News highlights of the year. . . 1. Israeli soldiers round up Arabs in a ser- ies of raids as the Mid-East crisis simmered. 2. Sen. Edward Kennedy escaped serious injury when his car went off a bridge, but his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, 29, died. 3. Soviet and Chinese forces clashed on the border. Six were killed in one incident. 4. Stone by stone, this 17th century church was moved from London to Fulton, Missouri, to be restored as the Winston Churchill Memorial on the campus of Westminster College. 5. Growing more hair became the in thing for followers of the new life style. 6. The New York Mets proved they were for real by winning the World Series. 7. An SDS demonstrator is punched by another student as resentment mounted against disruptive tactics of radicals. 8. The year 1969 will be recalled as the historical moment when man from the planet Earth first landed on the Moon. 9. Chosen Miss America of 1970 was Pamela Eldred from the state of Michigan. 10. The first contingent of 25,000 Amer- ican troops leaves Vietnam. 11. Final rites for Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, World War II hero and 34th president, were held at Washington National Cathedral. The consolidation of several rural school dis- tricts into one unified dis- trict necessitated the for- mation of a nine-member board. They negotiated the purchases of new school buses and a a new heating system for the high school building. The school board also made a historical ruling in allowing girls to wear slacks to school. The stu- dent revised handbook was also approved by the school board. The school board listens attentively while school board president Robert Schilling explains the issues. Mr. Littell has been the principal for two years. He teaches Speech and is the Senior Class sponsor. Mrs. Georgia Martin, the school secretary, keeps the routine of the office efficient. Faculty Mrs. Daisymae Eckman has taught Vocational Home- making for sixteen years at P.C.H.S. She also was the advisor of the F.H.A. chapter. 0000000« S'- Tooooooco During his first year at Pawnee City, Mr. Bruce Haughton taught commercial courses. He was also sponsor of the freshmen and advisor of the annual staff. Mr. Terry Harlow taught geometry, Algebra I II, and trigonometry. He was also co-sponsor of the sophomore class during his third year at P.C.H.S. In his nineteenth year at P.C.H.S. Mr. Ronald Ganzel taught Vocational Agriculture, as well as serving as advisor of the F.F.A. chapter. 6 Mr. Gary Bedea taught Modem History, biology, and Modem Problems In his first year at P.C.H.S. He was also co-sponsor of the junior class. Mrs. Edna Richardson completed her twenty-third year of service at P.C.H.S. She taught art and English. Physics, chemistry, and Drivers Training were taught by Mr. John Miller. Mr. Miller completed his second year at Pawnee City. Sophomore English and German were taught by Mrs. Helen Johnson. During her second year at Pawnee City, she was also the supervisor of the Spanish class. 7 Faculty Mr. Gary Klein taught freshman and junior English and served as guidance counselor and assistant coach during his first year at P. C. H. S. Mrs. Elsie Bartrum's first year at Pawnee City High School was spent teaching the special education classes and serving as sponsor of the Pep Club. Mr. Frank Alexander conducted band and gave lessons in instrumental music in his first year at P. C. H. S. Mr. Larry Ribble taught Civics, American Govern ment, and P. E. , and served as head basketball coach during his first year at our school. 8 mm Mr. Larry Brown taught junior high social studies and P. E. He was also head football and track coach and served as sponsor for the P. C. Club Mr. Lavon Covault was co-sponsor of the junior class and taught sophomore Modern History and junior high math during his first year at P. C. H. S. Mrs. Donna Puls has been teaching junior science and social studies at Pawnee City for five years. She also served as the eighth graae sponsor. Teacher Aides Mrs. Bonnie Robison spent her first year at P. C. H. S. organizing and cataloging the school libraries. The difficult task of monitoring study hall was given to Mrs. Elsie Borcher. Dubois Grade School Mrs. Vert a Boehmer and Mrs. Florence Siske were the DuBois Grade School faculty. Personnel Without our loyal bus drivers, cooks, and custodians, it is doubtful that our school would function so smoothly. We feel that our dedicated personnel deserve to be commended for their fine service. As head cook, Luella Parks planned the meals which her capable staff, Marguerite Prine, Edith Jones, and Lucille Clark helped her prepare. This year the school district purchased a new bus which was driven by Ervin Johnson. The Pep Club is organized to promote pep and spirit at all P.C.H.S. football and basketball games. The mem- bers raised spirit with their groovy skits at rallies, Sock it to 'Em Day , Home- coming bonfire rally and by selling Spirit cookies before Valentine's Day. Many mem- bers spent long hours plan- ning rallies and decorating the halls with posters. The F.F.A, is organized to study ways to make farming faster, easier, and more economical. Among this year's activities were skating parties, hayrack rides, and a trip to the American Royal in Kansas City. To raise money, the F.F.A. sold food at all home football games. The P.C.H.S. chapter observed F.F.A. Week, Feb. 21-28. An event looked for- ward to by all the freshmen was the Greenhand Initiation. Family Night and a banquet climaxed this year's activi- ties. George, Jack, and Andy turn chickens at the FFA Barbecue and Banquet. 