How time flies I It seems only yesterday that we regis- tered at Peabody High School as freshmen. Our class was one of the largest in the history of the school. There were forty boys and sixty -five girls. Our tolerant sponsors, Mrs. T. T. James, Mr. S. F. Griffin, Mr. C. J. Powell, and Miss C. E Trotter led us through our first year with the help of Mr. A. M. Walker as principal. The first Student Council was organized at Peabody dur- ing this year and Mary Hall served as its first treasurer. We participated in such activities as the N. H. A. Club, Science Club, Dramatic Club, Student Council, Safety Patrol, cheer- leading, football, baseball, and the chorus. As sophomores we began to settle down and notice what was going on around us. Our new teachers were Miss O. H. Harrison, Miss M. P. Lewis, and Mr. C. W. Galloway. Rep- resenting our class on the Student Council were Erma Riley, Elva Morse, and Iris Thweatt. Glenn Spratley and John Archer made the trip to Nashville, Tennessee, with the 1950-51 championship basketball team. Lee Richardson occupied the limelight on the baseball team. Participants in basketball were Glenn Spratley, Thomas Edwards, James Easter, Lillian Webb, Mary Maddox, and Shirley Harris. Members of the chorus were George McCray, Joan Taylor, Marvin Pegram, Micheal Gordon, Robert Davis, Ida Stewart, Della Woodruff, Mildred Williams, Constance Crump, Helen Thomas, Char- lotte Harris, Doris Bland, Elva Morse, and Iris Thweatt. Taking part in the Junior Athletic Association were Mich- eal Gordon, Edwin Jordan and Dorothy Batts. On the football squad were Lee Richardson, and Robert Davis while Glenn Spratley expressed his school spirit as a member of the cheer- ing squad. Mary Maddox served as drum majorette. Officers of the class were Edwin Jordan, President; Ernest Moore, Vice President; John Archer, secretary; and John Waller, treasurer. Shirley Hollemon and Otelia V. Jones were attendants to Miss Peabody. As the days and months fall from the calendar like dry leaves in an autumn wind so our days at Peabody passed all too swiftly. As Juniors we were faced with the responsi- bility of planning for the annual Junior-Senior Prom, This event was one of the highlights of the season at Peabody. Geraldine Darkins participated in the 1951 Virginia Ora- torical Contest at Virginia Union University. Jean Hunter took a part in the 1951 Voice of Democracy contest. Ernest Moore served as president of the class. Lilieth Griffin was Miss Homecoming for 1951 with Shirley Howard and Jean Hunter in the roles of attendants. Joy Miller was Miss Pea- body and Doris Bland and Charlotte Harris were her atten- dants. Geraldine Darkins was president of the New Home- makers of America. Gerald Granderson was vice-president of the Student Council. Senior Year! These are words which only a short time ago represented all the magic and mystery of an unknown land. However, we have at last reached the final year of our so- journ at Peabody. The members of the class served their school and broadened themselves through continued participation in the many and varied organizations and activities which it had to offer. Shirley Harris served as captain of the cheering squad in her senior year. We elected Gerald Granderson as president ol the class and Edwin Jordan as vice-president. Elva Morse was elected by the school body as president of theStudent Coun- cil. She also served as editor of the Publicity Committee. Joyce Miller served as president of the Dramatic Club. We had a very delightful senior day and our assembly program was attended by many of our parents. Ernest Moore was president of the Junior Athletic Association and the Junior Red Cross. The Polygon Club had Jean Hunter as its president. Jean also was editor-in-chief of the yearbook. Delores Richburg and Geraldine Darkins were president and vice president respec- tively of the Library Club. John Archer made all-star for foot- ball during the year of 1952. Many Seniors participated in the choir. Geraldine Darkins and Delores Richburg were contes- tants in the 1952 Speak for Democracy contest. The follow- ing students were presented by the AKA Sorority as 1952 de- butantes: Elva Morse, Constance Crump, Delores Richburg, Ida Stewart, Charlotte Harris, and Mary Turner. Lucinder Weaver and Dorothy Batts served as president and secretary respectively of the Publicity Committee. In the year of 1952 the following seniors were runner -ups for the title of Miss Homecoming : Lillian Todd and Shirley Harris. We have now completed our four years at our beloved Alma Mater. They have been memorable years. Each has been a milestone in our lives. It is with a sense of great lost that we say our last fond farewell to all that we hold dear. 28
