n 66 REFLECTOR PAXTON HIGH SCHOOL, PAXTON, ILLINOIS Cfcuclemic-ptj 8 . XitjlilitjItLs-pij 30 A new school and new doorways opening upon familiar activities in different surroundings . . . The cheers from an energetic Pep Club and a multitude of fans. A team of skillful and determined players proudly fighting for the Blue and Gold—upon a football field, basketball court, or cinder track; . . . this our doorway to sports. At no time has the door to administration been wider ajar, for this first year has been a trying one. Doorways are all too familiar to the physical plant—tremendous time and effort must be expended to maintain so large an institution. 4 No one can deny that the doorway of academics has been most effectively widened—vast improvements have been made in classroom facilities, well equipped shop areas, greater diversity of courses, an increased faculty . . . The doorway most extensively used in the new building is literally the one through which citizens of the community come to assemble. v i % I [ • 1 6 P.E. classes are now conducted in an attractive gymnasium capable of seating over 1500. Certainly such facilities may be effectively utilized for many types of community gatherings. Plays, concerts, speeches, ceremonies, parades, parties, tours, classes . . . academics, highlights, organizations, sports, and personalities are all to be found behind the doors of Paxton High. 7 Sue Belle Benear B.S. In some cases, students who qualify for “on-the-job” training receive actual experience by working on the farm under supervision. This unique and well-rounded course of study produces many fine young future farmers. 22 Mr. Douglas, Guidance Director The basic purpose of the Guidance Department is to assist students in any area pertaining to educational, vocational, or personal advancement. In order to achieve these objectives as efficiently and effectively as possible, Paxton High has two counselors this year. At the news of his death, the students of Paxton High School and Mr. “D’s” many friends were deeply grieved. His presence will be missed, for although he was small in stature, his spirit was big in understanding and patience. The many people who were associated with him will well remember, for years to come, his short figure strutting through the halls of Paxton High School. Nor will they soon forget his gift of laughter, the twinkle of his eyes, and his love for and interest in people—all kinds of people. To perpetuate his memory, a scholarship fund has been set up to help a graduate in each of the next four years’ classes further his education. In this way, the memory of Mr. “D” will continue to serve as he did in life—helping people. 25 Charles C. Newman i ( (.) fra i o t 26 Mr. Shields, who is responsible for high school administration, has been Paxton’s principal for the past sixteen years. Mr. Newman, whose office is now located in the new high school, is Superintendent of Schools. Together they have had many problems to solve this year in making the adjustments necessary in a new building, with new equipment and a broader curriculum. New policies introduced by the high school administration this year include: A one-hour afterschool detention period for disciplinary purposes; hall duty performed by teachers before and during school hours; a shuttle bus service for students living in and near town; a closed campus during the lunch hour for all students eating at school; and the reorganization of the Student-Faculty Board. Thompson Shields Dedication to community spirit and educational improvement, and a love for youth motivate the individual and collective membership of the Hoard of Education of the Paxton Community Unit Schools. Good schools are the result of strong leadership, clear vision for the future, and a desire to truly serve the coming generation. Paxton’s Board of Education are giving of their time and talents to the purpose that Paxton Community Unit Schools may continue to grow successfully. We uo 7 a u In April of 1965, the Senior Class presented Caught In The Villain's Web, a melodrama, under the direction of Mr. R. Keith Jones. The play concerned a rich old woman, a hypochondriac, who was wooed by a villain in order to obtain her money. To pull off his scheme he enlisted the unwilling aid of the old woman’s butler. The comedy was further complicated by the fact that the old woman was trying to marry her son to a society snob. However, the son fell in love with his mother’s nurse. As in all melodramas, the villain was foiled. The butler shot him at the play's climax. Above Seated: Luwana Tarleton, Donna Sharp. Under the direction of Mr. Charles Mevette, the Freshman Girls' Chorus sang “A Stranger in Paradise”; the A Cappella Chorus sang “Selections From West Side Story” and the Girls’ Chorus presented numbers such as “My Desert Flower”. “Sonata for Saxophone and Piano”, by Joanne Bowen and Donna Sharp, and a vocal solo, “Hello, Young Lovers” by Carol Rohlfing, added much to the night’s success. The combined choruses and band, as the highlight of the evening, presented “American Panorama”. The Concert Band played a program of popular music and contest selections Combined band and chorus under the direction of Mr. Hart closed the program 50 Baccalaureate Services were held Sunday, May 23, 1965, in the old high school auditorium. At eight o’clock the Class of ’65 solemnly proceeded down the aisles, to begin this first step of their Commencement Exercises. As songs were presented by the A Cappella Choir and the Madrigals, memories of bygone days, fun and friendships floated through the minds of every senior. As the address and benediction were given, each senior swallowed a lump in his throat, remembering that he was a part of the last Baccalaureate Service to be held in the old high school. Both he and the “old school’’ were becoming a part of the past at P.C. H.S. Above: The Seniors initiate their caps and gowns at Baccalaureate Below: A Cappella singing during Baccalaureate services 51 With semester finals over, seniors attended their last assembly, Class Day. As the seniors moved from participants in