Nt'if Wrfi°N The new addition of the high school consists of five rooms which have improved the health services of our school and much needed space for the agriculture, industrial arts, and boys physical education classes. The addition has doubled the size of the agriculture shop and added a new finishing room connected directly to the industrial arts shop. These new facilities have also provided an office for the athletic director as well as a new health room shared by the school nurse and used as an office for the girls physical education teacher. The preliminaries of this construction were begun in May of 1961 and actual construction began in June. The entire addition was completed in November 1961. The addition was open for the public on the evening of December 31. 6 wsuurms fhe first semester and m’ lp1 er e direction of Mr. Thornburgh for news of the school and it °Pe °r die sec°nd semester, reported the manV interesting feature a VarjIOUS organizations. The REFLECTOR staff, affiliated with the Illinois High School Press Association, published the 1962 year book and made every effort to make it the finest yet. In order to carry out the extensive work, the staff met every day nineth period. Miss Bear advised the group and helped in the actual completion of the REFLECTOR. Co-editors Mariellen Anderson and Judy Larson worked as a team to supervise and produce our annual. Jerry Guy was sports editor for the year, and Ann Peterson was in charge of the people division. These department chairmen were responsible for their respective sections of the book. Two sophomores, Jane Lundy and Ricky Shields, were first-year members of the staff. They worked with experienced members in order to learn the whole process of publishing a yearbook. Jerry and Ricky produced all the art work displayed in the annual. The finished REFLECTOR was the result of the cooperation of the group as a whole. We all hope you enjoy the efforts of the year. 0USI KCSS tsOff The business staff of the Publications Department worked for both the paper staff and the annual staff. They performed many of the routine tasks necessary for the publications. Serving as typists were June Stanford and Judy Foster. Erie Currie and Jim Sims did the photography work and also assisted on REFLECTOR advertising. Donna Carlson was business manager for the BLUE AND GOLD, while Jo Ellen Karr was in charge of REFLECTOR advertising and was business manager for the REFLECTOR. In co-operation with the REFLECTOR and the BLUE AND GOLD, the group sold bookcovers, folders, and mums. Joanie, a native of the town of Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia, contributed much to our school and community in her role as exchange student. She was a member of the senior class and was also active in Student Council, A Cappella, Girls’ Chorus, Les Chanteurs, and Thespians. Her American family was Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson, Mariellen, Jim, and Mark. During her year here Joan exchanged many Australian customs with us and made numerous speeches here and in neighboring communities. Our Australian lassie intrigued us with her accent, and warmed our hearts with her bubbling personality and enthusiasm in whatever she did. Not only was Joan a wonderful representative of what the AFS Program stands for, but she possessed unusual skill at the piano and often played for the entertainment of her fellow students. So, we wish you the best of everything, Joan, and many thanks for being an ideal representative of which Australia can be proud! 10 £fUPtV S The students of Paxton High School were very happy to have Melodye Nuss represent our school in the American Field Service program during the summer months of 1961. Melodye was a junior in high school when she was selected to be a foreign exchange student. She took a number of national tests before she was notified of her placement. While studying in Hamburg, Germany, Melodye stayed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Koops and their family. She attended a girls school. However, she found it quite easy to adjust to the German way of life. The community and student body have enjoyed Melodye’s summer from her pictures and speeches. Though Melodye was the first American Field Service student representing Paxton High, we hope we can have many more students representing our school. 11 r Itf r ATlOW “I’m a little Freshman” was the theme of our first week of school. The one-hundred thirty two members of the class of “65” were initiated in the customary weeklong activities, which were climaxed by an afternoon program “starring” the members of the new Freshman Class. The initiation enabled the new members of Paxton High to meet their upperclassmen and to become accustomed to life in high school. 