The Varsity Football Mustangs had a good season with a few disappointments. With fourteen returning, eleven of whom were starters, Paxton was picked as one of the favorites to win the Wauseca Conference title. In the first game, at Mahomet, we cruised by the Bulldogs for an easy nine point win. In the second game, at Monticello, the game was actually closer than the score showed, as they scored in the final minutes to set the Mustangs back to a 1-1 record. The next game was against the eventual Class 2A State Champions, Danville Schlarman. After almost three quarters of play the scoreboard showed that Schlarman led 27-6. But with 41 seconds left in the game, the scoreboard showed 27-26, with an extra point yet to be attempted. Our record dropped to 1-2. After a forfeit against Westville, we rolled over Georgetown, and had an excellent second half for a Homecoming victory over Watseka. Then, we took a 4-2 record against Clifton Central. Clifton’s only score was on a safety, as we won the game, 12-2. After an overtime upset by Hoopeston, we came up against Gibson City in our final game of the season. We knew we were just playing for pride, but Gibson City was never in the ballgame, as we ended our season with a 6-3 record. Back Row: Vic Zimmerman. They looked forward to those “competitive” teams, and came out looking like winners, whether they won or lost. When they lost, they lost with honor and pride. When they won, they won with good sportsmanship and spirit. The Varsity squad ended the year with a fine 15-8 record including an 11-3 Wauseca conference record. GOTTA WANNA WIN! 19
