REFLECTOR 1082 UOLUME 7$ PAXTON HIOH SCHOOL 700 WEST ORLEANS STREET PAXTON, ILLINOIS 00057 m?nin PAXTON HIGH IS MOVING ON’’! 1 HR ffi !l PAXTON HIGH SCHOOL BEFORE CLASS OF '82. PAXTON HIGH SCHOOL AFTER CLASS OF '82! To move on ... This year's reflector theme is “Moving On . High school is the base for the rest of our lives and more learning. We, as students at Paxton High, have beem motivated by the spirit of the school. We are always moving: doing something different, striving to be better, to improve, and as more likely than not, we do increase our abilities and experiences. Moving On ... That’s Our Motto! Why be just good if you can be better We have added another excellent chapter to our Alma Mater - this one better than the last and the next bound to improve with the spirit of Paxton in the lead. We can all improve and the only way to improve is to change, be daring, do something different. Ah ... but, Yes, the going will get tough, and the change we try won’t always work out, but life goes on and these isn’t anything better: helping people, falling in love, being somebody. And, for certain, we don’t want to miss any part of the experience. So let’s do our part, start changing and improving, and let’s get to MOVING ON”! 2 FIGHT SONG LOYALTY Let’s give a cheer, cheer, cheer for Paxton High School Let’s give a cheer, cheer, cheer for the team For they will fight till the end They will fight and never bend They will fight to make our colors gleam Rah Rah Let’s Give a cheer, cheer, cheer for Paxton High School Let's give a cheer and never let it die Let's all yell like sin for the team that will win Another victory for Paxton High Clap-Clap-Clap-Fight Clap-Clap-Clap-Fight Clap-Team-Clap-Team Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap-Fight On Paxton, On to Victory Our standards ever high Our loyal pledge we give to you To do or die We are behind you always, Blue Gold Fling your banner to the sky Our faith is ever full and strong Unto you our hearts belong Dear ol’ Paxton High Praises we sing to you our Alma Mater true Courage and valor and loyalty to you HP —. mu rpp I mm HE SENIOR ENROLLMENT — 101 JUNIOR ENROLLMENT — 78 SOPHOMORE ENROLLMENT FRESHMAN ENR v- ‘ v - The 1982 Reflector is dedicated to Mr. Willie Burgess who dedicated many years helping to create a pleasant atmosphere for learning and play at Paxton High School. The pride that “Willie” took in the appearance and smooth function of the physical plant of Paxton High School has carried over to both students and faculty at PHS. Everyone in the community has shared in that pride and has benefited by Mr. Burgess’ commitment that Paxton High School be the most attractive and comfortable facilty that it could be. His quiet, unassuming manner and his spirit of cooperation will long be remembered after this and other graduating classes have left the halls of PHS halls, literally and figuratively, brightened by Mr. Burgess. With fourteen returning, eleven of whom were starters, Paxton was picked as one of the favorites to win the Wauseca Conference title. In the first game, at Mahomet, we cruised by the Bulldogs for an easy nine point win. In the second game, at Monticello, the game was actually closer than the score showed, as they scored in the final minutes to set the Mustangs back to a 1-1 record. The next game was against the eventual Class 2A State Champions, Danville Schlarman. After almost three quarters of play the scoreboard showed that Schlarman led 27-6. But with 41 seconds left in the game, the scoreboard showed 27-26, with an extra point yet to be attempted. Our record dropped to 1-2. After a forfeit against Westville, we rolled over Georgetown, and had an excellent second half for a Homecoming victory over Watseka. Then, we took a 4-2 record against Clifton Central. Clifton’s only score was on a safety, as we won the game, 12-2. After an overtime upset by Hoopeston, we came up against Gibson City in our final game of the season. We knew we were just playing for pride, but Gibson City was never in the ballgame, as we ended our season with a 6-3 record. Back Row: Vic Zimmerman. THE FUTURE MUSTANGS 20 This year's Paxton Junior Varsity Football team consisted of many freshmen, 15 in all, with 6 sophomores to help them out. This was the third year of partial Freshman football since it was dropped. The J.V. football team was coached by Mr. Glenn and Mr. Bailey; this was Mr. Bailey’s second year as coach. The freshmen showed improvement throughout the year. These boys will be the future Mustangs at Paxton, and will carry on the tradition of good ball playing. Paxton's record was 1-9 this year. This year’s J.V. volleyball team was a very highly skilled and aggressive team. With a 19 5 record, they have been the hardest working team I have had for years. This year’s freshmen were a very coachable group. The J.V. team were overall a very active team; they improved greatly over the whole season. They will help make a very skilled Varsity squad. Craig Stockman was one of this year's co-captains. Craig had an outstanding season and finished 14th in State. Coach Guyot. throughout the years, has given the team a special meaning and pride; to him a great amount of gratitude is given. First row: Donnie Foster. Dave Carson. Brad Ashmore. Mike Livermore. Mark Kavajecz. This year's season was mainly characterized as a rebuilding one. Throughout the year the members of varsity squad changed frequently with