A ---- - THE INDIAN 1968 i Pawnee City High School Pawnee City, Nebraska John Andrews, Editor Front row; Dennis K„ Lynne S„ Terry B., John A., Russ H„ Back row; Nancy W., Anita G., Ruth S., Mr. Hillman. 1967-68 Indian Staff John crops picture while Ruth and Russ look on. In foreground Lynne and Anita write copy. This picture is the wrong size. How much copy do you want? Where's Kent? Why doesn't John like it? Who forgot their uniforms? These were but some of comments heard on any day the last of February in Room 206. Pictures are taken as events happen, and some copy can be done in advance, but there is the Big Push to meet the deadline when all the ends must be drawn together and a final copy placed in the mail. This year's staff under the direction of editor John Andrews, and sponsorship of Ric Hillman, spent many hours making this Indian one that would present a picture of this year's school activities. Thanks must go to the business con- cerns in our town who helped make our annual possible. We appreciate their sup- port sponsoring pages in the annual. 2 Miss Alice Brackett The 1968 Pawnee City High School Indian is dedicated to Miss Alice Brackett for her many fine years of service in the Pawnee City School System. The highlight of the ball was the coronation of the King and Queen of Hearts and their court. Regular meetings are held every other Wednesday to discuss recent business. Club are al- ways glad to sponsor a school activity. This year they did an outstanding job in sponsor- ing the Christmas Dance. It was truly one of the highlights of the first semester. The P.C. Club stresses good sportsman- ship, no matter if it's a winning or losing cause. More important still is the school spirit generated by the lettermen. It is an honor to become a P.C. Club member and all athletic participants strive for this honor. The P.C. Club officers from left to right are: Dick Fischer, Secretary; Terry Borcher, President; Larry Borcher, Vice-President. The Pawnee City Pep Club did an out- standing job of boosting the team and school in school spirit. The members actively participated in Eep rallies and cheering on the football and asketball teams to victory. Special high- lights of this year included a bon-fire pep rally for Homecoming, the Homecoming dance and coronation, and a special down- town rally for the Hebron game. During the basketball season the Pep Club also sold popcorn and pop at the home games. We are very proud of our Pep Club and con- gratulate them for their fine job. Pawnee Transfer 41 Philosophy vs. Editor Clicking typewriters, noises from the beast , orders from the editor all meant the Smoke Signals had gone to press. Recent gossip was gathered by the society editors to be passed on to the rest of the school, and anyone with a problem could rely on Dear Abby for a helpful answer. A summary of all the latest sports happenings were written up by the sports editor and each class and organization submitted a column telling of recent activities. The yellowed pages and lost and found column permitted students to advertize. To enrich the minds of the read- ers a page of philosophy appeared in each issue. Also featured was an editorial by the editor or co-editor discussing current issues concerning the student body. The paper, spon- sored by Mr. Hillman and edited by Russ Hunzeker was put out just about every month. Editor Russ Hunzeker poses by the mimeo- graph machine, commonly known by all who use it as the beast. Members of the Smoke Signals staff are Russ Hunzeker editor, Nanci Werner co-editor, John Andrews Philosopher, Lynne Stewart, Ruth Stevens, Anita Ganzel staff members, Terry Borcher, sports editor. 42 Haas Coast to Coast Thespians Sponsor Dramatics The officers are: Sec.-Treas., Shirley Neeman; Pres., Clarice Johnson; Vice-Pres., Liz Howard. Yes, remember the would be actors being orange slices, key holes, mousetraps and fishing poles? And no one will ever forget the pretend drunk scene by Marcia Kerl and Randy Howard. The plot may be dim but David's roll over the fence and Russ Hunzeker's fall from the ladder are in- delible memories. The cast and director, Mrs. Stevens, at least will remember the box of Cherry Mash Candy bars presented in between acts in retribution for all of the cues missed. Everyone seemed to be around and watching when it was time for Jay and Stephanie to practice a love scene. There was the pizza party and some sneak snacks and cocoa behind stage. David Anderson and Arden Lang will remember the recording of a car coming and leaving. After curtain call, everyone was ready to put it on again. Mrs. Dokken and Mrs. Stevens receive gifts from Mary Riley and Mary Ullman for a job well done. Above, Energetic Juniors unceasingly practice for their play. Homecoming Queen Sandi King Terry 50 Victory Tops Homecoming Queen Sandi and King Terry enjoy the first dance with their royal court to start the Homecoming off in the traditional manner. An exciting win over arch rival Wilber set the stage for a glorious homecoming. The King and Queen and their court were presented to the crowd at half time. The royal couples were then crowned later that night at the dance held in their honor. Con- gratulations were offered by the student body and the old graduates of PCHS. Conferences such as this one between coach McWilliams and quarterback Kenny Bowmen helped boost the Indians to a satisfying win over Wilber. 52 Suspense turned to excitement when the royal couples were announced to the crowd during half time ceremonies of the Pawnee - Wilber game. Great team effort combined with supe- rior coaching led the Indians to their final rating of 4th in the State. Lack of injury to key personnel was evidence of the teams overwhelming physical and mental power. The free-wheeling offense rolled up 345 points in the ten games, an average of 34.5 points a game. On the deffensive, the Indians allowed the opposition a meager sum of 4.5 points a game. The experience of the backfield coupled with hard-nosed line play, made Pawnee City, as one metropolitan newspaper said, a smooth running machine. Coach Kerm Mortensen and Head Coach Jim McWilliams truly made athletics at P.C. rewarding. Coach McWilliams was named the Coach of the Year in Southeast Nebraska by the Beatrice Daily Sun. The nucleous of the 1967-68 Football team was made up of eleven Seniors, three Juniors, and two Sophomores. Our two Juniors, Kenny Graham and David Rogers, led the defense by taking in more tackles than any other two players. Our Senior end, John Dahlgren, kept the yards gained by the opposition around his end at a fantas- tic low. The offense, spear-headed by center, Larry Borcher, left very little doubt in the minds of the opposition of the teams talent. Larry was supported with the blocking chores by Dave Rogers and Ken Graham, our fast moving, quick pulling guards. Rick, Brian, John, and Bob could be seen ripping large holes in the opponents defensive line to rovide ample running room for the spirited ackfield. The job of moving the ball was handled by the veteran backfield, Ken Bowman, Terry Borcher, Randy Howard, and Dick Fischer. 60 Kenny Bowman, a four year letterman and three year start- ing quarterback, shows his running ability as he out maneu- vers this Nebraska City defender. All-Conference Senior, John Dahlgren, in his first year of football proved to be quite proficient at the left end of our granite packed line. A familiar scene was our backfield showing their blocking strength, as well as their running ability. Here they are shown clearing the way as All-Conference Junior, Randy Howard, bullies his way toward more val- uable yardage. 61 k HEE cir) W Eyir | WTKECIt} Thumbs UpP.C. Ending the season with a 12-8 record, the Indians captured second in the Southeast Bor- der Tournament. They also handed State rated Sterling its only defeat of the regular season. All hopes of going to the State Tournament were lost in the semi-finals of the District Tournament when the Tribe lost to Sterling in a thriller, 68-69. In the statistical department the team was well balanced, receiving fine play from all the varsity players. Upper right; Kenny Bowman attempts a lay up against Hebron.
