Jack Stone Third row: Kathy Dunnan, Jane Lundy, Joan Hardman, Connie Burklund 4 To Mrs. Ireland Teacher and librarian for twenty-seven years, Mrs. Ireland served as an inspiration to the students and faculty of Paxton because of her responsiveness, devotion, and sincerity. Carrying armloads of books to and from the library . . . making students’ problems her own . . . working for the community—for these we will remember Mrs. Ireland. Dedication To Mr. Smith As industrial education teacher and assistant principal, then as guidance counsellor and Student Council advisor Mr. Smith served the students of Paxton for twelve years. Those who know him will remember his friendliness, vital personality, and activity in and out of school. Mr. Smith and his family will always be welcome in Paxton. 5 School is a chain of events, broken occasionally by homework or exams. Represented in this section are these activities of the past year. From Freshman Week until Class Day, such events are our measure of time and the things we work for. They make studying worthwhile and school something more than a list of assignments. Highlights are the things which make school interesting and worth remembering. 6 I wanna hold your han-an-an-an-an-and. 8 Freshman Week Boys clad in knee pants and pajama tops . . . girls with their hair hanging and their faces half made-up .. . they came. Green . . . but no greener than most Freshman classes. They came with some apprehension, but stayed to enjoy it. At the Initiation Assembly we found that they could take it . . . that they were good sports . . . and that we liked them. At the Welcome Dance which climaxed Freshman week we let them know it. Welcome to Paxton High, Freshmen! We Had twenty-three percent fewer cavities. Goo-Goo, Gaa-Gaa C’mon, Romeno, Babe Sure doesn’t taste like tomato juice! Contact “Mt. Zion Burns” Homecoming There was a grand procession of bright color, blue and gold predominating. The chanting Pep Club marched around the bonfire. Everyone pressed closer to the fire watching eagerly, held in suspense —then, as Don Jones threw “Mt. Zion” into the fire, a long-awaited shout burst from everyone! The flames leaped up, consuming the dummy and casting a glow over everything. They touched each excited face with an orange glow. This spectacle was something to see. The floats stood off to the side, deserted but not forgotten. The Seniors finally captured the desired first place with their Mustang reared in triumph at the top of the Mountain—Mt. Zion. Sophomores, Freshmen, and Juniors received 3rd, 2nd, and 4th places respectively. 10 Joanne Harkins Betty Bement Hofbauer Ann Rinkenberger In the center of the Homecoming program, were our Homecoming Queen, Betty Bement Hofbauer, and her court, Joanne Harkins, Ann Rinkenberger, and Leslie Robertson, lending their pep and personality. Later, radiating beauty and charm, they attended the Homecoming dance “Carnival.” Leslie Robertson 11 Homecoming Snaps 12 Defense Attorney Stevens claimed Karen Andre was innocent, while District Attorney Flint used every means in his power to convict her. “The Night of January 16th’’ was presented on November 15th and 16th, by the Junior Junior Play Class. The cast included: Marvin Archer, Mike Dorsey, Wayne Fan-cher, Delon Fox, Bob Frump, Dick Harrell, Wayne Johnson, Nick Lewis, Lucreta Miller, Larry Niccum, Alexa Noble, Denny Eichelberger, Judi Rine, Diane Perry, Jerry Rodeen, Carol Rohlfing, Sheila Roisland, Luwana Tarlton, Donna Sharp, Leah Yancey, and the audience. 13 Christmas When the curtain had closed on the Christmas Program, the students were faced with eight schoolless days, interrupted only by a dance that evening. The fact that they wouldn’t be in class for over a week didn't seem to bother them as they rushed home. The previous week had been filled with events: that last test in every class before vacation,- decorating Christmas trees; the A.F.S. tree and contest; and planning the Christmas program skits. Ending the year was the Christmas Program on Thursday afternoon. It included a song by the French students; a choral reading by the Speech classes; and the faculty skit featuring “cool'’ Mr. Shields as “Frosty, the Snowman.” Merry Christmas 14 Home Ec - Faculty Open House Coach’s Christmas Juniors’ Xmas Dance French Classes sang “Cantique de Noel” Speech Contest At the District Speech Contest held at Oakwood February 15, 1964, our participants were: Pat DeMuth-first in Extemporaneous Speaking; Charlene Fox - Verse Reading; Linda Hoover-third in Serious Reading; Tim Moore-second in Radio Speaking; Kathy Rinkenberger-Prose Reading; and Rick Shields-Original Oration. Tim Moore received a third at the Sectional Contest. Steve Dilks, Kathy Dunnan, Jane Lundy, and Tim Moore presented a play, Impromptu, by Pat Mosel. They placed fifth at District Speech Contest. Sandra Roughton and Marla Yancey participated as soloists in the Girl’s High Voice division, Darlene Redman and Linda Miller in Girl’s Medium Voice and Judi Rine and Ruth Busboom in Girl’s Low Voice. Boy’s Low Voice participants were Dave Swengel and Tim Moore, with Robert Thompson and John Wisher as Boy’s Medium Voice. 16 Seated, left to right: Jane Judkins, Sheila Stewart, Donna Carlson Standing: Mike Smith, Bill Smith, Gary Koester, Dennis Lyons, Frank Drendel, Frank Whitman, Marty Riemenschneider, Charles Morin, Julie Dyer Senior Class Play A political satire of the 30’s, “Girls in 509,” which takes place in an old-fashioned New York hotel, was presented by the Senior Class. A pair of hermit Republican ladies have isolated themselves, until a Republican is again elected. Members of the cast: Donna Carlson, Sheila Stewart, Frank Whitman, Denny Lyons, Charles Morin, Terri Ostendorf, Mike Smith, Jane Judkins, Frank Drendel, Gary Koester, Marty Riemenschneider, and Bill Smith, Director Carl Barth. 17 A. F. S. Student Richard Furrer Richard Furrer, this year’s A.F.S. student, came to us from Winterthur, Switzerland, in August and before he left us a year later he had made a lasting impression on everyone at Paxton High. We will all remember his pleasant personality, his intellect, his ability to communicate with us—Richard was an able ambassador of his country. In his senior year, Richard took English IV, Speech I, trigonometry, chemistry, and American history. When he returns home, he plans to attend the university at Zurich, Switzerland. From everyone at Paxton High—good luck, Richard! 18 Seated, left to right: Kathy Swanson, Valerie Mattingly Standing: Jerry Rodeen, Steve Pacey American Field Seruice Project This year as in the past, the Student Council has planned and carried out several projects for the American Field Service Fund. On Saturday, May 4, 1963, council members gave snappy service at the A.F.S. Dinner in Clara Peterson School. During the week before Christmas, members of the four classes donated money to the fund through the A.F.S. Christmas Tree. A new committee has been appointed in the Student Council to advise A.F.S. students and to suggest activities. The work of the council coupled with that of the community enables us to say “Welcome!” to students from other nations. 19 Richard Furrer with Jim Swanson Track Snaps ’ Boy Friend’ All High School Musical -March 29, 30, 1963 21 22 23 Spring Concert The Music Department held its annual Spring Concert on May 30, 1963, for the benefit of parents and interested members of the community. Mr. Robert Hills directed the Girls’ Chorus and A Cap-pella Choir, and Mr. Harry Swenson conducted the Concert Band. Student manager Charles “Bernstein” Morin directed the band in “March of the Majorettes.” The combined chorus and band in “A Tribute to Romberg” was a feature of the evening. Following the performance, when members of the audience left the auditorium whistling the tune “Down by the Riverside,” we knew the evening was a success. The day to which Freshmen look forward and Seniors dread is Class Day. For the Freshmen it means moving from the lowly role in “Freshie - green” to Sophomore status. For the Seniors it is the beginning of the last mile that ends with graduation. It’s both a sad and a happy time—and it's the day that the Reflector comes out. To the Seniors—Good Luck, we salute you! Class Day and Graduation 25 Honor Snaps Stanley Johnson—Winner of a General Motors Corporation Scholarship. Organizations supply an opportunity to develop individual interests. By encouraging people to advance their special abilities and cultivate new ones, these activities supplement classes and help to create a well-rounded school program. Organizations help to further a student’s full potential. 