In the time of death, It Is the first that we will miss — as friends, students, faculty, and staff, we will miss the everyday physical presence of Rick Rundquist. As his friend and school neighbor for sixteen years, I will miss seeing him standing In his classroom door waiting for the next class to pass; those who shared lunch with him on Fridays will miss the joy of the food that he prepared; students will miss his Interest and talk of fhe music of their generation and his detailed and well prepared dedication to teaching foreign languages. To me, my friend Rick Rundquist will always be: Eating a slice of pepperonl pizza at Papa Del’s Laughing at teachers like ourselves In the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” Listening to a rock group I don’t understand Smiling as he told a freshman, “This is no longer Junior high.’’ Recording times at a cross country meet Never passing a bookstore, record shop, or Baskln-Robblns without stopping. As Conrad Aiken said in his poem, “Bread and Music, “We may then come to understand the difference between experience and the memory of that experience. The poet says, Music I heard with you was more than music, And bread I broke with you was more than bread; Now that I am without you, all Is desolate Your hands once touched this table and I have seen your fingers on the glass These things do not remember you beloved — And yet your touch upon them will not pass. For it was In my heart you among them, And blessed them with your hands and with your eyes: And In my heart they will remember always — They knew you once, o beautiful and wise. Today I will mourn you and sob, my friend Rick Rundquist; tomorrow I will remember you and smile. — Excerpt from the eulogy by Fred Guyot Yo me llamo... 3 The theme for this yearbook is “That was Then; This is Now”. This is somewhat appropriate for 1987. In the fifties, there were poodle skirts, bobby socks, the ducktaii, and the fiat top. In the sixties, we had old army clothes and paisley. In the seventies, we had mini skirts, leisure suits, polyester and long hair. But the eighties? What statement has been made in the eighties? Now we have flat tops, army clothes, paisley, mini skirts (some paisley mini skirts) and long hair. People in the eighties seemed to have reached back and taken bits and pieces from the last four decades and fused them together into a familiar, yet unique style. If one were to place a title on this decade, it might be called, “The Decade of Revival.” There have been many remakes of songs such as “Venus, “Walk This Way,” “Twist and Shout,” “Stand By Me,” and “Twenty-five or Six to Four.” The once popular rock group “The Monkees” had a revival concert as did the singing duo of Simon and Garfun- THAT WAS THEN kel. The popular sixties movie “The Hustler” was remembered with the sequel “The Color of Money.” Our present decade has become a decade of individualism by mixing fads, fashions, and the music of this time. Homecoming’s Spirit Week was made up of five Spirit Days. Monday was Punk Day, Tuesday was Hats, Shades, Ties, and Buttons Day, Wednesday was Fifties Sixties Day, Thursday was Dress-as-Your-Favorite-Teacher Day, and Friday was Blue-and-Gold Day. Students and teachers alike dressed to show their spirit for all five days. Another Spirit Week activity was the first annual PHS Olympics which was held Monday through Friday during the lunch hours. Olympians competed in such categories as the Ping Pong Free Throw, the Pillowcase Race, and the Three-Legged Race. First place winners were Tim Harrison and Damjan Ron-cevich. THIS is NOW 5 THE GAME On Friday, September 26, 1986, The Paxton Mustangs clashed with the Tuscola Warriors in The Bax-ton homecoming bout. The weather was good and lots of fans turned out to see the game. Offensively, Paxton struggled for the whole game, while defensively, the Mustangs played well, only giving up a few big plays. The Warriors’ minds were set on defeating the Mustangs just as Paxton had done to them one year before. Just as it seemed that the Mustangs were going to come back in the second half, 1-57 Stadium’s entire lighting system failed, dampening the hopes of the Mighty Mustangs. After fifteen minutes, the problem was corrected and the two teams resumed play. The Warriors were successful in defeating the Mustangs. The final score was 19-0. This year’s homecoming dance was held on Saturday, September 27, 1986 in the Paxton High School