Many hours are spent reviewing game films in this office. Three members of the football team were named to the All-District team. They are Max Heis-ler, Roger Robbins, and Bobby Bryant. All three boys are seniors. Bears Defeat Cleveland In Homecoming Game The Bears did not have as successful a season as they had hoped t but there were moments when happiness reigned supreme. The last few seconds of the Perry game provided enough thrills to last a year, and the sweet revenge as the Bears routed Cleveland made fans do plenty of cheering. The team members, however, were allowed only a few hours to relish each success before it was time to begin work for the next game. Injuries early in the season to some key returning players forced the others to play in different positions, but they adjusted well and continued to improve as the year progressed. The team began practicing in late August and worked diligently in spite of the heat. Practice was held twice daily for several weeks, and each session was a long one. In looking back over the past season, one can't help remembering the long runs made by Leon Green, the jarring tackles made by Roger Robbins and Bobby Bryant, the pass interception made by Pat Jones against Perry and the tackle Coach Henry made on the sidelines, and the excitement of being in the running for the District title. All the boys are to be commended for their hard work and for the gallant bid they made for victory each time they went on the field. Coach Henry summed it up pretty well when he said, I'm proud to be associated with a group of young men who are willing to give lOO o effort, and this group of boys gave their best when they were called on. 48 Coach Henry gives the team a last min-ute pep talk just before the Cleveland game. The B team was organized for just that purpose, and all schools in the conference with the exception of Newkirk and Fairfax have such a team. The Pawnee version is made up of Juniors and Sophomores ana some of them have shown great improvement since the beginning of the year. The experience gained while playing on the B team makes a boy better prepared for a possible starting assignment on the Bears team later in school. The B team started the year with four consecutive wins. L. D. Byrd, pastor of a local church, has been coaching the team this year since Mr. Childers has been in the service. 54 The Record For 68-69 A TEAM RECORD Pawnee 46 Vinita 44 Pawnee 58 Nowata 57 Pawnee 53 Claremore 55 Pawnee 61 Shidler 40 Pawnee 55 Drumright 58 Pawnee 67 Newkirk 37 Pawnee 54 Blackwell 33 Pawnee 48 Casady 58 Pawnee 54 Bethany 52 Pawnee 54 Cleveland 48 Pawnee 60 Hominy 50 Pawnee 47 Fairfax 50 Pawnee 75 Cleveland 59 Pawnee 72 Blackwell 50 Pawnee 69 Perry 56 Pawnee 61 Shidler 59 Pawnee 65 Hominy 54 Pawnee 81 Newkirk 53 Pawnee 62 Cleveland 54 Pawnee 55 Fairfax 53 Pawnee 64 Drumright 73 Pawnee 53 Perry 65 B TEAM SCORES Pawnee 53 Shidler 37 Pawnee 36 Drumright 29 Pawnee 47 Blackwell 36 Pawnee 56 Hominy 45 Pawnee 36 Cleveland 41 Pawnee 45 Blackwell 41 Pawnee 61 Perry 56 Pawnee 59 Shidler 56 Pawnee 50 Hominy 38 Pawnee 53 Cleveland 49 Pawnee 43 Drumright 39 Pawnee 61 Perry 52 Sophomores Leon Robinson, Gordon Howell, and Charlie Bowen provided the spark to lead B team. Anyone who thinks basketball is an easy game to play should trade places with hard working Alfred Horsechief. Basketball is not a non-contact sport as Skizzie Johnson can tell you. This took place in the Pawnee-Fairfax game. 55 The photo on the left shows Roger Robbins scoring a lay up against Perry. In the middle is a pep talk during time out. At the right is a half time strategy talk. Bears Are Conference Champs The 1968-69 season began with the Nowata Tournament in which the Bears won the second place trophy. The boys started slowly in the tourney, but late in the third quarter of the second game they came to life and it took highly rated Claremore an overtime to take the first place trophy away from Pawnee. In early January a second trophy was won by the Bears. This one was for the Consolation Championship of the Central State Tournament. February brought still another trophy to Pawnee. This one was the coveted North State Conference Championship trophy. The final conference game for the Bears was with Fairfax, and by winning they could be the champs; by losing they would be tied for the championship. The boys wanted no ties, and defeated Fairfax for the crown. The conference record for Pawnee was 9-1. It takes more than five boys to make a team. This picture shows the bench during a game with the boys and some of the faithful fans watching the action. 