The 1957 ion Seventh Edition Peabody High School, Petersburg, Virginia ALMA MATER Peabody, we hail thee, our dear Alma Mater, Our love for thee is the song that we sing; Though far away from thy walls we shall wander Ever to thee will our fond memory cling. Ever thy children thy mem ' ry will cherish. Faithful to thee we shall all ever be. Ne ' er from our hearts will our love for thee perish. All of thy children are loyal to thee. Peabody, we hail thee; our dear Alma Mater, Our love for thee is the song that we sing; Though far away from thy walls we shall wander Ever to thee will our fond memory cling. II. Deep in our hearts will thy precepts dwell ever. Guiding us on in the pathway of life. Naught from our lives shall the influence sever Though there be others around us so rife When e ' er our hopes seem to flag on our journey. And no success shall our efforts adorn. Then shall we find thee, a beacon so sturdy. Pointing the way ever upward and on. Deep in our hearts will thy precepts dwell ever. Guiding us on in the pathway of life. Naught from our lives shall thy influence sever Though there be others around us so rife. Yes, how enthusiastic and excited we were to enter into the great halls and classrooms of Peabody High School! One hundred eighty five freshmen we were, and quickly we assumed our responsibilities. To lead us through our first year we elected as our officers James White, President; Nannette Pegram, Vice-President; Joan Darkins, Secretary and Barbara Blackwell, Treasurer. Gabrielle Neverson represented us as treasurer on the Stu- dent Council. Those who aided in the organization of the band were Christine Chance, Jac- quelyn Courton, James White, William Dance, Romeo Spratley, Ann Neverson, Stephen Jen- kins, William Brown, Jean Mallory, Matthew Chandler and Katie Coker. Rebecca Morse and Edna Hicks became members of the basketball team, and Paul Hayes affiliated himself with basketball, track and football. Nanette Pegram became a member of the Dramatics Club. Virginia Draughn was a contestant in the I Speak for Democracy con- test and Doris Wilson, Joan Darkins, Dorothy Goodwyn, Barbara Hailes and Joyce Wilson joined the Library Club. Student Council representatives were Lena Bugg, Sadie Graves, Gab- rielle Neverson, Joan Darkins, Robert Bland, and Isadora Simmons. Those who joined the choir were Ellen Powell, Nannette Pegram, Jean Mallory, Lena Bugg and Vivienne Powell, while George Edwards affiliated himself with the Trade Club. Nannette Pegram, Joan Darkins, Jacquelyn Courton, Vivienne Powell, Marie Brown, Gloria Bowles, Doris Wilson, Joyce Wilson and Evone Lane became members of the N. H. A. Lemuel Rowlerte, Leroy Smith and William White participated in the Negro History Week program; William Dance became a member of the Safety Patrol and Nannette Pegram joined the Modern Dance Group. Delores White, Elsie Hill, Doris Wilson, Joyce Wilson, Joan Darkins, Sadie Graves, Edna Hicks, Gabrielle Neverson, Marie Brown and Nannette Pegram became mem- bers of the Pep Club. After experiencing our first year, we, now 152 in number, felt a true part of P. H. S. Our class officers were Robert Lane, President; Nannette Pegram, Vice- President; Mary Moore, Secretarv; James Green, Treasurer and Melvin Dixcn, Chaplain. Our main class project was u the initiation of Sophomore Day. Our class colors were ctiarcoal grav and pink; our motto, We learn not for Today, but for Tomorrow . Our flower was the red carnation. Nan Bonner was our representative for Miss Homecoming and Gabrielle Neverson was the treasurer of the Student Council. Marie Brown became a member of the Art Club. Lemuel Row- lette, Mary Goode, Barbara Hailes, Lena Bugg and Ellen Powell joined the Dramatics Club. Bar- bara Hailes, Pearl Harrison, Lucille Granderson, Joyce Rose, Evone Lane, Edith Pritchett became members of the Pep Club. Mary Goode, Barbara Hailes and Patricia Walker affiliated themselves with the Journalism Club while James Parham and Hattie Perry joined the Vocational and Cosmetology Clubs, re- spectively. New members of the choir were Evone Lane, Joyce Rose, Joan Reid, Dorothy Good- wyn, Esther Parham, Wyonella Mason, Joan Overton, Patricia Walker and Mary Goode. Sadie Graves and Charmaine Henderson joined the Modern Dance Group. 