PAWNEE HIGH SCHOOL THE 1969 INDIAN ECHOES FOREWORD This is our 1969 Indian Echoes and we present it to you proudly and with the hope that its pages will spark the light of memory in the coming years. Frequent use of pictures and sketches of the lamp posts has Ijeen made in this yearbook. Amid the movement of life, the significance of simple things is often overlooked. For a period of fifty-five years students of Pawnee High School have passed by the twin lamp posts each school day. These lamp posts, like the spirit of PHS have survived tragedy and destruction. Twice fire has leveled Pawnee High to the ground, but the unity and loyalty of her students like the lamp posts have remained. In 1962 the bases of the lamp posts were rebricked to match the new school building. The lamp posts are positioned to provide light as we enter PHS, but they also brighten the way as we depart. We, the 1969 staff would like to acknowledge the assistance of Mrs. Alyce Foster, Mr. Axel Sandstrom, Mrs. Ruth Harms, Anker Studio, and our advertisers. 2 CONTENTS 5 11 26 36 43 50 62 ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS GRADE SCHOOL UNDERCLASSMEN SENIORS ADVERTISEMENTS IN MEMORIAM We the Pawnee High School Class of 1969 do hereby dedicate this, our Indian Echoes, to the memory of Ted Sandidge. Twenty years is a short span in measured time, but Ted accomplished much in two decades. From 1961 -1965, Ted was a contributing part of PHS. His involvement in activities was practically guaranteed, his willingness generated enthusiasm, his contagious laughter won friends, and his attitudes reflected affection and concern for humanity. As achievement cannot be determined in material terms alone, a successful life cannot be judged solely by length. Ted's existence embodied the true meaning of life, and thus, he will always be a part of the living. It was truly a night to remember. 12 THREE COINS IN A FOUNTAIN Susan Busby and Carroll Bailey, Crown Bearers; Kay Vangeison, Queen; John Bailey, Co-Captain; Kenny Jenkins, Escort. SHADES OF FALL Every year the football team picks candidates for the Homecoming Queen. There is one Freshman candidate, one Sophomore candidate, two Junior candidates, and two Senior candidates. The student body votes on a candidate the day of the bonfire, and then at the bonfire that night, the queen is announced. She reigns over the whole weekend as queen. Saturday morning, she leads her court in the parade and circles the football field at half-time. The captain of the football team presents her with an autographed football. That night, she is crowned Queen of the Homecoming Dance. The Student Council is always in charge of the dance, and this year the theme was Shades of Fall. Five floats entered the Homecoming parade this year, each showing the hard work of the class which it represented. The most beautiful float was the Sophomore's Victory Lane and the most original float was the Senior's Snoopy's on our Side. The Marching Band led the parade and furnished the bystanders as well as the rest of the parade with welcomed music. Queen Kay and her court added an extra touch of beauty to the parade. 14 KAY REIGNS AT HOMECOMING '69 First Most Original, Snoopy's On Our Side Senior Float First Most Beautiful, Victory Lane' Sophomore Float Brenda watches Terry open his Christmas gift, a Playboy towel. Mr. Stevens joins the girls in a Christmas dance. Shari Lindsay and Terry Bowne are shown checking name tags on the packages under the Christmas tree. Following tradition, the Freshmen handed out presents to the student body. Earlier in the week names were exchanged among the students. The Christmas Dance, sponsored by the Student Council, was held on December 19. Music provided by the Diamond Railroad was enjoyed. A Christmas Dance is sponsored each year by the industrious Student Council. 17 FFA recorded another fine year of activi ties and projects. One of these activities was a tractor pull on Sept. 8. Donations of $250 were given as prizes. The surrounding farmers were active in the events. Each year these girls collect food and clothing for needy families in the community. Money making projects such as bake sales and doughnut sales are used to make money for annual trips to Chicago or St. Louis. Spring is a busy time of year for the girls with such things as FHA week, cherry pie sales, Mother-Daughter Banquet, and the Spring Style Show. YEARBOOK TAKES ON A NEW LOOK Nancy Tilley (Co-editor), Mrs. Ruth Harms (Sponsor), Linda White (Editor) The 1969 Yearbook Staff has tried to present this year's annual in a way you will always remember. We have added the Spring Supplement to bring you a more complete coverage of the spring school activities. The grade school section of the yearbook has been added to give you a complete coverage of the 7th and 8th grade activities. The book is financed through yearbook sales, advertisements, and school cushion sales. We wish to thank all the people who have helped with our yearbook. We hope you will enjoy this yearbook as much as we have enjoyed working on it. 21 Freshmen: Debbie Henry, Mary Beth Davis, and Mary Bosie Sophomore: Jim Cashen 1968 HONOR STUDENTS Every year in the month of April a small group of students are honored for their high academic achievement. On April 17, 1968 eleven students were honored at the Eighth Annual Academic Banquet sponsored by the Lions Club. This select group is named each year following the fourth grading period. In order to be named as an honor student the boy or girl must maintain a 4.5 average for the first semester and the fourth grading period. Students who attend this banquet for the first time are given an honor student pin. Each year that they return a numeral pin guard is presented to be attached to the pin. Juniors: Tom Murphy, Tom Thompson, and Nancy Tillev 22 The problem of what to do with study hall time was solved beautifully by eight seniors who volunteered to tutor grade school pupils with reading difficulties. The students meet with the children regularly from 2 to 5 times weekly and help them with oral reading, spelling and other language arts skills. A weekly seminar is held with Mrs. Nichols to discuss educational methods, materials, innovations, and special problems encountered in teaching. For the past four years. Pawnee High School has been our lamppost. The people we have known, the lessons we have learned, and the activities in which we have been involved will serve as beacons to light our-path in the coming years. As seniors, we depart with many memories, much hope, and great expectations. We feel that our 1969 Indian Echo has successfully captured many highlights of this school year. We will long remember the events of these past four years, but now it's time to leave this portion of our lives behind and begin to find our own way. Farewell to PHS.
