Class Day Baccalaureate and Graduation Graduation days meant that the class of '74 would have to leave the world of study halls, detentions, and flying stoppers for the world of jobs, coping with the responsibilities of adulthood. Class Day was as it has been in the past. At Baccalaureate mothers of graduating students were given the traditional roses, acknowledging years of pep talks to encourage their kids. At Graduation senior girls carried yellow roses in the procession for the first time. Three members of the graduating class were the speakers at Commencement exercises. Traditionally, graduates received their diplomas, said good-bye to the old world they had known, and dreamed of what the future would bring. It went back to the Stone Age when a boy became an outcast of his tribe because he believed in different things. All ended well, though, with the boy inventing the wheel. The fall play, entitled One Foot in Heaven, dealt with a Reverend and his family who moved from a cooperative congregation to one where there were constant arguments between the church members. The Reverend finally won his battle and made the people realize that they had to stick together to get things done. Dave VanderWaal, George, studies the object that got the world rolling. Just think what it would be like to have class as they did back in the Stone Age. 13 Homecoming — '74 style Homecoming was a pep rally outside near the new football field, flying streamers fastened on the bleachers and goal posts. The Thespians and the Senior floats won first prizes; and Sue Siebring was crowned Homecoming queen. A new football field, bleachers, a refreshment stand under a tent, and the fashionable Midwest “Potty houses were unique attractions. PHS fans cheered the Mustangs to a win over Herscher, mum petals fell as the crowd jumped up and down, each time the Mustangs scored a touchdown. The spirit of Homecoming, however, did not end with the game. The coronation of the queen, people having a good time, and teachers out on the floor dancing were highlights of that night's dance. Rock out! Phil Meyer and Linda Partridge dance to the music of Skillet. Right, top: Students admire the winning Senior float. Right, below: The Kazoo Band waits to perform at the Pep rally. My parents live in a very beautiful area near Nisser lake. The lake is surrounded by mountains, a lot of wood and small lakes. The district is a typical farming and lumbering area. There are not too many people here, but the people who are living here are very friendly and relaxed. My father works in a hydroelectric power station. My oldest brother, Steinar, is attending an engineering school. Last summer, just before I came to the U.S., my other brother, Morten, got married. They live in Porsgrunn, where they work and go to school. I have one sister, Aasta, who goes to school. Anna-Elisabeth's family in Norway. Front row: Aasta, Astrid, Anna-Elisabeth Kravik. Joy Williams comes from the northern half of Tasmania, the island state of Australia, and lives on a beef farm. Her eldest brother is married as is her only sister. Her older brother has just graduated from college. Her younger brother is in his sophomore year in high school. Since she has been here she has participated in many activities especially sports which she enjoys very much. She has spoken at many churches, service clubs, 4-H clubs about her country. While she was here, she stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson, Cindy, Julie, and Chris. Not only did the Thompsons enjoy having Joy live with them, but PHS students enjoyed meeting and knowing a real Australian. PHS will always welcome you, Joy, so hurry back! I Oh no, not me again! sighs Joy as she busily mends a curtain for the fall play. Joy's family: Ian, Johanna (niece). Mum, Dad, and Matthew (nephew). John, Joy's brother, works on the Rural Fires Board. 17 Bringing in the Boar's head. Vicki Corning and Chuck Tuggle. Serving the Queen and her court. Singers and dancers-Kathy Carson and Ted Beer. How's this for a new thing? The cafeteria is transformed into the throne room of the English palace; high school students become the Queen's court, and Theresa Tucker turns out to be Queen Elizabeth, herself. What is it? Why, it’s Madrigals, of course; the old-time English singers and dancers are back, under the direction of Mrs. Mary Ann Beer. At the two Madrigal Banquets, guests were served such food as Roast Beef au Jus, Flaming Plum Pudding, and Wassail. The banquet was complete with a boar's head, singers, dancers, musicians, waitresses, and Elizabethan costumes. Did you miss it this year? Well, with luck you can attend next year. Besides the chilly weather and bright snow, Christmas and Santa Claus made their way