I Pawnee High School Pawnee, Oklahoma wn e e High School TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY CLASSES ATHLETICS ROYALTY ORGANIZATIONS JUNIOR HIGH GRADE SCHOOL ADVERTISING IN MEMORY OF PAWNEE BILL The cover was designed in tribute to the late Gordon W. Lillie, Pawnee Bill '. This 1967 edition of the ’’Bruin commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of his passing in 1942. The citizens of Pawnee probably owe more to him than to any other man. He has done much not only for his town, but also for his state and nation. He was one of the original teachers and interpreters at the Pawnee Indian Agency, the first school in the county and one of the first in our state. The Pawnees made him their White Chief in gratitude for his work with them. He was active in the settlement of Oklahoma. He was a Boomer and led many settlers into this area. He lived in the age of the Indians, cowboys, and riffraff of the frontier, days of territorial government. He, more than anyone else, was responsible for Oklahoma's statehood. He was instrumental in preserving the West as it really was. Two of his efforts were his traveling Wild West Show and his Old Town. He chose to build his home among the Pawnee Indians whom he knew so well. He spent over $100, 000 in constructing his mansion on Blue Hawk Peak. Now made into a museum and state park, his home aids the community by generating tourism. He was a great conservationist. He became deeply involved in the cause of preserving the American Bison, and at one time had a large herd of these animals. He once owned the very land on which our school is built. We cannot thank him enough for his many acconplishments in our behalf. We have designed this Bruin in his honor in order that we may commemorate his death and repaember his work, which has not died, but lives on. 3 DEDICATION The Yearbook Staff and Student Council of Pawnee High School take great pride in dedicating the 1967 ’’Bruin to Mrs. Emmagene Bird, chemistry and biology instructor. She has been not only a helpful and considerate teacher, but also a most sincere friend to all those who have known her. She has been kind and sympathetic in understanding the everyday problems of her students. She has been patient in her teaching and has been an inspiration for all of us to work harder and to search for new knowledge. We hereby dedicate this Bruin in her honor hoping that it may in some way partially repay her for her whole-hearted, unselfish devotion. 4 BOB SANDERS Vice Pres.
