Striving for higher goals, seeking perfection, the editing and publishing of a yearbook — these are just a few of the things you have taught us. In honor of your years of service to Paxton High School and as sponsor of the REFLECTOR, we would like to dedicate to you this, our 1963 yearbook. 4 The reflector staff highlight initiation Freshman week, a memorable and enjoyable week for all involved, including the “green little” freshmen, got off to a rip-roaring start. This eventful week ended with a colossal program of entertainment provided by these newcomers. The program varied from “twisting” to proposing. Although the freshmen were given a bad time they were eventually welcomed by the upperclassmen. We know they will contribute much to Paxton High and to its future. 8 homecoming Homecoming 1962 was, as usual, a hectic but enjoyable week. Careful plans were made and carried out by the Student Council with the help of the athletic department, the cheerleaders, the Pep Club, and the Band. The first major event was the announcement of the 1962 Homecoming Queen, Dionne Moline, and her court—Jean Asher, Donna Carlson, and Janie Judkins—at the Thursday, October 4, pep meeting. That evening the parade wound through the streets of Paxton and the float prizes were awarded—first place class float was awarded to the Junior Class “Bye, Bye, Birdie!” while organizational prize went to the Pep Club marching group’s unusual routine. The following night was the game. Enjoyable halftime shows were presented by the Marching Band and the Pep Club. Although the spirits were high and the boys played hard, Paxton was defeated by Rantoul. On Saturday night the Homecoming Dance was held and the outcome of the game was forgotten. The high school gym was decorated with purple and white in a Mardi Gras festival theme. Thus, Homecoming ended for another year. Miss Kroon. She tried to prevent further chaos by entertaining the students. “Ruthie” Nafziger and “Big Daddy” Popel attempted a jazzy piano duet. Carl and Bobby blew their horns. Mrs. Hutchins and “Caesar” Veatch, led by Mrs. Rodeen, screeched out a song (??). “Bessie” Ragland was studying the fundamentals of her yo-yo. “Chuckie” Vickers kept the students jumping with his straight pin and balloons. “Leo” Lyons had to leave the room in a mad dash. In the midst of all this confusion sat a new student, “Tommy” Shields, who obviously didn’t like school—he cried! 15 music contest The state solo and ensemble contest was held in Plainfield, Illinois, on March 16, 1963. Approximately seventy-five students from Paxton High participated in various events scheduled through the day. The following solos and ensembles received superior ratings: Brass Duet (Kathy Dunnan and Kathy Reitz); Cornet Trio (Mike Stark, Stan Caspers, Steve Kelley); Trombone Trio (Marty Riemenschneider, Dean Dillon, Mike Anderson); Girl’s Medium Voice Solo, Kathy Kiest; and Boy’s Low Voice Solo, Marty Riemenschneider. On April 20 the Concert Band, A Cappella Choir, and Girls’ Chorus attended the Illinois High School Association state contest for bands and choruses. This competition was also held at Plainfield. 16 speech contest The District Speech Contest was held on February 16, 1963, at Champaign High School. The following people participated in the competition: Julie Dyer—Oratorical Declamation; Donna Sharp—Prose Reading; Rick Shields—Radio Speaking; Judy Larson—Verse Reading; Mary Phillips—After-dinner Speaking; Sheila Stewart—Comedy Reading; Terri Ostendorf—Serious Reading; and Tim Moore—Extemporaneous Speaking. Julie placed third in her division and Tim received a second place rating, which enabled them to go on to the sectional contest on March 2 at Normal. Aria da Capo, a play written by Edna St. Vincent Millay, was also presented at contest and received fourth place. The members of the cast were Jerry Rodeen, Luwana Tarlton, Bob Frump, Steve Pacey, and Dave Swengel. 17 senior play The Class of 1962 presented THE NIGHT IS MY ENEMY, by Fred Carmichael, on April 13, 1962. The money raised at the dinner was used to finance the American Field Service program. After the dinner, a spring concert was presented by the Music Department. An all-school party ended the evening, with music provided by the Stage Band. 19 prom A Touch of Dutch american field service SUCHJA Suchja Sastraadiwinata, our foreign exchange student, has been a welcome member of our student body this past year. He came to us from Tasikmolaja, West Java, Indonesia, and lived with the William Johnston family while attending school here. He was, indeed, an industrious fellow, for, in addition to his attempt to master our language, he took algebra II, American History, English, biology, and chemistry. His extracurricular activities included membership in Student Council, Band, and Thespians. At home he had already finished his high school education and was planning on attending college to become a doctor. Suchja was able to point out many differences between his school and ours. In fact, Suchja and all his accounts of his home were especially interesting, since he did come from a country that is often in the news and which is almost on the opposite side of the world from us. It is certain that Paxton High School will long remember this little Indonesian. 