19 6 5 REFLECTOR Paxton Community High School Paxton, Illinois PAXTON HI “Remember the time that—”, “I’ll never forget the time when—Memories crowd the thoughts of teachers and students who must leave the old building on Center Street. Each person looks down the halls with a twinge of sadness, then turns away toward the new school—suddenly, eagerly. In the following pages, the Reflector brings you “last time” pictures to help keep alive fond memories of events that have taken place in the classrooms, hallways, and the auditorium. Remember— Highlights 9 Organizations Page 31 Sports Page 73 People Page 93 Advertising Page 149 Acknowledgements Page 162 G H SCHOOL Familiar Sights At Center Street . . . the noisy, crowded cafeteria; the shop class; a surging, deafening stream of students in the hallways; jammed lockers; restless study hall students; the office crowded with students wanting tardy slips, or returning report cards; the whispering library students; those enlightening discussions held in uncomfortable classrooms; locker clean-up time; the booming intercom during morning exercises; the tricky fire doors; cramped half-lockers; and the dark, dingy underworld. School at PCHS will never be the same as it was on Center Street. Remember . . . 4 . . . the girls preparing foods in the Home Economics lab; the delicious odors floating through the hallways; the pep signs hanging in the auditorium and hallways; the muscle-straining exercises on the slippery gym floor; the janitor’s quarters in the noisy boiler room; the agony, the joy of school in P.C.H.S. Remember . . . . . . the old gym during P. E. classes; the old Home Economics lab; the large Agriculture room; the uncomfortable Biology lab; the dreaded chemistry lab; the paper-thin walls between the French class and the shorthand class; the mechanical drawing class; the slippery locker room floors; the sizzling radiators. These things constituted school at PCHS, Center Street. Remember . . . 7 HIGHLIGHTS “Highlights”—those things which make our school life much more interesting and meaningful. The following pages present many outstanding events and activities, from Homecoming to Prom, from Freshmen Orientation to Graduation. But this year is different. This year, for the last time, they are taking place at PCHS, Center Street. For the first time, not only the Seniors but the whole student body is looking back, remembering those school days on Center Street. Freshmen Orientation Our 1964 Freshman Week program was changed from an initiation to an orientation program, to acquaint the incoming Freshmen with our daily routine by means of a mock school day. Conducted on a small scale, with shortened class periods, the typical day included a general assembly, a briefing on the student handbook, and refreshments in the cafeteria during the two lunch periods. So they came—doubtful, joyful, perplexed, or sad. However, before the day was over, the Freshmen came to the conclusion that high school would be a different and very exciting experience for them. The week following Orientation was climaxed by the Freshman Party, which was sponsored by the Student Council. Welcome Freshmen! 10 So this is a High School Dance. Right: Here come the Freshmen. What did you say 2 2 was again. 11 Foreign Exchange Student The delight of the Senior class this year has been Petra van Kampen, our foreign exchange student from the Netherlands. Leaving her lovely home near Haarlem, she came to live with the Nobles and attend school in Paxton. Petra carried four subjects and was active in such extra-curricular activities as Girls’ Chorus, A Cappella, Latin Club, Band, Student Council, and the National Honor Society. She played the bass fiddle in band, and has been known to play the recorder on occasion. In Student Council, she initiated ping-pong tournaments for interested students. Petra was enthusiastic and very eager to learn about us, our customs, and our country. Among other things, everyone admired her ability to speak and read several different languages. In fact, the whole community became quite attached to Petra, who was often seen in her native costume, giving talks before interested groups. Petra learned much, but she also taught us a great deal about her country, and about people in general. Time will not erase the memory of Petra, for she has become a part of Paxton High and its heritage. These methods of raising funds for this very worthwhile project have become annual activities for the Student Council A.F.S. Committee. 