28 National Honor Society The members of the National Honor Society stress high character, leadership, honor and scholarship. The purpose of this organization is to promote wider knowledge through lectures and the preparation of papers. By sponsoring refreshment stands at basketball games, the National Honor Society has raised money for a $50 scholarship which is awarded annually to a deserving senior. Last year’s probationary members were inducted into the Society as active members during a special assembly on January 31. At this assembly, scholastic certificates were presented to those students who have achieved honor roll status but are not members of National Honor Society. Their chairman, Mr. Vickers, led the Board in taking an active role in school affairs. The six-member board proposed changes in the Student Council Constitution, and the abandonment of the outdated Freshman Initiation Week. Continuing duties assumed in previous years, they sponsored a Leadership Training School and supervised school elections. We hope that in future years the Student-Faculty Board will continue to be more interested in all phases of school life. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS First row, left to right: Mr. Kingston, Advisor; Kathy Hustedt, Secretary Second row: Ken Rohlfing, Treasurer; Stan Marshall, Vice-President Third row: Chip Pacey, President STUDENT COUNCIL Since 1925, the Student Council has been an integral part of the activities of our school. This group is responsible for student activities and services including Freshman Orientation, Homecoming, A.F.S. projects, Student “Take-Over” Day, class elections, assembly programs, morning intercom exercises, dances, refreshment stands, and vending machines. With capable President Chip Pacey and advisor Mr. Kingston, the council followed an extremely busy schedule this year. In addition to planning activities, members discussed the advantages and disadvantages of Freshman Initiation and considered revisions in the Council constitution. Members of the Student Council have a difficult role, for they must develop the council into more than an organization. Each year the council must become a governing body for activities, sometimes choosing between what students want and what is best for the school. 33 Music Department The outstanding student in music for 1962-1963 was Marty Riemenschneider. Silver pin awards went to Charles Morin, Carolyn Lindgren, Marty Riemenschneider, Steve Kelley, Alexa Noble, Ann Peterson, Barbara Reep, JoAnne Bowen, and Donna Sharp. Those receiving gold pin awards were Steve Dilks, Janis Carlson, Kathy Reitz, Kathy Dunnan, Carol Johnson, Pat Harrington, and Mike Stark. In the spring of 1964, the music department presented the musical comedy, “Get Up and Go.” The members of the choruses and Stage Band worked weeks in advance to prepare this play. 34 OFFICERS First row, left to right: Barbara Reep, Leslie Robertson, Kathy Dun-nan, Gary Chapman, Penny Johnston Second row: Jane Lundy, Beverly Hustedt, Sue Meu-ser, Carol Johnson, Steve Dilks, Ken Rohlfing BAND ENSEMBLES Mixed Woodwind Duet: Carol Johnson, Larry Turner; Wind Sonata: Barb Swenson, Pat Harrington; Flute Trio: Janet Guthrie, Mary Griggs, Mary Krukowski; Clarinet Trio: Melissa Dunnan, Linda Abrahamson, Sharon Dennison; Flute-Clarinet Quartet: Alexa Noble, Carolyn Lindgren, Barbara Reep, Pat Harrington; Woodwind Quintet: Marlena Goodwin, Barb Swenson, Jim Swanson, Sherri Sid-dens, Marla Yancey; Sax Duet: Julia Branson, Linda Adkins; Sax Quartet: Jo Anne Bowen, Julie Apland, Donna Sharp, Pat Sigler; Mixed Brass 1: Kathy Dunnan, Gary Chapman; Mixed Brass 2: Mike Stark, Dean Dillon; Drum Quintet: Steve Dilks, Rick Volden, Jim Robertson, Ken Rohlfing, John Bankson; Percussion: Steve Dilks, Rick Volden, Pam Bittle CHORUS ENSEMBLES Madrigals: Jane Lundy, Penny Johnston, Barbara Swenson, Judi Rine, Ruth Bus-boom, Kathy Dunnan, Steve Dilks, Steve Johnson, Ken Rohlfing, Dave Swengel, Tim Moore, Charles Newman; Mixed Octet: Alexa Noble, Gerrie Storm, Linda Miller, Kathy Swanson, Ken Rohlfing, James Swanson, Bill Hansen, Bob Thompson; Girl’s Trio 1: Sharon Dennison, Linda Abrahamson, Cheryl Marshall; Girl’s Trio 2: Pat Harrington, Carolyn Lindgren, Melissa Dunnan, Mixed Quartet: Penny Johnston, Bev