You may be surprised, however, to find this play very familiar to you. The original title for this piece was Twelve Angry Men, and it was written as a television script by Reginald Rose in the 1950's. Still no help? Hmmmmm. Perhaps you have seen the Academy Award winning movie, Twelve Angry Men, which starred Henry Fonda. Lee J. Cobb, and E G. Marshall? No? Well, maybe you caught the Murder. She Wrote episode last year, in which Jessica Fletcher had to serve jury duty when a young man was on trial for murder? Missed it? Wow. Where have you been? The plot is deceptively simple Twelve ordinary people are called to decide the outcome of a six day murder trial. The case seems straightforward. An old man was the victim. His son, with whom he often fought, is on trial. The son's knife was proven to be the murder weapon There are two eye-witnesses. And, the son has no substantial alibi. As one juror puts it, This case is A. B, C. You will see no part of the murder during the play, nor will you see the trial. But, you will watch the decision made whether to allow the accused young man to walk away free of punishment, or be sentenced to death for the murder of his father. Construction Crews: Mike Ketchum, Jodi Lnagley, Julie Guyot, Allen White, Jamie Everett, Janeene Gilonske. Mike Osborne, Julie Merrick, Carla Miller, Dave Epps. Conni French, Lonnie Sanderson, Mike Chenoweth, Becky Jarboe Cast of Characters: Front row: Becky Jarboe. Julie Guyot. Julie Guyot, Lori Hylbert. Carla Miller. Jodi Langley. Scott Ellis, Janeene Gilonske. Back row: Kurtis Smith, Traci Griffin, Lonnie Sanderson, Sheryl Bluhm. Kim Lescalleet. These twelve jurors can decide whatever they wish, no questions asked. 1. Just grow a real one. Kurtis. 2. Where's my hairspray? 3. Number 21 Twelve Angry Jurors is a demonstration of the Amer- base 4 You at the window, we haven't got all day! 5. Go back to where ican judicial process at work. It explains how decisions are you came from. 6. Go ahead, make my day 7. You think he's innocent? arrived at in our democratic society. No play could be more important to our general education as responsible American citizens than Twelve Angry Jurors. 10 At Aa ft Β G R A D U A T I O N 12 The Baccalaureate service was held on Sunday, May 29. The highlight of the evening was the traditional presentation of roses to the graduate s mothers. The Commencement ceremony was held on Friday, June 3, in the high school gymnasium. The class has been through a lot together but they did not get discouraged; they learned how to work together and as a result gave new meaning to the word FRIENDSHIP ... Martin Orthodontist She left us all for a better place, But we ll never forget that delightful face. Too many memories she left in our hearts β In all her successes we feft a part. Kim ABE Celebrating her 17th birthday last year Was a memorable event, causing laughter and cheer It was the start of a winning season, And Abeβs determination was the reason As a naive'freshman on the bus we often heard. ' Are we to the crosses? Is that a buffalo herd?β How much farther?β Are we there yet? Were constant questions until she became a vet. With her along the bus trips were never dull. She would entertain and have a ball. Volleyball trips to State with her were a blast. In the role of fun-maker, she was cast. On a red light Turn left she would say. And we would all laugh as the driver did obey. I Wanna Be a Cowboyβ she would sing constantly. It would psyche her up to perform expertly. Outspoken and sincere were traits she possessed. How our Honest Abe' felt, one never had to guess Her Hollywood discus and medals remain As an everlasting reminder of her local fame. When we see a cocker spaniel or a little yellow car, We think of our Abe and how fond we are Of her courage, her success, her fun-loving life. And the memory strikes our hearts like a knife. On Mam we look for Abe on a license plate. And recall a friend and teammate who was really first rate. Julie Abel may have left us for a long while. But she will always be remembered with a tear and a smile. It was obvious if her discus throw was not up and out. Written by Mrs. Tom Molck in memory of Julie Abel 1969-87 She carried it back with her head bowed and on her lip a pout. She would step in the ring, so small and petite. And blow away her competition at every big meet With great pride, she placed eighth in State. And after four years, breaking the school record was great Success was always her greatest desire. But fun ran a close second with this little live wire. 17 18 F SO JUN SEN I FRESH SOPHOM JUNIORS SEN IORS ! FRESHMEN! In order to be eligible for this award, the students are graded on a point system based on grades and their involvement in sports, organizations, and community service. Each student is honored at the Exchange Clubβs monthly meeting for the month that they are designated as Student of the Month. The student that has the highest score on this point system receives the Youth of the Year Award. The Youth of the Year for the 1987-1988 school year was Shelly Litwiller. State Sc toΒ£a i Illinois has the distinction each year of recognizing outstanding achievement by the state's high school students. In order to meet the eligibility requirements each state scholar applicant must be a high school senior, rank in the upper half of the class, and take either the SAT or ACT during the fifth or sixth semester of high school. After the Illinois State Scholarship Commission receives the test scores, they are evaluated and those scores which are high enough to warrant additional consideration will be evaluated along with each studentβs class rank. Recipients must rank in the top ten percent of their class. The three Amigos The Junior Varsity squad opened its season with a victory over Ford Central. They came home to defeat conference