14 pmxv v vx 15 Homecoming 1%1 was a weekend filled with exciting and memorable events. The Student Council, in cooperation with the athletic department, the cheerleaders, the Pep Club, and the music department, planned for the activities weeks in advance and carried them out very successfully. J he lestivities started on I hursday afternoon with a pep rally conducted by the cheerleaders. At the rally Pam Hartley was crowned Queen to reign over the Homecoming activities. Thursday evening the parade of floats and cars wound through town and then went Scaled, left to right: Sally Rolle, Pam Hartley, Queen; Diane Short Standing: Joan Mullin to lilt' Athletic Field. After the burning of the Hoopeston dummy in the bonfire prepared by the Letterman’s Club, a short program was held and the winning floats were announced. In the game Friday night, Paxton was victorious over Hoopeston. Providing entertainment at halftime was the marching hand, assisted by the Pep Club. After the game a mixer was held at Clara Peterson School for students and alumni. The Homecoming activities ended Saturday with a dance at the high school. A deep-sea theme was carried out in the decorations. Homecoming for 1961 was indeed a never-to-be-forgotten experience. ‘‘Under Paris skies we danced, We talked, we laughed, and we romanced, The sky was clear, the stars shone bright Spring flowers scented that enchanting Paris night ...” This was the atmosphere of the Junior-Senior Prom held May 19, 1961, at Clara Peterson. The sidewalk cake was accented by travel posters de Paris, a crepe paper Eiffel Tower, umbrella-covered flower carts, and rustic Parisian street lights which all combined to illustrate the theme, “Sous Le Ciel de Paris,” (Under Paris Skies). The welcome was given by Junior President Pete Larson, and Dave Erickson responded for the Seniors. Elected to reign over the evening were Seniors Tom Henson and Carolyn Lewis. Entertainment was provided by A1 Pierson and his orchestra. After the dance was over, everyone attended the movie, “Can-Can” at the Paxton Theatre. This completed our Paris theme and an “eve magnifique” for all. 18 sAfEx.4 co vrear Standing, ie t to right: Mary Phillips, Mr. Barth, Advisor: Julie Dyer, Tim Moore Kneeling: Donna Sharp, Alice Lee Fox, Mariellen Anderson, Shiela Stewart The District Speech Contest was held on February 17, 1962, at the Oakwood High School. Regular varsity cheerleaders were Diane Short, Judy Larson, Ruth Ann Noble, Donna Carlson, Carol Johnson and Betty Bement. These girls were originally Pep Club members, and two girls from each upper class were chosen as cheerleaders by a group designated in the Pep Club constitution. New winter outfits were purchased by the athletic department under the supervision of Mrs. Nafziger. They consisted of a navy blue skirt, and a white sweater with the blue and gold school letter attractively placed on the sweater. The Cheerleaders added many new cheers and chants. On of the contributions was a “fight” song adapted by Mr. Hills and enthusiastically received by the student body. The freshman members of the Pep Club served as the Fresh-Soph cheerleaders. These girls cheered at basketball games only and were then eligible to become varsity cheerleaders. 35 VFP CIU3 Seated, left to right: Mrs. Nafziger, Advisor; Jo Ellen Karr, Gerrie Storm, Renelda Frump, Karon Krueger, Patty Krueger Second Row: Connie Carlson, Carol Tachick, Judy Vaught, Sheila Maulding, Jane Judkins, Bonnie Hungerford, Leah Yancey Third Row: Kathy Hustedt, Connie Burklund, Carol Rohlfing, Sally Rolle, Kathy Dunnan, Jane Lundy, Beverly Hustedt, June Stanford Officers- Top to bottom: Mrs. Nafziger, Advisor; Alice Lee Fox, President; Donna Carlson, Secretary; Jo Ellen Karr, Vice President; Janice Merkle, Treasurer 36 Seated, left to right: Donna Zumwalt, Jackie Smith, Janis Carlson, Janice Merkle, Gail Donnelly, Dionne Moline Second Row: Lynn Burklund, Judy Boyer, Peggy Hill, Mary Phillips, Darlene Severins, Alice Lee Fox, Vivian Busboom Third Row: Pat Sigler, Linda Steinfeldt, Sandy Voorhees, Darla Darr, Rhonda Rattenborg, Pat Krumwiede, Robin Elkin The Pep Club completed its third successful of promoting good sportsmanship, raising school spirit, and increasing interest in school activities. Members, along with the cheerleaders, attended all football and basketball games to cheer our Mustangs on to victory. In order to be a varsity or frosh-soph cheerleader one must first be a member of the Pep Club as the cheerleaders are chosen from this group. The Pep Club added to Homecoming activities by riding in the parade and by marching with the band during the half time show. They also sponsored a bake sale which was held in the fall. After becoming a member one must maintain a “C” average in scholastic work. Girls in Pep Club wore a white blouse, a navy blue skirt, gold vest and navy tarn to all games. Once elected into the club, the girls remain it in throughout high school unless they do not maintain the above mentioned standards. 