Hustedt, Alan Storm, John Wisher; Girl’s Sextet: Gerrie Storm, Cheryl Maphis, Carol Rohlfing, Carol Nelson, Mary Griggs, Julie Steinfeldt; Girl’s Triple Trio: Marla Yancey, Sherri Siddens, Val Mattingly, Sandy Moulding, Barbara Swenson, Darlene Redman, Bonnie Hustedt, Linda Adkins, Nancy Hilliard 35 A Capella Choir r r- t) r- First row, left to right: Marlena Goodwin, Penny Johnston, Leslie Robertson, Eileen Jamison, Sherri Sid-dens, Carol Glazik, Kathy Barr, Sharon Dennison, JudyTreach, Nancy Hilliard, Linda Miller, Valerie Mattingly, Gerrie Storm, Bonnie Voorhees, Kathy Swanson, Connie Carlson, Eileen Glazik, Kathy Walker, Darlene Redman, Cheryl Ma-phis Second row: Mr. Fluegel, Director; Barb Jones, Linda Adkins, Melissa Dunnan, Janet Guthrie, Carolyn Lindgren, Patty Harrington, Diana Lower, Patsy Mattingly, Jacque Smith, Jill Wilson, Kathy Rinkenberger, Mary Ann Wesslund, Patty Krueger, Priscilla Bradley, Ann Rinkenberger, Donna Meuser, Joanne Harkins, Kathy Hustedt, Charlene Fox Third row: Marla Yancey, Barbara Swenson, Ron Carleton, Steve Pacey, Alan Storm, Dave Sims, John Swengel, Bonnie Hustedt, Nancy Hoover, Sandy Moulding, Gail Moulding, Darios Eis-kamp, Pam Bradley, Judy Reppert, Carol Nelson, Maryalyce Moynihan, Judi Rine, Ruth Busboom, Lucreta Miller Fourth row: Linda Abrahamson, Jane Lundy, Kathy Dunnan, Allen Johnson, Steve Johnson, George Carpenter, Dan Coplea, Bill Rasmus, Diane Perry, Carol Rohlfing, Sheila Roisland, Peggy Hill, Darla Darr, Lynn Burklund, Joan Hardman, Brenda Meredith, Sherri Herriott, Julie Steinfeldt, Beverly Hustedt, Sue Meuser, Alexa Noble Fifth row: Jim Rasmussen, Dave Swengel, John Wisher, Russell Brown, Ken Rohlfing, Jim Swanson, Rick Volden, Rick Nimon, Mark Thompson, Greg Weller, Carl Peterson, Carl Palmberg, Rick Shields, Steve Kelly, Charles Newman, Mike Marron, Jerry Foster, Bob Thompson, Stan Benz, Dick Harrell, Bill Hansen 36 The A Capella Chorus, consisting of a total of 101 members, showed the success and popularity of singing in a group of blended masculine and feminine voices. Under the direction of Mr. Fluegel and Mrs. Peters, the student teacher, they were quite active in the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, the Ford County Music Festival; and many landed parts in the musical production of “Get Up and Go.’’ In addition, they sent representatives to the I.M.E.A. District and State Festival. Their activities added much fun and excitement to our school calendar this year. 37 Girls’ Chorus First row, left to right: Joan Lackey, Diane Williams, Kathy Rinkenberger, Pat DeMuth, Doris Nelson, Jill Wilson, Meriann Harweger, Judy Robertson, Leslie Robertson, Joanne Harkins, Connie Carlson, Donna Barringer, Betty Lewis, Virginia Wiley, Cheryl Maphis, Judy Fancher, Darlene Redman, Colleen McCabe, Judy Treach, Roberta Krueger Second row: Judy Reppert, Penny Johnston, Ann Rinkenberger, Betty Tucker, Jacque Smith, Pat Krueger, Mary Ann Wesslund. Later in the year, they had the privilege of working with Mrs. Peters, who was here as a student teacher. The energy of the girls and their directors paid off in their participation in the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, and the Music Contest. In the Ford County Vocal Festival, they joined other local choruses in presenting a most enjoyable concert. 39 Boy’s Chorus This year the Music Department had a number of boys who were interested in organizing a Boys’ Chorus. It operated for a semester, but due to schedule conflicts, a rehearsal time was not found that enabled the group to function properly. It is the hope of the Music Department that in future years this organization will be given rehearsal time equal to that of the other musical groups. Each Monday and Wednesday, fifteen knowledge-thirsty Freshmen met to learn the fundamentals of singing and reading music. Their diligent studies prepared them for eventual participation in the music department, where, we’re sure, their efforts have been, and shall be, much appreciated. After the fall season, the band commenced working on music for the Christmas Concert and for a concert at the Rantoul U.S.O. A 42 new experience for the band this year was marching in the Paxton Santa Claus Parade. The cash prizes given for participation in this event were shared with Kempton-Cabery. At the Rantoul U.S.O. the sixteen members gave a short con- cert after which they provided music for dancing. For the departmental musical, “Get Up and Go,” the Stage Band furnished the accompaniment and background music. 