to Paxton. A Christmas dance was held, featuring the band Yosemite, and Christmas queen candidates were elected. Teri Elliott became the new Miss Merry Christmas. Along with Teri, the other candidates rode in the annual Christmas parade. After all the Christmas activities at the school, students at PHS were granted a two-week vacation; perhaps to rest up for the exams the following month. The King, Marcy Epps, takes charge of his kingdom in the Princess and the Pea,'' a segment of the Christmas play. Track and Cross Country's great new season on a brand new track. . . . Baseball, tennis and golf as good as ever. . . . Gymnastics adding that little extra bit of excitement. . . . Coaches who know that not all their work went down the drain. . . . Girls' sports for women libbers. . . . Cheerleaders who keep the players revved up, the audience on their toes, and Paxton High School on top of everything. That's Mustang Spirit! o A C H E S John Seng Thomas Diver Fred Guyot Above: George Young Below: Bonita Tuggle Toni Molck Lynn Weisenbarn does a swan on the balance beam. Gymnasts form a human pyramid. Larry Steiner. Charlie Owens, and Kelly Molck form a totem pole. Speed and accuracy play a large role in gymnastics. Without split-second timing, there would be a twenty-five person pile-up on the cross-vaulting box exercise. This would happen if just one person's timing was off. Even in individual events, timing is essential on the trampoline, balance beam, or parallel bars. Of course, all this talent doesn't come naturally. As they say, Practice makes perfect! If you attend the annual gymnastics show, you'll see for yourself that practice and hard work pay off. 23 Track Does track seem difficult to you? Can you run or jump better than the other guy? Well, everyone knows that it's a hard sport that needs a lot of practice. Evidently, that's exactly what our 74 track team did since it had a very good season. The Varsity team won the Ford County meet for the second year in a row. Our freshman-sophomore team won the St. Anne and Paxton Invitational. And you can't forget the trackettes” for cheering boys on when they needed it most. That's real Mustang spirit. Junior Varsity: Front row: Jim Hyde. Dan Ostgard and Doug Niewold. A year of near misses and injuries ' was how Mr. Guyot summed up the year. Paxton's Cross-Country team had their best season, nevertheless. They had records of 21 dual and 18 consecutive wins. Paxton won 2nd place in the unique Manteno Conditioner and the Bismarck Invitational. They captured 8th in the 35 team Spartan Classic at St. Joseph. In all, the harriers won four team trophies. Early in the year, three of the top seven runners were injured. The team still managed to run 4285 miles through the season. Dan Rust, Mr. Diver (coach). Diver, the coach. He spends long hours doing various jobs from working on the courts to teaching boys and girls the proper strokes for winning tennis. The team registered a 5-4 record, which is great since they play schools such as Champaign Centennial, Normal U-High, Rantoul, and Kankakee Eastridge. The golf program was headed by Randy Johnson. Their home course was Lakeview Country Club. Their top players were underclassmen, so they will be on the course another year. A major remodeling of the baseball field is under way. Pat Prina, baseball coach, is running the project. He is also putting long hours into his work. He hopes to produce a winning baseball team. 26 Kevin Mikeworth Mark Lawless Terry Whitcomb Bryant Watts Jim Pilcher Mark LeClair Scott Carlson Tom Suslavich Rick Schaumburg Ron Woodworth Curt Bloom Dave Wilson Alan Schroeder Gary Anderson Randy Carden Larry Carter 27 Back row: Mark Maehle, Herschel Ad well. Coach Young led the first year footballers to a 7-0 season, while Coach McKenzie's sophomores were 7-2. The sophomores had a startling overtime win against Spring Valley. Mr. Glenn was the new assistant freshman coach, while Mr. Seng was under Mr. McKenzie. Both the freshman and sophomores show great promise for Paxton's football program in the future. We played good, very aggressive basketball this year. That's what Head Coach Zimmerman had to say about his first season team. The team was young this year and we will have four of the first five starters back next season for a crack at the conference. They ran a fine half-court zone, which impressed the coach. The Mustangs were 3-8 in conference action and 7-17 in over-all play this season. They displayed fine team work and had some fantastic and very close games and upsets. They traveled to Westville where they beat out the Tigers in a nail-biter in overtime. In the Mon-ticello Holiday Tournament the Mustangs played an almost perfect game to overcome Mahomet-Sey-mour. They