the strengthening of the team. Craig and Mark frequently led the pack throughout the year. Both will be missed next year, but will be replaced by strong hopefuls. Among this group will be sophomore Jeff Harrison who often was also up front. Coach Guyot pressed the team early in the season which helped it greatly later on. All through the year the team always kept a high spirit and that helped to hold the team together. Work those arms! Paxton's Pac-Women. Thank God it's over!! This year's captain (above) and the only senior team member was Carla Patterson. She is an exceptional leader and the team will miss her next year. The festivities were capped off with a dance by SLIPSTREAM. Student Council also started selling concessions at sport events this year. Every member took part as workers. Student council sold T-shirts with each class' signatures on them. Brian Adams was elected Treasurer of the Kickapoo District for next year. The Student Council sponsored the 2nd Annual Jump Rope For Heart, and turned about $2300 in for the American Heart Association. We also painted the windows uptown with little sayings to get the town in the spirit of things. Throughout the season we made signs and put them up in the halls to get everyone ready for the game that night. This year we also decide to purchase sweats. The team suffered from lack of players as many of last year’s players did not go out for the team. There were five returning lettermen on the original seven player player squad. Coach Prina brought up three sophomores and three fresh- ■ men to fill in the position. The team had alot of fun, even though their record was poor. Hopefully next year’s team will have a better record. We would like to dedicate this page to coach Prina. Vic Z. goes high tor a jump ball as Todd P. gets position. They posted another 20 win season making it 3 in a row. They also repeated as the Wauseca Conference champions, extending their record to six in a row. The girls also placed third in the Peotone Holiday Classic losing only the game to Kankakee Eastridge by only one point. In the 20-4 season, 3 of the teams 4 loses were by 2 or less points. This is particularly impressive since the club was hampered by injuries to too many players and an unusually bad winter which caused an already difficult schedule to become even more difficult. The 1981-82 squad was mainly composed of Seniors, seven in all, with all five starters being seniors. The Seniors had a very successful career with five of the seven dressing varsity ever since their sophomore year. This depth of experience is the main reason the team was able to overcome the very difficult season with such a fine record. However, the loss of such part of the team means the 1982-82 team will have a great deal of work ahead of them to maintain the fine tradition of women’s basketball at Paxton High. The freshmen girls had a record of 2-2. The boys had a record of 3-5. The sophomore boys team was balanced with three freshmen and two sophomore starters. Jill Seibring puts up the shot. The Mental Health Club has approximately 40 members, most of which are very involved. During this past year they went on various trips to the Ford County Nursing Home, the Knights Templar Home, and the Elliott School for Mentally Handicapped Children. In the school year, 81-82, the Mental Health Club was one of the busiest clubs. Hopefully in the years to come they will continue their good work. Swing Choir: Front: Beth Anderson. Carol Peers. During the first few weeks of school choral groups were choosen and preparations began for the up coming years’ program. This year the American Field Service Club (AFS) had 29 members. The club was sponsored by Mr. Daro. The club took part in many activities this year. At the beginning of the year the club had a hot dog roast to welcome this year’s AFS student, Homero DeBoni. The members also entered a float in the Christmas parade and sold monster cookies to help raise money for the AFS weekend. The weekend was held on the 19th and 20th of February. Seventeen students and their hosts from area towns came to Paxton so they could spend time together. The weekend consisted of a lock-in on Friday night, a skating party on Saturday, and a pot luck supper on Saturday night. The students had alot of fun. s 111 o DC 111 (0 O 111 o cc 111 111 o cc 111 0 o Ul AMERICANFIELDSERVICEAMERICAN ERIC ANFIELDSERVICE AMERICANFIEI Officers: Front Row: Kandy Klann. Sec. Homero DeBoni. These were my thoughts before leaving my house, my family, my country, to go to another family that I didn’t know in another country with different language and customs. Now that all is gone, I have my memories and they are going to last forever. Memories of the first days, when it was hard to understand people, when it was hard to say bye. It was a great chance for growing and I grew, learning new customs, traditions, a new culture. This experience was only possible with your participation, though. You who talked with me and explained how things were. You who helped me when I needed and showed me the way to go. To you all, and especially to my family and Mr. Daro, I would like to say thanks for this wonderful year. I’ll never forget it. Walk together, talk together, ye all the people on the earth, then and only then shall we have peace, AFS is love, AFS is brotherhood, we are here for just one year to make the message clear.” More than a song a hope for the future.