cafeteria. The theme was “Heaven in Your Eyes” by Loverboy and the band was “Backstage.” Freshmen attendants were Shawn Mercer and Richard Foellner. Sophomore attendants were Karen Rinkenberger and Charles Olaf. Junior attendants were Sue Meyer and Mitch Deason. Senior attendants were Pam Mitchell and Corey Miller, Julie Reber ahd Alan Shovan, Debbi Short and Tom Dewey, and Kara Hartz and Tim Harrison. Julie Reber and Tim Harrison were crowned Queen and King. Crownbearers were Debbie Shields and Ben Harber. THE DANCE THE PARADE This year’s Homecoming parade was held Thursday, September 25, 1986. Many townspeople attended the event. The parade had a new flavor added to it this year. Homecoming Queens from as far back as 1940 participated in it. There were two mother-daughter combinations; Julie Reber and her mother, Pam Hartley-Reber, who was Paxton’s Queen in 1961, and Debbi Short and her mother, Connie Burkland-Short, who was crowned Homecoming Queen in 1964. The parade was followed by the traditional pep rally and bonfire. Coach Forsyth introduced the Mustang football players and asked the townspeople to come out and root for their team in the game the following evening. After Coach Forsyth’s speech, Danish Youth for Understanding Student, Soeren vid Stein gave a special talk about how he found American life to be so far. Following Soeren’s speech, Student-Council President, Damjan Roncevich announced the Homecoming Court and the Float Place-Winners. Becky Litwiller, the 1985 Homecoming Queen was unable to attend so Jennifer Wolf, the 1984 Homecoming Queen had the honor of crowning Julie Reber our 1986 Homecoming Queen. The seniors were awarded first place in the Float-Contest with their chicken wire and toilet paper rendition of “The Gong Show.” They were followed by the second place sophomores, third place freshmen, and fourth place juniors. However, it was also a year of new beginnings. It saw the birth of Paxton High’s Class of 1987. A woman called Golda took office as the new Isreali president. Warren E. Berger began his 17 year reign as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and a rookie colonel gained control of a small African country, Libia. He was called Moammar Khadafy. Also, the United States jumped ahead of the Soviets in the space race with Neil Armstorng’s “small step for man, giant leap for mankind. 1969 was also a busy year in the courtroom as James Earl Ray and Sirhan Bishara Sirhan were convict- ed of slaying Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy respectively. Also, Edward M. Kennedy pled guilty to leaving the scene of an auto accident at Chappaquiddick Island. His passenger, Mary Jo Ko-pechne drowned. But. we were all ready to strut our stuff at the 22nd Annual Paxton Business Expo. As I walked into the gymnasium. I was amazed to see all the success that some of my classmates had achieved I was hungry and decided to tour the stands that offered to give free samples of food. Former PHS discus champ Julie Abel had combined her former experience at Hardee's with her athletic ability to produce the Big-Big Cookie. Five-star chef Marla Knuth provided a sample of her world famous Hamburg de School Cafeteria Delighte to celebrate old times People who were at the stand for all five days of the expo said she made the meat available EVERYDAY. Former PHS buddies Mike Allen. Tim Harrison, and Tracy Young made their fortunes running the fish restaurant Skipper's Gallery. They claimed they had developed a taste for the food on the double lunch hours they took back in '87 Salads were provided for those watching their diets by famous green grocer John Green who made lots of lettuce by selling lettuce. Tammy Emberson. once a waitress, and former pizza delivery boy Brian Sanderson had combined their talents to start TIP AND TREAT- a service that delivered treats to little kids on Halloween I was getting tired after all the food so I thought I would check out the exercise booths Sure enough, there were Kung Fu experts Don Bott and Mike Walker mixing it up in their booth I got a kick out of watching them. Next to their stand was a stand run by Anthony Belz and Eric Edmonds, who had somehow managed to invent the ever-pop-ular X-rated hackeysack ball At a nearby stand, former athlete Debbie Short, who was said to live, sleep, and eat basketball had just taken over a new restaurant Dunkin' Donuts. I walked on before I was recognized I heard. Hey. Man! but