22 exchange students Elly Kramer and Judy Larson On June 15 I left for Montreal as one of a delegation of 600 American Field Service exchange students who were on their way to Europe, Scandinavia, Africa, and the Near East. Aboard our ship, the SEVEN SEAS, I had language and orientation classes all morning and forums in the afternoon. During these meetings we discussed the current political situations in the United States and their effect on the rest of the Free World. All 600 of us landed in Rotterdam, Holland, after ten days at sea. Rotterdam, a city of nearly a million people, is the crossroads of Europe. It is the largest port in Europe and the center of the European Common Market. This was my home during my two and a half months’ stay in Holland. I lived with Christian Kramer family and their four children, one of whom, Elly, was my age. Our family went on a camping trip through parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, during which time we visited the cities of Brussels, Cologne, and Bonn. In this picture you see my Dutch sister, Elly. We are posing for our father, in the traditional dress of Holland. At the time we were visiting in a small fishing village, on the Zider Zee, called Markem. Of the most extraordinary things that I noticed in Holland, the never-ending contrasts between the old and the new that are to be found in the Netherlands, were particularly apparent to me. Super highways running beside canals that are centuries old; skyscrapers and sixteenth century churches standing side by side; the tremendous port of Rotterdam and the fishing villages of Markem and Volendam; all are typical of the change and contrast of the “old-world.” by Judy Larson 23 track . . . and the cow jumped over the moon. “FOLLOW THAT LADY” graduation 25 honor national honor society Until last year the National Honor Society was strictly an honor organization, with meetings being held only to elect officers, induct new members, and plan the annual banquet. This tradition was broken in 1962, when it was decided to raise money to sponsor a scholarship. Again this year the society set a scholarship as their goal, raising money at basketball games and at a bake sale in April. One regular business meeting was held on the second Friday of each month, and a special program was scheduled for the fourth Friday. Forty-two new members were inducted into the society at a special assembly on February 8. The annual banquet for the members, their parents, and the faculty was held in the spring. The climax of the year’s activities was the awarding of the National Honor Society scholarship on Class Day. The Student Council is the student governing body of Paxton High; its members are elected by the student body each spring. This year the Council placed special emphasis on Student Council activities at the District, State, and National levels. Terry Hustedt, as president of the Champaign District Student Councils, was a delegate to the national convention at San Jose, California. Three students were sent to the summer Student Council workshop at Charleston, Illinois. The Council also sent four delegates to the State Convention in Chicago. Homecoming, and the American Field Service Dinner which climaxed a year of money-making projects helped to support the International Exchange program in Paxton High. The Council initiated post-game sock hops that found immediate popularity among the Student Body. Here we celebrated our victories, and made our defeats seem less disastrous. Another new activity that the Council initiated was the formation of a Student Exchange program between high schools. Mary Phillips was selected as our “ambassador to Champaign,” while Sue Overman was sent to Paxton for a week. This program had a most successful start, and will be extended in future years. 30 student council officers Left to right: Chip Pacey, Treasurer; Judy Larson, Secretary; James Smith, Advisor; Donna Carlson, Vice-President; Marty Riemenschneider, President student faculty board Front row, left to right: Stan Marshall, Mary Phillips, Charles Morin Second row: Mr. Barth, Mr. Hills, Mr. James Smith concert choir The Concert Choir, reorganized this year, had forty members. This specially chosen group comprised the center of all the choral music activities, music contest ensembles, the Madrigal singers, and the musical “The Boyfriend.” The concert Choir, working as a whole, and as two independent groups, performed for many civic and school functions. They participated in the Christmas concert, and were cleverly attired in bathrobes and slippers for their informal selection, “Twas the Night before Christmas.” A group, chosen from this organization and under the direction of Mr. Hills, performed a skit entitled “Heat Wave” for the Stunt and Talent Show. This skit placed first in the stunt division and the money awarded for this prize helped in financing the Music Department. It was the genera! opinion of the members of the Concert Choir that they had developed a better knowledge of music and performance during their participation in this organization. This group, numbering twenty, chose Ann Peterson as its student director. Members of Stage Band gained valuable training in sight-reading music, particularly modern rhythms and notation, plus additional musical experience. Throughout the year Stage Band furnished music for the pep meetings and during the basketball season for many of the home games. It also sponsored the “Fall Frolic Dance” in November, performed at an assembly in February, and appeared wtih the Concert Band in the winter concert. It became part of the Publications Department three years ago, but split from this organization at the beginning of the 1963-1964 school year. It is now an independent organization. The Blue and Gold staff learned to write articles, meet deadlines, and set the articles up in dummy form. Many seasonal fetaure articles appeared throughout the year. With the assistance of the F.F.A. and the Reflector staff, the Blue and Gold sponsored a chicken barbeque in the early fall. The sale of sweatshirts by the Blue and Gold and Reflector staffs added to the funds of both organizations. In January, the Reflector and the Thespians aided the Blue and Gold staff in the production of the annual Stunt and Talent Show. 38 reflector In addition to the publication of the 1963 Reflector, the staff sponsored several outside events. The Reflector and the Blue and Gold supported their respective publications by the sale of bookcovers and sweatshirts. In the autumn a chicken barbeque was given by both organizations, in conjunction with the F.F.A. Again the Reflector and Blue and Gold worked together, this time with the Thespians, in the presentation of the