foe Hoopeston East Lynn. The rest of the season the spikers struggled, but ended their season on a positive note by defeating Iroquois West. The team was made up of just four sophomores, so the freshmen were leaned upon heavily. Their 'record was 4-16 The co-captains were Carrie Vaughn and Jennifer Bayles, with Miss Bettis as their coach. VOLLEYBALL Johnny Johnny had big feet ... The varsity volleyball team finished the season with an excellent 18-4 record. The spikers defeated Prairie Central for the first time ever and Mahomet-Seymour for the first time in six years. Another highlight of the season was defeating Hoopeston-East Lynn on their home court. The big disappointment for the Mustangs was losing to Cissna Park in the Regional Championship, after beating them in the regular season. This yearβs team was strong defensively with four of the six starters making it onto the all-time spike recovery record list. School records were broken by Anne Rinkenberger in the spike recovery and spike for points categories. Also breaking school records were Audra Hull in blocking and Candi Hofer in total good serves. She finished in the top ten in four invites and won allconference recognition for the third year in a row. She was also named most valuable runner. Sue has led the Lady Mustangs for three years and will be greatly missed cross country season. Also helping the team were freshmen Chanda Bozman and Nicky Allen. They finished fifth and sixth at the conference meet. Sophomores Marina Miller and Laura Swain had a good year, and were much improved by the season's end They helped the Junior team win an unscored victory at the conference meet Junior Nikki Riggleman was out for most of the season due to injury and illness, but plans to help the Lady Mustangs next year. The year was successful because of all the freshmen who gained experience. The team started the year with a slight disadvantage β the fact that they had no experienced ball players over six feet tall. This showed up in the scores of the first six games After Christmas break, the team started playing up to their potential and they were able to register a couple of victories. By season's end they had shown marked improvement and were competitive with every team they played The final JV record was 4-17 and the Freshman squad finished 4-4, giving hope for a better season next year. The junior dominated team beat Prairie Central and Iroquois West to head into the tournament at Rossville with enough momentum to win the Consolation Championship. The team used a man to man full court press to put a lot of pressure on the opponents. Because of the lack of height, usually they gave up about 3 inches a man to most conference teams. They used their quickness to offset the size differential. Mark Coplea (Jr.) led the team in scoring, averaging 20 points a game, followed by Kevin Biehl (Jr.) with 17 points. Senior Jeff Blackford and Kenny White with Kevin handled the rebounding inside. Kevin led with a 6.5 average. Craig Hewerdine, Jeff Graham, and Kenny Patrick all played effectively a great deal this season. Four of the five starters will return next year. The chapter has competed in many contests where they placed first, such as Section Crop Judging and Soil Judging. They placed second in Farm Management. They had four second place speakers at the section public speaking contest. They also had three section Foundation award winners, one of which was a district winner and will move onto state. The FFA Chapter participated in several community activities, such as helping with the Community Sale, collecting money for the Heart Fund and the Cancer Society, and selling tags for the Senior Citizen Center. They sold popcorn at all home football and basketball games They conducted two petting zoos, attended the State and National Conventions and showed successfully in the summer and winter FFA fairs. One other accomplishment that the FFA Chapter is proud of is restoring their ever-forgotten doughnut machine and putting it into production. β² 4 115 1 Public Speaking Team Danny Starkey β 2nd place in Extemporaneous. The third annual Paxton Invitational was a great success. Seven bands participated in two divisions, with Champaign Centennial placing first in parade, field show, flags and drum majors as well as grand champion for Class A. In class B. Blue Ridge placed first in parade and field, and also had best percussion, drum majors and flags. The Paxton band performed in exhibition as host band. The flag line started the 87 season with new flags and uniforms after raising money over the summer. The '87 show music consisted of Old Man Riverβ; βGet Your Boogie Down, featuring the drum line; Lean on Me with Mike Reck-owsky and Mike Kellerhals as soloists along with Mike Luttrell; You've Lost that Loving Feeling with Nikki Riggleman as soloist and Phil Meyer and Mike Reckowsky on trumpet duet. The parade song was Excalibur. Ending the season was a well-prepared drum-line. They travelled to Algonguin and placed second in competition against several top Chicago area high schools. The band consisted of 37 winds, 11 percussion, 18 flags, 6 honor guards and 2 drum majors. Mrs. Nuss applied for the opportunity to play in the National Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington. D C. After learning they had been accepted, the band worked for the next three months to earn the $20,000 needed for the trip. Thanks to the community of Paxton the students met their goal. Many long hours of preparation and practice led up to the trip. The brigade left on Thursday. April 7 with Channel 3 giving an exciting send off broadcast. While in Washington the Band toured the Smithsonian Institute, the various memorials, the state capitol. National Archives and Arlington Cemetery. Many students were awed by the seemingly endless list of names of the Vietnam veterans killed or missing. This was an experience that most will never forget. The highlight of the trip was. of course, the Cherry Blossom Parade. The Brigade walked away with second place out of ten bands in Class B and the Flag Corps earned second place out of over twenty units. The trip was tiring but extremely enjoyable stated Mrs. Nuss, the band director. Iβve never been more proud of our band.