Miss Greenwell came to Paxton High School in 1980 as a business teacher. During her years here, she taught Typing 1, Accounting 1 2, and Consumer Education. This year she was named Teacher of the Year by her fellow faculty members. Those of you who knew her well will remember the warm, kind-hearted person that she was. Everyone will remember her cheerful attitude and the life she brought to Paxton High School. Any time we see the Oak Ridge Boys, eat Chicken McNuggets from McDonalds, or listen to the song Stop In the Name of Love , we will remember our wonderful teacher and friend. Will there be any budget cuts? If so, what will be cut? These questions and many more have come before the school board this year. Our school board has worked very hard to find the answers to these questions. There will be no program cuts in the budget. Consolidation Is not In the plans for the near future. The school board hears many complaints for several different reasons throughout the year, but they seldom receive a “thank-you”. Our school board has done a fine Job this year, and they deserve a thank-you from all of us students. For the first time, parents were Invited to the Induction ceremony. The parents were here to look on as students said their pledges and received their membership cards. The members of the National Honor Society worked extra hard this year to raise money so they could present, for the first time, a $100 scholarship to one of the Senior members. Also, for the first time, they are going to award letters to those students who made the honor roll three out of four quarters of each year. Private tutoring was provided by the National Honor Society for any student who needed help In any subject area. A list of the tutors was kept in the guidance office throughout the year. At the close of the 1982-83 year, the members were honored at their annual banquet, and the officers for next year were announced. Second Semester Members: M. Slattery, A. Takahashl, L. Craft, J. Cutbacks in the school budget and lack of funds were major reasons why the Science Club was not very active this year. Among their plans for this year were a trip to the annual Engineering Open House at the University of Illinois. Since a bus was too expensive, it ended up that only a few went and did so on their own. They also planned to participate in the JETS Com- petition testing at Parkland College. Again, obtaining a bus was a problem. To raise a little money, the club sold posters and had a bake sale. This years’ officers, (picture at right) were: President-Danette Berner Vlce-President-Dave Carson Secretary-Susan McBride Treasurer-Dave Merrick The Blue and Gold, our only source of monthly news, had a smaller staff than past years. With a small staff Mr. Rundqulst (sponsor) says It Is hard to put together very many issues. The Blue and Gold featured a roving reporter column, movie reviews, and top records for the month. They also reported on the progress of the athletic teams and other organizations in school. Mr. Rundqulst, sponsor; Billy Warner, Susan Roy, and Kathy White. VICA which stands for Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, is an organization containing the ICE workers. Students are given the opportunity to work half of the day while going to school the other half. It gives students the opportunity to earn money as well as learn new skills for their future. Their goal is to sponsor programs for the retarded and for senior citizens confined to total care homes in the Paxton area. The Club sold tags this year to raise money for the Paxton senior citizens. The time passed so fast this year. I was so busy In being suprlsed by many things. At first everything was new to me. Especially, that huge corn feild soybean,...,1 Just couldn’t believe it. But, now that scenery Is also one of my unforgettable memories. In this year, I experienced alot of things. I played football, for the first time In my life. I tried out for speech team and delivered my speech In JAPANIZEENGUSH (I hope they understood). And I sang in chorus, for many occasions. I want to “thank you” to those people who supported me. Domo Arlgato Throughout this year I met many people and learned alot of things. I do hope that you too got something through this year, with this Japaneze guy. Because I think AFS experiance should be consist of give and take. Life goes on and the AFS year goes on too. It is the first jazz band to compete for many years. They prepared three numbers by practicing before school twice a week for two months. The jazz band also gave a mini concert at the Clara Peterson and the Jr. High. They scored fourth out of eleven bands at the festival, which is pretty good for their 1st time out. The solo and ensemble contest was held In March. This year, as always, they captured many superior ratings. Six of the seven entries came back with such ratings. This year’s team consisted completely of underclassmen. They had 5 freshmen and 2 sophomores. They all improved greatly as the year went on. The team put in a lot of hard work that really paid off in the end. The highlights of the season included: The team finishing 6th in the tough Rantoul Regional, missing qualification for sectional by only 3 points; their winning the Bismark Invitational; finishing 2nd in the PHS and Georgetown Invitationals. Another activity that the cheerleaders participated In was the National Coaches Appreciation Day, on which they gave coaches cards and made posters. Last year’s cardboard tags were replaced this year by ribbons with catches on them, and sold by the cheerleaders. The whole squad worked together to make a spirited football season. PROPHECY FOR The future of the Class of 