finished fourth in that tourney. Even though they (Paxton) were lacking in height, it was a very quick team. Their fast break plus aggressive play played a major roll in helping Paxton defeat the awesome Dan-ville-Schlarman. Paxton didn't win many games this year, but they did improve. This was a year of rebuilding. Girls' Tennis Rhonda Baier played No. 1 singles all year. She captured 2nd place singles in the Kankakee District Meet and went on to compete in state competition held in Arlington Heights. Spirit shines among our tennis team. The girls showed much enthusiasm while cruising to a 9-2 season. They also ended up second in the tough Kankakee District where Rhonda Baier captured a runner - up position in singles. This enabled her to go to state competition at Arlington Heights. Of course, she didn't go alone. Mr. Diver, tennis coach, and the rest of the girls' racquet gang accompanied her. This was Mr. Diver's first year as girls' tennis coach. He also coaches the boy's tennis team. He does a fine job at both positions, as their records show. He had the team do much roadwork and run the lines to keep in shape for their competitors. Good luck next year, girls. Front row: Julie Quivey, Marcy Epps, Jacqueline Geers. In the invitational that Paxton hosted, we got 3rd. Anticipating that many girls will be out next year, the team expects to expand and hopefully will bring home more Paxton wins for PHS. A girls' track team was also formed this year. They began with a lot of practice and sore muscles, but have learned a lot about team work. For the second year, the girls participated in intramurals. In an expanded program, they played hockey as well as volleyball, basketball, and badminton. Even the teachers got involved. Intramurals let the girls show their ability, and are a lot of fun. Girls' sports are really coming up in the world. Above: A little twist and it should go, says Dale Reeder playing intramural ping pong. Boys' Intramurals To help keep the boys from skipping out of home room Mr. McKenzie sets up intramurals. Some of the activities include aggressive but sometimes dangerous hockey games, and basketball which isn't quite as hazardous as hockey, but tempers often flare and the refs must take cover. For the boys who prefer non-contact sports. Coach McKenzie supplies ping pong games and badminton. In these games, the players are kept separated so no physical injuries occur. Cindy Thompson, Kim Eichelberger, Cindy Eppelheimer, Bea Kitchens. The Varsity Cheerleaders have changed the size of their squad. This year there were eight cheerleaders instead of the usual seven. All eight of them worked together to arouse Mustang spirit. They had pep assemblies outside, and before every football game stick-ons were sold to the student body, encouraging a victory over our opposing teams. The Varsity and the Frosh-Soph cheerleaders hung posters in the halls to build school spirit for each game. For the basketball season, the Var- sity cheerleaders purchased new sweaters. The Freshman cheerleaders bought skirts. The mascot's outfit was also changed. All three squads sent girls to a workshop last summer where they attended practices, cheering from 8:30 in the morning until all hours of the night. At these practices, they were taught new routines and cheers. They also competed against cheerleaders from different schools for ribbons and trophies. 36 Cheerleaders Freshman: Center: Polly Pfoff Back: Lisa Poison, Jan Birkey, Jane Amsden, Julie Shallenberger. Have you ever had so many things happening at once that you haven't had time to do anything else? The GAA girls have been really busy this year. Besides the usual roller skating, hiking, and bowling, the girls have had Halloween and the slumber parties, gone skiing and camping. But it isn't easy to do all of these things. It's getting more expensive every year to go on trips like these. Because of girls interscholastic sports, GAA could disband next year. However, if enough girls remain active GAA members, the organization will still continue at PCHS. Wow! Look at those legs. Jane Buhrmaster, Mrs. Tuggle, Robin Swan, and Sue Gulley are oft and rolling. Jane Buhrmaster, eager to get to the water, pulls Rita Quinlan along with her. Diana Eppelheimer and Betty Bauer seem to be content just having their picture taken. Have you ever wondered how it would feel to have to wear long-johns and gym shorts, topped off with a stocking cap, to school on a cold winter day? Join Letterman's Club and find out. Each new inductee into the club had to wear this get-up and carry a brick, with his name on it, around school. The day was ended with a push-a-penny-with-your-nose race across the gym floor during homeroom. The loser of the race, Mike