44 Cheerleaders “P-A-X-T-O-N”: thus begins one of the familiar, peppy cheers of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Jumping high into the air, their enthusiasm raises school spirit and support for Paxton’s Athletic teams. To learn new methods and styles of cheering they attended the Cheerleading Clinic at Normal University. Meanwhile, back on the playing field: “Paxton! Paxton! Paxton!” HEAD CHEERLEADER Carol Johnson Left to right: Linda Miller, Patsy Mat- tingly, Connie Carlson, Melissa Dunnan, Connie Burklund, Carol Johnson, Betty Hofbauer 45 Pep Club The revised Pep Club Constitution vividly points out the purposes of the club, encouraging school spirit, backing our teams, and practicing good sportsmanship. Again this year the Pep Club, fifty-five members strong, took first place in the Club-Float division of the Homecoming Parade. Mrs. Benear and Mr. Fluegel willingly helped the group perfect their marching routines. Barb Jones, Judy Robertson, Sandy Moulding, Pat Hummel, Kathy Barr, and Val Mattingly were elected the 1963-1964 Freshman Cheerleaders. Their pep and enthusiasm encouraged the Freshman and Sophomore teams. The Varsity Cheerleaders, with the Pep Club, presented several new yells to encourage the spirits of the Varsity teams. The Letter-man’s Club is made up of athletes who have won letters in football, basketball, or track. They receive their letters for the meeting of special requirements set up for each sport. The club has adopted for a project the raising of funds to erect an events board at the new high school. At the beginning of school the members hired themselves out to do yard work and odd jobs. During the football season the club members sold booster tags, Homecoming, mums and victory cake in the lunch room. During the basketball season they sold “Mustang” hats. Funds from all of these activities went into their project. 49 Lettermen’s Actiuity Board A worthwhile project which will take several years to complete has been undertaken by the Paxton Lettermen’s Club. The club is raising funds for the erection of a lighted activity board at the new high school. It will announce athletic contests, concerts and other high school activities to the Paxton Community and students. The board will be about twelve feet long and nine feet high. Plans are for it to be seen from a long distance. This project will involve considerable effort on the part of the Lettermen’s Club, and the result will be a real asset to our new and modern Paxton High School. 50 Library Club Seated, left to right: Mary Griggs, Mary Ann Hilt, Ruth Ann LaFaray, Mardella Andrews Standing: Ramona Andrews, Connie Walker, Rick Shields, Mr. Griggs, Advisor; Anna Marie Caspers, Donna Myers One phase of a student’s class-day is looking for the right book in the library. The Library Club is organized to assist the student, help Mr. Griggs with his many duties, and at the same time give its members practical experience in library procedures. The highlight of the 1963-64 school year for the club was an Author’s Tea featuring Mrs. Grace Harmon McGary, a noted world traveller. Her novel, Gone the Morning Calm, has been a favorite here since that time. At midyear Denny Reitz and Linda Holland joined the club, boosting the membership to eleven. 51 Debate Society Discarding all forms of organized debate, Mr. Jones and Mr. Dallagicomo led the liberals against the political conservatives with Mr. Fluegel in the first “knock-down, drag-out argument of the Debate Society. With few meetings during the year, little debating was done; however, when this group did meet, they enjoyed themselves and exchanged ideas. At Christmas the Latin Club members made covers for some booklets which were sent to the hospital. At the morning assembly February 28th, the Latin Club presented “Quo Vadis” in color. Finally, the year was topped off with the Roman Banquet, which was preceded by Latin Week. The participants of the banquet were robed in old Roman apparel and were waited on hand and foot by their slaves, who, as freshmen, are at the bottom of the social scale. Awards are given at the end of the year to the top ten girls receiving the most points throughout the year. The club holds regular meetings each Tuesday during the homeroom period, an extra meeting one evening of every month. 