£fUPtV S The students of Paxton High School were very happy to have Melodye Nuss represent our school in the American Field Service program during the summer months of 1961. Melodye was a junior in high school when she was selected to be a foreign exchange student. She took a number of national tests before she was notified of her placement. While studying in Hamburg, Germany, Melodye stayed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Koops and their family. She attended a girls school. However, she found it quite easy to adjust to the German way of life. The community and student body have enjoyed Melodye’s summer from her pictures and speeches. Though Melodye was the first American Field Service student representing Paxton High, we hope we can have many more students representing our school. 11

foUEIG V £ C«AK £ The tunes of “Barefoot Boy”, “Waltzing Matilda”, and “Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport” will always ring in the halls of Paxton High as a memory of Joan Mullin, our AFS student this year. Joanie, a native of the town of Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia, contributed much to our school and community in her role as exchange student. She was a member of the senior class and was also active in Student Council, A Cappella, Girls’ Chorus, Les Chanteurs, and Thespians. Her American family was Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson, Mariellen, Jim, and Mark. During her year here Joan exchanged many Australian customs with us and made numerous speeches here and in neighboring communities. Our Australian lassie intrigued us with her accent, and warmed our hearts with her bubbling personality and enthusiasm in whatever she did. Not only was Joan a wonderful representative of what the AFS Program stands for, but she possessed unusual skill at the piano and often played for the entertainment of her fellow students. So, we wish you the best of everything, Joan, and many thanks for being an ideal representative of which Australia can be proud! 10