Natterstad, took a trip through the paddling line of Lettermen. Mike didn't sit down for three days after that. Other than initiation, the club had an auction in the spring. They sold everything from cokes to beer signs to raise funds for the Athletic Department. All ICE students of Paxton belong to the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. This year the VICA members have sold unbreakable tumblers and Christmas cards. The money raised will be used for the Employer-Employee Banquet held yearly. The Banquet is just a way for VICA students to show appreciation to their employers for their patience, understanding, and for help- ing the students learn something about their various occupations. Several activities were planned for VICA week. This year it was February 9-15. The first activity was an open house for staff members of the High School and all the employers. A full day field trip to all stations where ICE students work was planned, so everyone had a chance to see what fellow ICE students were doing. There are 51 students involved in ICE and VICA this year, at 32 different training stations. 43 Front row: Teresa Tucker, Vice-Pres.; Marcy Epps, Pres. They also broadcasted a radio show from WRTL every Saturday morning. Now, providing activities for the student body isn't all they do. They make a donation to the Heart Fund. They also helped set up the Kickapoo District of Illinois Student Councils, at a meeting in St. Joe, in January. We hope the new districting will be successful. They had exchange visitations with other schools in the state, so their work was very rewarding. Front row: Sally Apland. Linda Massey, Cindy Eppelheimer, Kippy Hoover, Teresa Tucker. This means that they are going to go to schools and visit for a day and students from other schools will visit PHS for a day. This year at Christmas time the FHA girls also went to the nursing homes, and sang Christmas carols. The group is planning on doing more during the year, as they have in past years. They went to the Ice Capades on Lincoln's Birthday. This year they started something different, having evening meetings every other Thursday night. They also hosted jewelry and Artex parties as money making projects, as well as selling stationery and working in the concession stands at Basketball games. They performed The Boy who Changed the World as their spring play and tryouts for One Foot in Heaven , the fall play, were open to the whole school. Their very successful Christmas play was Once Upon a Time . They have sponsored the yearly Spook House at the Junior High Halloween Carnival, participated in the annual Walk for Mankind , sponsored a refreshment stand at the girls' volley ball tournament and a Sophomore-Varsity game. Their Homecoming float attracted a lot of attention. The colorful Love Bugs won first place. All Thespians are very busy gathering enough points to enable them to take their traditional spring trip to a Chicago theater. 49 The Mental Health Club, in its second year, is doing very well. Many of the members have helped people, not only the mentally handicapped, but many other people in the Paxton area. Some have assisted elderly shut-ins by cleaning their houses, running errands, and performing house-keeping tasks for them. Mental Health members have participated in a Hallowe'en party for the TMH children at Elliott, held a Christmas party, complete with decorations, at the Ford County Nursing Home, and went Christmas caroling in Paxton. They went on a field trip to Rockome Gardens in Arthur, with Elliott TMH children and teachers as their guests. The purpose of this club was to further the knowledge and appreciation of our English heritage.. The club had two goals in mind; to have a Madrigal Banquet, and to raise funds for students who planned to go to England in the spring. The Madrigal Banquet was held in December of 1974 and included all English Lit. members, as well as many other students. Everyone dressed in Elizabethan costumes. They sang and danced as the guests ate their dinner and drank wassail in honor of Queen Elizabeth. After many other fund raising projects, the club reached its goal of $2500. These students went to photography and layout courses, which were planned to help in the preparation of yearbooks. The staff also had men who specialize in yearbook lay-out come in to talk with them, to bring in new ideas and new ways of improving the yearbook. One not only gets a paper, but also a lolli-pop to munch on during classes. The paper consists of only a few pages, but it says a lot. It keeps everyone posted on the news that has happened around the school. The paper gives the student body a chance to follow current athletic standings, and is a place for the individual students to express opinions on a great variety of subjects. 