β 1988, the second and best year, was a very promising year for SADD Mr Tuggle was the sponsor again SADD made a bigger name for itself by doing many different activities. During Homecoming SADD placed various posters around the school warning students of the dangers of driving drunk. In March SADD set up a booth at the Business Expo drawing nearly 1200 people to register for the free pizza and fill out the question sheet. During prom SADD had its second annual poster contest and received 60 pledges from students promising that they would not drink and drive. SADD also passed out keychains to the people attending prom. The group sold membership cards and worked concessions for money makers. They also chose to help the band in their trip to Washington. SADD is a very promising club and has hopefully saved some lives and will save many more in the future. First row: Mr Tuggle β Advisor. I experienced a lot of things just like a little kid. and asked a lot of questions that probably often sounded stupid to an American Part of me because a little Amer ican I began to understand American culture, not that it is possible to understand a whole culture, but just the day to day things They seemed totally strange in the beginning, then started to make sense and fit in a pattern Sure, it wasn't always so easy Some habits are hard to understand and you are tempted to think, How can they think like that? Just take something like school spirit In Germany schools don't have school teams So. in the beginning it seemed very strange to me that students and even other people go to a game where their school, an institution that a lot of them don't even like, competes against another school The Americans gel really hyper about their high school games and even newspapers write about it1 This is only one example of many things and habits I couldn't really understand, but they seem quite normal to me now After spending a year here a lot of these habits even have become my habits I missed some things we do in Germany and you don't do here I will miss American activities when I gel back home It is hard to be put in a foreign country from one day to the other I want to thank my host family, the teachers, and my friends for the way everyone treated me. helped me to un derstand your country and your language II made it quite easy for me to make this my second home. It was a great experience that I will always remember I never though! that I would be an ex change student when I first learned the Al phabct It was so different from my country's language, but my mind was changed by VCR I saw a lot of movies about this country I yearned to have a life in this country My reason to come to this country was easy But the reality of the life in this country was so dramatic I noticed a big miss when I got here I didn't think about how much I could speak I was just surprisedd when I heard the people speaking They spoke like a machine gun They spoke the words that I didn't know one right after another One of the biggest surprises in this country was the flags I didn't know any of those, but it was no problem after awhile Lveryone taught me very nicely Actually nobody told me what those words meant, so sometimes I got in trouble, but it was kind of fun I had a lot of hard times in this country The language, new culture, and especially U S History class were Greek to me I don't even know my own country's history let alone another country's Not only history class, but Biology and Speech, my report card was always sad This one year was a continuation of problems, but I had a wonderful time I am glad that I could have those hard times because I knew a lot of the other exchange students had a hard time and became nice people I had a nice hard time as much as them So I hope I could be like them This one year was not enough to understand anything, but it was a revolutionary year to me I feel something began to be changing to a good way In my mind that is because of you Thank you. everybody 127 The Blue and Gold Staff consisted of Mike (the floater) Osborne, the mysterious Connie French, Crazy John Debuskey, the shy Kerry (Kenny) Sullivan, the aerobic Carrie Vaughn, Christine (Quasi) Busey, Kelly Huron, the lone freshman, and Jamie Everett (on medical leave from P.E.), sponsored by the bearded Mr. Harber. The creative and imaginative Blue and Gold staff produced five outstanding issues. They included a wide range of topics, they also produced their annual spoof issue. Writers covered a wide range of topics including interviews with teachers and students, games and quizzes about people and places at PHS. 128 Students in the ICE program get a taste of life in the work force while still in school. The students work half days and attend school the other half In the classroom, students learn about job relations, consumers education, and basically how to get along with people ICE students are also members of VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). The main events of VICA included a banquet and a trip to Great America The banquet allowed the students the opportunity to show their appreciation to their employer and everyone involved in showing support and patience throughout the year. During the first week of June, the class took a trip to Great America and enjoyed a day basking in the sun and seeing the sights of Chicago. VICA Officers: Kathy Griffin. President; Shelly Fickbohm.