it was only weight-lifters Mil-ton Irvin and Tom Dewey pumping iron at their weight machine display Although Dewey now weighed 105 lbs. I recognized him by his Nautilus tattoo and the dark glasses I recognized Milton by his 1987 Doors T-shirt. Dewey. who had starred in the NFL for three minutes. had joined PHS great Corey Miller, who had seen 17 minutes of action in the NBA. to form Athletes Anonymous for former PHS stars who had passed on into oblivion. Nearby, a sparkle caught my eye. It was former PHS star Kirk Peters' earring. He was helping classmate Aaron Harmon, now a famous diamond dealer, manufacture fashionable jewelry for PHS students. I bent down to examine their work when I was nearly struck by a bowling ball. It seems that professional bowlers Chad Palmer. Alan Shovan. and Brian Schroeder. new owners of the Paxton Lanes, were having their championship bowl-off series. Palmer converted the 8-10 split on a lady near me and I called for a doctor. Instant help arrived-sort of. Connie Pilking-ton. a new director of the Paxton Hospital, now called the California Clinic for Out-of State ownership, arrived quickly with the insurance forms. Tina Vaughn, director of the Easy Rest Nursing Home, stopped by. I was desparate. I yelled for a doctor. One arrived Julie Reber examined the victim and said that she had merely fainted and was now suffering singultus spasms Ray Hewerdine. car wash king, sprayed the woman with water from the new combination miracle sprayer and potatoe peeler that he was demonstrating All the water drew the attention of Bob Carlton who had turned his two greatest loves ( fishing and baseball) into a personal fortune He was now a carp sandwich vendor at the Cubs games. The water also drew a pair of millionaires who had amassed a fortune in Florida following their high school days. They were suntan lotion experts Lisa Ream and Debbie Merkle who had managed to mix creme de menthe. rock music, and a fondness for human skin to produce the new tanner Fire Extinguisher Just around the corner I ran into a row of strange exhibits There was Pam Mitchell modeling Kangaroo clothing and alligator shoes It seemed that she now worked for Chuck Douglas, who ran a service that flew such items out of the Australian backwoods Jim Swinconos. a multi-decorated military pilot, was the main flyer for Douglas' UPCHUCK. INC Douglas himself had come to America to star in the new film Crocodile Chuckie Next to that booth was the styling booth of Tara Young, who had combined acting and hairdressing to win seven Academy Awards for hairstyling of rabbits in Walt Disney movies Laurel Brown, who had made a fortune appearing in Guiness' World Book as the bald-headed Hari Krisna who had made the most a for Ba-Baker and Kara Hartz Mike Baker, a former Coast Guard Admiral, had his booth next door and was campaigning under the slogan It's all water under the bridge Miss Hartz giggled and passed out smiley faces I heard a rumor floating around that the whole campaign was financed by millionaire Damjan Roncevich. who had made a fortune installing security devices in high-risk crime areas and fast food restaurants. Jodie Betts, a former Supreme Court judge, had just been named campaign manager and I spoke with her awhile. We wandered on past the educational display where Clara Peterson principal H.J Flesner had posted several inspirational Latin slogans and Paxton's first woman junior high principal. Michelle Houser, had tacked up some unruly students. I saw that several other PHS students were in the office and paper supply business Wendy Doan and Leigh White h 3d ned tr. high school note-passing abijj6‘ int th€ :;iuf :cture of their NOTE GUM - uoer ‘ ’ ; • could be chewed if you were c fchjlp: g totes It came in cinnamon (f r hot JotejW d peppermint flavors. He worked as an adivsor to other foreign exchange students selling X-rated Homecoming speeches m foreign languages that Americans couldn't understand Tanya Thorstenson was also in the paper business. After years of picking up the absence slips at PHS. she had perfected a fingerprint paper that required each student's touch to sign in to a class. Jodi Lantz. former PHS office worker, perfected a duplicating machine that would duplicate copies of music by merely hearing the music played. She was aided in this venture by musician-mechanic Fred Magers. who was finally allowed to toot his own horn. Mike Flahaut. who bummed pencils and paper for