Many hours in and out of class were spent to make deadlines so the yearbook could be published on time. The theme of Stepping Stones was carried through the yearbook from the front cover to the last page. We have put our dreams, our hearts, our knowledge, and our inspiration to use to achieve the best we could of perfection. The football team was led to victory on the practice field and on the playing field by captains, Lee Haskell and Mark Sudweeks. The practices were hard hitting and all the players hustled to be first in line. The team had its victories and de- feats, its glory and its sorrow but every Monday they were back out on the field fighting hard to get ready for the game that Friday. The coaches, Durrant, Worthen, Har- mer, and Kimball, were a great example of men to the team. Without these men victory would be impossible. Our team did an outstanding job this year and the banquet held in their honor was a special tribute to them. This occasion presented an opportunity to review the many achievements of our great team. This ban- quet has helped to preserve the many memories of the 1968-1969 football season and has made it a season for all in attendance to remember. This year the team worked hard to have a good team and to win their games. Every night after school it was run and sweat and hustle. Many hours of practice were spent to work out plays and to shape a group of young men into a team . Ron Gilmore displayed great sportsman- ship and teamwork as captain of the team this year. Together with Coach Worthen they kept the team in training. Coach Worthen used his knowledge and understanding of the sport to make the best team possible. To be a baseball player takes a great deal of hard work and a lot of practiced skill. This year Payson High's baseball team proved to everyone that they had what it takes to be winners. Baseball taught the athlete to think at all times. They were taughtto think ofthe immediate situation and to be prepared mentally and physically for the situation in advance. This sport tested the athlete's timing, his coordination and agility, his strength and speed, and his ability to get along with his team mates. Coach Kimball worked with the baseball team to teach them all he could about the game. He strived to instill in them the importance of quick, clear thinking and good timing. The captain of the baseball team, Charles Hansen, encouraged the team whether they were winning or losing and he set a great example for the other team members to follow. Baseball served as a valuable learning step for those who played the game. Only through con- stant practice can a team become a winner. Games were held in the gym with the studentbody officers taking charge. There was an egg rolling contest, a sack race, and a pie eating contest to name a few. After everyone was warmed up we moved into the cafeteria for refreshments and a record hop. Everybody participated and helped make the party very successful. lt helped to break the ice in the school year and was a very enjoyable evening for everyone who attended. October 9th marked the third annual Homecoming at Payson High. The activi- ties included the alumni assembly, a car decorating contest, and a very success- ful Homecoming Dance. The Payson Lions won the Spanish Fork Dons in the Home- coming Game with an impressive score of 26-0. Reigning over the activities were the Homecoming Queen, Lanna Daley, and her attendants, Debbie Gray and Debby Greenhalgh. They made very beautiful queens to reign over a very successful homecoming. This group was called the BalIadeers and they were really loaded with talent. The Balladeers sang many folk songs and popular songs. The entire studentbody throughly enjoyed hearing these people per- form. They also had some solos that were outstanding. The students of Payson High should really appreciate Utah State University for allowing us to enjoy this group of talent- ed people. Folk singer, Jim Manning, put on a very im- pressive and entertaining assembly. He is very talented in several different areas. He is a very good guitar player, has a beautiful voice, and a very funny sense of humor. He said his purpose was to encourage patriotism and to show the people that folk singers need not have long hair and can be very respectable folks. lt was surely one of the most entertaining and professionally presented assemblies of the year. When they arrived they were accused by a haunting voice, of crimes they had committed. With the murders of several people at the party it all added up to a real exciting climax. This play was guaranteed to hold you in your seats until the final scene of the play. Everyone who attended the play was held in suspense, Screams from the audience and screams from the characters in the play made Ten Little Indians, one of the best plays presented at P.H.S. 137 2 The Sophomores started a great tradition for their class this year with a great assembly and a Sophomore Frolio that was tops. The way in which he tried to do this made Rumpelstiltskin a delightful play. Adding to the excitement was a chase scene in which Rumpelstiltskin and the kings guards went running through the audience. All the elementary schools from the surrounding area were invited to this play and the younger children were fascinated with it. But, this play was not meant only for children because even the older people were pleased with the play. The entire cast deserves a great deal of thanks. We are grateful for the children and grand-children who live around us, and for the dedication they feel toward education and to the develop- ment of the young people who attend our schools. We are grateful for their willingness to bond themselves and supply the money for the building of this beautiful high school, and we're thankful for the state aid and for all things that have come to us to help us in the building of these buildings and the development of this school. We thank you also Father, for the genius of design and of building that has come into this great edifice, That those who worked on this project did so in a manner that has given us a beautiful and fine edifice in which we are justly proudg And we ask Thee Father, and we dedicate this building to its preservation and accomplishment of its purposes, that it might be protected: the grounds around it, the building, the facil- ities, from the elements, from the mischief, and from the neglect of man. That this building might stand here as a monument for many years to come, and that many young people will be able to receive the education that can be provided here. We ask Thee to bless the Board of Education who will formulate policies and the rules of this school that they will seek Thee out in prayer and in their hearts, and that they will f0rmulate policies that are for the promotion ot good, wisdom, and knowledge. We to bless those that are in charge, the principal, and the teachers, and th! they will be dedicated to the purpose for which this facility is built.
