Sichner Prian Kay fanes Carrie Petit Marshall Deanna Kuth McClure Peverly fall Monroe Predictions for the stars of 86 li was a strange night in the year 2006. I was restless so I arose and turned on my television. I was amazed at what I saw Everytime I turned channels there was some member of the Paxton High School Class of '86. CBS was carrying the Superbowl for the1 fortieth consecutive year and I managed to get a portion of the halftime interview with the L.A. Raiders' and Dallas Cowboys' bench captains — former PUS subs Wade Bleich and Mike Woolworth. Super-lawyer and agent Sonja Rawls an-nounted the retirement of longtime Bears' player Steve Nuss. When asked what he would do upon retirement, Nuss answered Firp. Sixty Minutes came on after the game. Longtime television personality and stan-dup comic Fd Fichner had replaced Mike Wallace as the main commentator. I found his interview with the world's quietest people to be quite a shock. Both were PHS grads — Kris Smith was professor of the Marsel Marceau School of Mime in Paris, while Amy Stevenson was a reading room librarian at the University of Illinois. Their vocabularies were loaded with words like sssh, and ''Quiet, please. later Fichner interviewed a woman who had survived for days in the Columbian jungles when her plane had crashed. She had survived on a shipment of cat food that had been aboard the plane — yes. it was Alice Batte. Flipping to Channel 17, WAND, I was just in time to hear an important message interrupt Family Fucd The U. S. Naval Fleet is moving into the Wrestlemania Lane where former tag team world champion wrestlers The Hush Puppies (Phil Hull and Rocky Marron) are holding three members of the 2004 gold medal Olympic basketball team — Jennifer Rheeling, Mary Kemmnetz, and Lynn Marshall for ransom. World fame counselor and negotiator Tim Rackley tried to bargain with pair, but they claimed they would only surrender if they could get a rematch with professional baseball player Brad Forsyth and Gatorade executive secretary Kristin Molck. It seems the pair had taken their title in an amateur night performance The bulletin went to advise that Marine Commandant Scott Foster had related that the U. S. Fleet, led by Admirals Dave Annis, Bill Warner, and Bill King, would lead the assault on the Omni in Atlanta Nuclear sub commander Vernon Rhodes, Jr. will provide backup. Be there. The network returned to Family fucd where I recognized the 12-member family of PHS grad Tammy Jinks doing battle with the 9-member family of former grad Mona Jones for a $10,000 prize and a new refrigerator supplied by hardware merchant Julia Muller. The knowledgeable Ken Schroeder, who was gifted at referring disputes in high school, had replaced longtime retired Richard Dawson as the show's host. Family Fucd was over and I turned to c hannel 2 Chicago for some good ole junk rerun viewing I was surprised to see blond blue-eyed Becky Lit wilier starring in K.N. for the Brady Bunch, the story of a nurse who took care of the 123 des-cendents of the original Bradys. Former PHS pals Darcy Eichelberger and Marla Burr had landed roles in a new laverne and Shirley spinoff about two girls growing into middleage in the 1990's. Joe Ember son had landed a role as Ed Norton the sewer worker turned plumber in The Now Honeymooncrs — Alice Goes to the Moon. ESPN, the sports network, was especially good tonight as it featured demolition derby driver Darren Gentzler hurdling his car over assistants Brian Jones’ and Matt Rubarts' four-wheel drive trucks, sponsored by Carrie Marshall Auto Sales, and seven cars enroute to a new record for totaling cars. The channel, also noted for unusual sports and athletic activities also featured --- Marathoners Leanna McClure, Shelley Thompson, and James Duff won the top prize money in the Paxton's 4-mile Fourth Run when they refused to admit they were eligible for the 35 and older category. ---Special coverage was given to the sport of skipping where pairs gold medalists Lisa VanLaningham and Mark Johnson prepared to take on defending champs Gina SancJige and Stephanie Basia The event was a washout when one group failed to show. ---An added attraction was motorcyle ski lumping performed on the ski sloped of Loda where Loda Mayor Bev Monroe welc omed trick rider Brenda Sheehan of the Harley Mommas. — Dave Vibbert and Jeff Schrodt returned from the World Bass Tournament Competition toco-host their new fishing show Dangling in the Water. Always a sports junkie, I turned to WGN ( hannel 9 — the Chicago Cubs network. Cub announcer Doug Rinken-berger was featured in a re-run interview with St. Louis Cardinals co-owners Phil Jarboe and Scott Niccum. Niccum, a well-known rabbit