12 A.F.S. Dinner at Clara Peterson The A.F.S. Committee, composed of five members elected from the Student Council, are in charge of money-making projects for the American Field Service Program. Last year the committee was elected just in time to plan the annual American Field Service Banquet. This was served at Clara Peterson School by Student Council members. All those at the Banquet considered the evening very successful and most enjoyable. This year the A.F.S. Committee was in charge of the American Field Service Christmas tree, and again sponsored the Banquet. Seated left to right: Valerie Mattingly, Petra van Kampen and Marcia Hill; Standing: Jerry Rodeen and Charles Newman American Field Service 13 Homecoming Events Homecoming . . . election of a queen and her court . . . the annual parade . . . the before-game rally . . . the football game . . . the Homecoming dance ... all these events are equally important to students and Alumni. Bright blue and gold . . . excitement in the crisp air . . . hearty school spirit and enthusiasm ... a dummy thrown into the bonfire ... a victory cheer sweeping over the crowd . . . lots of fun ... so Homecoming, 1965, arrived. The annual Homecoming parade began on Market Street, winding its way to the football field. There, after the dummy was thrown into the victory fire, the queen and the winners of the float-judging were announced. The stands were filled to capacity at the Homecoming game, despite the nippy weather. Alumni and students were 14 there to urge the team onward, but the game ended with a Rantoul victory. The Homecoming dance, “Monte Carlo,” was held after the game. Alumni who came to the gayly decorated auditorium for the dance were reunited with old school chums; and high school memories were the topic of many conversations. Above: Homecoming game with Rantoul Left: Announcement of 1964 Homecoming Queen Queens The highlight of the Homecoming program was the presentation of our lovely Homecoming Queen, Connie Burklund. Her very attractive attend- ants, Kathy Hustedt, Sheila Moulding, and Kathy Swanson, also lent their pep and personality to the half-time ceremonies. Later, beautiful and charming, they all attended the Homecoming dance, “Monte Carlo,” to assist in crowning Queen Connie. Kathy Swanson Sheila Moulding Katherine Hustedt Above: Queen Connie Burklund Floats Are A Part Of Homecoming In the float competition, the Freshmen received first place, with a Mustang resting his iron hooves on a pair of dice. The Junior class float, the Sophomore class float, and the Senior class train received 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places respectively. The clubs winning recognition were: the Drama Club, first place; the marching Pep Club, under the direction of Mrs. Benear, second place; and the hard-working Pep Band, third place. The float preparation was among the first events to take place. After the completed floats were paraded and judged, they stood on the football field, alone, for everyone was watching the dummy of Rantoul being thrown into the licking tongues of Paxton's fire. Later, at the dance held after the game, Connie Burklund, our queen, was escorted to her throne by football co-captains, Denny Short and Darrel Seim. The Queen’s court, Kathy Hustedt, Kathy Swanson, and Sheila Moulding, were escorted by Wayne Johnson, Denny Eichelberger, and Tim Schofield. Upper: Homecoming Court and their escorts. Lower left: Bonfire after the parade. Lower right: Pep rally. 17 On November 12th and 13th the Junior Class presented a very humorous, satirical play entitled “Hillbilly WeddinV’ The play was centered around Paw Belchsnickle’s finding a husband for his oldest and dirtiest Junior Class Play 18 daughter, Ceelie. Helping to complicate and confuse the plot was the appearance of a “dude”, Ronald Maxwell. The members of the cast were: Linda Abrahamson, Priscilla Bradley, Russ Brown, Fred Carlson, George Carpenter, Melissa Dunnan, Charlene Fox, Mary Griggs, Bill Hansen, Joan Hardman, Mike Johnson, Patsy Mattingly, Kathy Rinkenberger, Carol Rollins, Doug Smith, and Ron Thompson. Two of the main contests this year were Speech and Music Contest. Speech Contest was held at Tolono on February 13, where Paxton received second place in total points, being edged out by Champaign who placed first. Placing were as follows: “High Window, second place, with cast of Luwana Tarlton, Judi Rine, Denny Eichelberger, Bob Frump, and Sheila Roisland; original oration, second place, Charles Newman; extemporan- eous speaking, second place, Pat De-Muth; serious reading, fourth place. Bob Frump; oratorical declamation, fourth place, Doug Houston; humorous reading, fourth place, Mary Griggs; verse reading, fifth place, Judi Rine. Music Contest was held at Decatur on March 13. The band and chorus entries consisted of solos and ensembles. They all made fine showings, for which they should be commended. Reigning for the evening were the King and Queen of Christmas, Dan Coplea and Linda Adkins, chosen by student vote. Although the weatherman tried his best to discourage attendance, a fine band and the holiday spirit of the students resulted in a merry time for the subjects of King and Queen Christmas. The Christmas Program on Wednesday afternoon ended the school year of 1964. It included a chorus of songs by the French classes, a play by the Thespians, and several numbers by groups from the Music department. After dismissal, the students happily rushed home, looking forward with joy to seven long days of school-less vacation, gleefully shouting “Merry Christmas” as they dashed out the doors. 