58 The F.H.A. belongs to the Illinois Future Homemakers of America and also the National Future Homemakers of America. The year was overflowing with numerous activities: Christmas caroling with the F.F.A., a style show with the Jr. Womens Club, the Formal Initiation on February 4, and those beautiful hats sold by the Lettermen’s Club were sewn by our one and only F.H.A. There was also a Mother and Daughter Banquet and an Open House to which the teachers were invited for lunch. The highest recognition for the chapter was the winning of the National F.F.A. Gold Emblem for overall activities. Only 63 of these honors were given to F.F.A.’s throughout the nation. The F.F.A. had a most successful year, as the following award-winners reveal. Mervin Peters won District and State awards for soybeans as well as the DeKalb Award, while Dana Sauer, the section winner in safety, won a trip to Chicago. Dan Berg received awards in farm mechanics and Parliamentary procedure. The top winner in dairy this year was Dennis Dippel. Thespians is designed to help an individual enter a make-believe world in which he shares, vicariously, the experiences of make believe people. If not immediately involved in the production of a play, Thespians are content to watch. However, they hope to observe with understanding the production of drama. Thespus, the ancient Greek founder of drama, saw that there is nothing more interesting than the observation of man in different situations. All types of athletics teach would-be athletes that nothing is achieved without work; to be the best he must work the hardest. Being able to represent his school in competition is an honor sports can give to the athlete who is willing to work. 72 73 Athletic Scores VARSITY FOOTBALL 1963 Triangular Paxton—1 07 ' 2 OPPONENT PAXTON Cissna Park—26 Rankin—1 4 Villa Grove 13 13 Triangular Bloomington—78 Schlarman 1 0 n Rantoul—43 Paxton—1 6 Oakwood 1 z 20 u 0 Triangular Oakwood—73 V2 Mt. In addition to the usual preseason goals of getting in shape and practicing as a unit, the team had to learn new plays and become proficient at scoring from the new formation. The season results were an improvement over last year, and Paxton’s last game victory over Gibson City points to a better season in ’64. Varsity Basketball Coached by Mr. Smith, the Paxton Mustangs posted a 6-15 record in Varsity Basketball this year. One of the highlights of the season was a 69-62 victory over Paxton’s arch rival, Gibson City. To keep their fans on their toes the Mustangs produced several “nerve-wrenching” one or two Swengel, Dan Curtis, Bill Hansen, Jerry ne Johnson, Tim Schofield, Don Jones, point decision games. The squad of twelve players looks back on a season of hard-fought games. The highly polished basketball court is empty now, but the gym still echoes the enthusiasm of the fans. Perhaps next year Paxton may be another Cobden . . . who knows? 78 First row, left to right: Frank Whitman, Don Jones, Jim Smith, Bill Smith, Mike Griffin, Paul Hanson Second row: Stan Johnson, Jerry Ulrich, Joe Aired, Charles Morin, Dan Beppler, Dan Curtis, Glenn Currie Third row: Chip Pacey, Jim Sims, Gary Brethorst, Bill Paris, Larry Kinney, Jon Whitcomb Varsity Track Springtime . . . and a coach’s fancy turns to thoughts of a muddy track with no bottom, long hours of hard exercise and sore mus-cules, ... his goal, more muscular bodies . . . and perhaps that elusive thing . . . glory. In the Spring of '63, coached by Mr. Zuchowski, Paxton’s Track Team finished with a respectable record in their meets, and four new school records as well. They placed first in two triangular encounters with Cissna Park and Rankin. They finished second in a Triangular Meet with Oakwood and Hoopeston; and in the County Meet. 79 Sophomore Football For the Sophomore Football Team the only win of the season was over Octavia, 6 to 0. Then after five losses, they played Hoopeston to a tie. A disappointing loss to Gibson City completed the Sophomore Football Season of 1963. The squad, lead by Coach Larry Lyons who was assisted by Gary Popel, showed im- provement as