christmas Law and order was brought to the teen-age faculty classroom by its teacher. Miss Kroon. She tried to prevent further chaos by entertaining the students. “Ruthie” Nafziger and “Big Daddy” Popel attempted a jazzy piano duet. Carl and Bobby blew their horns. Mrs. Hutchins and “Caesar” Veatch, led by Mrs. Rodeen, screeched out a song (??). “Bessie” Ragland was studying the fundamentals of her yo-yo. “Chuckie” Vickers kept the students jumping with his straight pin and balloons. “Leo” Lyons had to leave the room in a mad dash. In the midst of all this confusion sat a new student, “Tommy” Shields, who obviously didn’t like school—he cried! 15

music contest The state solo and ensemble contest was held in Plainfield, Illinois, on March 16, 1963. Approximately seventy-five students from Paxton High participated in various events scheduled through the day. The following solos and ensembles received superior ratings: Brass Duet (Kathy Dunnan and Kathy Reitz); Cornet Trio (Mike Stark, Stan Caspers, Steve Kelley); Trombone Trio (Marty Riemenschneider, Dean Dillon, Mike Anderson); Girl’s Medium Voice Solo, Kathy Kiest; and Boy’s Low Voice Solo, Marty Riemenschneider. On April 20 the Concert Band, A Cappella Choir, and Girls’ Chorus attended the Illinois High School Association state contest for bands and choruses. This competition was also held at Plainfield. 16
