TAMBERLYN A. PEC. IS. 1960-MAY 1987 Tami LaVigne was employed as Business Teacher in 1985 by the Pawnee City Public Schools. She was also appointed as class sponsor for the class of 1987. Mrs. LaVigne was an active person. Despite her 47 mile journey she was always at school early, was full of energy, and had a happy, go lucky personality. She and her husband Todd were very involved with the students and their activities. They could be seen at almost all of the school events, and Mr. LaVigne captured the year in pictures for the students. On May 5, 1987 on her way home from school to pick up her husband for the Athletic Banquet, Tami LaVigne was killed in an automobile accident. Her death was sudden and tragic for the community of Pawnee City and she will be missed. Got Claik . . . Elementary Classes: First. Second, and Third, with Instructors. Elementary Classes: Fourth. The freshmen class attacked their first year of high school with a great amount of enthusiasm! The'class of 1990 is a relatively small class but you would never know it by listening to them walk down the hall. Early into the year, the freshmen made their mark at P.C.H.S. by placing third in the Homecoming Hall Decorating Contest. Many of them contributed to the school by participating in athletics, music, drama, speech, FHA, and FFA. They haven't done much fund-raising yet but have big plans for the coming years. The class of 1990 had a relatively slow but typical freshman year. I'm sure we'll be hearing more from them in the years to come! “The people here are nothing like I expected! Everyone is so friendly and nice to me, I feel almost like I've known them forever. I went out for basketball and volleyball and I was in band and it was all so exciting. Pawnee City is nothing like I expected it would be and I'm glad — It’s great! — Shedera Bausch Mike Farwell Scott Habegger Jon Harkness 6 Becky Harnisch Stacie Inglis Kathy Kalina Chad King Tina Luedders Gene Richards Top left Sarah Dods. The sophomores participated in many extra- curricular activities including sports, instrumental and vocal music. FFA and FHA. They were a part of our Homecoming events and the Jr., Sr. Prom was also on their agenda for this year as five boys and five girls were chosen to serve the Prom dinner as well as entertain by performing skits. The Sophomores were also put be- hind the wheel for the first time in Driver's Education. Also the Sophomores put on a soup supper to raise money that will be added to their class fund. Most likely this will go towards next years Prom that will be put on by this class when they are Juniors. The class ol '89 Is the first to receive their class rings as sophomores. The Junior class spent their school year in many different activities. Some took tests and notes, or participated in sports, or were in cheerleading. Everyone left with fond memories of prom. Friendships, one of the best things about h'igh school, were created, while many old friendships were renewed. Juniors felt that their friends were one of the most important parts of school, providing help in school work, someone to joke with, and in bad times, a shoulder to cry on. Not all the fun of the year went on in school. Many of the fun times took place outside the building. Groups got together at Friday night dances, at the Jug, or cruised the strip in order to see and be seen. Even though many complained about school, all found that fun times are still around, even in school. All these activities, while they are fun now, will be more important in the future, when they become fantastic memories. When these memories show people how much fun and enjoyment school brought, they will see that these were the best days of our lives. Nicole Buss Tina Glynn- Ok Nicole, this ones yours.” August 18th brought 19 girls to the Pawnee City gym to start two-a-day practices filled with hard work, sweat and dedication. These ladies were anticipating the start of a new volleyball season-the disappointment of losing the thrill of winning, and the fun that comes with being part of a team. The volleyball team experienced many successes this year, such as getting 2nd in the Dawson-Verdon Tourna- ment. and winning 11 games throughout their season. With these successes came honors for certain girls on the team. Those receiving honors were Nicole Buss, All Con- ference 1st team, All State Honorable Mention Omaha World Herald, Lincoln Journal All State 2nd team; Tina Glynn, 2nd team All Conference. Although the team will feel the loss of it’s six starting Seniors, they are again anticipating another “Super Charged season next year. Nicole Buss. Gina Koll. Tina Glynn, Rochelle Wielage. This quote was made by a Boston Red Sox player after they were defeated in the World Se- ries. What does this have to do with Pawnee City High School Football? This statement tells what the Indians felt-a lot of hurt. The Indians started their season with a win over NCL but could only conquer one other team this year that being Falls City Sacred Heart. The boys put in a lot of time, a lot of sweat and a lot of sprints but the year wasn't to be theirs. Pawnee seemed to be pla- gued by injury causing many grid- ders to sit the sidelines. Don’t get us wrong-many good things happened too. All Confer- ence selections included Jason Kennedy. D.J. Weddle, Jim Brad- bury, Mike Lang, and Doug Bedea, with Kennedy also receiving the Omaha World Herald Academic All State award, and recognition in the Beatrice Sun as player of the week. As all athletics do, this year boiled down to the thrill of victory, winning the FCSH game in the last seconds; the agony of defeat, being beat by Odell; and the fun of the game, Ice Box Blecha converging the extra points. The boys that came out for football left the field in October as men who had learned, taught, and grown; no matter how the record ended. 