36 To lead us on the second half of our journey we chose as our officers Lemuel Rowlette, Presi- dent; Gloria Bowles, Vice-President; Charles Hendricks, Secretary; Dorothy Goodwyn, Assist- ant Secretary; Romeo Spratley, Treasurer and Melvin Dixon, Chaplain. Under such competent leadership we eagerly under took such projects as Junior Day which took the theme, See Our- selves as Others See Us ;, the entrance of a float in the Homecoming Parade in which Mandy Jones was our representative as Miss Homecoming; the assistance in Operation Clean-up , as headed by juniors; General James Parham, Aubrey Bullock, Clifton Morgan, Mary Moore and Nannette Pegram; and then the long awaited Junior- Senior Prom. As our theme we selected Old Mexico and with the co-operation and energetic spirit of the entire group, it was the sett- ing for a colorful and enjoyable evening South of the Border . While these projects were successfully being conducted by the junior class, many juniors ex- celled in various out-of-class activities. Gloria Bowles and Nannette Pegram participated in the school operetta, Rancho Rivera . Mary Moore and Sandra Curl received A ratings in the State Music Festival; Gabrielle Neverson was our representative a vice president of the Student Council. Paul Haye s, Aubrey Bullock, George Edwards and Lemuel Rowlette participated on the Veterans ' Day Program. Robert Bland, Lemuel Rowlette and Stephen? Jenkins attended the Boys ' State Con- tention and Nannette Pegram represented the local chapter of N. H. A. in Daytona Beach. At last, we, 128 strong, returned after a somewhat endless summer to find ourselves long- awaited Seniors. We truly missed the sunny presence of Mary Moore and Sandra Curl who had de- cided to enroll at Windsor Mountain School in Massachusetts. Immediately we elected as our of- ficers Lemuel Rowlette, President; Edna Hicks, Vice-President; Joan Darkins, Secretary; Nan- nette Pegram, Assistant Secretary; Doris Jones, Treasurer; Gloria Bowles, Chaplain; James White, Sergeant-at-Arms. Our first concern was the mock election rally as conducted by the Government classes. It was indeed a project from which the entire student body benefited. Dr, Welch was our speaker for our Senior Day celebration. To further our festivities a luncheon was held in our honor. That evening a social was given for our parents. Our Senior Class play, A Little Honey , which featured Lena Bugg, Nannette Pegram, Clifton Morgan, William Brown, Charmaine Henderson, Nan Bonner. James Parham, Gloria Bowles, Jac- quelyn C our ton and Charles Brown was a tremendous success. Lemuel Rowlette, Ellen Powell, William Dance and Perry Taylor displayed their musical skill in the annual Christmas Cantata. Closely following was the Modern Dance Group Recital in which Sadie Graves and Nannette Pegram participated. As time passed we eagerly made final plans for our once-in-a- lifetime experience, graduation. Never again are we to know such carefree laughter, warm and sincere friendships, tolerant guidance and abundance of opportunities. So, though we travel our seperate paths we shall never forget the four years of struggle, learning and ultimate success. William Goodwyn, Jr, Class Flower. RED CARNATION Class Colors: BLUE AND WHITE CLASS THEME LOOKING AHEAD TO ADULT CITIZENSHIP 41 CLASS PROPHECY PLACE Ciro ' s Hollywood, California TIME Nineteen hundred and sixty seven OCCASION Metro-Goldwyn Mayer ' s premiere of their Academy Award winning picture, Life with Bill . The leading actress in this colossal production is the well known leading lady, Gabria Nervie. Miss Nervie was the former Gabrielle Neverson who graudated from Peabody High School in 1957. Before the premiere of the picture Miss Nervie is giving her former classmates a party at her mansion in Beverly Hills, California, Greeting the guests with Miss Nervie is her husband, Mr. William Brown, better known as Bill Brown. He is the head of the Department of Photography at M-G-M. The first guests to arrive are Blanche Bailey, Florence Marshall and Ann Neverson