breeder, was considering changing the team's name to Bunnies New Cub manager Larry Haile, in the throes of a 17-game losing streak, stopped by during a rain delay in the Cubs' double-header loss. Deana Riley, the always smiling public relations director tor the cellar-dwelling Chicago Bears, dropped by to say, Wait until next year Physical therapist Staci Vest, who came along with Riley, reported she was working to reduce all-star veteran William Meat Locker Perry back down to refrigerator size. Dave dampitt, a former bench tri-captain at PHS. showed up to model his new improving line of Refrigerator Clothes. Fnough was enough; I needed a change — I needed something intellectual I turned to WILL, the public television station. I was surprized to see French Chef Mt. Tim (Tim Birch) interviewing pizza delivery kings Pat Livermore and Randy Westmoreland about their new school product PI7ZA BLOATS. Former fast food waitresses Melinda Frichtl and Kim Howe, now professional caterers, brought samples of the product in a truck provided by long distance hauler Dennis Glad. One of the Bloats escaped and threatened to devour Mr. Tim's studio audience until professional screamer Deanne Mize, a former PHS drum major commanded it to return to its seat. Later on, world class pianist Adrienne Silence accompanied comic flutist, and regional director Buddy Ronna lectured about how to pass high school rhetoric. Engineer Craig Hadden and architect Jim Arends, still eligible bachelors, joined Nobel prize winning mafhemeticlan Lisa Anderson to discuss the problems in re-renovating the Statue of Liberty. They showed their documentary film, Reshaping the Female Form. Other Features included Swedish translations of the speeches of King Gustav the XX XX by Ingcgcrd Erickson and German Language expert Keith Heintzle-man's translations of Falco Songs. Secretaries Juanita DeLaCruz, Trina Kidd, and Suzy Price appeared to talk about their new shorthancJ bestseller Kiddin' and Cruzing for a Price. I grew weary of the channel and started to turn, but I was intrigued by what I saw next. Two women looking through mirrors WITHOUT GLASS chanting and I see little It was Joy Faulk- ner and Christy Miller with their own updated version of the ever popular ROMPFR ROOM Looking for a comedown from all this intellcctualism, I quickly found MTV. It hadn't changed much inthe past few years. Former WPXN disc jockey Alecia Starkey, now a video producer, had teammed with stereo equipment genius Matt Bever to produce two new hits that were featured. First there was Chad Duncan appearing in his vocal debut as the fifth Beatle. Break Dancing whiz and computer ace Chris Johnson followed with Computer Jivin’. Tina Guillaume, well-known restaurant owner and night club hostess, introduced the hottest new overseas video from her homeland Hawaii — former PHS grad Lori Valentine singing Don Ho is Alive and Well. Hot new D. J. Tim French introduced the top twenty video hits: including the Joan Rivers replacement Tracy Hofer doing a routine from her new Down and Dirty album. The Nashville Network had more of the same, Good ole boys Doug Langley and Matt Bachman were singing Hank Junior songs and selling Skoal as co-hosts of Nashville Tonight The pair welcomed former Tennesseean and classmate Steve Patrick until they found out he was currently managing Prince's new act. Truck plaza owner Ken Massey came on the show to talk about truckin' songs and singer Denise Hudson gave her rendition of Big Wheels are Moving The Arts and Fntertainment Network offered relief from the twangy accents and allowed some sophisticated New York entertainment. New York social columnist and critic Robin Richardson panned actress Carrie Collins' Oscar award winning performance. Miss Collins had teammed with former Gentleman's Quarterly models Joe Grayson and Doug Green in the noted film director Traci Griffen's The Odd Couple Drinks Perrier Water. Certified Public Accountant Terri Merkle gave a talk about why the movies were losing money and set builder Roger Adkins spoke about building the set for Star Wars XX — The jedi Meets Rocky. I had enough. I couldn't take anymore. I turned the television off. It faded to black all except one little spot. It looked like a person in the center of the screen. I thought I recognized the little goatee, the glasses, the slightly thinning hair. Nah. It couldn't be — not after twenty years since we were the class of 86. Surely HE couldn't still be alive. Paxton looked like a contender for the 2A crown. The Mustangs opened their season with the route of St. Joe Ogden and a victory over Monti-cello. The third game however was a setback as Paxton fell to Princeville in a close game. The