As we sail into the open sea of life we hope that we have captured for you some of the highlights of our event- ful voyage . CLASS MOTTO Today We Launch: Where Shall We Anchor? The highlights of the pro- gram were the crowning of Miss Senior and an impressive candlelight ceremony in which all seniors participated. The purpose of Senior Day is the presentation of the class to the school and community and the displaying of talent in the group. . . . Other events of the day were a senior luncheon held in the school cafeteria and an evening social for the parents . t)edicu tion We, the members of the graduating class of 1954, dedicate to you, our parents, this fourth edition of the Lion. You have been to us what the north star is to any sailor upon thevastsea. For like the star you have guided us safely in our voyage through unchartered paths . We wish to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to you for leading us thus far on our journey through life. Dear Seniors, As you leave Peabody High School, I wish to extend sincere congratulations on behaif of the faculty . Great responsibi I i ties lie ahead . You wi 1 1 need an inner fortitude to cope with the complex issues of our times during which both men and women will be needed to solve the many problems that lie ahead. With the inner reinforcements we hope you have gained here at Peabody, your dynamic energy, your ability to dare and your fine current thinking we are confident that you will attain great heights. We have much faith in you. I recall a telecast interview of an architect of national prominence who was asked the question, In all your experience what do you consider your greatest achievement? His response was, My greatest achievement is my next achievement. These words represent the philosophy of a man who has been contributing fresh ideas to the world for many decades. Seniors, as you leave, can you think of a greater challenge than the one expressed in the words of this great man? Whatever the human problems ahead, or regardless of how much has already been accomplished, you should strive to make that next achievement your greatest. Best wishes for success! Our voyage through life has been greatly enriched by our various experiences here. As freshmen crew members we participated without res- ervations in such activities as the ScienceClub, New Home- makersof America, Student Council, LibraryClub andCheer- ing Squad. The coveted title of Miss Homecoming was cap- tured by Odelia Brooks. Although we were sorely tried at times, with the guidance of our captains. Miss Sutherlin, Mrs. Merritt, Mr. Powell, Mr. Rainey and Mr. Griffin, we were able to overcome the storm. Having survived the first year without mishap we returned in the fall as proud sophomores. Everything was bright, new and shining. This was our first year in the new Peabody build- ing. We vowed to do our best to keep everything as clean and as shipshape as possible. This was also the year in which Bar- bara Morris was elected secretary of the Student Council. Fred Boddie became a member of the football team andjames Smith, Carroll Crawford, Grayce Scott and Ann Tynes gave creditable performances as players on the basketball teams. Would be Katherine Dunhams who joined the Modern Dance Group were Janie Rose, Barbara Enochs, Bessie Rose, Dorothy Evans, Barbara Morris, Sallie Smith, Catherine Moore and Margaret Perry. Nathaniel Walker and Richard Flowers satis- fied the creative urge by joining the ArtClub. Goldie Poole and LillianTucker were attendants for Miss Homecoming. Julia Lanier participated in the 1952 I Speak for Democracy contest. James Todd, Ann Tynes, Barbara Morris and Theo- dore Taylor gave their services to the Safety Patrol. Plans for the athletics of our school were made by the Junior Athletic Association of which Ann Tynes and Kathryn Griffin were members. Our football team was cheered on to victory with the help of Dolores Wiggins of theCheering Squad. Junior Red Cross members, Phyllis Stewart and Erma Tucker, performed cheerfully the innumerable duties of this organization. Au- brey Perry, Ronald Diamond and Theodore Taylor represented us in the Science Club. As we began our junior year on the S. S. Peabody, we be- came inspired with the desire to be better all-around sailors. We elected as our class officers the following persons: Cath- erine Moore, president; Janie Rose, vice-president; Margaret Perry, secretary; Grayce Scott, treasurer; and Jean Hite, re- porter. Barbara Morris participated in the 1953 Virginia Ora- torical Comest at Virginia Union University. The I Speak for Democracy” contestants from our class were Goldie Poole and Barbara Morris. Barbara won third place in the city-wide contest. Stormy seas rocked our craft fora spell during the planning period for the Junior-Senior Prom. Thoughts of the prom still provoke dreamy memories; it was a hugh success. The high- light of the ball was reached with the crowning of King Ernest Moore and Queen Iris Thweatt. During vacation time, Phyllis Stewart attended the Jun- ior Red Cross Convention at Hood College, Maryland. Ann Tynes attended the national convention of the New Home- makers of America in Texas. Summer passed in a blaze of glory and the rolling tide swept us gently, so very gently, into our senior year. Our class activities were under the guidance of Frederick Boddie, president; Theodore Taylor, vice-president; Frederickjones, secretary; Bessie Rose, assistant secretary; Kathryn Griffin, treasurer; Phyllis Stewart, reporter; Charles Sherrod, chap- lain; and Frank Studwood, sergeant-at-arms. Senior Day was a memorable one for us. Phyllis Stewart was a dignified and beautiful Miss Senior and her attendants, Catherine Moore, Grayce Scott, Lillian Tucker, Dolores Wiggins and Barbara Morris, were equally as charming. On January 14, the cast of the annual senior class play had a chance to exhibit its acting abilities in the hilarious comedy, We Shook the Family Tree . Due to limited space it is impossible for us to list in this, our ship ' s log, the many and varied activities in which We, the crew, were represented. If we have omitted anything, we beg your forgiveness; however, we can recall that Charles Sherrod was president of the Stud ent Council for this year. The Library Club operated under the leadership of Crystal Taylor. The Fire Prevention Essay Award was won by Sallie Smith. Charles Sherrod participated in the Elks Oratorical Contest. Louise Rogers and Crystal Taylor were senior rep- resentatives in the I Speak for Democracy contest. Well, life flowed on smoothly until the idea of graduation began to take shape and become a reality. As we leave our ship, our captains and this safe harbor, we turn our eyes re- solutely onward to our next ship and port. We take with us treasured memories of our high school days and the friends with whom they were shared. It is now that the true significance of our motto is re- vealed to us - Today we launch; Where shall we anchor? eruor I ' ve been telling you. Cliff - this sort of thing is bad for business. Suspense . . . laughter . . . action . . . and the annual Senior Play was off to a hilarious start. Each character played his part with such an understanding feeling that the audience was held spellbound until the final curtain call. Jree THE Hi I degarde . Mr. Dolson . Mrs. Dolson .