38 PAWNEE COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Ffiilip Johnson received a blue ribbon in Creed Speak ing at the FFA District Contests. At the FFA Banquet, Rodger Parks presented FFA Sweetheart, Sara Booth, with a long-stemmed red rose. HAAS COAST-TO-COAST STORE 39 FHA The Future Homemakers of America began their busy year by welcoming the in- coming Freshmen with a summer wiener roast. The upperclassmen enjoyed the traditional initiation which followed the Family Night banquet. This year the FHA presented the Winter Roy- alty Ball, and also a Tea to honor the eighth graders and chapter mothers. Winter Royalty Ball Reigning as King and Queen of the 1970 Royal Court of Hearts were Seniors Rick Howard and Joyce Kerb Kathi Flanagin and John Perdew were chosen as Prince and Rrincess of the 1970 Winter Royalty Ball. The King and Queen of Hearts was the theme of the Winter Royalty Ball. The decorations were co- ordinated with a deck of cards. Two large red and yellow cards served as throne backs and as cen- ters of interest. The color scheme was carried out by fans of cards as at- tendant markers, stream- ers, and the punch table decorations. The perplexing problems facing the student council had to be seriously debated before any solutions were reached. 44 The Student Council is com- posed of two representatives of each high school and jun- ior high class. The Student Council's projects this year included a Christmas movie, an educational trip to ob- serve the Beatrice Student Council in action, and acting as monitors at lyceums. Mr. Littell, our resourceful sponsor, aided us in the suc- cessful completion of this year's activities. FINE ARTS Band Despite a late start, the band had a very successful year. Mr. Franklin Alex- ander took over the direc- tion of the band late in Oc- tober and presented a Christmas concert in De- cember. The Strategic Air Command Woodwind Quintet presented the program at the annual band banquet. On April 23, the band attended District Music Contests in Nebraska City and earned a Superior Rating. The Annual Spring Concert on April 27 climaxed the concert sea- son. Band officers were Jerry Koeneke-President, Karen Richardson-Secre- tary, and Roger Buman- Vice President. Brian Ganzel did a fine job in the lead role of Winston Smith, a rebel in the totalitarian society of 1984. Football Despite hopes for a better season, the Indians ended with a dismal 2-6-1 record. Injuries, bad weather, and other misfortunes, plagued the team all season, but the Indians were in contention in most of the games. WHERRY BROTHERS All-Conference defensive back Rick Henninger dis- plays offensive moves that made him the Indians' leading ground space gainer as well. After starting in 38 high school football games, End Brian Ganzef earned honorable mention All-State and both offensive and defensive All-Conference awards. Indian Spirit was the theme for Homecoming '70'. Silhouettes of an Indian brave and maiden were in the spotlight at this year's festivities. Excitement car- ried over from the football game as the formal corona- tion was awaited. The roy- alty reigned over the first dance and the others joined in to make it a success. The setting, music, and people harmonized to make this year's Homecoming a unique experience. The 880 relay team was Dennis Findeis, David Bowman, Sean McIntyre, Cnarles Hatfield, and Mark PercivaL 66 WARNKE’S ONE STOP Golf Members of the golf team were Coach Garry Klein, Bob Sawyer, Roger Buman, Richard Crom, Kenny Kimes, Rick Stake, Riilip Johnson, Bill Latza, Jud Martin, Rick Hofmann, and Terry Ritchie. This year's golf team had an excellent season. Coached by Garry Klein, the golf team won four dual meets, two from Wymore, and one each from Falls City and Tecum- seh. Hopes were high for an- other state championship for our school this year, as the team went into the State Sand Greens Tournament at St. Paul, Nebraska. However, the Indians were only able to tie for fourth place in the meet. This year's team was fairly young with only three of the seven letter- men being seniors. Lettermen were Bob Sawyer, Roger Buman, Kenny Kimes, Rick Stake, Jud Martin, Terry Ritchie, and (not shown) Richard Crom.