Mustangs then traveled to Tuscola where they won a nailbiter. Paxton marched on the field at Gilman for the first conference game. Iroquois West fell to what looked like a new Paxton team. Steve Nuss carried the ball for 275 yards and a new Mustang record. Watseka was the next victim at Paxton's Homecoming. Paxton then suffered another setback when last years' conference champs, Clifton Central, came to town and left with a victory. Paxton was on the road again to Hoo-peston where the Mustangs ripped the winless Cornjerkers. The season finale was with arch rival Gibson City. If Paxton won, they would be in a three way tie for the conference championship and earn a playoff berth. If they lost, the season would be over. Paxton emerged victorious and tied for the championship as well as earning a playoff berth. FOOTBALL 6. FOOTBALL 55 All the right moves at the playoffs The Paxton Mustangs sneaked into the playoffs with a 7-2 season. It looked as if the Mustangs wouldn't make it, but they pulled it off with a victory over Gibson City in the regular season. The Mustangs played Bismark-Henning in the first round of the playoffs. B-H had a high powered offensive attack that surprised Paxton at first, but B-H scored their one and only touchdown on their first drive. Paxton scored 39 total points to win the game 39-8. Paxton's next opponent was Gibson City. G-C marched on the field with revenge in mind, but Paxton would not be denied. The Mustangs scored early and came out on top 21-14. The strange thing about this game is the Mustangs played G-C only eight days before, with a comparable score. Ottawa-Marqutte Paxton's next opponent was a big team. As the teams marched on the field it began to rain, turning the already muddy field into a swamp. Ottawa got on the board first with a touchdown, following a Paxton fumble. The extra point failed. Paxton answered with two field goals to tie the game 6-6 at the half. The second half was a muddy battle with the regulation time running out, and the score remaining tied. The game went into overtime. Ottawa scored on fourth and eleven, and then made the two point conversion. Paxton couldn't make it over the goal, and the game ended 14-6. The Mustangs finished the season with a 9-3 record. The 1986 Reflector staff would like to extend its thanks to the Paxton Booster Club for the money they gave for the extra pages for the football playoffs. S6 PLAYOFFS 1. Stt PIAYOFFS JV football The Paxton Mustang Junior Varsity football team had a winless season. Coach Zick said that the record meant nothing to the fact that the team improved in many ways all season. After position changes, the team began to work harder and work more as a team. Coach Zick said that although they didn't win any games, the team kept up a great spirit, and gave all they had into playing the games. The highlight of the season was when the little Mustangs almost beat undefeated Hoopeston. Coach Zick said that many players are going to contribute greatly to the upcoming Varsity squad. 1. The mothers gave strong support for the team this year, always striving to get their spirits up for the game by decorating the halls, presenting flowers, and giving pizza parties. Dressing up and giving goody bags to the team members also contributed to the mothers making this a very special season. The spirited seniors were always trying new ideas to get the team fired up, such as wearing hats or giving flowers to sisters and mothers. When the team got down the seniors along with other team members worked at getting the spirit back. They were leaders on and off the floor, always willing to try anything to make us better. Seniors Kristin Molck, Lynn Marshall, Tracy Hofer, and Jennifer Rheeling performed a volleyball season to remember and provided the experience to inspire the team for next year. The Monticello match and the second Watseka match were outstanding performances for the team, along with the Mahomet-Seymour match and the come back from a 2-15 first game loss to defeat Hoopeston East-Lynn 15-6 and 15-4. The scorekeeper this year was Tammy Jinks. The statisticians were Becky Bixby, Bonnie Foster, and Sonja Rawls. Itt VOW- 1. Julie Henderson in action. 2. Debbi bumps toward victory. 