This institution of learning is the cornerstone of our present, past and future, through the spring, summer, winter and fall this building is available for our use and contains cherished memories that are in our minds, actions and those published in this year book. Precious memories of Payson High that have so enriched our lives will be long remembered. To the instructors of this school, who all possess outstanding char- acteristics in the field of learning and edu- cation and to those students who will build the foundation of tomorrow we dedicate this Paysonion of 1956. The student body officers have done their best to fulfill their campaign promises by working to their full capacity to satisfy and make the students happy. We know that this year wouldn't have been such a success without the capable guidance of Mr. Menlove, the student council advisor. Kenneth Bowers, the Student Body President has exhibited his fine person- ality and capability of this position by the means and ways he has carried out his duties this year. His energetic spirit and fine qualities of leadership has rubbed off on to the student body, thus making this year one of the best years ever and also has made us better students and citizens. Robert Spainhower, through his fine characteristics and excellent personality has fulfilled the iob as Vice-President successfully. He has devoted much of his time and talents to the upbuilding of our school government. His thoughtful remarks and witicism has made the drudgery of the year easier on the students of Payson High. The Secretary for the past year was Shirley Jeremain. She has tried her best to carry out her work in a way which was expected of her. Through her pleasing personality and thoughtful intelligence, she has met the tasks of this job well. Her life will always be enriched by the fine experience she has gained from this position. Louise Erickson, our Business Manager for the past year has been a com- manding force in all the business procedures that have taken place this year. Abby had all the boys around her from the college until they practically ignored their own girls. ln the end the mother and daughter fin- ally settle themselves to the point that every- one is satisfied. This play was established among the important plays of our time. It is based on a poetic conception of death suspending all activities ot three days during which period he falls in love with a beautiful girl, and through her realizes why mortals fear him. The setting was very unique for this type of play with eloquent properties. Costumes were made to fit the beautiful three-act play in every respect. O This annual yearbook is the result of the hard work and combined efforts of the members of the Photography class. The students have put forth their best effort in making the 1956 yearbook the best ever. With Doyle Liddle acting as advisor, we pitched into the actual recording of events and activities of the school year. Heads of the publication this year are: Gary Pickering and Keith Warner, co-editors, Kent Warner and Harold Taylor, business managers. It has taken most of the year to prepare in words and pictures this presenta- tion of the various activities and events of the school year. Our one aim has been that through unbounded time, this school year will live as recorded in this T956 Paysonian and give to those who finger its pages, life again in P. H. S. Agriculture is one of the most important fundamental functions in the United States. lt is inevitable that if this class were struck out of the school organization many problems would arise which would be beyond the control of any president, congressmen or some other intellectual person. Preparing boys to be future farmers of America is Ben Leathen's job. Those elected to help him see that the Chapter functions properly are: Hyrum Wilson, Ray Okelberry, Duane Haskell, David Christensen, Robert Spackman and Fred Openshaw. Many fine events have taken place during the year which were headed by the Ag Club. The most outstanding one was the Turkey Strut held on November 23. Other activities were the Father's and Son's Banquet held March l. Officers attended the State Convention which was held at Hotel Utah on March 30-31. Climaxing their activities was the electing of new officers, who will head the Chapter next year. They are: Paul Staheli, President, Arnold Ainge, vice-president Mont Sperry, treasurer, Lynn Stewart, reporter, Dixon Black, assistant reporter and Ronald Finch, sentinel. Chosen as the Chapter Queen this past year was Dona Dean Simons. The Payson chapter won state honors at the state convention by attaining four State Farmers who were: Ray Okelberry, David Christensen, Keith Barney and Fred Openshaw, -36- F H A OFFICERS Back row: Carol Ann McClellan, Coleen Peterson, Connie Clark, Marcia Francom Front row: Jeanne Higginson, Pauline Barney, Mona Rae Lamb The Payson Chapter of F. Highlighting the chapters activities was the annual Fashion Show and Mo- ther's Tea, which climaxed the years activities. Other featured activities of this club were: The come as you are party held November 2. The girls came dressed in party dresses to dusters. Refreshments were pot luck. Then came the biggest event of all. The slumber party, which was held on December 22. The girls received gifts from Santa at the bewitching hour of mid-night. Berts, adopted by Sigmund Romberg. It was presented March 7, 8, 9, in the Payson High School Audi- torium. The action of the operetta took place in Vienna in 1826. Many musical numbers are well known, being those of Schubert. The operetta is based around Franz Schubert's life and love affair with a beautiful maiden who he loses to Schober. Bellahruna does everything in her power to get Baron Schober for herself and causes a lot of sorrovvfulness with Mitzi and Schubert. Mitzi falls in love with Baron Schober and Franz Schu- bert is happy to unite them. The Payson High Band with its fine group of instrumentalists has proven that they are an exceptionally well coordinate group. The band under the direction of J. D. Christensen has competed in various music festivals and marching contests where they have proven to be well instructed. The Payson High Band was rated high in the festivals held at Springville in which many members participated in competition as soloists, small group numbers and precision marching. A drive for new uniforms has topped the bands activities and it is hoped they will have them for use next year. J. D. Through the dance, we lived again many happy memories of our childhood and school days. A twelve piece orchestra and a number of chorus students, under the able direction of J. D. Christensen, set the mood and background for the dance. The Senior Dance Class received wonderful cooperation from the Junior and Sophomore girls to make this revue one of the year's outstanding events. Seventy boys participated in two of the dance numbers. Lyle Cooper and Stanley Wilson shared honors as Master of Ceremonies. Sonia Francom, Joyce Greaves, Maurine Le- Fevere, Diane Beddoes, Linda Perry and Kath- leen Peterson were dance class officers. Our congratulations to the director, Miss Clara Johnson and the girls for another beautiful pre- sentation that will long be part of our Moments to Remember. 0000 0000 0'00 D if GMU, '....t so ' , .fi Xi 0 Q1 Leading the school in Pep Rallies this year were: Diane Stevens, Dona Simons Nancy Sandford, Deanne Taylor and Barbara Wilson. In their snappy costumes made of green velvet with white underskirts and white shoes, we feel the Cheerleaders of 1956 have made an excellent showing in keeping up the school spirit. Our energetic Cheerleaders filled the hearts of each Payson Lion with cheers of victory and yells of courage, which were high at all times. The Lions, under the able coaching of Coaches Fuller and Del Allgood, were led by Co-Captains Neil Davis and Keith Warner to dual matches. Payson's ag- gressive team of experienced wrestlers proved too much for B. Y. High twice, Springville, Carbon, and Lehi twice. Four matches were lost-one each to Car- bon, Provo, Delta and Cedar. ln the regional meet at Brigham Young University, Payson proved to be the strongest team by placing eight firsts, three seconds and one third. Those boys qualifying for the state competition were Wilson, Warner, Bradley, Bills, Nelson, Bowers, Schramm, Davis, Clark, Gay and Johnson. At state, Payson grabbed five places. Keith Warner and John Clark gained state championship honors by taking first places in their respective weights.
