If one person of the class of '47 exem- plified the true spirit of Pawhuska high school more nearly than another, that person was Al. That ls how the mem- bers of his class feel: that is how the faculty feels. Al was for the school. He was in- terested ln every phase of it. He was a booster. He could put over any meas- ure he undertook. He was not only a. good student in his academic subjects, but he participated in various extra- curricular activlties. Among them were 4-H club, Poetry club, Future Teachers of America, football, contests, National Guard, Boys' Glee Club, Annual-Chopa staff, Junior play, Student Council and State Honor Society. lllllllllllllllllllllll lliIIIIIIIlIIIIIIlllllIIIl!llIIIIlilllllllllllllllllllll IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII! As the handsome young dramatic coach in the Junior play, Come Rain or Shlne, Al was outstanding in his jestful interpretation. In the annual all-school Christmas program, put on by the speech and vocal music departments, Al played in true spirit the part of the bishop in The Bishop's Candlestick, by Victor Hugo.. In the Senior play, And Came the Spring, Al again had a lead. He played to the hilt the part of Jeffrey Hart- ness, an aristocratic husband and father who maneuvered the welfare of his household. In developing the theme, Our Tasks, Al and six other young men of his class appeared on the Commencement DF0- gram. Al used as his subject Strengthening of Three Great American Institutions. He did honor to himself in mter- preting the part the home, the school and the Church play in American life. Al's love of life, generous attitude toward others and strong personality endeared him to everyone. He was an ideal Amer- ican high school boy. The best to be wished for every high school student is that he might have the ability and will to live life as abund- antly, wholesomely and joyously as AL did. Surely his sparkling, fervent spirit is making brighter that other dawn. llllllllllllllllllllllll IlIlllllllIlllllllllllllIlllllIIlllllllllllllillllllllll IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII , f , of the Pawhuska schools is composed of five members, elected for a period of three years. Opening the season against the Hominy Bucks, the Huskies defeated the Bucks 33 to 6 in the first of a series of. vic- torles. Encountering Daniel Webster, the Huskies went down to an 18 to 6 defeat. This game only prodded them to more pow- er for the Fairfax game. The Red Devils were no match forthe Pawhuska. gridsters, who defeated them 70 to 6. In the fourth non-conference game the Pawhuska eleven froze out the Shldler Tigers, 33 to 0. The next six games were rough, for they were all conference games. The Huskies were out to capture the Verdigrls Valley C7AJ championship, for which they had been close rivals the past two years. The Huskies triumphed over Sand Springs 20 to 0. Miami, who could not withstand the stone wall of the defensive, nor catch up with the fleet-footed backfield of the snappy T, lost by a. score of 7 to 20. Crucial was the next one. Though the Huskies played their hearts out, they tied with Vinita, 13-13. Pryor knocked off the favored Lucasmen 6 to 0, costing the Huskies the conferencechampionship, but this could not break down the spirit of the boys, nor the spirit of the fans. In the next encounter the Huskies rolled over Claremore, 20 to 7. Playing in mud practically ankle deep in the last game of the season, the Huskies splattered Nowata., 19 to 7. With seven victories, one tie, and two defeats, the Huskies said farewell to the gridiron and Ormand Beach Stadium: but not without putting one man on the All-State Team, Captain Louie Surber, and four men on the All-Conference team. Jim Rush and Louie Surber, first teamg Ed Easley and Dick Dickson, second team. From the squad of this season, PHS will lose nine Huskies through graduation. These boys are Robert Adams, Dick Dickson, Ed Easley, Hobert Muller, Bi-ll Musgrove, Norman Rowe, Jim Rush, Stanley Sandstrom, and Louie Surber. Another loss that will be hard to replace 15 Ted Brunt, assistant coach for the past two years. BASKETBALL AT PHS From the first game cf the season to the last, the Huskies, coached by Frank Lucas, turned out an exhibition of ball control, setups, pivot and long range shots to make themselves recognized as one of the major teams of the state. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Huskies opened their program against the Homlny Bucks, taking a. close victory of 33 to 30. During the season's schedule, the Huskies weathered games with Muskogee, Stillwater, Will Rogers and Capitol Hill. Other non-conference teams the Huskies met were Shidler and Hominy, defeating each in two encounters. For the first time since the Huskies entered the Verdigris Valley contest in '42, the PHS athletes walked away with a 7-Af championship crown. During the conference games, the Huskies were defeated only twice, by Pryor 42 to 39 and by Sand Springs 39 to 30. Conference teams which the Huskies downed twice were Claremore, Miami, Vinlta and Nowata. In January, the Pawhuska quintet entered the Cleveland Invitational tournament, bringing home the class A trophy. after defeating Dewey and Cleveland. I For the first time Pawhuska was awarded the regional tournament: for the second time, they won class A cham- pionship. The Huskies chalked up victories against Miami and Ponca City. Beating Vlnita in the finals, the Pawhuska cagers advanced to the state tourney. In first round play, the Huskies met the Norman five in a. stiff game, in which they lost 52 to 32. This was the second team for coach Lucas to guide to the state tournament since he joined the faculty of PHS. Last year the basketball squad, which included several regulars of this season, lost in the semi-finals to Muskogee, 37 to 35, after smashing Frederick 50 to 44. Huskies who will graduate ln May are Louie Surber, Dick Dickson, and Hobert Muller. ks in football. the athletic department boasts another all-stater, in basketball. Dick Dickson, Huskies' captain, made the first team. Dick set an all time record in the Verdigris Valley conference by scoring 244 points in 12 games for a 20.2 average. He also set an all-time record for PHS by scoring 434 points in 28 games for the season. 'He will take part in the All-State classic in August, in Oklahoma City.
