As usual, it rained before the parade started. The float theme this year was class subjects. The freshmen chose agriculture as their subject, with the saying, “Plow em' Under . The sophomores chose history as their subject, and made “Warriors Last Stand their saying. The juniors, choosing chemistry as their subject, had “Mustang Reaction as their saying. The seniors had a hayrack with cardboard signs saying, “We thought homecoming was next week. The sophomores won first place, the juniors and freshmen tied for second, and the seniors received fourth place. The homecoming pep assembly opened up with the cheerleaders doing a routine to the song “I Like That Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Segar. The routine was put together by Jill Weisenbarn. After the routine, the cheerleaders performed a fifties cheer with letter sweaters on. It was announced that the seniors won hall decorations. 58 Spirit Week for Homecoming was a lot of fun this year. School was not in session on Monday because of Columbus Day, so Spirit Week began on Tuesday, October 11th. Tuesday was mini Day. Most everyone got into the spirit. They wore hats, jackets, and t-shirts. Some girls even painted their faces. We began to think that our school colors were orange and blue. Wednesday was Sports Day. Many people dressed up as football, cross-country, and volleyball players. Others just wore their sweats. Thursday was Formal Day. Most girls wore dresses or skirts. There were a few girls that actually wore formats. A couple of guys wore suits and Thad Hill wore a tuxedo. Friday was the traditional Blue and Gold and Hat Day. Students wore blue jeans and yellow or gold shirts. Many wore their sports uniforms. Hats ranged from cowboy hats to baseball caps and beanies. Thursday was junior Punk Day. The juniors went all the way. The girls streaked their hair in odd assortments of color. Their make-up and outfits went right along with their hairstyles. They could fit right in with real punkers. Thursday night was the traditional bon fire and the Warrior dummy was thown in. Friday, student council members came together to decorate for the homecoming dance. 61 Friday, October 14, the Mustangs lost the most disappointing game of the season. The score was 8 to 6 at half-time of the Homecoming game. The Mustang team scored their other touchdown in the third quarter. The extra point was no good. The Warrior’s tieing touchdown was made with a little more than a minute left in the third. Their two-point conversion was good. No touchdowns or extra points were scored in the fourth quarter. At the end of the game, the score was tied 14 to 14. Both teams failed to get the ball over the line in an overtime attempt. Paxton went on the offense first. Then the two teams went to the east side of the field to try again. Brad Forsyth threw a pass to Rob Reber in the far left corner of the end zone to put the Mustangs on top 20-14. The try for the conversion failed. It took Watseka four tries to cross the line before Watseka running back caught a pass. Watseka's try for two was no good because the ball was caught out of bounds. In the third overtime, Paxton lost three yards. Four other attempts were made with no avail, when Alper Kizar was in. His field goal attempt short and to the left. The Warriors had yet another chance to score. On the first down the quarterback found a hole, ran to the one yard line, and fell over for the touchdown. 63 64 THE DANCE The Homecoming dance this year took place on Friday, October 14, 1983. Tradition was changed this year because the dance took place after the game. This was to encourage more alumni to come to the dance. Due to the game going into triple overtime, the hours of the dance were extended because many people arrived late. Music was by the band CHAOS. At 11:00, the coronation took place. The underclassmen attendants were: freshmen Kara Hartz and Tim Harrison; sophomores Carrie Marshall and Matt Ru-barts; and juniors Ursula Roncevich and Mike Batte. The theme was “We've got tonight, and the music by the Don Morris Band. The decorations were stars and clouds of blue and silver, and burning candles as lighting. The juniors would like to corn-men and thank Ms. Hoffman for her continued support. The Mustangs defeated Westville, Hoopeston, and Gibson City. They were defeated by Mahomet, Monticello, Danville-Schlarman, Georgetown, Clifton, and to Watseka in three overtimes at Homecoming. The first thing the band performed in was not a competition. The band marched at the Cissa Park Centennial Parade in coincidentally 100 degree weather. The band competed in two different events on the same day; first at Eastern Illinois University and then at the Conference Invitational at Georgetown. The funny thing about it though, was that about everyone thought that the band performed poorly at EIU and much better at Georgetown and then ended up winning more awards at EIU than at Georgetown. This year the band purchased a new trailer for carrying uniforms. instruments, and equipment. The band has been honored by being able to perform at the Indianapolis 500 parade during Memorial Day weekend. Even though its been a good year, there were a few problems such as the uniforms being too short or too small, or being too hot and thirsty, or being tired from getting up too early. The NHS began the year with only two members, but they inducted twice and it raised the membership to twelve. The NHS held their inductions in the library with their parents present. During the year, they took a trip to the University of Illinois, sold merchandise, tutored students, and held a Teacher Appreciation Day. At the end of the year, the annual banquet