden, out of the clear mist of me sky appears, not a bird or a plane, but the Rocketman. This is none other than Capt. Charles Dugger, in his candy-apple red rocket ship. Other crew mates are Lt. Melvin Jones and Lt. Raymond Bailey, who seem very happy that they landed safely. Rushing out. to greet them are other airmen, Henry Lewis, Edward Johnson, Charlie Blunt, and Ernest Wilder. Not far away are several smartly dressed WAF ' S. They look stunning in their Air Force blue. Marjorie Williams, Cynthia Bailey, Willie Mae Dugger, Mary Porter, Carrie Sidney, Cecilia Morris, Marjorie Givens, and Shirley Johnson are proud members of this outfit. I smile and say, That ' s good.” As the bright starlight shines down through the mist of the moon, the bright glittery rays reflect a sparkling little glass beauty salon. The sign reads, Gloria ' s Beauty Salon, owner being Gloria Jones. Looking through the spotless glass pane, I see receptionist Alma Grayson comfortably seated. I look further and notice model Shirley Parham modeling the latest hair style, the rocket puff. I see beauticians Joyce Fuller, Alma Glover, Shirley Boone, Lucinda Davis, and Catherine Phelps, who are dressed in red uniforms with the latest hair fashions. I smile and say, That ' s good. With a slight shift of position, I gaze further. I see an attractive dress shop. There, designers, Gloria Tucker, Rochelle Shaw, and Barbara Geter have produced the best in fashions for the year. I smile and say, That ' s good. Clasping my hands behind my back, I move slowly to a large flat rock, and sit with my chin resting in my hands. Slowly the past years of our happy school days come into view and are once more a by-gone memory. The years have since then placed other important moments in our lives, and our paths have become fixed. The years- to-come will, undoubtedly, find us very prosperous; and although we may encounter many hardships and heart- aches out heads will always be held high, for the future is ours to mold and shape as we please. I now sit back counting the brilliant stars that encompass me. I see a most promising future, my beloved classmates. I smile and say, That ' s good. Eddie hurled 18 touch- down passes, and Sam cauqht 11 of them while leading the team in scoring with 82 points. Peabody 1959 Team Called Its Greatest The Peabody Lions football team, which went undefeated and untied for the first time since 1928, is the area’s only cham- pionship team for the past sea- son, having taken the state title. This was the 10th champion- ship won by the Lions, the last one having been in 1942, when the league was known as the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic League, was changed to the Virginia In- terscholastic Association in 1954. At that time the league had teams from Washing- ton and North Carolina. Best In Two Decades Many of the experts rate the 1959 team, which was coached by Albert Jones, a former Peabody star, as the greatest in the past •20 years. _ achievements of the past season. Sam Parham was the team ’s leading scorer with 82 points, and he also had the longest punt re- turn, a 90-yard jaunt for a touch- down against Maggie Walker. The longest pass play of the season was a 73-yarder from Eddie to Sam Parham. Eddie Parham threw 18 touch- down passes, with Sam catching 11 of them. His top production in one game was four, with these being taken by Joe Crews, Sam Parham, Wilmer Parham and James Hines. Scores Three Twice Sam Parham twice scored three touchdowns in one game, achiev- ing the feat against the Alumni and Dunbar. He also scored two against Maggie Walker, while George Belser had a pair against Booker T of Norfolk, Luther P. Jackson and East Suffolk. Roy Washington also scored two against East Suffolk. The Lions rolled up a total of 232 points, compared to 75 for their 10 opponents. Four of these opponents were blanked. Only three teams scored more than once against the Lions. The complete scoring summary follows: Sam Parham 82; George Belser 69: Eddie Parham 15; Peabody Beats St. Emma, 13-0, Cops VIA Title Lions Finish Perfect Year With Victory The Lions did it. Peabody ground out a 13-0 victory over St. Emma last night to finish the season with an unblimished rec- ord as a wildly enthusiastic crowd of 1,500 at West End Park cheer- ed them on. The victory gave the Lions a 10- 0 mark for the season, 9-0 in VIA play, and their first championship since 1942. It was the third loss for the Saints against three wins and two ties. It was Friday the 13th, and that proved unlucky for the Saints, who had bus trouble and the start of the game was delayed an hour and 15 minutes. There was the passing combina- tion of Eddie and Sam Parham which put the finishing touches on the Friday the 13th hex for the Saipts, as Eddie passed to Sam for two touchdowns. One of them cov- ered 61 yards and the other 12. George Belser ran for the point after one of the TDs. The first touchdown pass came midway of the first period, and it was after this one that the 225- pound pile driving Belser crash- ed over for the point. The teams battled through scoreless second and third periods before the brother combo clicked again. Er- nest Brown had returned a punt to the Saints’ 35, and Eddie hit Sam on a pass good to the 12, and ! St TTinma Nine Passes Completed Eddie Parham completed nine of 12 passes, with six of the comple- tions going to brother Sam. Ed- die has thrown 18 touchdown passes, with Sam catching 11 of them to lead the scorers with 82 points. Belser is second with 69. The Lions’ defense was paced by Bossie Bonner, Brown, Frank- lin P e g r a m, Leonard Shands, Prince Massenburg, the Parham brothers, Wilmer Parham, and Leonard Walker. “It was a team victory, and came over a very outstanding team, one much better than its record indicates,” said Lion coach Albert Jones. Assistant coach James Boone cited the good field generalship of Eddie Parham, who he said “found the Saints’ lipe charging hard and decided to use more pitchouts and flat passes.” Band Show Is Good The Peabody High band, which rates with the best in the state, put on a fine halftime show, pac- ed by the high-stepping major- ettes. Miss Eileen Redd, who was named “Miss Homecoming,” was crowned at halftime. Her attend- ants were Miss Edith Morton, Mis,s Natalie Jones, and Miss Sadie Cha- vis. The crowning ceremony was delayed from last week because of the rain. The cheering squad was led by captain Bertha Edwards, co-cap- tain Catherine Phelps, Shirley Williams, Ruby Parham, Yvonne Greene, Yvonne Heath, Barbara Perry, Mary Todd, Dorothy Shand, Ann Jackson, and Ruth Duval. 1 They have been going strong all hseason, including last week’s rainy • affair. o n n n_ n Loop Enlarges Division Peabody Officially Namec Via Group l Grid Champs PETERSBURG. You can be thankful for free schools in a country where you are free to wor- ship and work and think and talk as you please. This is your heritage from the people who built America.