53 Front row: Gary Coleman, Cary Colwell, Betty Bauer. The thought of eight periods per dav instead of nine, next year. . . . Mr. Tuggle's Mechanical-drawing class designing, and Mr. Reeder's Construction-maintenance trades class building a concession stand and restrooms for our new athletic fields. . . . The regular screaming voices of girls unwilling to dissect a worm in Biology class, complaints of a Math problem that seems impossible to answer, and the usual nagging done in almost every other class. . . . Great service from our bus drivers, cooks, secretaries, nurse, and janitors. That's Mustang Spirit! Academics 61 Well, maybe just a little more. Greg Longfellow watches Herschel Adwell in Physical Science. Right: Well, Mrs. Frisbie, you're the expert! says Cheryl Stockwell while getting help in Math. Science and Math Is math all Ax +■ By = C? Not here. Is science all apples falling off trees? No. Paxton High is very up-to-date on the latest ideas on these subjects. Math is broken down to classes such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. And it's taught differently. Who likes to sit around with their heads in their books? Classes are more interesting, to make kids want to learn. Science goes into such things as biology and chemistry. A lot of moaning and groaning is done in biology along with all the dissecting. Part of chemistry class may serve as a candymaking course. Don't get us wrong, you have to work. But wouldn't you rather work chasing butterflies than studying Dalton's atomic theory? Below: Anything interesting?” Steve Bell anxiously waits for Debbie Bender to finish with the biology microscope. 62 Study, study, study! says Kathy Sanderson working on an assignment. Social Studies Business Ed. In Sociology and Psychology, many classes did experiments including group behavior and telepathy investigations. The classes did projects on topics such as child behavior and police brutality. Vocational Co-operation classes met from first through third periods with students from Gibson City, Rankin, Fisher, and Paxton High Schools. Health Co-operation classes changed locations from Gibson City to the Paxton High School. Typing and Shorthand were taught in the traditional way. Chcri Ross types on the electric typewriter in Typing II class. Mr. Climer's 4th hour Psychology class works on group experiments. 63 English and Foreign Language More happens in the foreign language rooms than one might expect. Imagine, for example, a story about a monster eating a subway train. The fabled creature lives in the minds of French students as they hear about the giant dark thing below Paris, all in French. Although Latin is considered a dead language, it lives at PHS. A living language was also revived; Spanish classes were started. A snowman and pig took shape at Christmas time as Spanish students employed their creativity and time in building pinatas. English classes used games and experiments as well as the time-proven method of writing papers. Football, basketball, and baseball tournaments gave almost every member of Journalism class a chance to win, and put interest into the sports writing section of Journalism. Above: Jack Cole sneaks a few Trig problems in, while Mrs. Hutchins thinks he's working on a French assignment. They have a lot of fun and usually come up with some very attractive things. The Music Dept, was busy, too. They had their annual Christmas shows, and participated in the talent show. They also competed in a Music Festival early in 1975. In addition the Jazz Band was kept busy traveling to other schools and performing at home. They work hard, and their effort really pays off. This class helps students learn a trade, while completing their high school education. The program is selective and very well supervised. Students provide the service and assistance in this department, which is well-equipped to supply whatever students need. 67 Home Ec. and Ag. The Home Economics class majored in cooking and sewing. They had special guests come in to help Mrs. Yancey show them what to do. And for experience, the class cooked dinner for each other. Besides these, they learned personal grooming of themselves in general. But Home Ec. isn't just for the girls. The Bachelor Living Course teaches the boys to take care of themselves when they are living alone. Ag has also changed in this way. There are several girls in F.F.A. and the different Ag courses. It seems that Home Ec. and Ag aren't destined to be segregated any longer. Look, Mrs. Yancey, we can cook! Randy Carden and Gary Anderson in Bachelor Living. A physical fitness program set up in the first and fourth quarters brought a lot of sore muscles. The boys stuck to their every year routine of playing football, basketball, etc. New this year to the boys was a type of wrestling called Sumo, and they did play a few games of horseshoes. 