The staff of this annual hopes that the experience of thumbing through the pages which follow will give you memorable moments of pleasure and provide a review of events during the past school year. THE LION ROARS ON! CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS FEATURES CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS ACTIVITIES PATRONS ADVERTISEMENTS PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Seniors, We hear so much these days about the conquest of outer space and unexplored planets until one ' s thoughts might become a bit diffused — if not confused — about the necessity for continuing to keep one ' s eye on the things at hand. Recently I was interested to read a very stabilizing statement, written three centuries ago, by Pascal, A French philosopher and mathematician. He had this to say: It is not from space that I must seek my dignity, but from the government of my thought. I shall have no more if I possess worlds. By space the universe encompasses and swallows me up like an atom; by thought I comprehend the world . Seniors, thinking from Pascal ' s point of view, which I am sure must be the point of view of many in this great nation of ours, today may we settle down a bit more peacefully to the things at hand knowing that the government of my thought will always constitute the true government of the world. Doris Hawkins 16 HISTORY Now as the time approaches for us to leave Peabody High School, we look back to the years we have spent here with some regret that all we can take with us is the memory of many happy times together. We can remember when we first entered the halls of Peabody High School. We were the first class to enter under the five-year plan. After we were settled in our respective homerooms and classes, we entered many extra- curricular activities. Among the clubs and organizations we joined were the New Homemakers of America, the Library Club, the Science Club, the Journalism Club, the Safety Patrol, the Choir, the Pep Club, the Dramatics Club, the Band, the Baseball team, the Football team and the Projection Crew. Jacqueline Richardson was elected Chaplain of the Student Council and Reporter of the New Homemakers of America. Ramona Scott was elected Secretary of the Library Club, Robert Barner was elected treasurer of the Pro- jection Crew and Lee Fields was elected President of his homeroom. Doris Hawkins, Jacqueline Richardson, and Robert Earner attended the State Student Council Convention. Joyce A. Brown, Jacqueline Richardson, Annette Duncan, Anjean Carter, Gloria Whorl, and Janice Smith attended the Science and Math Conference. Lorraine Morgan won fourth place in the Omega Talent Hunt Show which was held at Virginia State College. As we entered our Freshman year, we felt more confident of ourselves and many of us made the honor roll. Under the direction of our sponsors Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Allen, and Mr. McKinley, we elected as our class officers, Annette Duncan, President; Robert Barner, Vice-President; Anjean Carter, Secretary; and Joyce A. Brown, Trea- urer. More of us joined and participated actively in clubs and organizations. Robert Barner was elected State Treasurer of the Industrial Arts Conference. By the time we were entering our third year at Peabody we felt very sophisticated and independent. By this time we had become very active members of all phases of life at Peabody High School. Many of us attended con- ferences and festivals, and those who participated in athletics made us proud. For the first time in our high school career, we came together as a class to plan a public activity. We pre- pared and presented a Sophomore Day program which met with great success. As time went by we became more and more a part of Peabody and it became a part of us. With our Junior year came the excitement of the prom. We took as our theme Oriental Gardens and as we prepared for the big night, the tension and excitement mounted. When finally the night came we danced and danced; We hated the time when we would sing Auld Lang Syne and say goodnight. But of course, the prom wasn ' t our only Junior activity. On Junior Day, we presented to the student body a mock trial with Bad English as the defendent. We also ordered and received our class rings in our Junior year. Since we were the first class at Peabody to get rings in the Junior year, naturally we were proud. We did not spend all our time having fun, however. Most of our energy went into our lessons. We found classroom subjects more advanced and therefore we learned to study harder. Some of us won honors at the District and State Science and Mathematics Conference and many of us took the National Merit and Scholarship Qualifying test and the Intercollegiate Scholarship Examination. Finally and with triumph, we reached our Senior year. This is the year we had been looking forward to since we had entered Peabody