37 sruotNt cou vcu. Members of this organization were chosen by the student body on a basis of leadership, citizenship and character. Council Advisor, Mr. James Smith, was always willing to help the Council in any way, from serving cokes at the football stand to organizing the Leadership Training Convention. The planning of Freshman Initiation began early in August, with initiation being the first activity of the new school year. Organizing Homecoming was next on the agenda; new this year was a mixer following the game, with the Homecoming Dance being held on the following evening. The Christmas program, Student Council and class elections were additional events that required much attention from the Council. A high point in the year’s successes was the election of Terry Hustedt as President of the Champaign District Association of Student Councils. President of the Paxton Council, Vice-President elect, and Joan Mullin, our Foreign Exchange Student attended the State Conference in Chicago where “Apprentices of Democracy” was the theme. Creating an American Field Service fund has been a major project of the 40 SWDCM FACULTY 80ARK Officers- Several years ago the Student-Faculty Board was formed to allow representatives of the students and faculty to work together to improve our school. This year, as in the past, the Board was a major “sounding board” for school problems. This group was selected from the Student Council by a vote of its members and was an important division of our school government. These seventy members took part in sports ranging from ice skating to tumbling. Field hockey, basketball, softball, and bowling were additional activities in which the G.A.A. participated. By sponsoring both a bake sale and an after game dance, the Girl’s Athletic Association earned enough money to send a member to G.A.A. camp this summer. The G.A.A. is affiliated with the state organization and complies with all provisions set up by this body. State awards were given at the year’s end and to unusually active members. At the beginning of the year they made a donation to the Athletic Department for the purchase of the new blue and gold football uniforms. Another of their projects was the production of the football and basketball programs which had previously been done by the Student Council. They also had a work day during the football season to earn money to buy matching socks for the new uniforms. In February they sponsored an all school party after the Mahomet-Seymour basketball game. The traditional fish fry closed the school year for the Letterman’s Club of Paxton High. 49 THA The Future Homemakers of America, an organization for girls enrolled in Home Economics, gave its members an opportunity to serve the school and community, as well as to enjoy themselves through group projects and recreation. The club operated under a point system whereby each member received a set number of points for attending night meetings, rallies, and for committee work. On Class Day, the ten girls with the highest number of points were honored. The F.H.A., sponsored by Miss Kumler, took part in varied activities this year. In November, the girls made gloves for overseas children. During the holiday season, the club made decorations for the Paxton hospital and nursing homes, as well as enjoyed an evening of caroling. The mothers of the members were special guests for the occasion. loan Mullin, our Australian exchange student, was guest speaker for the family meeting held in March. The highlight of the April meeting was a style show of the various sewing projects. At the close of the school term the girls enjoyed their annual field trip. Under Mr. Lyons, their new sponsor, they undertook the task of earning money to purchase a new photographic enlarger. At the first of the year they sold cards and Christmas wrappings, and in March they sponsored an all school party. In addition to these projects, a contest was held during the first semester in which the pictures entered were judged on the following points: contrast, subject, and clarity. The club, which reduced its membership to twelve, was presided over by Erie Currie, with I )arrel Lee as vice-president. The secretary of the club was Gar}’ Brethorst, and Larry Turner was treasurer. The members were required to have taken at least one industrial education course during their years in high school. Meeting once a week during activity period and for occasional night meetings, the boys were able to work on their projects as well as take part in group recreation. 