Freshmen Orientation Our 1964 Freshman Week program was changed from an initiation to an orientation program, to acquaint the incoming Freshmen with our daily routine by means of a mock school day. Conducted on a small scale, with shortened class periods, the typical day included a general assembly, a briefing on the student handbook, and refreshments in the cafeteria during the two lunch periods. So they came—doubtful, joyful, perplexed, or sad. However, before the day was over, the Freshmen came to the conclusion that high school would be a different and very exciting experience for them. The week following Orientation was climaxed by the Freshman Party, which was sponsored by the Student Council. Welcome Freshmen! 10 So this is a High School Dance. Right: Here come the Freshmen. What did you say 2 2 was again.

Foreign Exchange Student The delight of the Senior class this year has been Petra van Kampen, our foreign exchange student from the Netherlands. Leaving her lovely home near Haarlem, she came to live with the Nobles and attend school in Paxton. Petra carried four subjects and was active in such extra-curricular activities as Girls’ Chorus, A Cappella, Latin Club, Band, Student Council, and the National Honor Society. She played the bass fiddle in band, and has been known to play the recorder on occasion. In Student Council, she initiated ping-pong tournaments for interested students. Petra was enthusiastic and very eager to learn about us, our customs, and our country. Among other things, everyone admired her ability to speak and read several different languages. In fact, the whole community became quite attached to Petra, who was often seen in her native costume, giving talks before interested groups. Petra learned much, but she also taught us a great deal about her country, and about people in general. Time will not erase the memory of Petra, for she has become a part of Paxton High and its heritage. These methods of raising funds for this very worthwhile project have become annual activities for the Student Council A.F.S. Committee. 12
