Predictions for the stars of 86 li was a strange night in the year 2006. I was restless so I arose and turned on my television. I was amazed at what I saw Everytime I turned channels there was some member of the Paxton High School Class of '86. CBS was carrying the Superbowl for the1 fortieth consecutive year and I managed to get a portion of the halftime interview with the L.A. Raiders' and Dallas Cowboys' bench captains — former PUS subs Wade Bleich and Mike Woolworth. Super-lawyer and agent Sonja Rawls an-nounted the retirement of longtime Bears' player Steve Nuss. When asked what he would do upon retirement, Nuss answered Firp. Sixty Minutes came on after the game. Longtime television personality and stan-dup comic Fd Fichner had replaced Mike Wallace as the main commentator. I found his interview with the world's quietest people to be quite a shock. Both were PHS grads — Kris Smith was professor of the Marsel Marceau School of Mime in Paris, while Amy Stevenson was a reading room librarian at the University of Illinois. Their vocabularies were loaded with words like sssh, and ''Quiet, please. later Fichner interviewed a woman who had survived for days in the Columbian jungles when her plane had crashed. She had survived on a shipment of cat food that had been aboard the plane — yes. it was Alice Batte. Flipping to Channel 17, WAND, I was just in time to hear an important message interrupt Family Fucd The U. S. Naval Fleet is moving into the Wrestlemania Lane where former tag team world champion wrestlers The Hush Puppies (Phil Hull and Rocky Marron) are holding three members of the 2004 gold medal Olympic basketball team — Jennifer Rheeling, Mary Kemmnetz, and Lynn Marshall for ransom. World fame counselor and negotiator Tim Rackley tried to bargain with pair, but they claimed they would only surrender if they could get a rematch with professional baseball player Brad Forsyth and Gatorade executive secretary Kristin Molck. It seems the pair had taken their title in an amateur night performance The bulletin went to advise that Marine Commandant Scott Foster had related that the U. S. Fleet, led by Admirals Dave Annis, Bill Warner, and Bill King, would lead the assault on the Omni in Atlanta Nuclear sub commander Vernon Rhodes, Jr. will provide backup. Be there. The network returned to Family fucd where I recognized the 12-member family of PHS grad Tammy Jinks doing battle with the 9-member family of former grad Mona Jones for a $10,000 prize and a new refrigerator supplied by hardware merchant Julia Muller. The knowledgeable Ken Schroeder, who was gifted at referring disputes in high school, had replaced longtime retired Richard Dawson as the show's host. Family Fucd was over and I turned to c hannel 2 Chicago for some good ole junk rerun viewing I was surprised to see blond blue-eyed Becky Lit wilier starring in K.N. for the Brady Bunch, the story of a nurse who took care of the 123 des-cendents of the original Bradys. Former PHS pals Darcy Eichelberger and Marla Burr had landed roles in a new laverne and Shirley spinoff about two girls growing into middleage in the 1990's. Joe Ember son had landed a role as Ed Norton the sewer worker turned plumber in The Now Honeymooncrs — Alice Goes to the Moon. ESPN, the sports network, was especially good tonight as it featured demolition derby driver Darren Gentzler hurdling his car over assistants Brian Jones’ and Matt Rubarts' four-wheel drive trucks, sponsored by Carrie Marshall Auto Sales, and seven cars enroute to a new record for totaling cars. The channel, also noted for unusual sports and athletic activities also featured --- Marathoners Leanna McClure, Shelley Thompson, and James Duff won the top prize money in the Paxton's 4-mile Fourth Run when they refused to admit they were eligible for the 35 and older category. ---Special coverage was given to the sport of skipping where pairs gold medalists Lisa VanLaningham and Mark Johnson prepared to take on defending champs Gina SancJige and Stephanie Basia The event was a washout when one group failed to show. ---An added attraction was motorcyle ski lumping performed on the ski sloped of Loda where Loda Mayor Bev Monroe welc omed trick rider Brenda Sheehan of the Harley Mommas. — Dave Vibbert and Jeff Schrodt returned from the World Bass Tournament Competition toco-host their new fishing show Dangling in the Water. Always a sports junkie, I turned to WGN ( hannel 9 — the Chicago Cubs network. Cub announcer Doug Rinken-berger was featured in a re-run interview with St. Louis