honored the students with a potluck and presented letters. New officers were installed. Clockwise: Melanie Kautmann, Kim Short. The 1983-84 club members feel they have fulfilled their obligation, for if they brought happiness to one person during this year, they have been successful. Traveling as a well behaved group has always been a requirement to becoming a member. Another requirement is to pay dues. The members go on trips to the nursing homes-playing games and awarding gifts hoping to bring good cheer. At fall registration, one dollar of the student registration fee helps finance the paper. This year the Blue and Gold was published by Stevens Printing. In the past years the paper had been xeroxed in the high school office. Going to a regular newspaper format presented some problems. Because of financial limitations, only three papers were printed. Also, the size of the staff was a hinderance. Special thanks should be given to those who contributed articles to the paper. Their time and effort was greatly appreciated. 1- Working for Student Council 2- Melanie and friends 3- Homecoming Parade 4- Melanie and her host parents Mr. and Mrs. Terry Shaffer Melanie Kaufmann was visiting PHS through the Youth for Understanding program. She lives in West Germany, and this year she lived with the Terry and Jackie Shaffer family. YFU sponsors students to go to other countries for one year. During a student’s stay here, they are invited to participate in activities sponsored by an area YFU organization. They have cook-outs and stay-overs where the foreign exchange students can get together and share their experiences. Also, the student is encouraged to get involved in their local school and community. Although German schools do not sponsor school sports. Melanie does participate in such sports as skiing, tennis, and volleyball. Early in the year the AFS adopted her and showed her the ropes. The National Honor Society initiated her at their first induction of the year. Melanie also participated in Speech. At one of the speech meets a judge wrote. “ You need to practice your German accent more. One of the highlights of Melanie's year here was when she was elected Homecoming Queen. Melanie is well known and a true friend to many people in her class and in the whole Paxton community. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Front Row: 1 Magers- Treasurer. M. Stevenson-President Second Row: D. Cheryl Patterson Unity the Key to Success was the theme to the District Convention hosted by Paxton High School Student Council, but really it was the theme of the year 1983-84. Starting out the year with a new advisor was difficult, but soon everyone realized that if they banned together they could be a success. In early September the work began on Homecoming. Tradition was broken when the annual dance was planned for after the big game. A stroke of bad luck hit when the game went into triple overtime, cutting the time for the dance down to a minimum. Soon after Homecoming, the executive board decided to begin holding Wednesday morning board meetings to get organized for the Thursday morning meetings. Both the board and Mr. Harber agreed these meetings were a great asset to the overall success of Student Council this year. In November PHS Student Council hosted the fall workshop for Kickapoo District and sponsored an assembly to view Free Fare and the Air Force Band. Early in January the plans began for a Fresh-Soph dance. It was a first of its kind, semi-formal attire, entertainment by a disc jockey, and an immense amount of fun. Also in January, plans began for the District Convention to be held March 24 and hosted by PHS Student Council at the Ftamada Inn Convention Center in Champaign. Early in March, Camfield Productions were hired by Student Council to show the three screen demonstration sponsored by Campus Life. March 24 came quickly, and the convention was a success. The members of PHS Student Council truly learned that Unity is the Key to Success, especially on last minute details. PHS Student Council was congratulated by all and thanked by KDASC. The members of Student Council ■ were pleased to be able to honor Mr. Fred Guyot as a Master Teacher on Friday, March 23. PHS hosted students from Armstrong and St. Joseph-Ogden High Schools. Also, four Student Council members from Paxton attended each of these schools to learn the way their school and council is run. In April, PHS will again be represented at the annual State Convention. Jana Henson was selected to participate on the Honor Council Committee and Rhonda Bement on the Constitution Committee, both on the state level. Student Council would like to thank the faculty, students, and community for their support this year. MATH TEAM First Row: Becky Litwiller, Jodie Betts. Kris Joyce. Danny Vu. Kim Short. Jim Arends. SPRING PLAY CATCH ME IF YOU CAN BY Jack Weinstock And Willie Gilbert CATCH ME IF YOU CAN By Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert ‘‘As a cheerful game of homicide and red herrings I thought it was fun ... A resourceful and amusing mystery comedy. -N. Y. Post The excitement begins immediately. An advertising woman, having brought her husband to the boss' mountain lodge for a honeymoon, has called in the local police to investigate his sudden disappearance. Then enters a handsome man, and one or the other must have larceny on the mind; for against her protests he insists that he is the missing husband. And a nun comes along to back up the story. A funny woman who owns a delicatessen enters the scene, and before you know it there are two murders at the isolated lodge. From this racing start, it careens into a jim-dandy ending.