1986 Football Team: Front Row: Nick Cline. Shane Friedly. The girls tal- lied an impressive 15-4 record this year. They also brought home the Gal- axy Conference 1st place trophy for the 3rd year in a row. This year 3 such athletes were honored with all conference awards. Gina Koll and Tina Glynn were named 2nd team and Nicole Buss was named to the 1st team. Nicole also received the honor of 1st team All-State in the Lincoln Jour- nal and Star, and 2nd team All-State in the Omaha World Herald. The year ended in mixed emotions. The girls did not win the key games that they had hoped to win, and be- cause of this they felt the grasp of dis- appointment, but they worked hard, had fun, and won a lot of games and for this they felt pride in themselves and the Pawnee City Basketball Pro- gram. “We took Galaxy Confer- ence for the third year in a row, I hope next year the Indians can carry on the PCHS pride. The first few games after Christmas we played well, too, then the complications set in. We should have never finished the season with the record we did. Out of thirteen games we lost, only one was by more than 13 points. Around District time we started playing well again as we defeated Weeping Water, and we could have, and should have, defeated Nemaha Valley. We defeated some good teams, as in Tri-County and Odell, and we also lost to some teams that we never should have, like Lourdes, Sacred Heart, and Tecumseh. We had a weak Conference this year, but when you just can’t get the ball to fall through the hoop you can't expect to win. Again our record should have never been 7-13, but we gave it all we had, and our best just wasn’t good enough. Losing to some of the teams that we did didn’t help our cause any either, but all in all our record didn’t display the type of ball we played at all. Our team was very young this year and our lack of experience was a downfall. But over the next couple of years, with players coming up from Junior High and beyond that, Pawnee’s going to get back that winning tradition.” -Terry Tinich Mike Lang adds two in a sea of Nemaha Valley white. It would have been really easy for these girls to follow the majority of the girls at Pawnee High and be free after school — but these girls showed real pride in themselves and their school by toughing out the season. All five girls lettered, and Rochelle Weilage again capped the season off with a trip to the State Track Meet. 1987 Girls Track Team: Manager Sandy Hess. Rochelle Weilage. Coach Virgil King. Out of those eleven men you would find only one senior and as few as 3 juniors. What that is sure to tell you is that Pawnee City had a young, but determined team. This year two Pawnee City school records were broken. The 400M Relay record was broken by D.J. Weddle, Jason Kennedy, Tony Myers, and Terry Tinich with a time of 47.3 seconds. Terry Tinich also broke the High Jump school record with a leap of 6’4’’. Although there were high hopes to take both these record breaking events to state only Terry Tinich's high jumping was able to make it. All the members of the track team were able to letter and after only losing one member Pawnee City track looks strong for next year. Jason Kennedy hop. skips and jumps. Of course they did their usual ac- tivities such as visiting member’s farms, go- ing to leadership convention, co-sponsoring the Spring Dance, and grilling chicken — but this year was different. Mr. Ganzel, long time sponsor of FFA retired this year putting a close to an era. Many of Mr. Ganzel’s former members came to the FFA Banquet to wish him well and a few took the microphone to tell some stories about Mr. Ganzel. When you think of the group Future Homemakers of America you may think of a group of girls sitting around discussing babies, recipes, and husbands. Well you are sadly mistaken if you look at the Pawnee City FHA in that sense. FHA is a club involved in many ac- tivities. This club sells flowers for Valentine’s Day, holds lock-ins, has fund-raisers such as selling sweat- shirts, and goes to convention. The biggest project the FHA sponsors is the Spring Dance. In order to run a smooth, beautiful dance it takes money, organization, hard work and a lot of time .. . and yes once again the FHA did just that and had a terrific dance. Miss F, H. Lisa Lambert. I'm sooo cute!” The 1986-87 Pawnee City Cheerleaders were six girls who