Young African Exemplifies Good International Relations Many Pawnee City residents had a first hand experience in international relationship this last year when Peter Chege Mbitiru Ruoro, a 22-year old East African, spent a week in their midst as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Brewer. Peter, a native of Kijabe, Kenya, in East Africa, has been in the United States since January, studying in high school in New York state, and seeing points of interest in the East. He won the trip to America in an essay contest that was sponsored by the New York Herald Tribune. The young man is doing higher school certificate work at the Thisa high school, Thika, Kenya. He is interested in studying journalism, and hopes to continue his educa- tion in the United States. He was to have been interviewed by one college official on his return to the east coast. He left Omaha by plane Sunday. He had the choice of going to London for a while before returning to Kenya, or to come to Nebraska. He decided to visit Nebraska because of the Brewers. Mr. Brewer taught the young African in a school at Kapsabet, Kenya, while he was teaching two years in the Agency for International Development. Peter visited Pawnee City high school, and spoke in a number of classes as well as a lyceum at which he showed slides and exhibited some articles from his native land. At the assembly, the FHA presented him one of their Pawnee Indian sweatshirts. His eyes shone with pride and his face broke in a big smile when he explained later that he was happy to be adopted by the Pawnee City schools . He visited the state Capitol building in Lincoln, and was introduced to the Legis- lature while it was in session. He spent some time at the Historical Society building and the Museum. People in Kenya know of New York because of the skyscrapers; and think of Chicago as the city of gangsters; but the United States to most of them, is the land of cowboys and Indians , Peter said. It will be hard to convince them that I didn't see a cowboy or Indian in Nebraska. He did get a chance to take his first horseback ride while he was here, and from his description of piloting the horse , it was probably one of the highlights of his Nebraska visit. Unlike the East where he described the people as courteous but cool , he made many friends in Pawnee City. When asked to write something in Swahili, the general language of Africa, he wrote, Vapenda maisha ya Pawnee City sana. Translated the sentence means, I like Pawnee City life very much. With his sense of humor, his apprecia- tion of his trip to the United States and Nebraska and for anything done for him, and with his intelligence, he was a fine ambas- sador for Kenya to Pawnee City. In him, Pawnee City, too, will have a good ambas- sador wherever he goes. 4 COLWELL DRUG COMPANY