Cardinals co-owners Phil Jarboe and Scott Niccum. Niccum, a well-known rabbit breeder, was considering changing the team's name to Bunnies New Cub manager Larry Haile, in the throes of a 17-game losing streak, stopped by during a rain delay in the Cubs' double-header loss. Deana Riley, the always smiling public relations director tor the cellar-dwelling Chicago Bears, dropped by to say, Wait until next year Physical therapist Staci Vest, who came along with Riley, reported she was working to reduce all-star veteran William Meat Locker Perry back down to refrigerator size. Dave dampitt, a former bench tri-captain at PHS. showed up to model his new improving line of Refrigerator Clothes. Fnough was enough; I needed a change — I needed something intellectual I turned to WILL, the public television station. I was surprized to see French Chef Mt. Tim (Tim Birch) interviewing pizza delivery kings Pat Livermore and Randy Westmoreland about their new school product PI7ZA BLOATS. Former fast food waitresses Melinda Frichtl and Kim Howe, now professional caterers, brought samples of the product in a truck provided by long distance hauler Dennis Glad. One of the Bloats escaped and threatened to devour Mr. Tim's studio audience until professional screamer Deanne Mize, a former PHS drum major commanded it to return to its seat. Later on, world class pianist Adrienne Silence accompanied comic flutist, and regional director Buddy Ronna lectured about how to pass high school rhetoric. Engineer Craig Hadden and architect Jim Arends, still eligible bachelors, joined Nobel prize winning mafhemeticlan Lisa Anderson to discuss the problems in re-renovating the Statue of Liberty. They showed their documentary film, Reshaping the Female Form. Other Features included Swedish translations of the speeches of King Gustav the XX XX by Ingcgcrd Erickson and German Language expert Keith Heintzle-man's translations of Falco Songs. Secretaries Juanita DeLaCruz, Trina Kidd, and Suzy Price appeared to talk about their new shorthancJ bestseller Kiddin' and Cruzing for a Price. I grew weary of the channel and started to turn, but I was intrigued by what I saw next. Two women looking through mirrors WITHOUT GLASS chanting and I see little It was Joy Faulk- ner and Christy Miller with their own updated version of the ever popular ROMPFR ROOM Looking for a comedown from all this intellcctualism, I quickly found MTV. It hadn't changed much inthe past few years. Former WPXN disc jockey Alecia Starkey, now a video producer, had teammed with stereo equipment genius Matt Bever to produce two new hits that were featured. First there was Chad Duncan appearing in his vocal debut as the fifth Beatle. Break Dancing whiz and computer ace Chris Johnson followed with Computer Jivin’. Tina Guillaume, well-known restaurant owner and night club hostess, introduced the hottest new overseas video from her homeland Hawaii — former PHS grad Lori Valentine singing Don Ho is Alive and Well. Hot new D. J. Tim French introduced the top twenty video hits: including the Joan Rivers replacement Tracy Hofer doing a routine from her new Down and Dirty album. The Nashville Network had more of the same, Good ole boys Doug Langley and Matt Bachman were singing Hank Junior songs and selling Skoal as co-hosts of Nashville Tonight The pair welcomed former Tennesseean and classmate Steve Patrick until they found out he was currently managing Prince's new act. Truck plaza owner Ken Massey came on the show to talk about truckin' songs and singer Denise Hudson gave her rendition of Big Wheels are Moving The Arts and Fntertainment Network offered relief from the twangy accents and allowed some sophisticated New York entertainment. New York social columnist and critic Robin Richardson panned actress Carrie Collins' Oscar award winning performance. Miss Collins had teammed with former Gentleman's Quarterly models Joe Grayson and Doug Green in the noted film director Traci Griffen's The Odd Couple Drinks Perrier Water. Certified Public Accountant Terri Merkle gave a talk about why the movies were losing money and set builder Roger Adkins spoke about building the set for Star Wars XX — The jedi Meets Rocky. I had enough. I couldn't take anymore. I turned the television off. It faded to black all except one little spot. It looked like a person in the center of the screen. I thought I recognized the little goatee, the glasses, the slightly thinning hair. Nah. It couldn't be — not after twenty years since we were the class of 86. Surely HE couldn't still be alive.