High School in the eighth grade. Our Senior year has been our busiest. First in our minds was Senior Day. For our Senior Day program, we invited Mr. David Gunter of Virginia State College as the guest speaker on our program. He did three marvelous poetic interpretations. We felt that our program was very much a success. Next the yearbook came to our minds. We elected a staff to guide us and started working hard. Unlike most Senior classes of Peabody, we will not receive our yearbooks before school closes, because we wish to have our commencement and baccalaureate pictures in it. Our class play was next on our agenda. We selected Meet Me In St. Louis and in spite of the short time we had to practice, the play was done beautifully. The members of the cast worked extremely hard, as did the stage managers, directors, and costume managers. This year the prom was given by the Juniors. We only had to relax, dance and enjoy a wonderful Mardi Gras. The approaching Class Day made us scuffle to get a program planned, a gift for the school decided upon, and many other details worked out. During our Senior year, we were also buckling down to our lessons and preparing for graduation. We were also busy filling out applications for colleges and taking scholarship exams. Among the scholarship exams that we took were the University- Wide Scholarship Examination offered by Howard University and the Intercollegiate Scholarship Examination. On Honor ' s Day, many of us received recognitions and awards for outstanding scholastic work, and athletic and organizational participation. Now as we say farewell to Peabody, our hearts are sad, but we will always have memories of our dear school, Peabody High. 17 SENIOR LOG Dion Diamond Dion Diamond Dion Diamond Dion Diamond Robert Barner Garnell Wilkerson Garnell Wilkerson Dion Diamond John Brown Meade Fitzgerald Marion Moore James Thomas John Brown Lee Fields Robert Barner Clinton Taylor Carl Williams Junius Dillard Meade Fitzgerald Carl Williams Marion Moore James Thomas Garnell Wilkerson Dion Diamond Lee Fields Robert Barner John Brown Cardwell Clarke Lee Fields John Brown John Brown Dion Diamond Dion Diamond Dion Diamond James Thomas Garnell Wilkerson John Brown Marion Moore Robert Barner Theodore Jackson BEST ACTOR AND ACTRESS MOST VERSATILE MOST ENERGETIC MOST POPULAR MOST LIKEABLE BEST DRESSED MOST MUSICAL BEST DANCER MOST AMBITIOUS MOST ATHLETIC MOST ROMANTIC SHYEST MOST STUDIOUS LOUDEST MOST DEPENDABLE LAZIEST MOST HANDSOME AND CUTEST BEST POSTURE CLASS CLOWN MOST ATTRACTIVE MOST ARTISTIC CLASS CRY BABY MOST CONCEITED MOST MISCHIEVIOUS MOST TALKATIVE FRIENDLIEST MOST INTELLECTUAL MOST CONSERVATIVE CLASS PEST MOST SINCERE MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED CLASS SOCIALITE CLASS FILIBUSTERER CLASS FLIRT QUIETEST MOST TALENTED BEST STUDENT BIGGEST EATER SHORTEST TALLEST Ramona Scott Annette Duncan Annette Duncan Annette Duncan Gloria Whorl Lula Harris Annette Duncan Anjean Carter Annette Duncan Camilla Malloy Eva Smith Camilla Malloy Camilla Malloy Brenda Fowlkes Ramona Scott Ramona Scott Toni Gordon Toni Gordon Doris Hawkins Ramona Scott Joyce A. LASTLY: We the class of 1959, hereby appoint the class of i960 executors of this our last Will and Testament, revoking all former wills and testamentary instruments made by us. PROPHECY As we look into the office of Grace Jones, a prominent New York psychiatrist, the intercom busses. She an- swers and hears the crisp, efficient voice of her assistant, Doris Hawkins, R. N. , announce, A former classmate of ours is here to see you, Dr. Jones. It is Dion Diamond. Thank you, Miss Hawkins; send him right in. Oh, Dion, I am so happy to see you I Is this a professional or a social call? Well, Grace, of course I ' m glad to see you; but this is a professional call. Lie down on the couch and relax. Now what is troubling you? I ' ll start from the beginning. You see, I ' m working on a new project. I was working on Alpha Zeta atomic rays, and one day as I was experimenting with a new method of synchro-cyclotronizing the rays in the laboratory. Suddenly a bright light flashed before me and I collapsed. When I came to, I thought I had collapsed from overwork. I thought the bright light was my imagination. That night I had the strangest dream — or was it a dream? I can ' t really tell. In the dream, I walked down a long corridor; as I approached the end of the corridor, I saw three doors. They were labled PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. Curiosity prompted me to enter the FUTURE. As I entered the door, a series of visions flashed before me. The first vision revealed Brenda Fowlkes and Annette Duncan, who started out as history teachers, but became interested in Archaelogy and Geology, digging in the Sahara Dessert looking for earth formations that would reveal the history of the missing link. Meanwhile, Johnny Bell was standing by to make a