Among the students who walked the few blocks to the Lions' Island area were Ms. Heurkens’ Phys. Ed. Classes. Ms. Morris' 9th Grade Enriched English Class. Mr. Pender s French II Class. Mrs. Stenner's Performing Arts Class, and Ms. Granum's Spanish IV Class. 3 Redskin Spirit A A. Junior Powder Puff Cheerleaders Ben Demereck, Jeff Celia and Scott Dent add a bit of acrobatics to a rousing routine. B. Senior Spirit Leader, Frank Garcia, flashes a winning smile at the Homecoming assembly. C. Melodie Perry, Chad Worden, Shelly Blacksten and Mark Duell pause in friendly comradery after the assembly. Homecoming is the first big event in the school year that gets the students involved in class spirit and group participation. This year's theme, A Halloween Homecoming - The Legend of Paw Paw Hallow, provided great fun and enthusiastic involvement. A. Senior Powder Puffers Terri Thomas. Janet Barnhart. Paula Jones. Seniors took first place in the float competition with “Stew the Irish . Halloween Homecoming E. Juniors tugged with all their might but the Freshmen won the war and the point. F. F _________ One Victory for Varsity Gridders The 1983 Varsity Football season was a tough one for the Redskins with only one victory over the Malta wan Wildcats. Joe! Patterson and Ron Ciszek produced most of the offense, while linebackers Tim South, Paul Abnet and tackles Mark Serbenski and Gary Jacobs held our defense together. Elected to the K.V.A. All-Conference Team - Honorable Mention were Joe! Patterson, Tim South, Kevin Flick, Mark Serbenski and Ron St. Clair. Outstanding players for the Redskins were: Leading Tacklers - Tim South. V.Upsets G-A Rams The Sophomore Football season was a season filled with thrills and disappointments. The team record was 4 wins and 5 losses. After two opening losses, one to Benedictine of Detroit and the other to Mattawan, the team put a four game winning streak together. The highlight of the winning streak was a big victory over Galesburg-Augusta, 34-32. The remaining three losses were hard-fought contests, climaxed with a heart-breaking defeat to Otsego in the waning seconds of the contest. Overall, the season was a successful one and the team deserves a round of applause for their endeavors. Receiving the Coaches Award was Paul Schlncariol and Ted Owens received the Big Heart Award. Though success was due to a total team effort, much could be attributed to Seniors Paula Jones, Kim McDowell, Tracy McNeil, Lynn Stull and Kim PUarski, whose gallant efforts will be missed next year. Lynn Stull was voted Most Valuable Player by her teammates and Tracy McNeil was voted Most Improved Player. Lynn Stull and Kim McDowell were selected to the KVA All Star Team by the coaches, while Paula Jones and Tracy McNeil received Honorable Mention awards. Besides being chosen to the KVA All Star Team. Kim McDowell was the first Girls Basketball player from Paw Paw to be chosen to the Associated Press All-State Team. Kim also set a new school record this year for the most points scored in one game with 37. Student Council sponsored a KVA exchange day In the fall. E. Senior Pam Barich represented the student body at a Board of Education meeting, voicing the feelings of the students to Superintendent Robert Hansen. F. Halftime Committee members Ann Goodyear, Lisa Schincariol, Kim Pilarski and Norma Ousley prepare sashes for the Homecoming candidates. Physics Road Rally It was a beautiful sunny day for the annual Physics Road Rally. Mr. Freeland was in charge of the competition between 8 groups of Physics students. All were given motion problems from Physics to solve, sending the students off in different directions. Upon arriving at the solved location, the groups had to sign in at the checkpoint. The goal of the rally was to find all of the checkpoints in the correct order with minimum distance traveled and minimum time elapsed. Check with any Physics student for helpful hints to win a Road Rally. A. Road Rally participants included Mindy Racette, Pam Barich, Lisa Schincariol. Kim Kolosar and Michele Dokey reflect the good times had at school sponsored dances. q q “ Student Council sponsored several assemblies and student activities throughout the winter months. Dawn Mullins was entranced while she was suspended In mid-air; Mark fierbenskl volunteered for some trickery with rings and Margie Harrell tried to operate some unusual scissors. A Monday afternoon assembly with the Air Force Band captivated a very attentive audience. Ms. Stull was serenaded with the lyrics, You Were Always on My Mind while dancing with a young Airman, and a lively tune evoked the student body to respond with an Oh YeahI Norma Ousley, Andy Kokitus and Julie Kemp worked on a raffle that raised over $255 for Muscular Dystrophy. March was reading month In Paw Paw and the winners of a poster contest were: Michelle Parish First Place, Paul Connelly and Kip De Valle - Second Place. Joy Stoner (not pictured) - Third Place. The Student Council took advantage of the circus theme of Winter Homecoming to provide a means of raising money for Muscular Dystrophy. Each class sponsored a carnival booth and students flocked to the gym to spend their money and enjoy the Big Top atmosphere. The ‘Sponge Toss Booth of the Senior Class proved to be the most profitable, raising over fifty-six dollars for M.D. A. Senior Kevin Flick was one of the first to spend his quarter for a chance to toss a wet sponge. B. Student Council officers Kim Piiarski, Theresa Gulmond and Paul Higashi contributed to the planning and organizing of Winter Homecoming '84. Take A Chance! C. Therm warn never a dull moment am sponges flew non-stop for the entire lunch period. Among the wary victims were “The St.”. Brian Pace and Mark Serbenskl. D. Junior Poms Alyson Wllfong and Mary Rumaey Join classmate Rim Krause In the stands after they performed a cheerleader-pom routine to Michael Jackson’s Beat It”. E. Sophomores Crystal Oliver. Usa Williams and Susie Podkol manned their class booth as contestants tried to accumulate the most points by tossing ping pong balls. F. Kathy Hoover rakes In the cash at the Freshmen’s ”Coin Toes”. Quiz Bowl Team Undefeated in KVA Quiz Bowl questions come from ail areas of knowledge: literature, social studies, science, theater, mathematics and music. A team gains points for a correct answer but loses points for a wrong answer. This year's Paw Paw High School Quiz Bowl team led the Kalamazoo Valley Association with an undefeated season, the only team of seven in this year's KVA double elimination competition to accomplish this feat. Two of the victories were in overtime. The team point production improved the last four games, showing good signs for next year's program. Some of the highlights were Will Wisher’s one hitter against Bloomingdale, six homeruns hit in the game against Hartford, and come-from-behind wins over Hackett and Galesburg-Augusta. The leading hitters were Joel Patterson (.333) and Will Wisher (.306). In homeruns. Wisher led with six, followed by Patterson and Joe VanNus with four each. Todd Barkovich hit three homeruns. In the pitching department. Barkovich had three wins. Wisher had two wins and one save, and VanNus had one win and one save. Wisher and Patterson were named co-most valuable players for the team. Mike Burk pitched a no-hitter against Bangor, blanking the Vikings 11-0. Burk, with a .345 average, led the offense In five categories Including hits, runs, triples, times on base and homeruns. Bob Yarbrough was the leading hitter for the Reds with a .444 batting average. The J.V.'s had six other .300 hitters In their lineup which sported a team average of .292.