who are airline hostesses with United Airlines. While they are reminiscing we see that Ellen Powell is approaching in her Jaguar; she is now the proud bride of George Edwards. Mr. Edwards, the proprietor of The Pines, and his dear wife play the clarinet in their thirty piece band. Who is this approaching? It is Miss Lena Bugg who is private Sec- retary to Rock Hudson. During our school days we had no idea that she would become the wife of Charles Brown. We have been told that Mr. Brown is an outstanding engineer for General Motors. Tonight, at the party, the guests were fortunate to have as their entertainer one of their classmates, namely, Matthew Chandler. He recently took Gene Krupa ' s spot at the Brown Derby. As we approach the terrace we sec many of our old classmates dancing to heavenly music. Doris Wilson is doing a crazy foxtrot with James Jackson, Brigadier-General in the Marine Corps. James and Doris were married at Las Vegas this morning. As the music softly changes to the strains of the Viennese Waltz, Joan Darkins and Romeo Spratley twirl gaily about the room. Mr. Spratley was just elected to the noteworthy position of second Vice-President to the Vice-President of the United States of America. Joan is associate professor of the Home Economics Department of Iowa State College. Evone Lane, roving reporter of the New York Times, is chatting with her husband, William Dance, editor of the New York Herald Tribune. The music changes to a fast rhumba and guess who takes the most spectacular position on the floor? It is none other than Barbara James and Lemuel Rowlett. Barbara co-stars with Gabrielle in Life with Bill”. Lemuel is an intern at John Hopkins Hospital. There is quite an aggregation around the piano. In the group are Nan Bonner, Joan Smith and Jacquelyn Courton. Joan was recently promoted to the position of editor-in-chief of Charm Magazine and Nan and Jackie are art and fashion editors for the magazine. Seated next to them are Raymond Freeman, Robert Bland and William Goodwyn. Raymond was recently seen driving one of the stock cars in the Petersburg races at the Fair Grounds. William is the new proprietor of One Hour Valet Cleaners where he is doing fine work. Robert Bland has reopened Farley ' s Pool Room where all the cool cats are found. The old Peabodians in the persons of James Parham, Charles Thompson and Benjamin Graves are holding noteworthy positions with the Harlem Globetrotters. It seems that Gladys Molett, Annie Sturdivant, Ernestine Boothe and Mary Davis do not want to give up their office jobs at Peabody; Gloria Smith and Virginia Draughn have been trying very hard to take their jobs away from them. Although they are quite aware that their jobs are in danger they took the day off and came to the party. Jean Mallory is still running her place of business in West Petersburg. Here is someone with an interesting job. Nannette Pegram was just named the first woman professor of Sociology at Harvard University. Everyone, I must say, is here tonight. The new proprietors of the Halifax Street Laundrette are none other than Wyonella Mason and Esther Parham. While talking with them I learned that they operate approximately a thousand laundrettes throughout the country. Amazing, isn ' t it? Well, let’s continue with the party. The mood has changed from a rhumba to a fast jitterbug and those kids are really cutting a mean rug. Clifton Morgan and Charrnaine Henderson who have a dance act simi- lar to Marge and Gower Champion are here to attend the party after just making their first appearance at the Palace. You can’t imagine who are the big tycoons from Wall Street I They are the illustrious Carroll Raines and Leroy Smith. Mr. Smith is with U.S. Steel. New hostesses at the Fort Lee Officers’ Club are Katherine Chance, Christine Chance and Elinor Jones. They are admired for their gracious and charming manners. Today, the Baltimore Orioles signed up Walter Hailes, Willie Taylor and William Thomas. The contract is for ten years after which they will go into the skin-diving business. Serving hors d ' oeuvres are Marguerite Chew, Jeannette Goode, and Julia Clarke. They have just opened