20 Upper right—Refreshment Table Lower right—Decorating Christmas tree Upper left—Freshman Madrigals Middle—French Class Lower—Refreshments Left upper—Christmas Fantasy below—A Cappella Choir Scenes Right upper—King and Queen - Christmas below—Girls’ Chorus 21 Musical Get Up and Go The Music Department presented a musical comedy entitled “ Get Up and Go”, on April 2 and 3, 1964. A boys’ and girls’ school held in the same building doesn’t seem like a too-complicated plot, but the fact that these schools are separated by a locked door does complicate the situation. The plot thickens when the two teachers clash. They are both running their schools in the red but they will not admit it. An uncle, supposedly of one of the girls, comes to the school to help out and proceeds to modernize it. This, plus the fact that the niece of the old maid and the nephew of the old man fall in love and want to get married, leads to confusion. Everything ends well, though, and the two teachers get married. Fine music and two excellent casts made the musical even more interesting. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the two evenings of humorous entertainment provided by our Music Department. 22 Cast in garden scene Soda Shoppe A Teacher’s Conference Spring Concert Concert Band A Cappella Choir Last May the Music Department presented its annual Spring Concert for the enjoyment of the Paxton community. The Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Harry Swenson, presented a short program consisting of selections such as “Night at the Ballet” and “Marriage of Figaro,” which were played at Contest. The A Cappella and Girls’ Chorus, directed by Mr. Neal Fluegel, also presented their contest numbers. 23 Spring Prom Festiva Romo “Festiva Roma” was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom, held on May 15, 1964, in the High School gym. The theme was carried out by the use of two rows of four majestic white columns each, leading to a purple draped statue standing impressively in the center. The walls were of purple drapes, with gold streamers. Allen Johnson was the master of ceremonies. The welcome was given by Jerry Rodeen, president of the Junior Class, and the response was given by Gary Chapman, Senior Class president. Elected to reign for the evening were Joanne Harkins and Jerry Ulrich. They were attended by Connie Burk-lund and Denny Short. 24 Processional after the king and queen were crowned. 26 Senior Play, Anastasia The Senior class chose “Anastasia for their last class play. “Anastasia is the story of a young Russian princess who had been missing for several years after a war. Unexpectedly, she appeared when a trio of greedy fortune seekers (played by Tim Moore, Rick Shields, and Chip Pacey) plotted to substitute an actress for the princess and collect some of the royal treasure. They chose a young beggar girl from the streets (played by Lynda Hoover) who happened to fit all the qualifications, and who also happened to be the real princess. This intriguing play was directed by Mr. Jones. In the cast were the following people: Chip Pacey, Gaye Nuss, Rick Shields, Tim Moore, Russ Anderson, Lynda Hoover, Steve Kelley, Mike Griffin, Merrily Jones, Gary Chapman, Rhonda Rattenborg, Pat Sigler, and Ken Rohlfing. Lower right: Senior Class prophecy on Class Day. The crowning event of each Senior year at Paxton High is Class Day. Feelings vary among the Seniors, who realize they’ll not be back at P.C.H.S. again. At that time too, the “green” Freshmen progress to Sophomores, being replaced by a newer, “greener” group from across the street. This day’s activities create the proper atmosphere for the closing day of school—organized chaos—a bit frenzied—a bit nostalgic—excited—anticipatory confusion. Baccalaureate and Commencement The day that almost everyone has partially dreaded, yet eagerly awaited, finally has come. The Senior Class of 1964, walking down the aisle in their traditional caps and gowns, take their Baccalaureate processional, places on the stage while parents watch with pride, and a touch of sadness. Each year, for more than thirty years. Seniors have crossed the P.C.H.S. stage to received their diplomas. Then, after the ceremonies, they have wandered through the school, remembering. But the thoughts of what lay ahead have often caused them to turn and walk away. So it was this year. Many of the graduates had proudly received honors, yet even they hated to leave. The students graduating in the top ten per cent of their class wore gold cords around their necks and are pictured at right. Pictured next to them are: Larry Turner, who won the Condit Scholarship; Jerry Ulrich, who won the Denny Darr award; and Glenn Currie, who won the National Honor Society Scholarship. ORGANIZATIONS Organizations add spice to the regular routine of school, but they also teach students the qualities of leadership, self-reliance, and dependability. Next year the new high school will offer an improved and expanded extracurricular program, but we must not forget what has been accomplished in those years at the Center Street school. During that time organizations have come and gone - and those which have survived are ready to move ahead into a new program. First row: Rosemary Petersen, Patsy Mattingly, Val Mattingly, Donna Zumwalt, Leah Yancey Second row: Marcia Hill, Petra Van Kampen, Kathy Hustedt, Mr. Kingston Third row: Bob Frump, Rick Schimanski, John Peterson, Doug Smith, Jerry Rodeen Fourth row: Dave Sims, Jim Swanson, Charles Newman Absent: Dean Dillon Student Council The main purpose