3. I've got it! 4. The boys tied the school record for fewest losses in a dual season with a 10-2 mark. The boys were very successful at the Conference meet. Craig Ka-vajecz captured first place in the Frosh-Soph Division. Four members of the varsity were named All-Conference. James Duff, Tim Rackley, Doug Rinkenberger, and Tim Harrison received 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th places respectively. These four runners were known as the pack throughout the 1985 season. They always worked together to achieve team victories. At a meet against Cissna Park and Clifton, the pack crossed the finish line together, capturing the four first places and winning the meet, with a time of 17:28 on the Paxton course. The boy's team was rated 19th and 20th in the state. They used solid pack running to capture the Unity Regional Title. The Mustangs scored 66 pts. to edge Mon-ticello and win the second regional title in school history. At the sectional meet, the Mustangs placed 9th as a team, scoring 223 pts. in the rain plagued meet over a rough, hilly course at lllini Meadows. During the 1985 season, James Duff crossed the 2000 mile mark for his career and Tim Harrison crossed the 1000 mile mark. Coach Guyot was unable to choose a most improved runner because all of the runners had a great season and improved a lot. James Duff was named Most Valuable Runner. BOY'S CROSS COUNTRY 1. An unscored win over Clifton Central at the season's mid-point helped in reaching Coach Guyot's 200th career dual meet victory. In conference action, the Mustangs placed four girls in the top ten, to dominate the unscored meet held at a park in Hoopeston. Conference champion, Susan Meyer and runner-up freshman Nikki Riggleman were All-Conference runners along with Senior Becky Litwiller who placed fifth. Senior Lisa Anderson was named Honorable Mention with a ninth place finish. At a touch Decator Regional, the Paxton girl's placed eighth behind strong placings up front. Three four year letter winners graduating will be co-captains LeAnna McClure and Shelley Thompson and Mary Kemnetz. Lisa Anderson was named Most Improved and Susan Meyer was named Most Valuable. GIRL'S CROSS COUNTRY Fast Break The 1985-86 boys basketball season was something special. The Mustangs ended the season with a 14-10 record. The Mustangs season was special in that it was the only winning team since 1971. The major highlights of the season were beating Gibson City twice, beating Cissna Park, Flanagan, and Clifton Central, and also finished third in the Lexington Tourney. Other thrills of the season were when Phil Hull, Brad Forsyth, and Steve Patrick made the all conference team, and Phill Hull making the all state honorable mention. The biggest dissappointment of the season was not winning the Regional tourney. After a 2-4 start the Mustangs Iwon 12 of the next 18 games, including a stretch of 6 out of 7 | games. Steve Patrick had 74 steals 78 (assists and 23 blocked shots that [provided constant excitement in [the games. Brad Forsyth hit at 24 [foot a 50%clip and he dished out 194 assists. A picture perfect season As in previous years, the Lady Mustangs varsity basketball squad completed the season in excellent standings, finishing on top in the Wauseca Conference with a 10-0 record and posting an overall record of 19-3. Starting the season slow with two early losses, one to Prairie Central in the Cissna Park Holiday Tournament when the Lady Mustangs finished in third place and the other to Ford Central in the home opener, the squad rolled on to win a school record of 18 games in a row, before they were defeated in a heartbreaking Regional Championship game against Milford. Highlighting the season were victories over conference foes Gibson City and Hoopeston E-L in close games, and a win over the Monticello Sages on their home court. Senior Jennifer Rheeling was the second choice to the All-Conference team while her classmates, Lynn Marshall and Kristen Molck were the fourth and fifth picks to the team. Juniors Julie Abel and Debbi Short were named Honorable Mention. ■70 GIRL'S BASKETBALL 1. Although the season wasn't a successful one. The team kept up the spirit, and they will contribute greatly to next years up and coming varsity squad. 72 JV BASKETBALL one short of perfect After starting the season off with a disappointing three point loss in the season's home opener to Ford Central, the Lady Mustangs JV squad went through the remaining nineteen games undefeated. Being led by a strong squad of five returning sophomores, Karla Hartz, Audra Hull, Michelle Marshall, Susan Meyer and Tina Vest, the impressive shooting ability of freshman Jodi Forsyth, and a large group of energetic freshman, the squad went through the season defeating nearly everyone in wide point spread games. The squad highlighted the season by holding on in tight games to beat conference rival Gibson City, and by coming out victorious in close games over St. Joeseph-Ogden and Monticello. In the Hoopeston E-L JV Tournament, the JV Lady Mustangs walked over Watseka in first round action, advancing themselves to the Championship game, where they beat Rossville-Alvin for the title