annual Stunt and Talent Night. Next week, we’ve got to get organized! Through plays, assemblies, and speech contests the Thespians were active and gained experience in appearing publicly. The Thespian Society, founded in 1957, has had as its aim the improvement of the dramatic program of our school. Attending the Broadway musical “Carnival in Chicago exposed the members to the legitimate theater. Thespian Night this year took the form of the presentation of three one-act plays. In the spring the Thespians and the Music Department presented a musical comedy, “The Boy Friend.” One-act plays were given by many of the members during the year. Paxton High School organized their local F. H. A. Chapter in 1947 for training tomorrow’s homemakers and improving family life. The other goals of the club are to develop members’ interests and skills in home and family life; to develop an enthusiastic attitude toward the importance of community service; and to improve their ability to organize and manage time and money. The Paxton F. H. A.’s 36 members meet Tuesdays during home-room period. During the school year the members work for Junior, Chapter, State, and local awards which are presented at the end of the year. Another year of activity began with a Fall Rally for the officers. With the Christmas season came a caroling party and the baking of goods for the Ford County Nursing Home. The next important events were the formal initiation of new members and serving at the Young Farmer’s Award Dinner. The Spring Style Show, presented in conjunction with the Junior Women’s Club, was the highlight of the past year’s activities. 57 future farmers of america First row, left to right: Steve Rinkenberger, Parliamentarian; Dick Lindauer, Representative; Dan Berg, Secretary Second row: Don Rasmus, Treasurer; Kenneth Mennenga, Sentinel; Glenn Currie, Vice-President; Mervin Peters, President; Mr. Rohlfing, Advisor The FFA, chartered on September 30, 1929, had thirty members this year. The Latin Club, advised by Mrs. Veatch, took part in activities that profited the Latin department of the school. Members also participated in interesting activities, which time prevented their enjoying in Latin class. All Latin students observed Latin Week, which was climaxed with a Roman Banquet. Freshmen may join on a probationary basis until the end of the first semester. If new members fail to maintain their grade standings, they are dropped from the club. The Library Club meets Thursday during the homeroom period. Activities of the department included a Chicago trip to see the musical “Carnival”; the Christmas choral concert; a winter band concert; the solo, ensemble, and group contests; and the spring choral and instrumental concert. The concert band performed at four of the home football games, and the stage band played for all of the pep meetings and the home basketball games. The Christmas choral concert displayed the musical ability of the choruses while creating an inspiring atmosphere through the use of special lighting effects. At the winter band concert, the band proved its versatility by playing a wide variety of songs, some of which featured soloists. The stage band also performed at this concert. In addition to their many school activities, A Cappella and Concert choir both entertained at numerous community functions. “The Boyfriend,” a musical satire of the “roaring twenties,” was presented on March 29 and 30. The show was a collaboration of the Music Department and the Thespians, under the direction of Mr. Barth and Mr. Hills. The highest departmental award, given to the student who displayed outstanding qualities in both vocal and instrumental music, was presented to Sally Rolle in the year 1961-62. She also received the Outstanding Senior in Music award given by PHS. Students who had actively participated in band or chorus earned individual gold and silver awards. However, due to schedule conflicts, rehearsal time was so limited that the glee club could not function properly. The boys were placed in numerous ensembles which participated in contests, concerts, and many school and community functions. It is the hope of the Music Department that in future years this organization will be given rehearsal time equal to other musical groups. 78 freshman The Freshman Chorus, which met during the ninth period on Monday and Wednesday, was composed of twenty-seven members. No officers were elected in this organization, nor were there any special awards presented to the members. This year the chorus, under the direction of Mr. Hills, was divided into ensembles. It was generally felt that by dividing the main organization into smaller groups voice training was more easily achieved. The gym was decorated in red and silver to carry out the “Moulin Rouge” theme of the dance. Highlighting their junior year was the prom. A huge windmill, a dike filled with water, and hundreds of colorful tulips created a Dutch atmosphere. During their senior year the class broke their three-year losing streak in the Homecoming float competition by capturing third place with their entry, “Ground the Eagles.” This year was brought to a close with a host of activities including the class play, the senior banquet, the Junior-Senior Prom, Class Day, and graduation. 92 |umors HONOR SOCIETY LETTERMEN Russell Anderson Allen Barnes Allan Bleich Dan Beppler Gary Chapman Glenn Currie Glenn Currie Mike Griffin Steve Dilks Don Jones Kathy Dunnan Larry Kinney Robin Elkin Chip Pacey Carol Johnson Bill Paris Don Jones Jim Rasmussen Ruth Ann LaFary Bob Siebert Janie Lundy Charles Steele Tim Moore Bob Thompson Chip Pacey Larry Turner Mary Phillips Jerry Ulrich Ann Rinkenberger Carol Tachick Pat Tucker Pat Sigler CHEERLEADERS CLASS OFFICERS Gary Chapman, President Bob Peterson, Vice-President Gaye Nuss, Secretary Connie Carlson, Treasurer Connie Carlson Mary Phillips, Girl Representative Carol Johnson Ken Rohlfing, Boy Representative The third year of high school was a memorable one for the Class of ’64.