83 as predicted by psychic, Dave Merrick. Dave predicts many outstanding feats to be accomplished by our class. Among the greatest accomplishments are are that of Angle Harper, who will graduate from Eastern Illinois University on the Dean’s List and return to PHS to teach P.E., and that Mike Wldmer will become the new chief of police due to all his experience with the police. He decided that if he couldn’t beat them why not join them. Dave also predicts that Gerald “the tiger” McClure will become the editor of TIME Magazine, thanks to all he never did for the yearbook. Dave says that Tiger will win world-wide recognition for his outstanding cover stories, some of which evolved from his days at PHS. One story will feature April Wilson, the leader of the Democratic Association for Mild Names, DAMN, for short. Tiger will also win fame for his coverage of the changing of hosts of the American Bandstand. Patty Lee will take Dick Clark’s Job as host and win instant fame. Dave predicts that Tiger’s best accomplishment will be the coverage of WW3, where Debbie Houston finally blinked once and blew up half of the world. Dave predicts that many people will be doing much the same as they are now. Lisa Ad■ kins will still be working at the Pool Hall with no college education. Jett Arends will still be twirling a rifle. Nancy Beckstrand still won’t understand. Shelly Mabls and JoAnn Moyer will be uptown dragging Main, while Willie Griffin is still roaming the halls. Lisa Craft will still be laughing as she does her pom pon routine. And Bryan Smith and Kathy Stedwell will still be the drum majors for the Light Cavalry Brigade. Dave Predicts that many graduates will do complete turnabouts and make drastic changes In themselves. Jeannlne Wright will become a nun, and we all know that’ll be a changel Danette Berner will talk of divorce instead of marriage; Sandy Massey will get married and have 10 children, the shortest of which is 6’5” tall; and Donna Manzke will buy her own car, maybe two. Everyone seems to think that once you graduate, you never see your classmates again, but Dave says this is not so. Some of our classmates will have even become business partners. Danny Marlar and Ed Clampltt will have opened up a business together. This business Is named D and E’s Beauty and Fitness Parlor. They will have a membership consisting of Roy Havenner, who conditions there for his great marathons, Vicky Pruitt, who worked out there before she got her fob at PHS in the cafeteria where she serves their famous 8 lb. meatballs. Thanks to Danny’s expertise, Mindy Swan will be able to keep her hair In tip-top blonde shape. Bonita Benear will also be a member. She will go there before every beauty pageant. She attributes her success to their greatness. Brian Rydell and Brian Lemley will also go into business together. They are going to be potato farmers. Tater lor themll Dave also predicts that the school Itself will undergo many changes. Dot Foster, God rest her soul, will no longer be here. But have no fear, Patty Sitter is here to replace her. One thing that will never change is Brian Adams’ absence. He has not been to a school function since graduation. Come to think of it, neither has his fiancee Kathy Combs. Maybe they are going to skip out again. Dave also predicts many mishaps will occur. He says that Lenny Arnold will not be able to attend our class reunion due to car trouble. And body shop owner Scott Jennings is now at work fixing Dave Carson’s car. Mr. Carson will have had many car accidents, but long time admirer, Tonya Anderson, now wife, does not seem to mind. Lana Gibbs DeAtley will not be able to attend due to her daughter’s graduation. Dave predicts that many of 1983’s graduates will reach their goals. Donna Harms will become that Roller Derby Donna that she always dreamed about. And yes, Lynn Burdette is now a doctor. Glynls Holland will pass the CPA exam with no problem. Karen Withers will become a great basketball star along with 114 THE CLASS OF 1983 teammate Lauren Bloom, who makes extra cash by fixing zippers. Dave predicts that the U.S. military will be stronger than ever with Bob Gilonski and Ja-clnda Milchuck in charge. Since Bob and Ja-cinda are married by now, things are going great for them, but things are not so great for Kay Huneke. Kay works along side of Bob and Jacinda, but still hasn’t gotten her license to fly jets. Dave predicts that Bob Morger will finally fulfill his highest dreams. He will finally have his own private line of “Morger Only” jackets. His lifetime girlfriend Kris Watts, will model these jackets for him. Thanks to fellow classmate Mark Turner, these jackets have been a success. Mark used his position at ESDA to sell these jackets to stranded motorists to keep them warm. Some of our classmates will follow in the footsteps of our principal, Mr. Wylie. Chris Taven-ner will be the new principal at PHS. He will be just as interested in motorcycles as Mr. Wylie, but he had a few more falls. Doug Ehmen will still be riding his motorcycle, but now he is a real professional. He has worked hard and really earned the title that once belonged to Evil Kneivel. Dave says that no matter how hard they try, Karen Abbe and Debbie Snelling will not be able to leave the Hen House. Debbie will soon be the manager, and Karen her assistant. Bo-mana Buzzard will be employed by Mr. Harber as the full-time speech captain. And Debbie Godwin us will not be able to quit on the Colonel. Her friends say that Kentucky Fried Chicken isn’t any good when it costs money. Some of our classmates will move away from Paxton and try to find a new life. Connie Harris and Alice Judge will split and move to opposite sides of the