the season progressed. They never lost their determination or their enthusiasm for the game. Although the Sophomore team posted a disappointing seasonal record, they showed the stamina and talent that will make them an important addition to the 1964 Varsity Team. Although they didn’t go far in the tournament because of an unfortunate beginning, nevertheless they show much promise for next year’s varsity team. First row, left to right: Chris Kimberly, Greg Weller, Randy Frump, Stan Benz, Bob Caisse, Elmer Kief Second row: Ron Thompson, Manager; Jim Golden, Gene Kelly, Mike Marron, George Carpenter, Fred Carlson, Steve Pacey 81 First row, left to right: Bob Frump, Doug Houston, Stan Marshall, Denny Eichelberger, Tim Schofield, Darrel Seim, Nick Lewis, John Drinkwalter, Jerry Rodeen, Steve Pacey Second row: George Carpenter, Greg Weller, John Bankson, Charles Newman, Ron Thompson, Wayne Johnson, Marvin Archer, Mike Kingston, Dick Harrell, Ron Stapp, Bob Tucker, Tim Canavan Third row: Fred Carlson, Dean Dillon, Randy Frump, Carl Peterson, Bernard Hartt, Stan Benz, Denny Short, Mike Maxey, Bill Hansen, Bill Hubler, Earl Albers, Larry St. Louis, Dave Swengel, Delon Fox, Jerry Vaught, Max Martin, Mike Marron Sophomore Track This year there was a division between the Freshman and Sophomore teams. In previous years the two teams were combined into the Freshman-Sophomore Team. Some of you may wonder just what type of practice our boys have gone through. Here is an example of a day at practice: When the team was not in competition the runners ran during the whole practice session in order to keep in shape. At the same time the weight men ran the mile and went to their individual groups to practice throwing the discus and putting the shot. During the last 40 minutes the boys all ran in relays. The only recorded Sophomore meet was against Rantoul when the score was Rantoul 77, Paxton 41. 82 First row, left to right: Rick Nimon, Rodger Abrahamson, Steve Benz, Kent Palma, Bob Peterson, Darrel Abrahamson, Phil Pool, Randy Maxey, Jim Foster, John Reep Second row: Gary Voorhees, Alan Storm, Lonnie Bauer, Bill Nuss, John Swengel, Lane Belson, Jerry Foster, Dan Coplea, Ron Vaughn, Mark Thompson Third row: John Joyce, Rodger Lubben, Jerry Frump, Bill Ingold, Bill Snyder, Kevin Marshall, Larry Benson, Dave Sims, Bill Rasmus Freshman Football 29 potential All-Americans turned out for the Freshman Squad this year. Under Coach Sam Wright they learned a lot of the fundamentals, while racking up a 5 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss record. Coach Wright was satisfied with their overall progress, and proud of their spirit. We predict that there are a lot of future candidates for the Lettermen’s Club in this group. 83 First row, left to right: Max Martin, Manager; Jim Robertson, Randy Maxey, Kent Palma, Steve Benz, Gary Voorhees, Bob Peterson Second row: Rodger Lubben, Alan Storm, John Reep, Dan Coplea, Dave Sims, Bill Rasmus, Bill Nuss Freshman Basketball This year the Freshman basketball team, coached by Mr. Zimmerman, accumulated a record of four wins and eight losses. The team consisted of thirteen boys, and they all worked very hard in practice to improve themselves for future Paxton teams. During the season the team beat Gibson City twice, Watseka, Rob-erts-Thawville, and Cissna Park. The games which they lost were for the most part regular “barnburners”, which were decided by only a few points. 84 Freshman Track In their first year as a separate team our Freshmen hope to accomplish a great deal. In 1964 the former Fresh-Soph team was divided into the Sophomore and Freshmen teams, both of which will be trying this spring to make a good showing. First row, left to right: John Swengel, David Sims, Tom Brown, Bill Nuss, Mike Hertenstein Second row: Rodger Lubben, John Joyce, Mark Thompson, Randy Maxey, Kevin Marshall, Steve Wisher Third row: Ronnie Vaughn, Gary Voorhees, Larry Benson, Kent Palma, Dan Coplea, Bob Peterson, Bill Rasmus 85 Left to right: Jim Robinson, Steve Dilks, Tim Schofield, Delon Fox, Mike Dorsey Golf Team “Fore!” . . . with this call and a few pointers, Mr. Condit began coaching Paxton’s golf team, in its first season, during the spring of 1963. The team of five practiced on the greens and in the sand traps of Lakeview Country Club. Matches