pictorial record. He had finished taking a series of pictures of an achievement in architecture financed by the wealthy Dr. James Thomas and designed by the firm of John Brown and Theodore Jackson for Gloria Whorl ' s recuperation Center for Paralytics. Another vision appeared and I saw Meade Fitzgerald who had become wealthy from playing professional foot- ball with the Washington Redskins. He was taking Jack Dillard and his Peabody Lions to see two former classmates of theirs with the Harlem Globetrotters, Lonnie Chavis, coach, and Marion Preach Moore, star center. Still another vision appeared revealing Toni Gordon in the audience of the presidential inauguration; unknown to the public, she was acting as an International Intelligence Agent. She was investigating a rumor that the president was to be assissinated. Even though she had many friends, she suspected everyone including Gamell Wilkerson, who was singing You ' ll Never Walk Alone , and his clarinet accompanist, Gloria Walker, and even. Eva Smith, his private nurse. I saw Arita Allen, secretary to the president, on the day following the inauguration announcing Ramona Scott and Lorraine Morgan. The president, aware of Ramona ' s linquistical abilities, appointed Ramona as official interpreter to the United Nations. Next, he appointed Lorraine as a teacher in the School for Senate Page Boys. The next vision appeared and I saw Robert Bamer, a regular customer in the barber shop of Ruth Williams, get- ting a haircut and a shave. He was telling her that the television network that he was connected with was sponsoring an Airline Hostess of the Year program and that Ruby Bland had been named. He told Ruth of a beautiful wardrobe that Jacqueline Richardson was designing; a new hair style that Dale Starkes was creating; and of a new shade of lip- stick that Dorothy Turner had created for Ruby. As a grandprize, a luscious country estate was being prepared for her by Lula Harris, a real estate agent. Just as he was telling Ruth how busy the network secretaries Marion Brown, Ida Foy, and Joyce Goode were sending out orders and invitations so that the program would be perfect, Carl Williams and Herbert Johnson came into the shop and took seats. Carl told Robert and Ruth that Easy Can Company, of which he is manager, had just employed a new accountant. Ruth and Robert were surprised when they found out that this new accountant was none other than Ruth Bragg. Herbert spoke up and reminded them all that he was an excellent brick mason. They all laughed and Herbert replied, It never hurts to drum up some business. My last vision opened with a sketch of a dynamic new jet automobile. Clinton Taylor was sitting at the draw- ing board with Janice Smith hovering over him. Clinton wanted Janice to use some of her knowledge as a research chemist to refine a suitable fuel for his jet mobile, but Janice was more interested in Clinton. Meanwhile, Lee Fields and Joyce Brown were in a public library having a friendly discussion. Lee, arguing as usual, was insisting that Clinton ' s new jet mobile did not need fuel, but could be run entirely by electronics. Joyce felt that it was mathematically impossible to run that car without fuel because of the way the engine was located and designed. Just as the discussion was getting out of hand, the assistant supervisor of the library, Cardwell Clarke, who was in the process of asking Anjean Carter to return a book, Thesis of Human Sociology , which was almost a year overdue, came over to Lee and Joyce and said, why don ' t you confer with Camilla Malloy? After all, she is making a study of the relationship between mathematics and electronics I Yes, go on, Dion. What happened then? urged Grace. And then I woke up. I ' ve had this dream every night since that day in the laboratory. Grace, what does it all mean? It means that we should have a Class Reunion to find out if these people are doing these things; and if they are, you probably have discovered a way to see into the future. And, what if they aren ' t doing these things? Then, Dion, may I suggest that you see a good psychiatrist. 20 SENIOR DIRECTORY A RITA JANE ALLEN 106 South Jones Street Petersburg, Virginia LULA GWENDOLYN HARRIS 1416 Patterson Avenue Petersburg, Petersburg, Virginia Congratulations Graduates! Although now you are graduates, you can do a great service for the rest of us, if you never cease to be students — looking for opportunities and ways to cherish the American system of free enterprise and to improve the American way of life. You can be thankful for free schools in a country where you are free to worship and work and think and talk as you please. This is your heritage from the people who built America. THE FUTURE is pretty largely in your hands — you must be vigilant and active to combat the evils of socialism, government domination of private industry, and ail the isms that destroy democracy.