and the Championship trophy. The underdog Mustangs used shot and discus wins by Phil Hull, an 800 meter win by Brad Forsyth, a 110 high hurdle victory by Darren Gentzler, and a triple jump win by Forsyth to edge four-time defending champion Watseka 125V6-121. Hull, who threw the discus a school-record 174-1 in the conference meet, advanced to the state meet in the shot and discus, while Gentzler, the sectional titlist in the high hurdles, also advanced. Early in the season, the Mustangs had won the Class B division of the St. Anne Relays, finished second in the Ford County, fifth in the Dwight Invitational, and sixth in the St. Joseph- Ogden Spartan Classic. Seniors Hull, Forsyth, Gentzler, and shot putter Steve Nuss, and Distancemen Tim Rackley, Craig Hadden, James Duff, and Doug Rinkenberger will all graduate from the Mustangs 1986 team. Two new events were added this year, the 300 low hurdles and the 3200 M. Relay. Tammy Dep-tula ran a 1:00.5 in the sectional meet to set the new school record, while the 3200 M. Relay team of Senior Kristin Molck, Sophomore Susan Meyer, and Seniors Lisa Anderson and Shelley Thompson set and broke the record several times before lowering the time to 10:27.7, respectively. Kristin Molck broke the 800 M. Run record, set by Robyn Thompson in 1982, by turning in a time of 2:27.4 at the News Gazette Honor Roll in Mahomet where she placed second, defeating some of the areas top runners. Junior Julie Abel had another fine season, ending with her second trip to the Illinois Girl's State Class A Finals in the discus. Along the way she won many dual meets, the Lady Greyhound Classic, the Wauseca Conference title in both the shot and the discus, the Mahomet sectional and the News Gazette Honor Roll Meet. The 3200 M. Relay team also won the Conference title. This squad also qualified for the Gazette and Panagraph meets. Other team members who are being lost to graduation are two-miler Becky Litwiller and shot puter and discus thrower Mary Kemnetz. Others hopefully returning next year include junior 800 runner Leigh White, sophomore sprinters Tammy Deptula, Karla Hartz and Stephanie Kidd, and sophomore Audra Hull who had a strong showing this year in the shot put and discus. The band started off the marching season with an impressive win at Georgetown, sweeping all awards, and bringing home the Grand Champion trophy. Other first place awards were first place in parade, best flags and best percussion at the U. of I. competition, and first place at the Gibson City Labor Day Parade. The brigade also hosted their own invitational for the first year, where they performed in exibi-tion. Memories from this year's season which will always be remembered were getting food poisoning at the Daville competition, being left by the bus in Champaign, and getting struck in the mud at the Ottawa Marquette football game. 1. During that week the FFA presented a program for the third grade and the eight grade. On another day the members took The Barnyard on Wheels to various locations. On Friday, the FFA held an Open House in the Ag Shop, and on Saturday, they held and All You Can Eat Pancake, Sausage and Egg Breakfast . In that one day they raised over two-hundred dollars from the breakfast alone. Members worked together to grow a garden that measured 65 ft. by 172 ft. The garden supplied food to over 60 low-income families, and to over 60 residents of the Ford County Nursing Home. For this help, the Paxton FFA received an award of appreciation from the Department of Wheatherization. The award was received for making the FFA garden such a success. The council planned a Homecoming Activity Week in association with the cheerleaders. On Valentines' Day the students took part in a King Queen of Hearts contest. Student council sponsored the Homecoming dance, along with the Multi-media three screen movie. Over-all the council had a great year with two afternoon meetings, a weekend ski trip to Wisconsin, and the ice skating party of U of I. Members put in alot of hard work and effort to organize the teacher, student, athlete, and student council members of the week. The main goal of Student Council was to make the students enjoy the atmosphere of school better. A group of three student council members processed a Student Council Newsletter to provide students with more information on school and current events. Jennifer Rheeling, Sue Meyer, and Dave Skoog put many numerous hours in on the newspaper, which is now a permanent activity and will be sponsored by Mr. Harber next year. Not pictured: Mr. Rundquist, Sponsor. Ingregred Eriksson's home is in Alingas, Sweden. She visited Paxton through the Youth for Understanding Program and stayed with