56 Skizzie Johnson leaves these Fairfax defenders far behind. The fast break pays off again as Roger Robbins scores on a lay up. Season Has Many Highlights Highlights of the year other than winning trophies were defeating Cleveland three times, sidelining conference favorite Hominy by defeating them twice, and defeating Fairfax after losing to them earlier in the season. This team was very interesting to watch. Though the boys were small, they made up for it with hustle and desire. One lady in Pawnee was heard to say. I love watching this team because they never give up and they’re not selfish. No one tries to be a star; they all play together. The fans came out in record numbers once they watched the Bears play a few times, and support from the fans always helps the players to do better. At the end of the regular season, the Bears had compiled a record of 16-6 and looked forward to the playoffs with high expectations. Unfortunately, the yearbook had to be completed before the playoffs started. Whatever the results were, the boys on this team have made us proud of them and they can look back on this year and say, IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR. With Fairfax defenders all around, Alfred Horsechief goes up for a shot and two points. At the right, Roger Robbins gets in the scramble for a rebound. Another Pawnee player has command of it. 57 1968 Track Team Goes To State 1st Row L to R: Ronnie Gray, David Tanner, Bryce Pickering, Steve Alley, Leon Felix, Dennis Schulze, Jim Riemer, Alfred Horsechief, Mike Sanders, and Max Heisler. Coach Henry is also pictured. The 1968 track season was one that fans of the Pawnee Bears will long remember. The team narrowly missed winning the Conference Track meet when they were defeated by Newkirk by one point. The Bears later proved that this was just Newkirk's lucky day as they defeated the Newkirk team in a meet held in Pawnee. When the Bears entered the OSU Relays, it was with the determination to win, and win they did. Coach Henry was presented a wrist watch for the fine showing made by his team. One of the relay teams was presented a trophy for winning their race. In the State track meet, Billy Nuttle, complete with dark glasses, placed second in the two-mile run for the highest finish by a Pawnee boy. Max Heisler was fourth in the Broad Jump and Alfred Horsechief was fifth in the mile run. With several of the members of the 1968 team returning, the 1969 team can look forward to a good season. The action was taking place in the Cubs vs. Fairfax game at Pawnee. There's plenty of action when the ball comes off the backboard. Pawnee Played Pawnee The Cubs played in the Pawnee Invitational Tournament early in the year and won a trophy. Probably one of the highlights of this tournament was the semifinal game when Pawnee A played Pawnee B. The A team won and advanced to the finals. High School Honor Society The people pictured on this page are the top 10 per cent scholastically in our school. The State Honor Society is announced at the close of the first semester each year and is quite an honor indeed for those who make it. The grades used in selecting those on the Honor Society are those of the first semester of the current year and the last semester of the preceding year. Listed on the Honor Society this year are six Freshmen, eight Sophomores, nine Juniors, and five Seniors. Girls outnumber the boys seventeen to eleven. 63 Members of the Honor Society are presented with a certificate at the end of the year signifying that they have done outstanding work. All also are nominated for the Beta Club as a result of this achievement. The Honor Society is announced at the end of the first semester and the grades which are used in determining the members are those from the last semester of the seventh grade and the first semester of the eighth grade for the students in grade eight and the first semester of the seventh grade is all that is considered for seventh grade students. Only six boys in Junior High are listed on the Honor Society, so this should be a challenge for the boys to see if they can't get more boys than girls on the next list of Honor students. At the end of the school year the students are presented with a certificate signifying that they have done outstanding work during the year. 80 Congratulations to all the seventh and eighth students who are on the State Honor Society.