years at PHS. was now the new recycle trash king I saw him hanging around the exhibits still bumming the free pencils that were being handed out. Laurie Withers had turned to real estate, turning a tradition at PHS into money. She now marketed Smoker's Hills for communities building new high schools. As I walked into another corner of the building, the exhibits got strangely weird. Hey. buddy — wanna buy some nuclear arms?” Yes. it was Mike Hari. But he was selling robot arms which ran on nuclear power He was joined by Bob King, who was selling nets to be used by the police for jumpers. The nets were a bright Cardinal red Julie Henderson and Jackie Meyer had started the new business Hire a Quiet . This was a firm that rented quiet people to come sit in your home as companions after a noisy day in the workplace. Glenn Lawson was rumored to be an agent for the CIA who did contract work for governments I heard him whisper. I overthrew everything in football — I can overthrow Lybia.” The next aisle was flooded with talk about cars. Suzie Shell was busy offering her car to anyone and everyone Car dealer Jim Lafray had brought samples of some of his top-line used cars Unfortunately, they were all part of the same car Chevy King Chad Riggle-man. a retired Air Force veteran, was demonstrating the virtues of the new military staff car he had designed Rebel Ford owner Chad Johnson, a professional drag racer, put up a challenge, while mechanic Kelly Swanson put the final tuning touches on Bryan SuHivan's experimental Volkswagen school bus as they all got set to race Scott Campbell's alcohol fueled hot car One of the cars flipped and we called for help from the inside Mark The Bull Stevenson. who had combined a professional wrestling career with farming, came outside for a look He decided that the whole mess should be plowed under As we left we saw Lori Kinney and Rod Emberson driving around in circles in the parking lot We thought they were testing some kind of new suspension system We all returned inside where Al Grigalunas. known for his cool, was repairing the air-conditioning around the stand of Amorous Amy's. Amy Ashmore ran a stand that blew up flowers and sent them to high school students from their loved ones. Lynette Wilken. who was once a cheerleader and aspiring vocalist. accompanied the flowers as a singing delivery person. Stacy Henson, who turned her love for soap opera into a career, recorded responses of those receiving the gifts on video tape and sold the dramas to television In the crafts section, former shop student. This year’s Varsity team had a successful season despite their six losses. The team opened up the season with losses to St. Joe-Ogden, Montlcello, Prairie Central, and came out on the short end of a 19-0 homecoming loss to Tuscola. It was not until the fifth game of the season when the Mustangs found the right comblnatlon-the winning combination. They ended the season winning three out of the last five games. The Iroquois West Raiders were the first of Paxton's victims. It was a close game that gave the Mustangs confidence and hope for a winning season. Scoring only the second touchdown of the year, we beat the Raiders 7-3. The next week the Mustangs traveled to Watseka. Watseka was the number one team In the conference. After getting down 12-0 In the first half, the Mustangs rallied to post a 14-12 victory. The next week Paxton traveled to Clifton to play the Comets. After two victories In a row, the Mustangs, with a win would have been 3-0 in the conference and In first place In the conference standings. But the Comets handed the Mustangs a 14-6 loss. Paxton redeemed themselves against the Cornjerkers from Hoopeston-East Lynn. Everyone got a chance to play In the most productive offensive game of the season. The Mustangs marked up theTr third win of the season, trouncing Hoopeston 30-0. On Halloween Night the Mighty Mustangs traveled to Gibson City to take on the Greyhounds. With a 3-5 record Paxton has a chance for a four way tie for the conference championship. The other three teams were Watseka, Iro-qulos West, and Prarie Central. It was a nail biter in which Gibson won 14-6. It was the first time In 10 years that the Greyhounds won the season finale. The loss left Paxton with a 3-6 record In the conference and a fourth place in the conference. After dropping games to tough Prairie Central and Gibson City teams, and wins over Iroquois West and Ford Central, the