We survived Freshman Initiation as most classes do, and looked forward to our four years of high school. Dick Thompson was elected class president. We were the proud supporters of an undefeated Fresh-Soph football team. Bill Gullett was our class president as Sophomores, and the year passed smoothly, with no outstanding events; except that our reputation as “tradition breakers” was beginning to develop. Our Junior year was our “best”. The Junior Play, “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay,” was considered one of the best in many years. Our float won first prize at HOMECOMING. The Junior-Senior Prom was very beautiful and entertaining—the theme being “Antoine’s.” During this year Tom Caldwell was class president. Again in our Senior year our float won first prize. Pat Hill was Senior Class President. A new yearbook was born—the 1954 REFLECTOR was a smaller, more modern book. We graduated with many pleasant memories to look back on in years ahead. —21— jUriuarml tn Bate KATHRYN MAE PARSONS March 13, 1936 - January 3, 1954 “Near shady wall a rose once grew, Budded and blossomed in God’s free light, Watered and fed by morning dew, Shedding its sweetness day and night.” “Scattering fragrance far and wide, Just as it did in days of yore, Just as it did on the other side, Just as it will forevermore.” Juniors, leaders of tomorrow CLASS OF ’55 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President ..... This year was the 25th anniversary of the F. F. A. in the U. S. It was also the 24th anniversary of our local chapter. Some of the projects undertaken by the F. F. A., are their stands at the football field, during football season, the popcorn machine during the basketball season, and they build and sell hog troughs. Every year the F. F. A. takes an annual trip to some vacation spot for recreational and educational activities. Last year 15 boys traveled by bus to the Lake of the Ozarks. In May 1953 the awards for state farmer degrees are given. Earl Johnson and Walt Gentry each received an award last year. Earnest Chapman was selected as the Star State Farmer of section 17 of the Future Farmers of America. I started looking for a farmhouse so that I could find someone to pull me out. It was then that I noticed some chimney smoke coming from the midst of a grove of trees. Thinking that this was a farmhouse I started toward the grove, but as I neared it, I noticed that the smoke did not come from a farmhouse but from a prefabricated hut that had been set up not too long before. Upon entering the hut, I noticed that it looked like Mr. Belford’s laboratory after some experiment on electricity, except that the equipment that was being used there looked much more complicated than anything that I had ever seen. As I gazed around the room, my eyes came to rest on something that looked like a giant television set. On it were the words, Time Machine.” Being of an inquisitive nature, I decided to turn the dial to the year 1969 for a prediction for the Class of ’54. This is what I saw. Since Paxton had become a thriving metropolis of forty thousand with sixty old folks homes, there was no need for our class members to move away. All of our class had become employed (or unemployed) in some way in the city of Paxton. Professional wrestling had reached its peak in Paxton, and featured on the billings were Ernie, alias “The Chest,” Chapman, and The Mighty Atlas,” Don Van Derryt. Billed at the local “dive” was Albert, “Hot Lips,” Werner, who was fast becoming known as the second Harry James. It seemed that Robert Hanson was making millions in his “Dispose-All” business. Chief sewer cleaner for the thriving enterprise was Dick Grady. The morale of patients had improved one-hundred per cent at the new Paxton Hospital with the coming of two new nurses, Janet Sandstedt and Carolyn Stout. Janice Fields had become a major traffic problem as she buzzed around the town in a cob truck. Also, causing the pedestrians quite a bit of trouble was Loretta Glazik. She had become the first woman in history to win the Indianapolis Speedway race. “The Sixteen-Way-Stretch Girdle” was the new fad. Dean Erwin had just gone into mass production of his fabulous discovery. Models for his firm were Barbara Henson and Shirley Rasmus. I noticed that Philip Bowen was running a girl’s finishing school. When those girls graduated, they were really finished! Roger Arnold was the hog calling champion for Ford County. He was working on the thousand acre farm of Don White, who had become a large scale farmer. Working as dairy maids on Don’s farm were Lila Mae Saldeen and Delores Smith. The D R was prospering under the new management of Evelyn Davis and Judy Riemenschneider. Now you couldn’t get anything in the booths for less than fifty-one cents. A big business executive, Junior Rodenbeck was hiring secretary after secretary. Just recently resigned from the staff were LaVonne Eppard, Shirley Connour, and Mary Lou Foster. It seems that Junior kept only one chair in his office. —92— THE CLASS PROPHECY Dick Thompson was pursuing his life’s ambition in coaching the T. F. G. W. D. L. T. K. T. R. basketball team. This was the “Team For Guys Who Don’t Like To Keep Training Rules.” Curfew was three A. M., and all players had to be able to stagger onto the floor by themselves. Showing at the Paxton Theater was the movie “Love ’Em and Leave ’Em,” featuring Roger Hill in the leading role. I saw that Janice Kemp was also pursuing an acting career (and men). She was fast becoming known as “The Next-To-The-Last Of The Hot Mamas.” The rubber was still thick on the bricks of Paxton’s streets with Jerry Frank the chief contributor. Jerry had invented a new jet sports car along with Harry Wilson, his chief mechanic. The Metropolitan Opera Company had given Nancy Weaver time off to appear on the local “Broadway” in the Italian musical “Oh, Go Homa.” I noticed that Judy Parsons was in the show’s chorus line. Frank was in the front row every night. Mary Ellen Baier had replaced Betty Crocker as the most well known cook in the country. Her helpers in the test kitchen were Beverly Scott, Leila Sypult, and Karen Gillespie. I was not surprised when I saw that Tom Caldwell was voted “Husband of The Year.” He was still taking care of “Mommy” . . . and the fourteen kids. Because of her excellent record in school, Donna Judy had succeeded Mr. Shields as Principal of Paxton High School when he retired to devote more time to his banana farm. She had appointed Doris Niccum and Martha Kirby as her top assistants for the tremendous job. Valiantly patrolling the trails of the West Creek Timber was Forest Ranger Kenny Keefe. At his side, painting landscapes, was Marybelle. William, “Horace Greeley,” Pennington had quit THE RECORD and was running his own paper. His famous slogan, since Gene Mattoon had started his interplanetary rocketship service, was “Go Up Young Man, Go Up.” Irene Wolfe, the lady evangelist, was touring Africa. With her on her safari was Nancy Mullinax who increased the attendance with her spiritualistic dancing. Each month at the unemployment office you could see Bob Swanson getting his unemployment check. It seems that he had become a beach comber at Bayles Lake. The state of the nation was in peril with the election of the first woman president, Pat Hill. B. I.; and Barbara Van Ostrand was appointed head of the Marriage Bureau. I couldn’t find any trace of what I was doing, except a paper clipping stating that I had disappeared a few minutes after the new REFLECTOR was issued. —93— SPEECH CONTESTS The district speech contest was held February 27, 1954 at Gibson City.