69 Industrial Arts and Vo-Tech Tom Graham works with a metal lathe. Vocational Tech, is a career planning course for students interested in a good future. This year students went to Fisher for horticulture classes and to Paxton for Data Processing and Health Occupations. It gives the students the knowledge to make career choices. Industrial Arts is a course where people learn to design and construct objects from wood and metal. They make many interesting objects. Also, they work with many tools and other shop-related materials. Mike Nuss and Jim Peters take directions from Mr. Reeder. Tom Plackett, Paula Wyman, Laura Bittinger, and Cathy Calhoun are four members of a horticulture class at Fisher. Bob Murphy, Don Dow, Gary Gustafson, and Jim Carmen work in Mr. Tuggle's Metalworking class. 70 Mr. Kingston, Laura Lyons, and Richard Pyle read a book together during class. What in the world do we have to do now? complains Roger Stockwell in Mechanical Drawing class. Spec. Educ. and Mech. Drawing Whoever heard of just doing assignments in Mech. Drawing class? The first semester students, who had taken Mech. Drawing for a year, were on independent study. They designed the concession stand for the athletic field. The second sememster students designed restroom and storage proposals to be presented to the board and administration. If the proposals are approved, they will be built under the bleachers. Also the students have designed an activity room to be built behind the locker rooms. It is to be used for another gym, plus a storage room for football equipment. Care, concern, and love are just a few words to describe the Special Education class. Their concern for others is very evident. They sponsored a Halloween and a Christmas party for the TMH children at Elliott, and a Christmas party for the old people at the Ford County Nursing Home. The money that they receive is not used for their needs, but for other less fortunate people. Scott Graham decides he had better start working on his assignment in Mechanical Drawing class. 71 Board of Education and Superintendent Superintendent of schools. Lawrence Eggleston, and Board Sec.. Gene Apland, prepare to present diplomas to seniors. Mr. Eggleston helps Mrs. Cleary serve Christmas dinner at PHS. Lawrence Eggleston, Superintendent of Schools, works hard to help the schools. He even went as far as to help the cooks serve Christmas dinner. Board members have tried to find out more about the schools by visiting them for the day and observing the way the system works. One of the results of these visits was the approval of changing the nine 40 minute periods to eight 50 minute periods at the high school next year. During his term he has been active in working with student and faculty groups for school improvement. Mr. Rohlfing's job as assistant principal isn't the most popular with all the kids, but someone has to do it. He is in charge of taking attendance and trying to keep track of everyone. 73 Kay takes time out from her busy schedule to smile at the photographer. Secretaries—Nurse Mrs. Graham gets ready to run her ambulance service to another school. Look at Dot work, and work, and work. . . The students of PHS keep their secretaries busy. Dorothy Foster and Kay Ardern keep things running smoothly in the front office, while Betty Smith has command in the guidance office. You probably see a lot of Mrs. Smith in the lunch line as she is the official ticket-puncher and money taker. Whenever someone yells, Nurse! Nurse!” Mrs. Graham comes running. She takes care of everyone's owies. She also travels to the other schools to make sure the future students of PHS get here in one piece. Mrs. Smith marks another date on the already crowded calendar. 74 Service Staff What happens if your locker gets jammed, or the waste bin floods, scattering paper all over the floor? Who is there to help? The janitors, of course. Can you imagine in what shape this school would be without them? Wall to wall paper wads, gum, wrappers and books. Not only that, but the restrooms would be hideous! What happens if your parents' car breaks down and you can't get to and from school? Who picks you up? The bus drivers! There wouldn't be any fans at away games, or any players for that matter. Every school system needs buses, and buses won't run by themselves. Think what PHS would be without cooks! Sack lunches every day of the year, for not all students can go home for lunch. Perhaps you haven't thought about the service staff lately, but do - they're always around when one needs help.
