Seek goodness everywhere, and when it is found bring it out of its hiding place, and let it be free and unashamed. Place in matter and in flesh the least of the values, for these are the things that hold death and must pass away. Discover in all things that which shines and is beyond corrup- tion. Encourage virtue in whatever heart it may have been driven into shame and secrecy by the shame and terror of the world. Ignore the obvi- ous, for it is unworthy of the clear eye and the kindly heart. Be the inferior of no man, nor of any man be the superior. Remember that every man is a variation of yourself. No manls guilt is not yours, nor is any man,s innocence a thing apart. Despise evil and ungodliness, but not men of ungodliness or evil. These, understand. Have no shame in being kindly and gentle. In the time of your life, live . . . so that in that wonderous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it. --SAROYAN THE CLASS OF l959 SAYS THANK YOU . . . To Mrs. Davis who has encouraged and supported us in all that We have done. We appreciate her deep understanding of us and her interest in our class. . . . To Dr. Holden who taught us to think for our- selves and then to formulate our own convictions. We thank him for his suppolt of our class and for his sincere interest in each of us. To these, our class sponsors, we owe our deepest gratitude. They have stood by us in our work, have given much of their time and efforts to our class pro- jects, and have endured with ever-lasting patience the trials and tribulations forced upon them by us during our high school years. In acknowledgement of their selflessness, we dedicate to them the 1959 VOLUNTEER. DR. W. K. MCCHAREN DR. R. O. BEAUCHAMP A.B., B.S. in L.S., M.A., PILD. B-S-, M-A-, PUD. Memories are the jewels of life. They are far-sighted glances into our misty pasts. Each day we leave a few and collect a few as we go through the ceaseless span of time. It is not possible to record the hundreds of memories which Peabody represents. Instead, we, the Volunteer Staff of 1959, attempt only to present pictures, sketches, or words which will release a Hood of past images for the teacher or student as he looks through this annual. His hard Work and determination resulted in a scholarship to Vanderbilt, where he played brilliantly. He served as team captain during his senior year. In 1954, Coach Finch entered Vanderbilt Law School, while sewing also as coach at Peabody. After a seventeen-month Army hitch in Korea, he re-entered law school. He then resumed his coaching duties at Peabody. Although he recently joined a prominent Tennessee law firm, Coach F inch's plans for the future include coaching at Peabody. Whether you attend Peabody College or go elsewhere, we bid you good luck and Godspeed. We hope some of you may become good teachers, perhaps the greatest single need right now. We hope you will always support with your interest and money good teaching wherever you are. The past year has been a good year. Peabody Demonstration School graduates have qualified for good scholarships and good colleges all over the United States. I am especially proud of the achievement of our students in the mathematics competition. And, let us not forget the wonderful PDS basket- ball team! I thoroughly enjoyed their successes. It remains a wonderful time in which to live in the United States. With your understanding and good will and courage, the future could be the best time in the world. WALDEN S.