of our Student Council is to provide a link between the faculty, the administration, and the student body. This group is responsible for planning many of the important school activities including Freshman Orientation, Homecoming, A. F. S. Project, elections, and assembly programs. OFFICERS Jerry Rodeen, President; Bob Frump, Vice President; Kathy Hustedt, Treasurer; Patsy Mattingly, Secretary Student-Faculty Board The six members who compose the Student-Faculty Board have attempted to promote a better understanding between students and faculty. Despite many problems, they did finally manage to arrive at an understanding with the Student Council, and offered suggestions about the duties of the Board, to be put into the Student Council constitution. Paxton High is the only school with a Student-Faculty Board, and we should strive to make it an organization of such effectiveness that other schools will be proud to copy our idea. 33 National Honor Society The National Honor Society recognizes students of high character, leadership, honor, service, and scholarship. New probationary members were taken into the society in the fall, then inducted as full-fledged members in February. At the end of the year society members, parents, and faculty attended the annual banquet. The most outstanding accomplishment of this organization is the awarding of a scholarship to a senior each Class Day. The money for these scholarships is raised by the work of the N.H.S. members. This year the N.H.S. received a new felt banner bearing their emblem and a beautiful new plaque. The plaque, which lists the roster of the N.H.S. members, was donated by Mr. Condit, and has been placed in the second floor hall, above the bulletin board. Both of these will be welcome additions to the new school. Front row, I to r: L. Miller, D. Zumwalt, D. Sharp, J. Bowen, P. Bradley, P. Krueger, P. Mattingly, M. Wesslund. 2nd row: K. Hustedt, S. Reflectors to sell, copy to write and type, pictures to take, rulers to buy, pages to draw, pictures to fit, letters to write, advertising to sell, announcements to make, bills to total, flashbulbs to salvage, contracts to sign, deadlines to meet—all combine to make a typical day in the life of an ambitious yearbook worker. This staff works hard to present a well-rounded yearbook, covering every interest available in our school, for the ultimate wish of all the members of the staff is to make each yearbook one of the memories for the students of PCHS. Mgr.; Mary Griggs; Jack Stone, phot.; Nancy Hoover; Barbara Reep; Leah Yancey, Editor 36 Blue Gold Every day during the fourth period, the Blue and Gold staff could be found fitting copy, writing articles, planning a layout, collecting information on scores and awards, getting ideas from other papers, and always, always typing. This year has witnessed sweeping changes in the Blue and Gold. For the first time it has been subsidized by the Board of Education. Furthermore, the size of the staff has been cut almost in half, and many more articles were submitted by the student body rather than the staff members themselves. As in the past years, the Blue and Gold staff has provided the always important student newspaper for Paxton High School. They entered a float in the Homecoming parade, provided stage hands and make-up artists for the class plays, and co-sponsored the Stunt and Talent Show with the REFLECTOR staff. However, their biggest and most successful undertaking was Thespian Night, when three student-directed, student-acted plays were presented. It was the first such undertaking, and we hope it won’t be the last. Thespians We must not forget the Drama Club which was composed of students who wished to earn enough points to become Thespians. They were usually assigned the lowly tasks, but often had chances to show their acting talent, also. Of course, without the Drama Club there would be no future Thespians. Meeting once a month, all club programs were presented by members, working in teams of two. These demonstrations ranged from computers to stereophonic sound systems. Club officers, elected at the end of the previous year, were President, Doug Houston; Vice President, Mike Kingston; Secretary, Alexa Noble; and Treasurer, Don Ouinter. First row: Mike Stark, John Tucker, John Bankson, Paul Tucker, Steve Pacey, Fred Lowry Second row: Mr. Vickers, Jack Stone, Petra van Kampen, Doug Houston, Alan Johnson, Don Ouinter Third row: Mike Kingston, Bernard Hartt, Bill Hansen, Alexa Noble, Stan Benz Library Club The Library Club is composed of students who are interested in library science. Although small in number, the Library Club performs many useful services. They keep the library orderly, dusted, and shining. They also help other students and faculty members locate books and reference material for term papers, reports, etc. In addition to their regular tasks this year, the Library Club entertained the community by having an author’s tea for Mrs. Grace McGary, author of two books. At that time she autographed copies of her newest book, On Business for the King. First row, left to right: Joe Hudson, Mary Griggs, Mardella Andrews, Denny Reitz, Ramona Andrews Second row: Mr. Griggs, Linda Holland, Eileen Glazik, Mary