with Gibson City and Rantoul were played during the practice season. Future teams will play in tournaments with neighboring schools, and it is hoped that a golf tournament can be organized within the Wauseca League. Within a short time, golf has taken a permanent place among the other sports of Paxton High. 86 Record Holders FOOTBALL r Three outstanding players on the varsity football team were Larry Kinney, Tim Schofield, and Darrel Seim, pictured above from top to bottom. Their hard work and playing skill got them positions on the All-Conference Team for the 1963 Football Season. TRACK The 1963 Track Season produced four Record Holders, who are pictured above from top to bottom. They are: Don Jones, who made the 880 yard run in 2:04.7; Frank Whitman, who ran the 120 yard high hurdles in 15.3; and Chip Pacey, who finished the 1 mile run in 4:47.7. 87 The most important parts of a “real live high school” are the students, the teachers, and the school personnel. Nothing happens without them. They plan, work at, and attend all school events. Teachers present knowledge; students try to learn it; and the school personnel keeps the building up and performs other necessary functions. Without people all classes, sports, and activities just wouldn’t be. 88 89 OFFICERS Seated, left to right: Pat Tucker, Secretary; Gary Chapman, President; Robin Elkin, Vice-President; Mark Wagner, Treasurer Standing: Pat Sigler, Girl Representa- tive; Steve Dilks, Boy Representative Seniors and Class Honors The Class of 1964 spent four busy years in Paxton High. With Homecoming float themes of “Can the Cornjerkers,” “Bye Bye Birdie,’’ and “Conquer Mt. Zion,” they won first place during their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. They sponsored five school parties: “Spring Carnival,” Freshman all-school party; “Twilight Zone,” Sophomore Class Day Dance; “O Tannenbaum,” Junior Christmas Dance; “Spring Sonata,” Junior-Senior Prom; and an all-school party their Senior year. The Junior production of Our Town was followed by an equally interesting Senior drama, Anastasia. After planning, working, and arguing together, many graduating Seniors will shed a sentimental tear for “dear old Paxton High” and the fun they have had there. 90 National Honor Society Basketball Awards Russell Anderson Allan Bleich Gary Chapman Glenn Currie Steve Dilks Kathleen Dunnan Robin Elkin Richard Furrer Carol Johnson Don Jones Ruth Ann Lafary Jane Lundy Tim Moore Chip Pacey Ann Rinkenberger Carol Tachick Pat Tucker Pat Sigler Honorary Captain—Jerry Ulrich Most Sportsmanlike—Jerry Ulrich Most Valuable Player—Jerry Ulrich Best Defense—Don Jones Free Throw Award—Jerry Ulrich Football Awards Best Blocker—Bill Paris Best Tackier—Larry Kinney Most Improved Player—Bob Siebert Most Valuable Player—Larry Kinney Bill Paris American Legion Track Awards Don Jones—Outstanding Junior Larry Kinney—Silver Track Shoe Cheerleaders Class Day Awards Connie Carlson Carol Johnson Lettermen Social Studies Award—Robin Elkin Citizenship Award—Gary Chapman French Award—Tim Moore Allan Barnes Dan Beppler Glenn Currie Mike Griffin Don Jones Larry Kinney Chip Pacey Bill Paris Jim Rasmussen Ken Rohlfing Bob Siebert Charles Steele Bob Thompson Larry Turner Jerry Ulrich Dan Curtis Jim Sims Music Contest Winners First Place Gerrie Storm Leslie Robertson Steve Dilks Carol Nelson Cheryl Maphis Jane Lundy Penny Johnston Pat Sigler Kathy Dunnan Ken Rohlfing Tim Moore Bob Thompson John Wisher F.F.A. Next in line was the Junior Class Play, “The Night of January 16th“. This unusual court drama had members of the audience participating in the jury. Another highlight was the Christmas Dance, “ . . . Spring of 1963 saw the ground-breaking and beginning of construction of the new high school. Since then, decisions on science and language laboratories, television, athletic, and cafeteria equipment have consumed much time. The Board has also begun studies of a future curriculum. In addition to these extra duties, the Board is responsible for budgets, salaries, approval of new teachers, and all things necessary for the smooth operation of the Paxton school system. “With the excellent help of administrators, teachers, and students, the long hours of meetings and work become very rewarding to those who serve on the Board.” (Dr. W.
