 ‘‘Under Paris skies we danced, We talked, we laughed, and we romanced, The sky was clear, the stars shone bright Spring flowers scented that enchanting Paris night ...” This was the atmosphere of the Junior-Senior Prom held May 19, 1961, at Clara Peterson. The sidewalk cake was accented by travel posters de Paris, a crepe paper Eiffel Tower, umbrella-covered flower carts, and rustic Parisian street lights which all combined to illustrate the theme, “Sous Le Ciel de Paris,” (Under Paris Skies). The welcome was given by Junior President Pete Larson, and Dave Erickson responded for the Seniors. Elected to reign over the evening were Seniors Tom Henson and Carolyn Lewis. Entertainment was provided by A1 Pierson and his orchestra. After the dance was over, everyone attended the movie, “Can-Can” at the Paxton Theatre. This completed our Paris theme and an “eve magnifique” for all. 18

After the burning of the Hoopeston dummy in the bonfire prepared by the Letterman’s Club, a short program was held and the winning floats were announced. In the game Friday night, Paxton was victorious over Hoopeston. Providing entertainment at halftime was the marching hand, assisted by the Pep Club. After the game a mixer was held at Clara Peterson School for students and alumni. The Homecoming activities ended Saturday with a dance at the high school. A deep-sea theme was carried out in the decorations. Homecoming for 1961 was indeed a never-to-be-forgotten experience.

Paxton High was represented by eight contestants in eight different categories. Paxton contestants, their divisions, and their ratings are as follows: Tim Moore, Radio Speaking, 3rd place; Mariellen Anderson, Prose Reading, 3rd; Sheila Stewart, Original Monologue, 3rd; Renelda Frump, Serious Reading, 5th; Alice Fox, After Dinner Speaking, 5th; Julie Dyer, Original Oration; and Donna Sharp, Comedy Reading. The third place winners advanced to the sectional contest which was March 3, at Champaign High School, where Mariellen Anderson and Tim Moore placed in their respective divisions. Tim Moore advanced to the state contest held on the campus of the University of Illinois later in the year. 19