U.S.; while Holly Alkire will move to a big mansion and raise cats for Mr. Guyot. Chris Beck will spend her life traveling. She is trying to see just how fast she can go. Leon Anda will move to a much richer society to become the world’s number 1 jeweler. Char- lie Bennett will move to a disease stricken country where his cemetery can be a success. Linda Killingsworth McClure is now mayor of LODA. Dave says that a few of our classmates will stay right here at PHS. Denise Glazlk will replace Jr. as bus driver. Bob Basmus will be the new band director, leading the drum line to national attention. And Beth Meyer will replace Mrs. Frisbie as the Analytic Geometry Teacher. Dave predicts that we will lose all contact with a few of our classmates: J.J. Long will be discovered missing one night from Eisners where she reportedly left with Scott Sheehan to become the butcher at Scott’s Hog Haven. Bicky Combs will also never be seen since his last deer hunt. But then again, he never really was here in the first place. Dave predicts that Kelly Molck, Sue McBride, and Donna McCann will form a new rock band with Akira Takahashi as the lead singer and Mike Lantz as featured trumpet. To finish off mastermind Dave’s predictions, Kris Marshall and Meg Slattery will still be attending college trying to decide what to major in, their MRS degree or BS degree. Steve Luttrell will replace Alfred E. Newman in MAD Magazine, while Mike Nuckols has remained in Paxton and his now Street Superintendent and reportedly running for mayor in the 2003 election. Oh yes, we cannot forget Tawna Swanstrom whose funny jokes and dirty tricks got her admitted into a mental institution. If you believe in the spirit of a psychic, the future of the Class of 1983 looks pretty dim. 115 Karen Sue Abbe Abb Basketball 2 Brian Paul Adams VICA 4; Reflector 2; Student Council 1-4, District Treasurer 4: FFA 1; Basketball 1-4; Football 1-4; Class President 1,3, Representative 2; Prom Court 3; Prom Committee 3; Speech Team 2; Graduation Committee 4 Lisa Joy Adkins Concert Choir 1-3; Girls’ Chorus 1-3; Mixed Chorus 1-3; Music Contest 1-3; Blue and Gold 3; NHS 3-4, Vice-President 4; Reflector 4, Secretary 4; Student Council 1-4; Mental Health 1-4, Treasurer 2, President 3; Trackettes 1-2; Volleyball Scorekeeper 3-4; Intramurals 2-4; Class Treasurer 1-4; Prom Committee 3; Who’s Who 3-4; Soc. of Dlst. Each team member competed in the Individual category and several teamed up to compete in eight person teams and two person teams. Overall, Paxton did a very good job at the contest. Both the Algebra 1 team and the Geometry team took second place, and the Fresh-Soph eight person team took second place. In Algebra competition, Lisa Anderson, Sonja Rawls, and Wade Bleich brought home medallions for being in the top 15% of their category. Vernon Rhodes tied for second place and brought home a plaque. In Geometry competition, Galen Lltwlller, Peggy Gronemeyer, and Ray Bott brought home medallions, while Danny Vu tied for first place and brought home a plaque. Ten people advanced to the state competition held at Illinois State University on April 30. PHS had some winners at the state level also. Vernon Rhodes came away with the second place trophy. He tied for first place, but after a tie-breaker decision, was awarded second place. The Algebra 1 team took second place out of 33 teams. Paxton place 21st out of 57 schools, overall. Youth Of The Month Youth Of The Year Youth of the Month Youth of the Year competition was something new for Paxton this year. The Paxton Exchange Club introduced this competition to PHS seniors as part of a national program to honor the youths of today. Each participant was asked to fill out an application which listed the activities participated in during their high school years, grades for each semester, and community activities and services. The Exchange Club chose each Youth of the Month from these applications. The first winner was chosen in October and the last in March, with one for each month in between. After the six were chosen, they each had to write an essay entitled, “My Greatest Achievement”. From these essays and original applications, the Exchange Club chose one winner to be the Youth of the Year. The Youth of the Year then wrote another essay entitled, “America, the World, and Me”, and went on to further competition. If the Youth of the Year from PHS should win in further competition, they could be awarded a savings bond or possibly a scholarship. Though this year's staff was a small one, we managed to make all of our deadlines and Improve the book a great deal. We exercised many new techniques that we learned at the two yearbook seminars at both the U of I and at Coal City. Since the book is delivered in the fall, the staff had the first part of the year to plan and make all of the decisions. The theme, A Closer Look at 83, was selected at this time and the cover was drawn up. Producing a yearbook takes a lot of hard work. The staff could not have done it without the extreme effort of our sponsor, Mrs. Frisbie. She pushed us a lot, but we all agree that it paid oft in the end. We ended up producing a pretty good book, and the staff appreciates her efforts. The staff would also like to recognize Tiger McClure’s contribution to the staff as Editor. He took on a lot of responsibility and had many tasks to perform. In addition to his job as Editor, he was also a photographer. Just as teamwork is important in sports, it is equally important in producing a yearbook. The whole staff had to work together and help each other. And, we are all very proud of the work we've donel PAGE CREDITS Tiger McClure-pages: 1-6, 10-19, 55, 67-71, 74-77, 108-113, 126-128.