Wheeler, Anna Marie Caspers, Sidney Booth 42 Projector's Club The Projector’s Club’s purpose is to aid teachers in the use of PCHS visual aids with their teaching. Its members are trained in the operation of the school projectors. Because of this training they are able to show films for classes, repair films, and repair projectors which suffer in the hands of amateurs. Their training is very useful to the members as well as to the school. This year the club was in charge of showing the Student Council film, “The Mouse that Roared”, and their presentation was well done. Seated: Jack Miller, Dick Harrell, Dennis Horner, Max Martin Standing: Steve Pacey, George Carpenter, Mr. Smith, Mark Thompson, Dan Coplea, Allan Johnson, Ronald Thompson 43 First row, left to right: John Bankson, David Lindsfrom, Marilyn McQueen, Rosemary Petersen, Sharon Denison, Bill Ingold, Kathy Barr, Judy Donaldson, Anna Marie Caspers, Mary Ann Wesslund, Dianne Zumwalt, Julia Branson, Mrs. Veatch Second row: Leah Yancey, Patty Turner, Marla Yancey, Marlena Goodwin, Nancy Hoover, Carol Carlson, Bonnie Hartt, Ramona Andrews, Bill Nuss, John Tucker, Pat Hummel, Merriann Harweger Third row: Carol Rohlfing, Sheila Roisland, Regina Cole, Marsha Hancock, Paul Tucker, Steve Pacey, Mardella Andrews, Cathy Casey, Janet Guthrie, Kathy Dyer, Julie Apland, Melissa Dunnan Fourth row; Rick Volden, Lonnie Bauer, John Swengel, Jim Swanson, Lane Belson, Jack Fields, Ted Johnson, Mike Marron, Charles Newman, George Carpenter, Sandy Troxel Fifth row: Rick Nimon, Stan Benz, Petra Van Kampen, Alexa Noble, Dave Swengel, Bernard Hartt, Bill Hansen, Steve Benz, Linda Abra-hamson, Mary Krukoski, Jane Krukoski, Max Martin Latin Club The Latin Club is an organization devoted mainly to students interested in the Latin language and Roman culture. The many interests of this group indicate that its gives promise of becoming one of Paxton High’s more prominent organizations. However, the highlight of the year was the Roman Banquet, held on March 6. Weeks before, the committees began their planning and preparation. That evening the past came to life as Latin Club members, wearing robes and togas, feasted at a sumptuous banquet served by slaves. Everything was made as authentic as possible. It was much fun and the evening was very successful. Latin Club Roman Banquet 45 Marching Band Leaders Marching ahead of the Paxton High band, spelling out P-A-X-T-O-N, were our Letter Girls. They have become a welcome addition to the marching band this year, adding color and spirit to the half-time show during football games. With their help, the band was able to produce some clever and original formations. We hope that they will become a permanent addition to our marching band. The high-stepping baton twirlers were teamed up with the letter girls following the head drum majorette who effectively led the band, helping them keep time. 46 Baton Twirlers: Jennie Joyce, Kathy Barr, Becky Rodeen Letter Girls: Patty Hummel, Sheila Roisland, Pam Bradley, Ruth Busboom, Judy Rine, Lucreta Miller, Alternate—Linda Rattenborg Drum Majorette: Pam Bittle Music Department This year instead of having officers, the Music Department has a Choral Council and a Band Council. Members of the Band Council are: JoAnne Bowen, Manager; Carolyn Lindgren, Assistant Manager; Barbara Reep, Secretary; Rick Volden, Treasurer; Donna Sharp, Librarian; Pat Harrington, Assistant Librarian; Pam Bittle, Drum Majorette; Diana Lower, Assistant Drum Majorette. It met Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the fourth period. It was one of the “refinement” courses offered to teach the students the fundamentals of singing and reading music. The techniques which the chorus learned were to advance them in musical studies for future years in the music department. Although the chorus elected no officers, it had a representative on the choral council. This year at P.C.H.S. our Madrigal group began its work of memorizing those songs. Any Madrigal group is supposed to be able to sing without piano accompaniment, which is what our group of singers achieved. The type of music that the Madrigals sang was fast, cheery, and usually told a story. Each singer had to be able to vary his volume, mood, and pitch during these songs. Because this is rather difficult for an inexperienced singer, Madrigal members were selected by audition; to find the musical talent necessary to sing these songs. The Madrigals sang at a hootenanny after a football game, for the Christmas Concert, for programs at school and churches, and for a program at the Legion Hut. The Madrigals also represented P.C.H.S. at solo and ensemble contest on March 13. First row: Linda Miller, Pat Harrington, Carolyn Lindgren, Donna Sharp Second row: Marla Yancey, Carol Rohlfing, Alexa Noble, Judy Rine, Ruth Busboom Third row: Ted Johnson, Dave Swengel, Bill Hansen, Jim Swanson, Charles Newman 52 Freshman Madrigals One of the extra-curricular activities offered to this year’s Freshmen was Freshman Madrigals. It was a specialized group of the more talented voices singing Introduction to Madrigal songs. They performed during half time at three of the home games, featuring numbers done without the lights. Next, for the public enjoyment, they presented a pre-Christmas concert. The band also participated in the Ford County Band Festival at Gibson City. They went to Gibson in the afternoon and practiced with other bands from the county and surrounding towns, and in the evening presented a concert for interested people. During April the band played at contest. Joining with the chorus for the Spring Concert, the band helped provide an enjoyable evening for the public by presenting different songs and arrangements from Broadway musicals. 