BRUIN STAFF Co-Editor Co-Editor TONIE WALDON CATHY BRUNS Co-Editor BETH ANN BOWEN Sponsor MR. RON MULLIN Every Wednesday after school a busy but loud group of students met in Room 6 to work on the Bruin for 1970. Many extra hours of work went into the production of this book, and it is the desire of the staff that this book will serve as a reminder of those happy high school days for all our students. Thousands of pictures were taken for the book, but they do not start to equal the number of typographical errors, misplaced pages, etc. 1 that the staff members encountered during the year. A typical yearbook staff meeting finds the staff looking at pictures to determine which one to use. 36 1st ROW, 1 to r: Dennis Schulze, Cathy Bruns, Kathy McCray, Marilyn Heisler, Ruth Bird, Connie Tannahill, Shelley Wills, 2nd ROW, 1 to r: Alfred Horsechief, Leon Robinson, Bobby Tanner, James Novotny, Mr. Lawrence. During the years they played for the Pawnee Bears, these boys gave the crowds plenty to cheer about. Three members of the class were honored by beings named to the All-District team this year. Several others were given Honorable Mention on the same team. 54 BRYCE PICKERING LEROY DOWNS DENNIS SOUTHERN KENNETH McCRAY MIKE WILLIAMS - Junior GEARY LEFORCE - Junior HAROLD GREEN - Junior GORDON HOWELL - Junior LEON ROBINSON - Junior VIC BRUNS - Sophomore BILLY McCALL - Sophomore BOBBY TANNER - Sophomore The Bears opened District play with a win over Newkirk. 32-20, in the second game of the year. The following week Shidler was defeated to give the team a 2-1 record. With some of the strongest teams in the state on the schedule, the wins did not come frequently after that, and the team ended the season with a 3-7 record. Not once were the boys defeated by a big margin and with the caliber of competition they faced taken into consideration, one realizes that we did have a FINE team. The championship of the North State Conference slipped out of the Bears' grasp after two narrow defeats at the hands of Hominy. The season provided many thrills for the fans and the boys are to be commended for the excellent record they established. 59 1st ROW: Roger Creager, Steve Kistler, Joe Day, Glen Boyer, George Taulman, 2nd ROW: Mr. Childers, Charlie Bowen, Leon Robinson, Gajy Tucker, Lee Wills, Harold Rolland, Nick Privett. Baseball is a new sport to Pawnee High School, having been played for only four years. It is difficult to get good coverage of the baseball season since the yearbook must be sent in before the season starts. The 1969 team performed admirably and won several games even though they played some tough competition. We are looking forward to an even better year in 1970. When the cold March winds blow the dirt miles high, you can find the baseball boys out in it doing their part to bring fame to Pawnee High School. 60 L TO R: Gordon Howell, Alfred Horsechief, Lester Ingle, Mike Sanders, Roger Scott, Joe Brensing, Dennis Schulze, Ronnie LeForce, Earl Ryan, Steve Alley. In the 1969 season the Pawnee Bears qualified for the State Track Meet in six different events. The Bears were also crowned champions of die North State Conference and of the Pawnee Invitational Meet. With many of the same boys returning for this year's team, we can look forward to another good season in 1970. 61 JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL AND TRACK 1st ROW: Kent Rice, Arnold Bowman, Roger Bryant, Ricky Venable, David Kline, Pat Turner, Randy Dailey, Duane Avants, Kris Kline, Terry Perrine, Rex Bowman, 2nd ROW: Roy LeForce, Ricky Van Deventer, Everett Loman, Jimmy Elston, Tommy Ryan, Tommy Stokes, Morris Brien, Frank Gentry, Sylvester Willis, Eli Page, 3rd ROW: Kim McGuire, Martin Wade, Lee Alley, John Maltsberger, Joe Day, Ted Crocker, Delbert Stanbrough, Walter Long, Chester Leading Fox, Leslie Dallas, Mr. Poe, Mr. Stephens, 4th ROW: James Novotny, Marty Kline, Randy Cartmell, David Dailey, Danny Williams, Butch Buchanan, David Ferguson, Ken Boyce, Joe Maltsberger. 1st ROW: Terry Perrine, Kent Rice, Roy LeForce, John Maltsberger, Frank Gentry, Arnold Bowman, ROW 2: Morris Brien, Delbert Stanbrough, George Taulman, Tommy Stokes, Joe Maltsberger, Kim McGuire, David Kline, Mr. Poe, ROW 3: Lee Alley, Randy Cartmell, Martin Wade, Danny Williams, Ken Boyce, Billy McCall, Archie Willis, Charley Howell, ROW 4: Paul Sanders, Joe Allenbaugh, Butch Buchanan, Nick Privett, Vic Bruns, Gary Tucker, Bobby Tanner, Bill Williams, Jerry Ryan. 62 JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL L TO R: Frank Gentry, Tommy Stokes, Joe Maltsberger, Horace Lyons, David Ferguson, Vance Horsechief, Paul Sanders, Martin Wade, Steve Kistler, Lee Alley, Sylvester Willis, David Kline. AND MISS PHS MISS BETH ANN BOWEN AND MR. ALFRED HORSECHIEF One of the highest honors that can come to a student is to be named as the winner of the Mr. and Miss PHS contest. Any student in the Senior Class may be nominated by the student body. From this group of nominees, the two boys and two girls who receive the most votes in an election become finalists. These four are then voted on again and the boy and girl who receive the most votes are the lucky people who have been chosen as the best all-around boy and girl in school. BRUIN QUEEN -JI SUSIE STOKES The Bruin Queen is selected by judges from out of town at the annual Bruin Queen Contest which consists of having the candidates, dressed in formal gowns, walk across the stage. The girls are judged on dress, poise, carriage and charm. Seven finalists are selected by the judges and from these seven, the queen is chosen. Susie Stokes, a senior, was the lucky girl chosen this year. 67 BRUIN ATTENDANTS MISS JUDY STOKES MISS NEILDA CREAGER , MISS CATHY BRUNS I MISS CONNIE TANNAHILL MISS MARILYN HEISLER FOOTBALL QUEEN JAN ROBINSON Jan is a senior this year. The basketball boys nominate one girl from each class to be a candidate for basketball queen. From these three girls the student body selects the winner. This year, Queen Treca reigned over the Pawnee-Cleveland basketball game. One of the mementos presented to the queen each year is a basketball charm to remind her always of this occasion. 70 FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL ATTENDANTS MISS CATHY BRUNS MISS ROBERTA SMITH 71 BAND QUEEN The band queen is elected by members of the band each year. We have put in many hours preparing this book, and we are sure we have made many errors, used pictures of some people excessively, and have slighted others; but we think the book will serve its purpose as a history of the school year 1969-70. no Tonie Waldon, Editor ® TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY 'The World's Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made'' - ' v • ' • - _. . , 'r - -r ■ ■ % €' r 3£.‘ ■ X ' vVV • Vr' ' . : i£-. • wV n -rf-i 7? •• • . • • . --. —.'..• '•' . • •• • « , •• '■“• •• '’ T ■ -. ••■ •«•.« __ . •. y Vv . ..