high school to onlookers, other classes, too, moved up to their respective sections. Traditionally, the incoming freshmen joined the school body at this time. Honors, awards, and a program by the Chanute Air Force Band made a gay afternoon of the first event of Commencement week. Sentimental recollections of many exciting experiences and memorable events occupied the minds of the seniors as they sat through chilly commencement ceremonies at Memorial Field. The emotions of these graduates were perhaps more nostalgic than those of other senior classes, for the Class of 1965 was the last one to graduate from the old Paxton High School building. Many memories of the old building will hold a special place in the hearts of the Class of 1965. A new section, an index, many more pictures, and several style changes have been incorporated into the longest yearbook in Paxton High’s history. Although one period a day is allotted to the Reflector, the staff gave much more of their own time to planning and producing what they hope will be the best Reflector Paxton has had. At every bi-monthly meeting, interesting programs are presented. At one meeting Paxton’s foreign exchange student, Joe Pascoati, gave an informative talk on the relationship between the Latin Language and his native Portuguese. This year, for the first time, the Latin Club entered a float in the Homecoming Parade, with which they took a second place; on October 16, the club held a very successful community bake sale. The huge partition in the gym which was to divide the P.E. classes was not in operation most of the year, and, in a sense, co-educational classes were instituted for the first time. An enlarged P.E. teaching staff improved the student-teacher ratio of the classes. With more teachers and smaller classes, greater attention was given to individual students. Besides the old stand-bys of basketball, tumbling, softball, vol-leybal, whiffleball, and calisthenics, new programs were added. They included wrestling, boxing, square dancing, and ball gymnastics. Their High School life began with a week of initiation, and then followed the usual well-established pattern. They sponsored parties, built Homecoming floats and earned money for Prom. Everyone agreed it was Front Row: Diana Lower, Secretary; Mike Johnson, President; Julie Apland, Student Council Representative Row 2: Dean Dillon, Student Council Representative; Linda Abrahanson, worth the work, and it was termed a huge success. The Junior Class play, “Hillbilly Weddin”, was a first financially and dramatically. In keeping with their character as a class, the first Senior class to attend the new high school and the first to graduate from there, was the first class to choose to graduate in robes of more than one color . . . they chose to have maroon robes for the boys and white ones for the girls. It can truly be said that the Class of ’66 succeeded, at least, in their effort to be different. During Homecoming season the members planned and constructed a float using the theme “Mustangs’ New Horizon”. The class play, Mystery in the Library, was a major highlight during the year. To the Juniors, a class play proved to be a new and enjoyable experience. Moreover, they were the first group to employ the improved stage and lighting facilities in the new gym. A winter fantasy of “White Christmas’’ came alive at the Junior-sponsored Christmas Dance, which was held on Friday evening, Dec- First How: Judy Donaldson, Student Council Representative; Jim Swanson, President; Barb Jones, Treasurer Second How: Sandy Maulding, Secre- ember 17. Planning and preparation for the 1966 Junior-Senior Prom naturally entailed many hours of hard work. Additional decisions were required since precedents had not been established for such events in the new building. Because the class play was only a moderate success financially, other sources of revenue had to be explored to support the prom expenses. Concession stands, coat-checks, bake sales, and special projects were sponsored. Extensive research was conducted on the possibilities for a future memorial to classmate Ed Peterson. tary; Linda Rattenborg, Vice-President Top Row: Mark Thompson, Student Council Representative; John Swengel, Student Council Representative NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Members Jack Fields Janet Guthrie Rodger Lubben William Nuss John Reep James Swanson John Swengel Sandra Troxel Marla Yancey Dianne Zumw'alt Certificate of Merit Judy Albers Philip Hass Nancy Hoover Roberta Krueger Rick Nimon Jill Wilson MUSIC AWARDS Flute Duet—First Mary Krukoski Flute Quartet—First Janet Guthrie Saxophone Duet—Second Julia Branson Vocal Octet Second Sandy Maulding Nancy Hoover Colleen McCabe Linda Adkins John Swengel Vocal Solo—Third Bonnie Hustedt Vocal Quintet—Third Linda Adkins Sandy Maulding Nancy Hoover SPEECH AWARDS District — Extemporaneous Speaking— Colleen McCabe, Fourth F.F.A. Then on August 31, these green little Freshmen became the first Freshman class in the new Paxton High School. They surprisingly found upper-classmen (and teachers) just as green and as confused as they were. It took a while for everyone to get used to the new school. For once, Freshmen were not the only ones late to classes. Throughout the year, the Freshmen proved themselves successful in many fields. Their football and basketball teams had good seasons, Front Row: Chris Martin, Treasurer; Rick Vaughn, President; Terry Dunnan, Student Council Representative Row 2: Tom Swengel, Student Council 154 t 'le.sf net OS . and show promise for excellent varsity teams. The Freshman Homecoming float, “Extinguish the Comets’ won fourth place. The Freshman clas: was well represented on the semester Honor Roll. Many Freshman received awards in football, basketball, and F.F.A. They sponsored an all-school party on April 15. During the year the Freshman class sponsored several bake sales. Some of the money they earned, they donated to the Mr. “D.” Memorial Scholarship Fund. Like all classes, they stirred up their share of trouble, but only to let people know that the class of ’69 had arrived.