55 Stage Band Third row: Jim Robertson, Carolyn lindgren, Petra Van Kampen Second row: Ken Mennenga, Kathy Barr, Mike Stark, Marcia Hill, Mary Griggs, Mike Ander- son, Dave Swengel First row: Pat Harrington, Diane Johnson, JoAnne Bowen, Donna Sharp, John Peterson, Barb Reep 56 Second row: Mike Stark, Ken Mennenga, Kathy Barr, Mike Anderson, Mary Griggs, Marcia Hill, Dorothy McFarland, Petra Van Kampen, Roger Abrahamson, John Bankson, Mr. Hart First row: Barb Reep, Pat Harrington, Carolyn George, JoAnne Bowen, Diane Johnson, Donna Sharp, Carolyn Lindgren, Alexa Noble, John Peterson Pep Band 57 58 First row, left to right: Margo Campbell, Cathy Smith, Brenda Mills, Patty Purtill, Patty Lindauer, Ann Stuckey, Virginia Wiley, Cindy Teesdale, Karen Roy Second row: Janet Albers, Barb Tavenner, Kathy Donnelly, Pam Cunningham, Linda Lewis, Lola Romine, Linda Holland, Nancy Frette, Janet McBain, Mrs. Yancey Third row: Ramona Andrews, Eileen Jamison, Mary Wheeler, Diane Williams, Diana Lower, Connie Swan, Caryl Wesslund, Rinda Kenner, Dorothy McFarland rourlh row.- Ruth Ann Engelbrecht, Paula Bertrand, Patty Harris, Donna Harris, Julie Apland, Ann Miller, Carolyn George, Carol Trail, Jean Dunlap OFFICERS Seated, left to righJ: Carolyn George, Secretary; Dianna Lower, President; Julie Apland, Treasurer Standing: Caryl Wesslund, Vice President; Dorothy McFarland, Degree Chairman; Barb Tavenner, Historian; Linda Holland, Parliamentarian The Illinois Association of Future Homemakers of America was founded in 1944, and the local Paxton F.H.A. Chapter was organized and formed in 1947. The purpose of the F.H.A. is to train tomorrow’s homemakers and to improve family life. The club also emphasizes the importance of a worthwhile home and community life. The F.H.A. belongs to both the Illinois Future Homemakers of America and the National Future Homemakers of America. The highlights of the year for the club were many. Everyone pitched in to help with a potluck dinner and Future Homemakers of America chicken barbeque. At Christmas, jointly with the F.F.A., they went caroling and had a pizza party afterward. Later, they participated in the annual Spring style show. At other meetings they have had talks and demonstrations on welfare and cake decorating. Future Farmers Vocational agriculture is a major division of our school curriculum, and F.F.A., its student organization, provides extra-curricular activities for its members. The past year the Paxton F.F.A. chapter continued its fine record. An American Heritage essay contest, “Power of the Ballot”, sponsored by them, received even better response than did last year’s contest. At a student assembly the group showed slides of the Eastern United States trip five of its members took as a part of this program. They also sponsored several dinners and a conservation assembly. On February 20, 1965, Paxton won outstanding sectional awards in eight of seventeen categories. The members of Lettermen’s Club are athletes who have won letters in football, basketball, track, or golf. They received their letters for meeting special requirements set up in each sport. The club adopted as a project the raising of funds to erect an “all events” bulletin board at the new high school. During the football season the club sold booster tags and peanuts. At basketball games they took care of the score board. At an auction they sold cakes and other items to finish their project. At the end of the year the funds for the project’s completion were presented to the Board of Education. 65 Lettermen's Aciivities Left to right: Mr. Shields, Mr. Starkey, Mr. Newman, Terry Hustedt, Dennis Short, I and Mr. Zuchowski 66 Each year the Lettermen's Club adopts a project which contributes to the betterment of the school. The purpose is to improve some aspect of either the athletic department or the school. The class of ’59-’60 sold stadium cushions and hats and then purchased new football suits for the team. During 1960-61, the Lettermen's Club purchased socks for the athletic department. In '61-’62 their project was revising the sportsmanship code. For the past four years the project has been a large one. In 1962 the club began raising money for an information board which would list school and athletic events in such a way that the public might see the listings. When the community decided to build a new high school, the club planned for the erection of a board in front of the school to match the design. Five one-hundred dollar bonds toward the cost of the erection were presented to Mr. Starkey, the president of the Board of Education, this spring by the past presidents of the club. The board should be finished and in operation the opening day of school in our new Paxton