Our junior year was full of surprises and presented us with bright new fields to conquer. Rose Reid entered the State Oratorical Contest in Richmond and won third place. Shelverden Freeman and Lula Ryals represented us in the Miss Homecoming contest. Lula won second place and Shelverden, third. Barbara Rice, Eunice Blakes and Ann Simmons joined the girls ' basketball team and all of us were overjoyed when Barbara was named the most outstanding player on the team. Shelverden Freeman represented us at the annual Art Exhibit at Virginia State College. In November, Gloria Brown and Juanita Henderson participated on the Book Week program presented by members of the Library Club. Juanita Henderson was the first place winner of the I Speak for Democracy Contest for Peabody and the second place winner for the city. In the spring of the year the Dramatics Club presented a thrilling play in the Dramatics Tournament at Vir- ginia State College. Shelverden Freeman was secretary of the club at that time. Edith Robinson, Moses Ballard, Robert Cooley and Melvin Saunders participated in the play. Ernestine Bugg, Rose Reid, Muriel Mitchell, Iretha Goode, Llt yd Mitchell, Shelverden Freeman, Edith Robin- son and Eunice Blakes became members of the band. Rosemary Young was one of the performers when the Modern Dance Group gave its annual recital. One of the most exciting projects of our junior year was entertaining the seniors at the annual Junior Senior Prom. Our theme, Moonlight and Roses was beautifully carried out. The decorations were breathtaking, the music was soft and sweet and the gowns all seemed to possess a fairy -like sparkle and shimmer. Our senior year has been our most exciting year. Lula Ryals was an attractive and poised Miss Homecoming of 1954 . The band won first place in the Christmas parade. Among the nattily dressed marchers were Ernestine Bugg, Lloyd Mitchell, Edith Robinson, Shelverden Freeman and Rose Reid. Ernestine Bugg and lanthia Turner were presented at the annual Debutante ' s Ball held at Virginia State College. Ernestine, third place winner, was second lady-in-waiting to the queen. Claudette Johnson was elected president of the senior class and Student Council. On Senior Day the seniors were presented in all of their glory to parents, teachers, friends and the student body. Ann Simmons was crowned Miss Senior by Claudette Johnson, president of the class. Her attendants were Ethel Greene, Muriel Mitchell, Rosemary Young and Lillie Kizzie, Miss Senior and her court made a striking picture in their beauti- ful pastel gowns in shades of yellow and blue. After the auditorium program which was presided over by Edith Robinson and Mary Myrick the seniors visited varous departments of the school for consultation and discussions on their desired col- lege courses and careers. The activities of the Art Club were directed by Shelverden Freeman, president; Ann Simmons, secretary and James Mason, reporter. Cyril Hawkins was captain of the football team and James Johnson, co-captain. Cyril was the most outstanding player on the team. Earl Penn and Moses Ballard also represented us on the gridiron. Other participants who gave outstanding performances were Muriel Mitchell, Rose Reid, Rosemary Young, Melvin Saunders, Shelverden Freeman, Cyril Hawkins, Mary Myrick, Moses Ballard, Edith Robinson and Raymond Graves.
