The fifty piece marching band played and presented a half-time maneuver for all home games and three out-of-town games. A number of new Instruments were added to the band, this year, lncludlng two new bass horns, a com- plete set of gold-flnlsh drums, an oboe, and three French horns. In the early winter, however, the band suf- lerede an appreciable decrease ln membership when several instruments were stolen. A major event of the band, the flrst semester. was the trlp to Tulsa to play in a parade in honor of the President of the Unlted States. In October the band held the annual Hallowe'en carnival and completed pay- ments on the 'band bus from the profits of the event. The Instrumental department, In co-operation with the vocal groups. presented a Christmas concert as a tribute to the citizens of Pawhuska. At the annual spring concert Karel Barnes, sophomore, was crowned Band Queen by Dmm Major Dick Con- ley. also a sophomore. Activities planned for the remainder of the school year Include the sponsoring of a concert by the Tulsa University band, band day at Pryor, Pawnee parade at Pawnee, the district concert at Tonklwa and the Trl-State Festival at Enid. The Huskies W'-'F9 Chamvions Of the Verdesrris Valley Vonfercnce in '47 and co-chamvions in '48 Season pitchers in the '49 line-up are Dick Allen and Royce Kingsbury: veteran infk.m0rS ah, Mvin Gam, George Bighorse, Kenneth Treat, and Eddie VVilliamsg veteran catchers include Von W'orten and Joe Gre I outfield hfldcvcrs are Howard Neptune, Fred Muller, and Melvin Gann, Kgs' New recruits show real mettle, the coach says. BASKETBALL The '49 Huskie cagers, like the gridiron men, experienced one of their most reactionary seasons. However, they kcpt plugging away, undaunted hy defeat. In mid-season indomitable courage and hard work began to pay off. In the last half cf the period they won ten games. including the district tilt. They went to the finals in the regional tournament, losing to Cleveland, 32 to 29, in the closing game. This defeat placed the Huskies fifth in the conference. The chief handicap of the boys, according to Coach Lucas, 'was lack of height. That Eddie VVilliams and Fred Muller, leading scorers of the team, will return another season, is a promising outlook for the cagers of '49-'50.
