The World Beyond In an effort to keep the Persian Gulf open to navigation, the United States began in July to escort vessels to protect them from Iran. In September the U.S. Navy blew up an Iranian ship that was caught laying mines in the Gulf. Several mines were confiscated. President and Mrs. Reagan greeted Pope Paul U when he arrived in Miami to begin a nine-city tour of the United States. Marine Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, was a key official in the plan to finance anti-government rebels in Nicaragua with money from arms sales to Iran. In testimony before the Iran-Contra hearings in Washington D.C, North became somewhat of a celebrity. Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart was forced to drop his bid for the presidency after it was reported that he was romantically involved with Don- na Rice, a 29-year-old aspiring actress and model from Miami. Television evangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakkcr said farewell to the P.T.L ministry in March. Jim Bakker resigned after confessing to a sexual encounter with a young woman. Tammy Bakker bowed out of the broadcasts to undergo treatment for drug dependency. 50 Pawnee High School Dennis Conner, the man who lost the America s Cup in 1983, won it back tour years later. The Stars 9c Stripes completed a 4-0 sweep over the Australia's Kookaburra 111 in the race that took place in Australia. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco celebrated its 50th bir- thday About 250.000 people jammed onto the bridge for an an- niversary walk across the span Another 500,000 packed the bridge approaches but were denied access because the engineers feared the span could not support the weight. An earthquake that measured 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Southern California in October. It was not a catastrophic quake, but the damage was extensive. The Dow Jones industrial stock average dropped 508 points, the largest in history, on Monday, October 19. Some called it a crash,’' others called a meltdown’’ and others called it Black Monday Whatever it was, it stripped $500 billion from the market value of U.S. securities. In the six years since Americans first heard of a mysterious immunity-robbing disease firm which no one recovers, AIDS has killed nearly 25,000 Americans, millions of dollars have poured into medical research and President Reagan has proclaimed the plague Public Health Enemy No. I.” Mini-Mag 51 Sports in the News The 1987 season was exciting for O.U. and O.S.U. Oklahoma University, winners of the Big Eight Conference, earned another trip to the Orange Bowl in Miami. Kirby Puckett and Jeff Raerdon of the Minnesota Twins celebrate their World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Twins won the seventh and final game of the series 4-2. A 24-day strike by the N.F.L. players ended in mid-October when the union capitulated and went to court instead of trying to fight the club owners at the bargaining table. As a result of the strike, fans were introduced to a first in pro- fessional football — the scab teams, a maneuver on the part of the owners to discourage the strikers. When asked in a poll to name their favorite sport. Pawnee students voted in the following way: 1. Football 2. Basketball 3. Wrestling Though not a sports activity, watching the nightly news to find out details on the barge became a daily event for many Americans. The barge, filled with 3,128 tons of garbage, became a national joke and a symbol of the nation's worsening problem with solid waste management. The barge, looking for a place to dump its cargo, was banned by six states and three foreign countries before an incinerator reduced it to ash. Two of the cop entertainers of the year were Whitney Houston ami Madonna. Though they were popular among Pawnee High students, they did not win the favorite singer category in the poll conducted at the high school.
