And so it is with Mr. Williams. Interested as he is in education, it is only likely that his added energy, intellect, and ambition have combined to make him a figure worthy of respect and admiration. And these are the feelings that he most definitely arouses in his stu- dents. The duties of a high school prin- cipal are manifold, it requires omnipresent energy, detective skill, an up-to-the-minute mind, easy-going manner, directional ab- ility, question-asking ability, and a large measure for a sense of humor. We are thankful for our years at Payson High, and thankful, too, for the man who has so earnestly labored there. Our officers have worked cheerfully and tirelessly to make senior sluff day, the senior assembly, and graduation exercises events that will long be remembered. The Senior Hop was the outstanding social event of the year with Autumn Leaves as the theme. The auditorium was decorated accordingly in beautiful shades of brown, yellow and orange. As we don our caps and gowns, symbolic of the ending of high school days, our thanks and appreciation will go to our leaders who have made this year so enjoyable for us all. r -16- --nm- x 1 I 4 l Y 1 32 3: : 1 - -, Lucille Abbott Joe Ahlin Carol Ainge Sally Badham Ray Bennett V Paul Bowers Q-hm.-1' , t .,f 5 ff' DeAnn Brereton' John Brooks Connie Brunson f I ,AV . Junior Class officers, Lynne Oborn, President, Douglas Huff, Vice President, Lu Ann Harmer, Secretaryg and Karen Robbins, Representative, have led their class in a most successful and enioyable year. Their Junior Prom was one of the highlights of the social season. The theme, l'll Remember Tonight, was beauti- fully carried out in their decorations. The junior assembly, one that is always looked forward to, delighted every student. The Whole To if Talking The Whole Town's Talking, was the speech department's first play of the year. This success- ful farce concerns the story of Henry Simmons' attempts to marry his daughter to his business partner, Chester Binney. Binney is a good bus- inessman but he was never the lover type. To convince Ethel that Chester had made many romantic conquests, they concocted a phony love affair between Chester and the movie star, Letty Lythe. All was going along smoothly when who should appear in town but Letty Lythe, complete with a iealous boyfriend, Donald Swift - a professional fighter. Through misunderstandings, unfortunate circumstances, and the prodding of Ethel's beau from Chicago, Roger Shields, action comes to a peak. A fight in the dark ends up with Chester saving himself by climbing atop the chandelier. A happy ending shows Chester winning Ethel and Simmons easing out of a few tight spots 'with his wife, Hattie. ii' f -48- I CAST Henry Simmons ,,....,..s....,c.... S T 2 The second play of the school year, pro- duced on December Tl-12, was The Hangman's Noose, a mystery play. A haunted house, a dus- ty library, a secret passage, and a ghost not yet dead, were all a part of the plot. Mystery story writer Caroline Keating invited her assort- ed relatives to the reading of her will in an attempt to find the murderer of her brother. Thinking Caroline is dead, her greedy rel- atives came in hopes of inheriting a diamond necklace. Under the direction of Keep, the law- yer, and Martha, the maid, each was to spend five minutes alone in a room before they could receive their inheritance. During this time, Keep and Martha were stabbed and the murderer revealed himself to Polly. As he was about to kill her, Caroline appeared. The Revue was based on a patriotic theme, This Is My Country. There was a well-chosen selection of numbers which ranged from delightfully gay tunes, favorite standards, to deep, moving melodies. Each dance was introduced by Jim Cooper and Joel Covvan, who shared honors as the Masters of Ceremony. Orchestration was provided by the music department under the direction of Mr. J. D. Christensen. We give special acknowledgement and compliment to Miss Clara Johnson, director of the production, and to the senior dance class officers: Chris Walton, President, Mary Jones, Manager, Deann Brereton, Judy Done, and Judy Gee, Committee. A good band consists of a capable director, a Willing group of students, and the stamina to do a good iob. We feel that Payson High's band has all these qualities. Under the direction ot J. D. Christensen, the band started the year with a marching contest in Provo. Later on, a pep band played' at football and bas- ketball games. At Founder's Day they vvere also heard, and their help was greatly appreciated in the dance revue. In April, the band attended the Band Festival. Officers are: President, Raymond Hansen, Vice President, Garry Nelson, Secretary, Nancy Pulver, This group with the aid of Mr. Christensen have planned and carried out the main events of the year. The Future Farmers of America began the school year by inducting new members. After the induction a very successful party was held. During the summer, an over-night horseback trip was conducted. On November 26, the F.F.A. sponsored a studentbody assembly. That night they held the annual Turkey Strut where Christine Walton was introduced as Chapter Sweetheart with Judy Done and Marda Hartvigsen as attendants. Christine later represented the chapter in the state sweetheart contest. On March 13 Richard Jackson partici- pated in the area contest for the S300 Standard Oil of California Scholarship. He won the area contest and was later selected as one of the five winners on the state level. On March 27-28 the chapter officers attended the state convention at the Hotel Utah Motor Lodge in Salt Lake City. There the chapter was awarded the Superior Chapter Award and Richard Jackson was awarded the State Farmer Degree, the highest rating given by the F.F.A. on the state level. The cheerleaders, Joy, Christine, Kathryn, Norma, and Sallie, will always be remembered for their spirit, diligence and unique pep assemblies. The pep club performance this year brought them an invitation to march at the invitational track meet which vvas held at the B.Y.U. on April 18, 1959. Though the weather was discouraging, the girls came through with flying colors and a trophy for the school. Throughout the year the girls have sold cake, candy, and pop corn. Unsuccessful in winning many games, they showed that extra spark and perserverance to go on that is so much needed in a great team. When spirits were down and out they kept on plugging and giving the extra effort. During the season the team only won two games, of which Coach Harmer's boys pulled a big upset against Orem. This loss for Orem quickly took them out of first place in the region. The other game was a win from Springville, which was a thriller to the end. The team also came close to defeating several other teams. Joe Ahlin and Neil Losser were the captains and had a great influence on the team's morale.