Paxton team traveled to the Clifton Holiday Tournament. The year had started to pick up, and It looked like the Mustangs were going to make a run at a good season. But only one win in the next five games made it look pretty dim. The high point of the season came after a win over Clifton Central. It was a home game against Watseka. The team seemed to be prepared for the game all week. Peters, Coplea, Blehl, and Miller all scored In double figures for the Mustangs, but the game was lost by seven points. The final blow came in the Regional Tournament when the boys lost to a Fisher team which they had beaten earlier In the year. First the letters ICE means Interrelated Cooperative Education. In many larger high schools the various areas are combined or interrelated into one group. It is also a cooperative effort between the student, school, and the employer for fhe educafion of fhe student. If all this is combined we have Interrelated Cooperative Education or ICE. This year there are 24 students presently involved in the Program at 20 various training stations. ICE students are also members of a youth organization called VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). The main event of the year was the Annual Appreciation Banquet. This banquet allowed the students the opportunity to show their thanks and apprecltion to their employer and everyone involved for all the help they have received throughout the year. The officers were: Amy Ashmore-President, Sandy Hofer-VIce President, Corey Miller-Secretary, Rod Emberson-Treasurer. V I C A 111 Y F U S T U D E N T 112 On August 9,1 flew Into Champaign. There they were, my new familyl I stayed with the Richard Douglas’. School started about 2 or 3 weeks later. It was a lot different than what I was used to. In Denmark we only have one school where all of the students go. The students here In Paxton were also a little different than what I was used to. In Denmark It's very difficult to be a new student. Here In Paxton It was so easy. Everybody knew me so I made friends pretty quick. In Denmark we don’t have cheerleaders like you have here. I think It is so fun that there are some people Jumping around In front of the audience cheering. You have a lot of fast food here. The only two places I already knew were Burger King and McDonalds. I liked this town and the people. They were so open and they always gave me time to talk and tried to help If they could. I will never forget this year and all the friends I have made. Their projects for the year included buying new flags, honoring feachers on National Teachers Day, and tutoring. Club members heard a variety of different speakers: who spoke at the fall induction, Kamelyn Johnson, who spoke at the spring Induction, and Judy Popel, who spoke at the May 15 banquet. Another day, another deadline. 3. Mrs. Frisbie — Sponsor. 4. Cris Zimmerman — Editor 5. Tom, busy at work. The 1986-87 Reflector staff was small and Inexperienced — we hope you can’t tell. As beginners, we had to learn all of the things one has to do In order to produce a yearbook — layout pages, fit copy, crop photos, and many other things. Mrs. Frisbie was again the advisor. She had to put up with moaning, groaning, and complaining from us, just as we had to put up with moaning, groaning, and complaining from her, but In the end, It all paid off. We made most of our deadlines and had a fun year to boot. This year was a first for many things. Mrs. Frisbie rewarded us with a can of soda pop for every two pages we completed before the deadlines. We also began a tradition of celebrating each staff member's birthday. Yes, being on the Reflector staff is hard work, but It Is also a lot of fun. We hope you enjoy the yearbook. Instead of doing just one two-hour play, the students performed three one-act plays. The three were: Actor’s Nightmare, Black Comedy, and The Bald Soprano. The whole production was called Comedy Tonight. The backstage crew consisted of student dlrector-Fred Magers, stage manager-Suzie Shell, props and costumes-Lau-rel Brown, and crew boss-JIm Lafray. Actor’s Nightmare was about a person’s greatest fear, having to get up In front of people and act without rehearsing. Black Comedy tells the story of a young couple having a dinner party during a blackout. The Bald Soprano is a story about a surrealistic dinner party- Front Row; Laurel Brown, Tara Young, Tim Harrison, Jodi Guyot, Suzle Shell, and Fred Magers.