the Lit wilier family. Ingregerd quickly received many nicknames since her real name was so hard to pronounce. They included, Ingrid, Ingy, Fred, and many others. Ingegerd caught on to the American ways very quickly, but some things seemed really different to her. She liked the school because of its small size and the closeness of the students and teachers. Ingegerd was a very fun-loving person. She enjoyed the variety of TV Shows, commercials, and radio stations since these are controlled by the government in Sweden. She also enjoyed canoeing, water-skiing, water slides, and of course snow skiing. We wish her the best of luck as she goes back to Sweden. This year in Paxton has been such an interesting experience. Everything is new and different. Now, when I look back, I'm so glad I came. I love the people here. Everybody is so open and it's easy to make contact with new people. American people are fun to be around. It has been hard to speak English all the time, but I'm so glad everybody is patient with me. You've taken time to listen to me. I'm coming from a school with about 2000 students. There you hardly know anybody. This school is nice because everybody knows everybody. It seems like people here are more willing to learn and study. The contact between teachers and students is great here. Teachers take time to listen to students, whatever they want to say. Teachers give up some free time even after school to spend with the students. I've really enjoyed the teachers here. They have helped me a lot and made me feel more at home. The schoolspirit is great. It's so fun to see the cheerleaders cheering for the different teams. We don't have any cheerleaders in our Swedish schools and after school is over in the afternoon, everybody goes home. I loved the American football season. Everybody cheered for the team, came to the games. You even have a fight song . The big sport in Sweden is soccer. We don't have football. Another sport that I saw for the first time was softball (as everyone could tell!) I can't believe how many different television shows you have! In Sweden we only have two stations with a few TV-shows. Commercials are new for me too. The Americans can't understand me when I tell them I like commercials. I would probably get tired of them if we had them all the time too. It was nice to stay with another family for a year, see how they live and learn their customs. The family I stayed with, the Litwillers, is really nice. We had so much in common and had a lot of fun together. I really appreciate all the time they spent with me. You have many kinds of junk food that I hadn't tasted before I came to America. It took time before I got used to the new foods, but it's always fun to try new things. I was lucky I came to Paxton since it once was a Swedish settlement. It makes me feel more at home when I go up town and see the Swedish names, like Larson's and Carlson's, on the stores. You even have a Swedish gift shop. I'm glad I took the opportunity to come here and spend a year with you. I've learned so much. It's so fun to meet new people. I want to thank everybody for making this year so special to me. I'll never forget it. I hope I'll be able to come back and visit you soon again. O' j YOUTH FOR UNDERSTANDING 99 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 1 I I I I I 1 1 I I I I Behind the scenes of NHS There were nine National Honor Society members at the beginning of the year. In the fall eleven new members were inducted. At the annual spring induction nine more members were inducted. Twenty-nine is the largest group NHS has had in many years. This year all NHS correspondence was typed and stored on computer discs. NHS had a variety of service projects this year. They include tutoring, honoring teachers on National Teachers' Day, initiating SADD, collecting funds for the Cancer Society Drive, honoring students who excel in academics, holding bake sales to raise money for the NHS scholarship, and purchasing new flags for classrooms. Because of the inexperience of the staff the work began slow; but the staff caught on quickly to the making of a yearbook. Tyler Hill did an exceptional job taking pictures using his own equipment. Sue Meyer and Gina San-dige were the back bone members of the staff. Coeditors Kim Howe and Buddy Ronna did a great job of organizing the book. The book has a movie theme of You ought to be in pictures that was carried out throughout the book. The book's cover design has never been done in the history of PHS. This year has been a year of many creative ideas and changes. Top: First semester staff: Mrs. Frisbie, sponsor, Kim Howe, Sue Meyer, Becky Litwiller, Buddy Ronna, Candi Hofer, Tyler Hill.