High School. Education Chapter For a number of years Paxton has had a diversified occupations program. D. O. students learn a trade, and earn money, while still attending school. It is an opportunity of which many Paxton students have taken advantage. Last year these students organized the D. O. Club. This year a state-wide organization of similar groups has given them the new name of “Illinois Cooperative Education Chapter. Our chapter, sponsored by Mr. Thorstenson, has thirteen members. The purpose of G.A.A. is expressed by the pledge, “I promise to uphold the ideals of the Girls’ Athletic Association by promoting interest in athletics and the out-of-doors; by living so that I may be healthy and strong; by making good sportsmanship a constant factor in my conduct. Wearing gold vests with blue letters, blue pleated skirts, long-sleeved white blouses, white tennis shoes, white socks, and the well-known blue tarns, they were colorful and energetic—a fitting tribute to our teams. Even though the club was unable to support the team at away games until the tournament this year, their spirit at home games wasn’t dampened. They sat in the first six rows of the center section, shouting, cheering, and helping the cheerleaders urge the team onward to victory. The Pep Club also prepared a marching routine for the annual homecoming parade, in which they swished blue and gold shakers to the rhythm of their chants. They received second place in presentation, but a first in spirit and enthusiasm. Therefore, we must give credit to not only the teams and cheerleaders, but also the enthusiastic group who supports them. The Pep Club of Paxton High School is well-known to our basketball and football opponents, and we hope that this club will continue to set a good example of sportsmanship and spirit in our school. u Pep Club SPORTS Sports are, and always have been, a very important aspect of PCHS. Beginning in the fall with football and ending the year in the spring with track, sports exemplify the spirit and enthusiasm of our school. These athletic activities are rewarding to both the participant and the spectator. Even the girls participate in sports through G.A.A. and P.E. classes. However, the players have played and the cheerleaders have cheered their last game at PCHS, Center Street. One of the finest victories was the 54-55 victory over the Schlarman Hill-toppers. Other conference wins were those against Oakwood and Watseka. The squad of eleven, having constantly improved through the season, finished the last season ever to be played while in the old gym. Many memorable games have been played at P.C.H.S.—Center Street. Many fans have cheered many teams to victory, many voices have been raised in the Paxton Loyalty there. May this enthusiasm and support follow the team to its new and larger gym. Along with such work comes perfection, and perhaps glory. With these goals in mind, the Mustangs began to work— running, jumping, throwing, etc. After many hours of hard, hard training, made effective by good coaching, the team was ready to grind out a successful season. In the spring of ’64, Paxton’s track team, coached by Mr. Zuchowski, finished their season with a respectable record. A few records were broken; Paxton won a triangular meet with Rankin and Cissna Park; Bob Caisse placed first in the half mile at the Paris Relays. In the middle — between the experienced varsity and ignorant Freshmen—is the Sophomore team. These boys have played one year and, deciding they like football enough to work, are back to try again. The 1964 team came back with an impressive Freshman record and were ready to defend it. Again this year, a new formation had to be learned; but after becoming familiar with it, the team seemed to prefer the “pigeon-toed tee.” Coached by Mr. Zimmerman, these Sophomores have become a promise for a winning varsity season. A less than expected turnout cancelled plans for separate Freshman and Sophomore teams, but the athletic department plans to try for two again in 1965. Under the direction of Coach Zuchowski and Coach Zimmerman the team competed in several meets. We look forward to a continued expansion of our athletic program with golf as a permanent feature. Cross Country Cross Country, a new addition to the athletic department program this year, was coached by Mr. Dallagicomo. Cross Country consists of two teams of about twenty boys each, who run a race over an area of two miles. The boy to come in first receives one point, the second—two points, etc. Therefore, the first five boys on each team to come in, place, so that each team has five members who place. The team that receives the least number of points wins. The boys worked very hard and were successful in winning almost all of their meets. There are teams in each class and tournaments are held in each sport. The girls are hoping that in the future they will be able to compete in track meets and sports with girls from other schools. Varsity Left to right: Linda Miller, Melissa Dunnan, Connie Burklund, Joan Hardman, Kathy Swanson, Patsy Mattingly 90 Cheerleaders P.C.H.S. has three squads of cheerleaders - a Freshman squad, a Sophomore - Junior Varsity squad, and a Varsity squad. The Sophomore and