56 The greater part of the year was spent in preparing for the annual trip to Kentucky Lake taken at the end of the school year. The money for this activity was raised by selling candy. Ray Riggleman was chairman of the sale. On January 5, the Industrial Arts Club sponsored an assembly program at which Mr. Reeder showed slides of last year’s fishing trip. All students with one or more years of Latin were eligible to join this organization. A Roman banquet was sponsored by the Latin Club, and much originality was displayed by the committees which planned this affair. Authentic Roman togas and tunics were worn by those attending. The freshmen Latin students served in the capacity of slaves adding atmosphere to the gala event. The Latin Club spent much time during their weekly meetings learning Latin skills and playing Roman games. The club sponsored a bake sale in November which added to the funds of the organization. The general feeling of the members was that the Latin Club had definitely added to their knowledge of Roman history, as well as improving their understanding of the Latin language. 58 w sary c ub Helping students in their research and keeping the library in order were the services of the Library Club this year. Our local club belonged to two organizations, the Student Librarians of East Central Illinois and the Illinois Student Librarians Association. In April the Library Club attended the meeting of SLECI in Gibson City. Other activities were an assembly program, where the club explained the importance of National Library Week, and filmstrips at their regular meetings. The organizations were supervised by Mr. Swenson, head of the department and band director, and by Mr. Hills, director of the choruses. Two new members were added to the “music family” this school term. The Stage Band, a combination of the former Pep and Swing Bands, played at the games and participated in the all-department concerts. Another new group, Les Chanteurs, performed for various civic and school organizations, and also went to contest. Adding color and spirit to the half-time shows at the football games was the marching band. Despite bad weather conditions, the group was able to give two performances. On December 15, the entire department presented a Christmas concert, which was concluded by a very impressive candlelight recessional. In January the band participated in the Ford County Band Festival, held at Roberts. Contest season started on February 24 with the District Solo-Ensemble Contest at Pontiac. The state contest was held in April. All of the organizations, plus those solos and ensembles which were awarded superior ratings at the district contest, performed at this event. The annual spring concert, a product of the combined efforts of the organizations, was given on May 4. The Girl’s Chorus sang at Baccalaureate and the A Cappella at Commencement, ending the choruses’ activities for the year. The band’s final performance was at the Memorial Day Parade. 60 5tAG£ VANP First Rozc, left to right: Judy Butts, Alexa Noble, Jo Anne Bowen, Ann Peterson, Barb keep, Carolyn George, Linda Steinfeldt, Donna Sharp, June Stanford Second Roiv: Kathy Dunnan, Dave Carlson, Virginia Shirley, Steve Kelley, Bob Woodworth Third Row: Steve Dilks, Charles Morin, Gary Brethorst, Dudley Schwartz, Dave Trout, Gary Chapman, Sally Rolle m A new addition to our Music Department was the Stage Band, a combination dance and pep band. Meeting at least once a week, the band prepared for coming events. The Stage Band was present at every pep meeting and home game to add to the school spirit and enthusiasm. At Christmas, the group made their first formal appearance at an assembly program on the afternoon of December 15 and at a concert that evening. The year’s activities were ended by a spring concert which was given along with the other music organizations. WONOtt SOCiEty The National Honor Society, which recognized students of high character, leadership, honor, service, and scholarship, had a very progressive year, introducing many new activities into the club program. The sponsor of the group was Mr. Condit. Probationary members were inducted into the organization as full-fledged members in the fall. During the winter months, the club had the privilege of seeing slides of various foreign countries, which were shown by Mrs. Evelyn Burton and Mrs. Dennis Tachick. New probationary members were taken into the society in February. At the close of the school year, society members, their parents, and the faculty enjoyed a banquet at the Redwood Inn in Rantoul. The most outstanding accomplishment of the organization was the awarding of a scholarship to a senior on Class Day. The money for the scholarship was raised through a stand at a basketball game and a bake sale. This was indeed a forward-looking year for the N.H.S.