a modeling school in New York. Lucky Gloria Bowles, after having her chance on Chance of a Lifetime, is singing with the Platters. Lucille Granderson, Sadie Graves and Joyce Rose have united to form a club for securing wealthy mates. Working as a hair stylist in New York at the Rose Morgan House of Beauty are Shirley Edwards, Gertrude Berry and Audrey Tucker. Arthur Harris, formerly known to his classmates as Boo Jack , is quite a versatile young man. In addition to playing first harmonica with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra he plays left field with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Joseph Jacobs is working as an usher at the Palace Theater in New York. Because of his wonderful planning for this party, Walter Mason was elected chairman of the Democratic Party and is a candidate for President of the United States. The great fullbacks of UCLA are Leonard Reeves, Roy Williams, Gilbert Jones and Paul Hayes. As I wander through the crowd I see that Professor James White and Dr. Charles Hendricks have ar- rived. Professor White is head of the Engineering Department of Princeton University and Dr. Hendricks is a pediatrician at Petersburg General Hospital. I see that Dorothy Goodwyn managed to get away from an evening at home with Stephen Jenkins; he is the proud hubby, you know. Barbara Hailes has joined the army and fortunately is stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. Katie Coker, Clara Turner, Elnora Tucker, Patricia Walker and Delores White are holding the fol- lowing positions: Katie is teaching French at Morgan State College; Clara is the typing teacher at Maggie L. Walker High School in Richmond; Elnora is physical education teacher at Peabody; Patricia is manager of the Peabody Cafeteria and Delores White is in charge of the detention hall there. I must state in passing however, that Delores is always tardy on the job. Louis Stokes is scheduled for a title bout for the heavyweight championship of the world. Raymond Allen is doing research in Germany on one of Einstein ' s theories. During the party I was informed about some of my classmates who did not come, but I received news concerning their various careers. Edna Hicks is now head-waitress at Parham ' s Brown Derby. Miss Hicks and Mr. Parham were hitched last week. Joyce Wilson and Joan Overton are still trying to catch the talented trumpet player, Leola Scott, after all he is a millionaire. George Banks and Osborne Bailey are the proud owners of General Motors; Aubrey Bullock is hired as chief mechanic at one of their shops. Barbara Walker is now the personal secretary of Sidney Jones, the owner of the Chesterfield Motel. Kenneth Bond and Allen Perry have formed a new re- ducing plan in which both are trying to see which one can lose weight first, while Maxine Richardson and Pearl Harrison are trying to find means of gaining weight. We heard by listening to a conversation that David Williams is the executive secretary of RCA Victor Cooperation. Did you know that Solomon Jacobs and Melvin Smith are proud of their 1967 Pontiac? Well, they are. Victor Stewart is now stationed in Hawaii. He has the rank of colonel in the Army Reserve. Mr. Mandy has retired and Hugh Wyatt has taken over the Art Department at Peabody High. Well, a few more of our classmates have arrived. Llester King is hair stylist for Grace Kelly ' s daughter, Alexander Davis is the owner of the Pall Mall Cigarette Producing Center, with Raymond Goode as chief tester. Pearlee Griffin is the manager of the Gem Theater and has a chain of theaters throughout the coun- try. Ruth Fisher, Elsie Hill and Rebecca Morse are here tonight. Did you know that Ruth is the manager of the largest USO in the country with Elsie and Rebecca as her favorite hostesses? Mr. Brown is leading his guest to the door. Just arriving is Edith Pritchett, the joint owner of a cab stand. Ruth Holleman has finally found a way to exercise her soprano vocal cords, and Yvonne Seward owns a large boarding house. Before we say our last goodbyes” we make a vow to meet ten years from hence on the same date in that great metropolis of the world, New York City.