Freshman squads are future material for cheerleaders of our new school, but they also served Center Street East very well in leading cheers and helping our Freshman and Sophomore teams on to victory. Freshman and Sophomore Cheerleaders Our cheerleaders are experts in the science of controlling a crowd. This is easy to see if you watch them in action during a game. They are jumping, yelling, flashes of blue and gold, but every movement is precise and swift. An arm will come flying down through the air and stop suddenly, at a critical point, then slice back up, coaxing a deafening roar from the crowd. A hand will open from its tightly gripped fist, and begin clapping in rhythm with stamping feet. Then a chant will break out slowly until the air seems to crackle with emotion and loyalty. Such is the fine job our cheerleaders perform for the team and school; keep up the good work! The students, faculty, administration, and school personnel all combine to make our school function smoothly and successfully. A beautiful new school or an old, under-sized building without people are equally useless. Although the “people” of PCHS will be housed in a new and different building next year, the substance and spirit will be of the same high caliber as they were on Center Street. Senior Class The Class of 1965 has ended their high school with a very eventful year. Although they came in last with their entry for Homecoming, they certainly put all the rest of their efforts into making Homecoming the most enthusiastic ever. The Senior dance, “Prison Break”, was one of the most successful of the year. The class decided to purchase and dedicate a placque in memory of Stanley Marshall. They also hope to present to the school flags representing each foreign country from which Paxton has welcomed a foreign exchange student. The Senior class play was another interesting and successful effort. Many graduating seniors will shed a tear, remembering all the fun they had at P.C.H.S., whether they are going to admit it or not. They began their busy year by entering a float in the annual Homecoming parade, and received a second place. Next, this busy class sponsored the Christmas dance, using the theme “Christmas Paradise.” Christmas trees and a beautiful snow scene helped in presenting the theme. In the spring the Juniors planned and sponsored the Junior-Senior prom, with an oriental theme in pink and white. The dance was well planned and beautifully executed . During Homecoming, their float, “Cage Um, received third place. At Christmas, the King and Queen of the Christmas Dance were selected from the Sophomore Class. In the spring, they sold Mustang pennants as a money-making project. The Class Day Dance was sponsored by the Sophomore Class and was considered to be very successful. This was the first year there had been on orientation program, and it proved very successful. The remainder of the year, too, was very active. At the end of the first week of school the Frosh were honored at the annual Freshman Dance. Their Homecoming float, “Shake, Rattle, and Roll,” won first place. They also proved themselves very successful in football and basketball. When they entered, they were “green.” But they had the enthusiasm and spirit needed to conquer high school. They succeeded quite well. Paxton High School considers itself especially fortunate in having Mr. Thompson Shields as its principal, to administer the operation of the high school. Many times we have wondered how one person can find the time and energy to meet as many varied problems as he does during a normal day. Mr. C. C. Newman, as Paxton’s Superintendent of Schools, has been very busy for many months with the planning and supervision of the building and equipping of our new high school building. Newman Board of Education First row, left to right: Dr. Glen Calhoun, Mr. Rolland Starkey, Mr. Wayne Niewold, Mr. Elwood Stagen Second row: Mr. Ralph Schimanski, Mr. Lee R. Carlson, Mr. Vernon A. Swanson During the past year the Board of Education, in addition to performing the routine tasks necessary to the effective operation of a school system, has been very busy making final preparations for the construction and completion of the new high school. We find our Board of Education at the very heart of the Paxton school unit, for these seven members are directly responsible for the policies which affect all the schools in our community. The past year has indeed held many challenges and decisions to be faced by the Paxton Board of Education. Among these issues are such things as curriculum study and planning, salaries, budgets, the purchase of equipment for all departments of the new school, policy changes, and the approval of new teachers. They will be welcomed improvements over the facilities of the Center Street school. We will enjoy these novelties, but the old school will still hold a nostalgic fascination for all who have studied there. Dwelling in the past is pleasant, but the future holds much promise. The Seniors have ended their high school years. Those years in the old school have become their past and the past of those who will care for the reestablishment of old traditions in their new setting. Still . . we shall remember you well.