giggled some, fought a little, worked a lot, cheered often, and always had a good time! The six girls in this squad did a super job of enhancing spirit and tried hard to encourage the crowd to join them — sound easy — well it isn't. Cheerleading is more than short skirts and actions ... it’s much more. The preparation for cheerleading starts before school, it be- gins in the summer. This year the cheerleaders attended a camp sponsored by the International Cheerleading Founda- tion on the University of Nebraska. In competition held at the camp, Pawnee City placed 1st in the Overall Routine Compe- tition. During the year, the cheerleaders do not compete against other squads, they do not have a win loss record to brag on, but they still practice and dedicate themselves to this activity and it pays off ... Pawnee City has the finest squad around! 43 44 YEARBOOK IN THE MAKING This year in Journalism was quite interesting. Considering the fact that we started in debt and only had one person who had been in Journalism before, we actually finished in flying colors. Almost everything was done by the deadlines and we had turned in 38 pages by our second dead- line. Of course, the reason we worked so hard was for Mark Fuller, our Jostens representa- tive, he was everyone’s inspira- tion. The most memorable time of last year was taking road trips trying to sell ads to pay for the year- book. Another hardship encoun- tered was the dilemma of not having a camera all year long. So as you're sitting here reading this yearbook and looking at the pic- tures, think of all the hard work it took and remember the Year- book Staff of 1986-1987. Sandy Hess. Kim Burgess. The week started with spirit days where the students dressed according to the days assigned. These were Clash Day, Twin Day, Miami Vice Day, Dress Up Day, and Red Black Day. A new event was the hall decorating contest. The Seniors dominated this event with their exquisite Jungle de- sign. The Juniors were second with the Graveyard and the Freshmen were third with the Ocean. Another new experience was the Bonfire held Thursday night after the volleyball game. The rally includ- ed many activities including the fac- ulty vs. Senior tug-of-war, (the win- ner is still being debated) the three legged race, a snake dance, and the grand finale of the apple bobbing competition. Friday the pep rally was held in the gym with an unique queen contest being held. Competing for queen were Mr. or was it Ms. Stone, Tinich, Switzer, and Bender. The crowd loved them all but (Ms.) Bender fi- nally came through as reigning queen. Finally the game was here! At half- time the band performed and the King and Queen and their court were announced. Following the game a dance was held in the cafeteria. The theme was Heaven In Your Eyes, our cheer- leaders decorated in colors of baby blue, pink, and white, turning the cafeteria into a Heaven. Music was provided by Tracy Johnson and the night ended leaving the students of PCHS with many good memories of Homecoming '86. Homecoming Royally, back row: Carol Bowhay, Terry Tinich. Nicole Buss. The Foreigner is set in a run down summer resort owned and operated by Betty Meeks, unfortu- nately Betty may lose the resort. Reverend Lee, a boarder, and Owen Musser are planning to use the resort as K.K.K. headquarters. Rev. Lee also plans to marry Catherine Simms to get rich. She and her “dumb” brother, Ellard, are guests at the resort. Charlie Baker then enters this scene. He has been having troubles so he had his good friend, Froggy LeSueur, tell everyone he cannot speak English. Betty thinks he is the “nicest fellow , Catherine tells Charlie her deepest secrets, Ellard decides to teach Charlie English, and Charlie overhears Rev. Lee’s evil plans. Fortunate for all. Ellard, Charlie, Catherine, and Betty overth- row Rev. Lee and Owen Musser and save the resort to live happily ever after. With fine performances by the entire cast, the show was a big success. I felt that this was the best play that we have done since I have been in drama. There was some skeptism in the beginning, but when it came to showtime everyone gave 100 percent to please our favorite director.” -Jerry Wissler 49 mm dance NEVER CAY GOODBYE Queen Tina and King Doug A traditional springtime occasion at Paw- nee High, the spring Sweetheart Dance, was held on March 20. 1987- and was sponsored by the FFA and FHA. On May 2, 1987 magic swept over the town turning the VFW into an mystical restaurant, girls into glam- orous women in beautiful gowns and boys into fine gentlemen pre- sented in tuxedos and manners. This “magic” took place because of Prom. Before prom could take place things had to happen. Decorations had to be ordered and assembled, votes needed to be taken, wills and prophets had to be written, dresses were bought, tuxedos were ordered and a track meet had to be run. Despite all the confusion, hurried- ness, and arguments Prom '87 went off without a hitch and Midnight Masquerade will remain in the memories of participants for years to come. 54 Kris Sunneberg and Leanna Nimich take guests for a ride in the past.
