Wu 4 7 JJ -:Judd 15353 5 Q gn' L' 5.113 REMI ISE The time has come for us to leave our beloved Alma Mater and to venture into aworld of oppor tumty When we began in 1948 our four years solourn at Peabody howwere we to know the 'oy and sorrow happiness and heartbreak that would be our lot for this pernod'7 None of us can forget the sense of loss and great bewi lderment which surrounded us as Fresh men However with the encouragement of our principal Mr A M Walker and our inspiring homeroom teachers we were able to pull through It IS impossible for us to forget the thrill of be longing to our first high school organizations Manifestmg an abundance of ambition lndustry and eagerness we participated in such activities as cheerleading basketball the chorus Hi Y and Trl Hi Y Clubs As Sophomores, we had a greater sense of belonging to Peabody In fact we considered ourselves old timers, That year the Dramatic Club received a bid for attention from many Sophomore notables who displayed a desire to exercise their dramatic ability. Then came our Junior year. lt was during this period that we began to realize that our goal, though still a year away, was attainable. ln the fall of l95O, George McKinney joined us. During this school year, Patricia Worthington won the city and state l Speak for Democracy Contest.Fellow classmates were on hand to bid Patricia and her sponsor, Mrs. S. B. Gust, a heartwarming au revoir when they lourneyed to Ohio for Pat's appearance on the Horace Heidt Show. For the first time Peobody's basketball team won the state championship and participated in the national in Tennessee. James B. Thweatt, James L. Threattand George McKinney made the trip to Tennessee. Ernest Shaw wentwith the boys to cheer them on to victory. With the advent of spring, we gave our attention wholeheartedly to planning for the Jun ior Senior Prom The affair which was gay and scintillating was ahuge success In September of our last year we were proud to enter our shining new building As Seniors we discarded all childish habits and wrapped ourselves in cloaks of dignity If we were to name here all Senior participants in the numerous school activities the list would go on and on to include almost everyone in the class We elected James B Thweatt as President of the class and he also held the position of foot ball captain Louise Peterson was an outstanding basketball player Shirley Ta lor and Gwendolyn Davis served as captain an co captain of the cheering squad The Student Council carried on its many and varied activities under the able leadership of Patricia Worthington, president We were also proud to have Germaine Stewart as second place winner in the citywide l Speak for Democracy Contest. Shirley Batts was yearbook editor. Ernestine Thomas served as president of the choir. Dramatics, the Safety Patrol, the Junior Athletic Association and other activities were carried on with the help of a large number of Senior Class representatives. Our school was visited by many former grad uates who were attending numerous colleges and others who were succeeding in their chosen oc cupations, or advancing in various branches of the armed services. Their attainments served as an inspiration to us who were fast becoming aware of the role we were soon to play upon leaving the sheltering arms of our Alma Mater. We have attempted to sketch for you our brief sojourn at Peabody High School. With 0Slgl1, we bid a last farewell to our principal, Mr. A. M. Walker, assistant principal, Mr. C. 5. Scott, teachers and fellow schoolmates. Although we hate to leave, we must move to wider fields and strive to make Peabody proud that she once had us as her cherished sons and daughters. 18 1 -v ' viva.: ?2T'L'L?'
